Once again, our pre-Gameweek members article, focussing on the main captaincy contenders, arrives this evening. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

David Silva is the runaway leader of our Gameweek 20 Captain Poll ahead of Man City’s home clash with Sunderland. Four goals and an assist over his last three matches in Manuel Pellegrini’s false nine system has persuaded over 38% of voters to opt for the little Spaniard as the champions look to bounce back from their weekend home draw against Burnley. Four goals in his previous six earns Yaya Toure 5% backing here, despite concerns over the groin injury that kept him out of the Clarets’ clash.

Raheem Sterling and Charlie Austin are next in line with 9% of votes apiece. The former’s move to the central role up top saw him grab a goal against Burnley last Friday, and with visitors Leicester conceding at least twice in five of their last six road trips, the Reds will fancy their chances of a third straight win. Despite an unexpected blank at home to Palace on Sunday, Austin has still served up five goals and a pair of assists in his last four at Loftus Road ahead of the visit of Swansea.

Wayne Rooney remains in contention as Man United roll up to the Britannia. Stoke have registered back-to-back clean sheets but will do well to keep out their opponents, who have now gone nine matches unbeaten – Rooney has five goals and a pair of assists in his last seven.

Eden Hazard is the preferred Chelsea weapon of choice for the league leaders’ trip to White Hart Lane. The Belgian has earned 5% of votes after earning returns in each of his previous four appearances – Diego Costa, on the other hand, is trusted by just 2% of voters after scoring just twice in his last six.

Aston Villa’s Christian Benteke has been backed by 4% for the home encounter with managerless Palace. The big Belgian has produced returns in two of his last three at Villa Park and looks the man most likely to breach the Eagles’ backline.

Further down, the likes of Stewart Downing (2%) and Andy Carroll (1%) look real differentials as the Hammers host struggling West Brom, whilst Robin van Persie and Alexis Sanchez (2% and 1%) could also be worth considering, given their fine festive form.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

      Keeper - good

Defenders - Nice, tempted by Chambers to Hutton though and
      bench Williams?

      Mids - Great

      Forwards - Good also

I feel as though a light has been turned on this year but want to check as I still have doubts. This is the rule I've tried to follow.

You should never make a swap of a player for a hit if the player you are removing is nailed on to play and has a reasonable level of form (scored/assisted in last four) or they are playing reasonably well and have previously returned points.

It seems to be working but is it right or have I just been lucky

It's correct most times. No rule will work all the time.

The reason why it works is because it's 'sideways'. Other teams will be upgrading in other areas with their ft.

For me you shouldn't take a hit unless it will definitely improve your team over 3/4 weeks

      1. WorldCupDanB

I guess that's the thing unless the player out is really out of form then it's impossible to say.

its really hard to gauge whether a player will definitely improve your team or not.

A lot of factors take into account..using a real life example, sanchez scores 2 double digits and have burnley at home..and u have to take a hit to get him and might have to sell a player of decent form, its really hard to decide as sanchez's after fixture is not that great. but if u choose to delay u would have missed out on the haul.

usually with careful planning u might have avoided a hit..but i guess sanchez is 1 example where he does not feature in many plans b4 that

Even if it's not for a hit, this is good advice. I sold Clyne for Cresswell for free a couple of weeks ago, which could've backfired heavily already if Clyne didn't get injured. Then I sold Downing to make room for Yaya, which....well, we don't need to talk about that.

      1. WorldCupDanB

I think that's it things have just become a lot clearer this season, every week there are players who are talked up and you have a feeling they will be explosive (Silva and sterling this week) but more often than not if you hold your present player in the long run it'll usually pay off

      2. money face bandwagon

no offence but when everyone here talks about selling their soton assets and talking up cresswell its hard for you not to be tempted

in general yes..but the exception to the rule is to swap for player with better fixtures/form.

i did a few times of swapping out a form player for another one..i got tadic 23pts haul and sell him right after his 1st blank for downing (on form too)...i oso sold fab for hazard when fab is still consistently getting points.

a hit or not is hard to say..for example if u sell fab for hazard for a hit and u captain him..u could have earned much more

Managed to open up a 53 point lead against a guy I hate.we've won 3 titles each.

    This week:

    Him: Baines & downing

    Me: Hutton & Silva

Think he edges this one. But hopefully just by the odd point. The captaincy decision will be more significant.

Morning all and hope this new year will be good to all of us in all respects!
I'm in a quandary, current mids are Silva/Haz/Sanchez/Siggy/Yaya.

I was all set to do Yaya > Sterling but with his positive fitness update I'm unsure:
Yaya-On pens/frees should be well rested and City play so much better with him, I expect a backlash after that Burnley comeback and I wonder will that Sunderland team be tired after these last few games and city could easily rack up a high score.
Sterling-explosion imminent, was unlucky not to get something in that 4-1 rout, Liverpool seem to have some form and in Cout/Lallana/Sterling Rodgers seems to have found a good recipe for pace/trickery and goals.
Any feedback would be much appreciated,
    Thanks.

Some seem concerned about the tweet as it's directly contradicting what Pelegrini said!

Either way I think if shift him to Sterling as you have Silva there to cover MC; if they do get a bag of goals, he'll be involved.

I'd probably get Sterling in myself, but no way of doing it without taking a hit, which I'm not doing this GW.

