Once again, our pre-Gameweek members article, focussing on the main captaincy contenders, arrives this evening. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

David Silva is the runaway leader of our Gameweek 20 Captain Poll ahead of Man City’s home clash with Sunderland. Four goals and an assist over his last three matches in Manuel Pellegrini’s false nine system has persuaded over 38% of voters to opt for the little Spaniard as the champions look to bounce back from their weekend home draw against Burnley. Four goals in his previous six earns Yaya Toure 5% backing here, despite concerns over the groin injury that kept him out of the Clarets’ clash.

Raheem Sterling and Charlie Austin are next in line with 9% of votes apiece. The former’s move to the central role up top saw him grab a goal against Burnley last Friday, and with visitors Leicester conceding at least twice in five of their last six road trips, the Reds will fancy their chances of a third straight win. Despite an unexpected blank at home to Palace on Sunday, Austin has still served up five goals and a pair of assists in his last four at Loftus Road ahead of the visit of Swansea.

Wayne Rooney remains in contention as Man United roll up to the Britannia. Stoke have registered back-to-back clean sheets but will do well to keep out their opponents, who have now gone nine matches unbeaten – Rooney has five goals and a pair of assists in his last seven.

Eden Hazard is the preferred Chelsea weapon of choice for the league leaders’ trip to White Hart Lane. The Belgian has earned 5% of votes after earning returns in each of his previous four appearances – Diego Costa, on the other hand, is trusted by just 2% of voters after scoring just twice in his last six.

Aston Villa’s Christian Benteke has been backed by 4% for the home encounter with managerless Palace. The big Belgian has produced returns in two of his last three at Villa Park and looks the man most likely to breach the Eagles’ backline.

Further down, the likes of Stewart Downing (2%) and Andy Carroll (1%) look real differentials as the Hammers host struggling West Brom, whilst Robin van Persie and Alexis Sanchez (2% and 1%) could also be worth considering, given their fine festive form.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    OK, my options....
    A) Schmeichel to pants

    D) costa to rooney

Have 2fts but would prefer to save one

Is this lot is good to go?

    Forster
    Zaba Hutton JT
    Sanchez Silva Eriksen Hazard(c)
    Austin Costa Kane

    4.0 Chester Clyne* King*

    2m ITB and 0 FT

One fit player in bench worries me, anything worth for a hit?

Anybody else have 2 FT's this week and don't know what the hell to do. I want to do Hart to DDG next week. Baines out next week, but this week fixtures are too kind to let go of them.

They won't play the false 9 now with jovetic back. I don't see why anyone would bring him in. I'd rather go with sterling. Silva didn't get involved much when jovetic was on the pitch

Agree he won't play false 9

Disagree entirely about how much he's involved. Just adding fuel to the daft argument that somehow Silva will stop scoring become they have a striker

                • 13 Years
                11 years, 3 days ago

Yeah and he has been roaming in the hole and taking his turn as the false 9 of late. His goal threat will reduce and assist threat increase imo as he's a pass-first type player now with a goal scorer to pass to.

Just means jovetic more advanced and ready to turn defenders.

The main impact being he's likelier to get assists.

Richards, Taylor, Fabian, Jonjo all looked really bad IMO. It doesn't matter anymore, the thing is I can't see the reason to captain Sterling with players like Hazard, Austin or Silva around. Or maybe I am just wrong and Raheem will go for a brace and I see another red arrows.

I never said Sterling was a bad player, owned him for over half of the season and probably he'll be in my team again any time soon. I just asked why is Raheem getting so much love and why so many people out there believe he's the best choice for captain. Apart from the fixtures I can't see the reason for that.

What would be the implications of that Yaya tweet?

He is calling his manager a liar in public.

Losing Yaya would be a disaster for City. This might be a title-defining tweet.

Yaya is a bit strange dude and gets very sensitive sometimes. He is getting old too, city should really sell him now to PSG rather than later

I was going to but I had to sort out my defence. Zab might be rotated, which I personally can't see happening. I had a lot of forwards against my defence - kane vs terry, sig vs caulker. But I would've shipped him out for sterling

Same here. I am also contemplating a move of Yaya > Sterling / Sanchez. I don't have Sanchez, and he might not be soon.

But leaving aside the transfers, this tweet is gotta have something more behind the scenes.

Aye. It can only go so wrong.

I'm either going back to Haz (the original plan for next week) or going for Sterling.

Funny how it works out - last week Yaya > Silva would have actually been the right move, but at the time having both looked great.
