We turn our attentions to Gameweek 21 this morning, with league action set to commence in just seven days’ time. Tony Pulis and Alan Pardew are handed some kind opening fixtures at the helm of West Brom and Crystal Palace respectively, whilst Man United and Sunderland are also afforded a degree of optimism thanks to the upcoming schedule.

SUNDERLAND

“frisking

With just one win in their last ten league outings, Gus Poyet’s side are in need of a dose of rescue remedy at the start of the New Year. Fortunately for the Black Cats, the impending fixture list looks promising, with four home encounters on their imminent agenda; Liverpool travel to the Stadium of Light next weekend, with Burnley, QPR and West Brom also heading to the north west in the next six.

Although last Thursday’s fight-back at Man City ultimately proved unfruitful, Sunderland will be nonetheless buoyed by their spirited display ahead of that kind run of matches. The Wearsiders’ lack of results certainly hasn’t been down to their rearguard who have registered five shut-outs in their last nine displays, and their budget defensive options could now receive plenty of attention. The 4.5-valued Costel Pantilimon’s authoritative performances between the sticks have played a big role in their defensive fortunes, though with Patrick van Aanholt and Anthony Reveillere expected back in mid-January, there’s plenty of uncertainty at full-back, with the likes of Santiago Vergini and Billy Jones also in contention. Vergini’s versatility could see him switch to centre-half, though.

Further forward, strikers Connor Wickham and Steven Fletcher have managed a single goal between them since Gameweek 10, though the form of Adam Johnson offers hope. The 6.0-priced midfielder has earned returns in five of his previous six appearances, courtesy of three goals and an assist, and looks an in-form differential option for our five-man midfields for the remainder of the winter.

WEST BROM

“frisking

Hardly the most appealing of Fantasy prospects in recent months, the Baggies have registered a single win in their last ten and picked up five points in the process. The instalment of Tony Pulis, however, could bring West Brom’s defence back onto our radars if the former Palace boss can instill the same sort of resilience that harvested 10 clean sheets in his 26 matches in charge at Palace last term.

With an enticing schedule now lying in wait, interest in the Baggies’ assets could be set to pick up. The Midlands outfit welcome Hull, Spurs and Swansea in the next six, and with trips to Everton, Burnley and Sunderland also coming up, Pulis has one of the kindest schedules around.

Despite their lowly league position, West Brom have registered as many clean sheets as third-placed Man United this season, and Andre Wisdom (4.4) and Ben Foster (4.6) may be set to offer considerable value across that forthcoming schedule. Further forward, Stephane Sessegnon has impressed of late, grabbing four assists in his last five starts, and the Benin international’s creativity could prove central to Pulis’ renaissance plans. Saido Berahino, meanwhile, scored for the first time since Gameweek 9 on New Year’s Day, and delivered maximum bonus points – after falling down the pecking order, he’ll be hoping to cement a starting berth once again and offer Fantasy managers another budget forward to consider.

MAN UNITED

“frisking

A 1-1 draw at Stoke extended the Red Devils’ unbeaten run to ten league encounters, and the forthcoming fixture list will provide Louis van Gaal’s men with every chance of prolonging that streak. United entertain Southampton at Old Trafford next weekend in what could prove to be a decisive match in the hunt for Champions League qualification and they then face QPR, Leicester and Burnley in three of their following four. With clashes against Newcastle and Sunderland also further down the line, United have the opportunity to build up a real head of steam before the road gets rough from Gameweek 29 onwards.

David De Gea’s status as the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game’s most popular goalkeeper shouldn’t change, then, and with United’s rearguard having conceded just three times in the last five outings, their other backline assets could now warrant interest; the 5.2-priced pair Phil Jones and Jonny Evans look nailed on, though Rafael will be hoping to cement the right wing-back berth should Ashley Young be ruled out for an extended period of time with the hamstring injury suffered at the Britannia.