What's your PP opponents team like. Think I'm in trouble - very similar teams, but he's got double AV in defence 😕

Yea your probably right icon, I know he will troll me the second I sell even when Yaya didn't play Siggy came in for him-what a guy!
        Silva/Sterling/Hazard/Sanchez/Siggy
Costa/Austin/Kane - who would you bench?
        I'm leaning to Kane, thoughts?

Tough our core players are the same, all teams left now are current and full of quality so it's (c) and an odd player that makes the difference, I'd feel hits are a no no at this stage,

Yeah, has to be Kane. He might grab a goal, but can't see Spuds getting more than 1. Siggy's firm is good again and after his heroics on Monday you couldn't bench him again!

Trying to decide whether to swap Krul to Guzan or Migs this week as Foster won't get much at WH. It really only for this week (PPCup in mind) as I'll play Foster next week regardless.

What you think? Beef up GK or save the t/fer?

I think I would act on a def transfer in your case, look again at his team I know he has double Villa, do you cover it or spread the risk on Ming?
Your tie could be won/list here.

Yeah, that's the dilemma - whether to cover or spread. Gut says to spread, as I'd only be half covering and giving myself less differentials. A draw will see him through...

My other problem is using the t/Fer limits my ability to get Sterling next week if he does click into gear this week. Hmmmm, decisions decisions!

Got Dummett already; don't think I'd double especially with Pardew disruption.

That said, it was more keeping 2 FTs for next week than saving money tbh.

Not sure how much I should invest in one round of the PP Cup. Overall rank is the bigger picture.

I'll have a good think over course of the day and decide later.

tough one. Sweet MF by the way.

I would advise to hold. 2 FTs are always nicer than 1 FT and missing 1 GW if he hauls isn't too bad - If you do it and pool stumble again you'll be gutted if Yaya gets anything. But both of those are big ifs.

Honestly? Flip a coin. whatever it says - just do it and don't regret it.

    DDG Krul

    Kolo Clichy Azpi Wisdom Clyne

    Fab Sanchez Downing Siggy Lampard

    Costa Austin Welbeck

    0.7 ITB
    1 FT

I want to bring Silva in, in place of Lampard. this is what i have figured out:

    A) Clyne(injured) Lampard Welbeck(injured) --> Hutton Silva Barnes (-8)
    B) Hutton and Barnes(exit Clyne and Welbeck) this GW and Silva next GW.(-4)
    C) Clyne --> Hutton this GW.

Any other suggestions as to how to raise the cash?

Will Welbeck to Kane give you enough cash for Lamps to Silva.
I did Lamps to Silva 2 GWs ago.....not always convinced by Silva but he's on fire at the mo.

Sadly no…Welbeck to Kane makes me just .4M short of my target…although if i take an extra hit i can have:

Clyne Kolo Welbeck Lamps --> Hutton Duff Kane Silva(-8 over 2 GWs)

Seems pretty ludicrous…I think ill battle on till the Jan WC…was planning to go in late…but might have to play it sooner...

Can somebody please explain all the Cresswell love on here? Is he really worth 5.5m? Fixtures aren't exactly fantastic coming up.

Next 3 fixtures are good. After that you can shift him out on the wildcard.

Defenders are thin on the ground now with fixtures/rotation,
He's nailed and has a chance of attacking returns,

No idea. WHAM don't do cs and 5.5 is far too expensive.

Potential wildcard given the GK / DEF rotation possibilities - http://imgur.com/7R5Ah6R

£2m in the bank so could upgrade Sterling to Di Maria / Silva at any stage. I'm not sure about Kane/Austin long term but they're doing alright for now.

RVP as a placeholder for Aguero.

Why would Bony go to Chelski or Man City, apart from the obvious?
Surely a Remy-esque situation would occur at either club....

    Hazard
    Fabregas
    Silva
    Yaya
    Sterling
    Benteke
    Austin
    Sakho

Sterling was really unlucky in the last game. A brace, he could get.

If there was positive news of Yaya, it's hard to sell him before SUN though.

      The million $ question, Nat.

Guess it boils down to whether you see him in the points v SUN. He might get limited gametime too if not fully recovered but after the BUR debacle, it's hard to see him rub-a-dub-dub.

Who would you get for him anyway?

I think Liverpool mid, e.g. Sterling, is interesting for both form & fixtures.

He was unlucky in the last game.

Morning ladies and gentlemen and an early happy new year to you all.

Onto business, chambers burning an uncertain hole in my bench and I have 2 ft. (5.1 to spend)

    Trippier
    Or
    Reid/Jenkinson (which one)

Comments please, as I'm dithering here!

Worth trading Balotelli for Filipe Luis in a draft league?

(Had a free pick to take Balotelli, he's been rotting on my bench ever since. Was hoping to get trading value but that seems unlikely as well.

Without using a crystal ball to look into the future - what do you think the chances are of Zabaleta playing tomorrow? Considering his head got opened up rather nicely in their last game against Burnley!

Eriksen or Nasri out for Sterling? Or neither? Kind of leaning towards Nasri as he's not picking up a lot of points and SUN,eve,ARS,che aren't very juicy fixtures. ( planning to save WC for as late as possible. All feedback appreciated!

I doubt we're going to get any more concrete news on Yaya before the games, so my priority is transferring Giroud out. Should I get:

    A) Carroll
    B) Ayoze
    C) Another (if so, who? Can go up to around the 10.5 mark).

    Own Baines.

No glaring issues in MID / ATT but no City / United cover.

Baines --> Zaba / other DEF? 1 FT and 0.8m ITB.

    Yes or no?
