With January wildcards now active we wanted to offer the community a regular article to look at the key strategies, players and teams we should be considering. This regular article will focus on the thoughts of one of the Fantasy Football Scout team on their winter wildcard progress. Feel free to help them with any deliberations they have and use this article to post your wildcard thoughts or Rate My Wildcard Teams (RMWT). First up is myself.

Jonty’s RMWT

Green/Foster

Terry Clichy Wisdom N.Taylor Hutton

Hazard Fabregas Sanchez Sigurdsson Boyd

Aguero Bony Kane

Forwards

The key issue to consider in terms of timing the wildcard is Aguero’s return. He is the top premium forward to have without question. But if you wildcard before his predicted return (Gameweek 22) you will be playing catch up to squeeze him in. It is probably the key reason I’m waiting until at least I’m certain he is fit to start. Elsewhere up front I think balance is key and the ability to be flexible enough to jump quickly on bandwagons. Swansea’s Wilfried Bony is earmarked for the mid-price attacking slot in my side, but a lot will depend on when he returns from the Africa Cup of Nations. In the meantime I may opt to stick with Charlie Austin and keep some money back. Who else should I be considering in this price range. Our sub editor Tim recommends I consider Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud. Is he right?

There is value in cheap strikers and my final choice likely be Harry Kane, although I’m keeping an eye on Tottenham acquisitions up front. Currently he is the most consistent Tottenham option as the midfielders are sharing returns.

Midfield

The midfield is where formation strategies come into play. The key choice is 3-5-2 or 3-4-3. With Aguero back and players like Austin maintaining form there is a strong argument for playing three forwards, which means I’ll revert back to my pre-Christmas strategy of a four-man midfield. This means reluctantly I’ll draft in George Boyd, who is still offering good value. Elsewhere I’m keeping Alexis Sanchez and Eden Hazard and will look to draft in Cesc Fabregas. His consistent returns mean points on the board each week. For my mid-price midfield position, Sigurdsson has the edge over Stewart Downing for me due to strong fixtures in February.

Defence

Speaking of fixtures, the key set of games I look at when winter wildcarding is February, not January. From Gameweeks 24 to 29 Manchester City, Hull, Aston Villa, West Brom, Swansea, Arsenal and Chelsea have arguably the best fixtures. It is these sides that will dominate my defence. With Manchester City and Chelsea I want a defender from each as I anticipate strong clean sheet returns as the season progresses. But which defender should I get from these elite sides?  Currently I’m happy to take a benching or two and opt for Gael Clichy due to price for Manchester City.  For Chelsea, John Terry’s goalscoring ability cannot be overlooked. He has the edge currently for me. I’m happy to explore other options in their defence though. Another option I’m considering is Southampton’s Ryan Bertrand.

For the remaining three defensive roles I’m opting for budget options I can rotate. This essentially means keeping my three current cheap defenders Andre Wisdom, Alan Hutton and Neil Taylor. Each have great fixtures in February and have rewarded me handsomely so far. I can’t see any need to change them.

Teams I would recommend avoiding when wildcarding are Liverpool, Burnley, West Ham and Leicester, whose February fixtures are diabolical. Of these, only George Boyd will grace my wildcard side.

Goalkeepers

Cheap goalkeeper rotation is still the most effective policy as Saata showed in his excellent recent community article. I currently have Tom Heaton and Ben Foster. With Tony Pulis taking over at West Brom, Foster is staying put. West Brom’s fixtures also promise strong clean sheet returns in February. To partner him I’m opting for Rob Green who has made the most saves so far this season. This time last year I picked Vito Mannone for my winter wildcard based on the number of saves he’d made – I ended up fielding him most weeks and enjoying several surprise double-digit hauls.

Note: I used the Rate My Team tool in the members area to construct my wildcard team and ensure it was within my current budget.

Welcome to our first regular winter wildcard discussions. I've tried to cover some key issues in my team deliberations that will hopefully spark discussion. Also feel free to put your RMWCTs in the comment thread in this article. The aim with a dedicated wildcard article is that it will be easier to find key advice when you come to wildcarding.

Jonty, if you decide to go with giroud up front, why not swap Sanchez for Di Maria too

That would be the thinking. Tim, our sub editor, is among those that think Giroud can match Sanchez's output. Currently Rooney, RVP and Falcao are very expensive for what they offer and ADM looks on paper the best value and arguably best option among ManU players. This is perhaps why waiting a week or two is key. But yes ADM very much on my radar.