With Angel Di Maria still struggling with pelvic problems, Juan Mata continues to earn starts in the United midfield, and has recorded 28 points in his last three home appearances. Up top, managers have the pleasure and pain of a trio of options to choose from. Wayne Rooney’s (10.8) minutes are secured, though his recent withdrawal to a deeper midfield role is a deterrent, whilst up top, Radamel Falcao (10.5) is starting to suggest he could offer us a viable alternative to Robin Van Persie (12.5) – the Colombian has notched returns in three of his last four, and his cheaper price tag and 2.6% ownership could persuade some to place their faith in his abilities.

Crystal Palace

“frisking

With Alan Pardew taking up the Selhurst Park reigns, hope for survival has been renewed, despite the Eagles’ run of just one win in their last 14 league matches. A tricky meeting with Spurs is first up for the new boss, though encounters with Burnley, Everton and Leicester in their subsequent three offer the platform for the new boss to be an instant hit with the Palace fans.

Back-to-back clean sheets have offered promise for the Eagles’ backline assets, with the 4.9-valued Scott Dann the stand-out pick after also scoring in Gameweek 18. Indeed, it’s their capabilities at the other end of the pitch that has been the main problem for the Londoners, who have scored just twice in their last seven, and with Mile Jedinak and Yannick Bolasie off to compete in the Asian Cup and Africa Cup of Nations respectively, the onus now lies with the likes of Jason Puncheon and Man United loanee Wilfried Zaha to deliver.

Also Consider…

Burnley
The Clarets are offered a plum next four to help them find their first win since Gameweek 16; vital home meetings with fellow relegation battlers QPR and Crystal Palace are first up, before a trip to Sunderland and then another Turf Moor fixture against West Brom. Back-to-back goals have raised George Boyd’s Fantasy status from bench warmer to first XI material, and his band of owners will now face the dilemma of how to fit him into their plans over the next four. Strike duo Danny Ings and Ashley Barnes will also be prime candidates for investment, and having proved their mettle against some of the league’s top clubs, they could cause havoc against their lowly opponents.

Leicester
Nigel Pearson’s battlers also have the upcoming schedule in their favour. Just like the Clarets, the Foxes also boast three home fixtures in that period, with Aston Villa, Stoke and Crystal Palace all rolling up to the King Power Stadium. The Africa Cup of Nations looks set to hit Nigel Pearson’s side particularly hard, with the in-form duo of Jeffrey Schlupp and Riyad Mahrez both set to head off to the competition – in their absence, the likes of Leonardo Ulloa and David Nugent, who has earned a goal and an assist in his last two outings, will need to step up to the plate.

Arsenal
The Gunners boast three enticing home fixtures in their next five, as Stoke, Aston Villa and Leicester travel to the Emirates. Arsene Wenger will be hopeful of overturning the dire defensive form that has seen his side concede in their last seven league displays, with 5.2-priced right back Mathieu Debuchy most likely to attract investment if they can tighten up. Further forward, Alexis Sanchez (11.4) and Santi Cazorla (8.2) could be primed to profit – the former has delivered over nine points per appearance over his last three at the Emirates and could punish those who chose to look elsewhere after his blanks in the previous two Gameweeks. Olivier Giroud is available again up front, and having scored three times in the two matches prior to suspension, could appeal to those Wilfried Bony owners looking for a similarly priced replacement.

Liverpool
Thursday’s collapse against Leicester came as something of a surprise after Brendan Rodgers’ outfit had seemingly found their form with an authoritative 4-1 victory over Swansea only three days beforehand. With a top-four finish still within reach, however, the Merseysiders will now be looking to rediscover their resilience and string together some form over the coming weeks, in which they are blessed with a selection of promising fixtures; trips to Sunderland and Aston Villa are up next, followed by a home meeting with West Ham and a visit to struggling rivals Everton.

At the back, Martin Skrtel sat out the Foxes clash due to suspension, though averaged a notable 5.6 points per appearance across his previous five, and, at 5.8, remains the best candidate within the Reds’ rearguard. However, it will be in midfield that Liverpool will receive the most attention, with a recent tactical switch raising the potential of a number of their assets. Raheem Sterling (8.4), Philippe Coutinho (7.6) and Adam Lallana (8.3) have been fielded as the front three over the last five Gameweeks, and whilst the latter’s thigh injury will be a concern, the former two underlined their appeal with an assist apiece against the Foxes. Coutinho is finally beginning to show his class this season, having now delivered points in each of his last four outings, and with an ownership still at just 3.3%, he looks a great differential right now.