Giroud could do well, but only by default of being the only real centre forward - I personally would prefer Bony, but Man U fixtures make owning one of their forwards essential IMO

Great WC team, similar to mine before I decided to ditch Chelsea AND City defender to PVA and Bertrand to have a front 7 of:

Sanchez Hazard Fabregas Silva(will be ADM)
      Falcao(will be Aguero) Costa Kane

Cheers! It took me a long time to decide on but with Foster-Bertrand-Wisdom and a rotation between Cameron/Hutton/Wasilewski/PVA or whoever you can afford as your other 2 it leaves a strong front 7, without ever really needing Boyd and giving a hell of a lot of captaincy options! Comes down to, will 2 cheap defenders and a premium mid outscore 2 premium defenders and a Siggy/Downing!

Do you really think Costa is worth the asking price over a Chelsea defender + cheaper forward. I mean, his points are similar to Terry or Austin, but for approx £5m more?

        1. Big4FPL
          • 11 Years

That was the main point I had to decide on, but I felt with Costa, having him since he was 10.5, if he picks up some form being Chelsea's only real striker, it'll be harder to bring him in then a chelsea defender. I could use 2 FT's to do Costa->Austin/Ings/Giroud and do, say, Cameron->Terry...however I couldn't do that the opposite way

Valid point - debating myself whether to keep Costa or not. Not unthinkable that his returns will take an upturn, as you say.

My other thinking was that most people will have 3/4 of my mids and, again, most people will only have Aguero and not Costa. If you have the 6 of them you're never kicking yourself for not having any of them when they hit a big score, whereas with someone like Terry, being realistic, he's not going to keep scoring goals. So, yes, the defender/s may have weeks where they get a clean sheet and bonus but the extra premium mid would hopefully make up for that...and maybe even be captained, unlike the defender!

Don't quite agree with you there, mate. You state that you'll be kicking yourslef if Costa scores big - but first half of season show that others strikers (Austin/Bony) provide similar returns for less money. For the matches which Costa could provide a haul. I'd probably be captaining Hazard anyway 🙂 And even though Terry's not going to continue scoring goal at recent rate, Chelsea clean sheets will come in quite regularly. So to me, if keeping Costa, it would be in anticipation of greater returns than lower valued strikers like Bony or Austin in second half of season. On the other hand there's also the issue of Sturridge returning. Will be easier to do a swap if needed if having Costa in the team.

Alright, yeah, that's a fair point mate! Personally, I think Austin will go downhill from here, I've had him since 2 weeks before his hattrick (don't ask me what gameweek aha!!) and, it may be kneejerk but I don't think he'll continue. Bony I wouldn't go for right now due to ACON but if I was going to get rid of Costa, it would be for him or Giroud, which would then give me enough for a chelsea defender. Just think, currently, there's more value in defence than up front but I suppose thats each to their own opinion!:-)

Dropping Austin could be knee jerk. Even though he blanked last week , he still was #2 in goal attempts and #1 in shots inside the box and he has similar stats throughout the season.

Hey there Van Gaal...amidst all this chatter you have made an awesome point!! That is exactly what I usually do each year: find good cheap DEFs and load-up up top. Your comment made me sit back and say "Why do I feel so sure that I should own Ivan or Terry (at least, and maybe Baines with them) when my usual formula is to go cheap?"

Your comment provides the proper answer...until I realize that we can actually get TWO strong defenders with a mid-priced midfielder instead of a high-priced midfielder and two cheapos.

And Chelski DEFs are as much of a sure-thing as we can get this year!

Cheers for the reply! Yeah, I totally get where you're coming from, the reason I've gone for all out attack is that it's easier to downgrade than upgrade. If Chelsea are CS'ing every match I can downgrade Costa and need to use 2 FT's or take "-4" max, the other way would take 2FT's and a -4 or a -8 minimum! Also, clean sheets are harder to predict than goals and if my premium mid averages at least an assist or even CS point a week it can make up for it....especially as I don't know if Siggy/Downing/Chadli will keep making points or not!

What do you mean by form? Often on here people mean FPL returns but that's misleading. Form is what players do on the pitch, FPL returns are an imprecise measurement of that.

Costa is in good form as a player but hasn't had outstanding FPL returns recently. If he keeps his form there will most likely be an upturn in FPL points scored at some point and possibly very soon.

FPL management is surely about predicting what points will be scored rather than chasing points that have already been accrued.