    Foster
    Clichy Lescott Zab
    Sanchez Silva Hazard Siggy
    Falcao Costa Kane

    Krul Hutton Marney Duff

I think I have to play Hutton as I already made the mistake of benching him last week but who should he play for this week?
And I'm almost set on Costa(c) this week, it's the week he'll explode hopefully, what do you guys think?

That's not quite accurate... because, over the last 6 weeks the stats show us this:

            Goal Attempts: Kane 20 - Teke 20
            SiB: Kane 11 - Teke 16
            SoT: Kane 6 - Teke 7
Pen. Area Touches: Kane 37 - Teke 38
            Chances Created: Kane 6 - Teke 8

So, the underlying stats say Benteke is performing as well or better than Kane atm.

Although, Kane happens to be on a bit of a hot streak while Benteke is having woeful *luck*.

If Benteke keeps up this torrid pace he'll *have to* come good.
Blah, blah, blah, regression to the mean & all that stats jazz.

Keepers are cheap but don't rotate so well. They both have excellent fixtures in GW25, 31, 32, so those will be a tough call, and are both away from home in 7 of the GWs from 22-38.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

What are the three best strikers we should be considering for our wildcards? Also is 3-5-2 or 3-4-3 the best way to go?

Aguero's return will be key to most answers - but who slots in alongside him - two cheap strikers likes Kane and Austin or is their still value in the likes of Rooney, RVP or Costa?

Me too. Costa's one assist and few bonus just don't tally with his price tag. He's uncaptainable too while Hazard is available.

Costa has been out of form and he's still getting on the scoresheet. When he's on form you have to have him like we saw at the start of the season.

Kun & Kane, and then depends if you want a 3-5-2 or 3-4-3... for me, maybe the best is 3-5-2, so i prefer another cheap option upfront...

If Sturridge is on fire, when he comes back, maybe i change my option

This is my exact thinking on the situation. At the moment it looks important to invest as much as possible in midfield, so I'll probably set up with Jovetic (money ITB for Aguero), Kane & Barnes. But Sturridge will be right at the top of my watchlist.

      3-5-2 doesn't work!
It seems all well & good in theory but, in practice we're faced with one of two terrible options.

      1. We've got a non-playing sub 5mil striker (ie. Vaz Te / Pogrebnyak type) who we then need 2 FT's to get rid of when we realize that we can't afford to have a non-playing sub 5mil striker wasting away on our benches.

      2. We've got the Siggy vs. Downing vs. Kane / Bojan selection headache each & every week.
      Picking Clean Sheets *easy*.
      Picking attacking returns is not...

      - Kane this week... obv.
      - Siggy away to Utd. GW1... put your hand up you 352 Bojan owners!
      - Oh, & of the 9 times Downing's scored 5 of those point hauls came away from home.

3 5 2 works when your midfield is this

        Sanchez silva fab hazard angel/sterling

Easily achievable with a rotating front three of Austin, Kane and Ings (so underrated and Burnley have taken handbrake off)

People keep telling me this is madness. But we'll see. At least until kun is starting again...

          > 3 5 2 works when your midfield is this

352 never works *in the long run* because your bench will include Austin, Kane, Ings, every week...

So, each week you're intentionally benching 6mil to perhaps 8mil (Sterling?) of your total budget.
Conversely, each week those using a 343 are benching about 4.5mil in their 5th mid.
As a result, the 343 lets more of our cash be utilized on the pitch each week.

Oh, and again you can *guess* all you like but, offensive returns are very difficult to predict...

eg. I mean Ings away to Newcastle this week, or Austin away to Arsenal a cpl weeks ago?

I don't see the problem in benching a 5.5 to 6m forward over a 4.5 to 5m midfielder? Splitting hairs a little. Not like I'm suggesting playing 5 at the back.

I think formations are fixated on a little on here. That's not a bad thing. But the guy at the top my mini league is ranked 441 and plays 4 4 2 literally every week.

Here it is in a nutshell...

              $ = Points.

Granted there's value players to be found but, on the whole the more cash on the pitch the more points we can expect to score.

An *extreme* example here but, 1.5mil is the difference between owning Costa or Aguero...*

So, all things equal would you rather play:
              - 343 with Aguero
              - 352 with Costa & a rotating striker / mid pairing

(*We can come up with a 1000 examples, yeah? Like 343 w/ Terry or a 352 w/ N. Taylor... blah, blah, blah.)

To close, I'm currently using a 352 with Siggy, Downing & Austin so, it's a totally viable strat but, again over the long term it just can't be as successful as the 343.

What the f? Why on earth would it be easier to fit Aguero in 343 than in 352? Only makes sense if you're going with two cheap strikers and play them every round. And the recent weeks may have been the only ones in years when that has been a viable strategy, when the best forwards, in fact, have been cheap (Austin, Sakho, Kane).

If cash you look at the average points per Andgame. 3 5 2 is just as viable as 3 4 3. Put simply, strikers are just not scoring consistently enough. If we take kun and kane as accepted, all we're basically arguing over is whether Cos outscore San or Fab. For me, he'll outscore neither and I'd rather have that extra cash in midfield. The argument pounds means points is nonsense. Every year the top teams will have at least four players in who would have started very cheap and been amazing (Ramsey, sig etc)

                  > Why on earth would it be easier to fit Aguero in 343 than in 352?

It wouldn't but, I can keep going on down the line until we get to a point where the 343 gets a 4.5mil mid & in turn gets to spend it on a player who'll be playing each & every week.
                  (Perahps, Terry over Naylor?)

                  > . And the recent weeks may have been the only ones in years when that has been a viable strategy, when the best forwards, in fact, have been cheap (Austin, Sakho, Kane).

Great, super... you take benching to Austin, Sakho, or Kane each week & I'll take an extra 1.5mil to spend where I like. 🙂

                    1. I said that with Kane, Austin and Sakho, it has now recently been cheaper to go with 3-4-3 than 3-5-2.

                    2. Kane cost me 4.8. The cheapest midfielder to rot on your bench costs 4.3 now. Enjoy your 0.5! Don't spend it all at once!

You're not really getting the point: it is that what you really argue for is having just 7 strong attacking players and no rotation. Whether you play with 3 or 2 attackers is irrelevant. You can just as well have a Barnes or Zamora, than an Albrighton or Marney to optimise the price of the fielded players.

The position that you criticise is having 8 viable attacking players to rotate, in which case a bit more money is put on bench every GW, and again, it is irrelevant whether one plays 3 or 2 forwards.

That's an interesting point, but I'm not sure I agree. I think the 3-4-3 has generally proven to be the optimal formation with a "set and forget" formula, because as you've pointed out you're able to maximize your money on the field But if you're able to bench the right guy each week (Which may just be blind luck, but it could happen) my guess would be that have 8 good attackers (Which would mean more money on the bench every week) would have the higher upside.

In fact, the "best dead team" research has every year now shown that if you "set and forget", the best option is 5-4-1 or 4-5-1.

What if you use points per game? I remember reading an article somewhere on the web ('fraid I can't find the link) that the best set and forget team from last season using this year's prices would have been a 3-4-3 featuring Lambert/Rooney/Adebayor up top.

I guess by set and forget, I meant having an attacker that you bench every week, but still making transfers as injuries/fixtures change.

No, definitely no. No Roo. But I think it was something like 4-4-2 last season, with Giroud and Suarez upfront (Suarez captain, Giroud vice captain to double his strong points in first 5 GW). I think the third striker was an über cheapie who played some strong matches in the end of the season.

Suarez was not included because he wasn't in this year's game. I'm 90% Rooney was in. Also there was a minutes minimum to knock out the 'arry Kane/James Wilson's of the world.

This forum. We were here, on this forum, able to come up with several last summer. We beat the real winner by a large margin with several teams, and I'm sure someone has been able to count even better teams.

Unfortunately, there's so long time since those posts that they cannot be easily found anymore unless someone bookmarked them.

The point is, if you're playing with just one XI and never change it, it can as well be 5 midfielders and 2 consistently scoring strikers, although people who do that usually have 3 strikers and just 4 midfielders.

From the Fpl Discovery blog post entitled:
                  Season 2013/14 Summary – Formations

                  - The difference in formations seen above results from the popularity of the ‘4-4-2′ scheme among casual FPL players. Most of them were probably dead teams.

                  - Top teams were basically choosing from 4 formations: ‘3-4-3′ was the most popular choice, ‘4-3-3′ was the second choice; while ‘4-4-2′ and ‘3-5-2′ could be witnessed in 5% teams each.

                  Source: https://fpldiscovery.wordpress.com/summary_13_14/formations/

So, if the anecdotes & these hard numbers aren't enough, I don't know what else to say other than good luck with the 352 I hope it works for you! 🙂

No, what I am saying is that in last season, when the top10 was analysed, there were a few who used 4 or 5 defenders. So, that may have made the difference between having a decent season and real success.

This has been a good debate. Given I cheat and have two teams (my second team, managed by my cat, has never finished below my main one) I will be experimenting with both options over the next few months. I agree that history is against me, but I honestly think packing the midfield with a play every week five is the way to go this season.

I've always played a 3-4-3 and I agree that historically it's easier that way, but my point is this:

Most weeks, one of your attackers blanks, so if you bench/start correctly, your potential points are higher with a Kane than an Albrighton.

It's more difficult (You have to make a decision every week that may not be predictable) and frustrating (Points on the bench make you pull your hair out) but I'm still not convinced the 3-4-3 is better in all situations, given that post shows that not many people try the 3-5-2, how do we know?

Put another way: With perfect foresight, what would the optimal team be? I'm arguing that a hybrid 3-4-3/3-5-2 + 4/5 defender sets would be better than a set in stone 3-4-3, which I guess isn't totally relevant because we don't have perfect foresight...

We'd pick the Top 11 scoring players regardless of their position, right?

Oh, and I'd love to see the algorithm / script that can head back to GW1 & map out the absolute *best* score one could achieve of they somehow *knew* the perfect transfer & captain choice to make each week.

You may have tapped out due to your frustration with CM, but I have another thought/point/ramble:

FPL discovery tells us that most players play a 3-4-3 and that a higher % of players in the top 10k play a 3-4-3, but most of the difference in that % is that top players don't play a 4-4-2. I don't think that proves the 3-4-3 is superior, it just proves that more people play it. I'd also love to see what the comparative finishes among "active" players would be. I'd imagine that a lot of the 4-4-2's are "dead teams."

I guess my ultimate feeling is that there's more than one way to skin a cat, and while the 3-4-3 is the most common way among top FPLers it's not necessarily the best/only way.

Only 5% of the Top 10k used the 352.
That was tied for dead last with the 442.

But the random sample showed just 7% playing a 3-5-2. That doesn't prove that a 3-5-2 formation is bad, it just shows that not many people play it.

PS: I should have read the FPL discovery article instead of just looking at the charts, the author says he thinks the 4-4-2 were mostly dead teams, which I think lends some credence to my theory: That most top teams play a 3-4-3 does not mean that a 3-4-3 is necessarily superior, because the managers who play a 3-4-3 are not equal to managers who play a 4-4-2 in ways other than the formation they use. (As in, 3-4-3 managers are more likely to be paying attention than 4-4-2 managers.)

Over 70% of teams in the Top 10k used the 343.
                        Fact.

                        Now, hold on!
I fully understand the difference between correlation vs. causation here too...

So, I'm not saying the 343 is WHY they're in the Top 10k.

Although, these numbers do show that there's a rather strong correlation between using the 343 formation & being in the Top 10k by season's end.

For the most part I think we agree. In general, I play the 3-4-3. Strikers score the most goals, so I get as many of them on the field as I can. And I do wonder how much of the top finishers mostly using a 3-4-3 is a self fulfilling prophecy. You're a good FPL player and you believe that the 3-4-3 is the best formation so you use it. But like you said correlation/causation etc etc 😉

I think you have to be flexible. There's nothing intrinsically superior in a 3-4-3 formation other than, as you've said, it allows you to maximize your money on the field. So far this year, I'd say it looks like a 3-5-2 would have worked better due to inconsistent striker performances. Will that continue? I dunno, but with the plethora of good value options (Austin/Kane/Downing/Siggy) who are punching with the elite priced options, I think not punting on your 8th attacker spot (Which means an occasional 3-5-2 formation) is a more legitimate strategy than ever before.

How come is the benching dilemma better when you bench midfielder than when you bench a forward? The real difference is, you only get 7 strong attacking players and are happy to not have to think of benching anybody, whereas others are happy to have that choice between their 8 strong attacking players each week.

And your option 1 is made good by your own first example. Or how is it better to have a sub 5mil midfielder rotting in our bench rather than having a sub 5mil striker Kane, who we can actually use?

          > How come is the benching dilemma better when you bench midfielder than when you bench a forward?

          Price.
Benching a 4.5mil mid vs. a 5.5mil to 6mil fwd means we have an extra million to bolster our attack & backline.

          > you only get 7 strong attacking players and are happy to not have to think of benching anybody, whereas others are happy to have that choice between their 8 strong attacking players each week.

          Lovely, more power to them.
Although, outside of the fact that a 343 has an extra million on the pitch each week; those who play the 343 will *never* miss out on an offensive return while those who us the 352 most certainly will.

Finally, a 343 allows those who use it to have their 4th defender as their first sub because, it's much easier to predict a clean sheet than it is to know when Downing or Ings will score.

(PS. Oh, all of this & a decade of statistics to show the 343 is by far & away the most utilized formation by those in the Top 10k each & every year.)

        Triggered the WC

        Costa Kane Falcao

I can't not have costa who has scored 14 goals and has Newcastle at home next.

Kane is too good value. I had him at 5.2M and played him for his big haul.

We all need United influences over their amazing fixtures - falcao is also starting to hit form and is 2 M cheaper than RVP

Once I've seen Kun play more than 60 mins then he's in for either costa or falcao depending on the form of those 2 strikers. It's easy! I've left myself 2M ITB to do this I case it's falcao that makes way.

I don't see how it can be any other way ? Or am I missing something.

You can have Kane as your alternating 2/3rd striker in a 352 as he is so cheap. Most of us got him less than 5.0 and is still cheap. In seasons past, a 352 team would have a 3rd striker with a similair price

I physically don't understand the Costa love. Not because he's a poor option. But because both Fab and Hazard are cheaper and offer the same returns. Given having three is madness, it's a simple choice for me to name those two in midfield.

      Kun Kane Ings

This allows a midfield of those two plus two other very big hitters AND a decent defence. The 7 to 10m forwards simply offer no value when compared to the pool in the 5 to 6.5 bracket.

Anyone know why bony is red flagged due to ACON but Yaya isn't?

      Tourney starts the 17th.
So, technically Yaya could feature on the 10th?
Although, idk the Elephants pre-tournament training / friendly sched.

Have a play with the season ticker.
Two or three good options on there, it's a matter of picking the one you think is best.

      Sunderland & a non-playing backup.
I think that extra .5mil goes a long way in beefing up our outfields each week.

😯 It is a great shame the Cup is no longer considered the must try, must win cup for every team in it.

Am hoping ManU don't try when they rack up to Yeovil this weekend. Sadly I can't go, but which I could. If MK dons can do it so can Yeovil.

Didn't they draw with Yeovil in the first game a few years ago (could be 20yrs the way my memory is going).

Think so. It's the whiff of Thatcher's cider as they enter the town, makes those Man U players too giddy. 🙂

No magic of "The Cup" for you then Jafooli. I feel sad for you. Little teams beating or holding the big boys to a draw.

Nah, only kidding.....great when big teams get dumped out the cup by small teams like the one I support.

Wigan two years ago and nearly Hull last year were great for the comp and football in general.

            C'mon Yeovil....