Nice front 7. Although, I'm thinking I need a chelsea defender (currently Azpili, but will think about Terry).
So- that begs the question- Fabregas or Costa.
I might go with Fabregas, Hazard and a defender as my Chelsea triple up. I figure that covers their attacking returns as well even without Costa.
So in line with that i'd be thinking about an Aguero, Giroud/Austin, Kane partnership up front.

Also, 3 Chelsea attacking players I think is an overkill. If Chelsea play whack one game then you blank on 3 rather than if you had a defender you might only blank on 2 for a poor Chelsea performance

I think the issue with Giroud is that Sanchez is looking almost essential, if Walcott gets back to his best having both may be an option. Giroud could therefore be too much Arsenal attack. Same as the Hazard, Costa and Fab dilemma.

I think Jovetic and Boyd leaves you vulnerable. That is two very benchable players. I'd look to improve on Jovetic. I'd also look to Foster instead of Forster in goal. Keep an eye on the Pulis effect on WBA - it can offer potent clean sheet returns as his experience with Stoke and Palace showed.

Thanks Jonty, you don't like the double Southampton defence then? I agree re WBA but they are just so poor, not sure even Pulis can tighten that ship! Jovetic is only there until Aguero is fit and Boyd is my 1st sub, just like the fact that he starts every week and may surprise with a goal every now and then.

@Jonty: Don't like the Swans Triple Up.....You can go for a WBA-NEW combo in defense along with Wisdom and instead of Naylor..plus you need more of United Players and Probably a Liverpool too

Yep....although Liverpool's fixtures in February are truly awful, plus Liverpool are pretty awful anyway at the moment. I think the WBA - NEW is worth a look at though...depends who New bring in.

ADM firmly on the radar as my ManU option.

How's this looking , wildcard is active now

        Heaton Panti
        Terry Bertrand Tripper PvA Lescott
        Sanchez Hazard AdM Fabregas Johnson
        Ings RVP Kane

Double BUR and SUN defensive rotation great fixtures perfect rotation , Lescott covers the Pulis effect and offers goal threat , Terry and Bertie two top scoring defenders in game and SOT and CHE defenders are vital

Gone for Haz and Fab double up ( with defender ) as I feel this is the best use of 3x Chelsea spots , AdM and Sanchez too good to ignore , Johnson rotates with Ings home and away to will switch to 3-5-2 sometimes

Ings is basically a 4 week punt , will probably switch to Berahino gw25 when fixtures turn for BUR and WBA, RVP is just a Aguero placeholder and on Pens and will be a straight swap for Kun, Kane is Kane and I got him and 4.9 and his going nowhere

I could get Lampard for Johnson , just don't like City's next 3 fixtures until Kun is fit , Dzeko and Jovetic will share game time , and the back to normal deeper mids will share the points over next 3 imo

                  Like the Ings/Berahino thinking…..good idea.

I have a similar defense, went for Wisdom as he is cheaper. Midfield is good, not sure on johnson though but he could be a good differential.

                    Similar to my current draft:

                    Heaton - Pantilimon
                    Terry - Trippier - PVA - Hutton - Jenkinson
                    Silva - Hazard - ADM - Sanchez - Chadli
                    Costa - Kane - Ings

My main decisions are whether to have Costa/Fab for the next couple (probably one or other will have to be ditched for Aguero) and whether to give myself the benching headache of 8 playable forwards or not! Yours is definitely making me think of just having a 5th midfield benchwarmer instead

I think Fabregas, even Oscar offers better value than Costa. Prior to Christmas I had Oscar over Costa for many weeks - he outscored him but cost 3m less. I'd definitely swap Costa out for a mid price striker.

On the whole, providing alternatives for this player and that is simply a matter of personal preference. What not many are commenting on is the structure of the team - and here Jonty has a good mix of top, mid and budget priced players in every area except the GK (which is still an OK strategy). This allows the ability to be reactive - which should not be undervalued.

Cheers and yes that is the aim. The thing with wildcarding in January is that we are still dealing with unknowns even up to gwk 24, plus the fixtures really change in addition to management changes and new recruits. My aim is to be able to move quickly. If for example a team brings in an 8m striker who is this year's Cisse or Jelavic I want to be able to swap Bony/Giroud out for him swiftly.

Thanks! I think hits are justified up to the Jan WC, then I try to calm down. Building a good TV helps, I usually have a good second half to the season.

I think that these articles should start with a health warning :

"The views expressed here are the hypothetical musings of contributors if they were to activate their Wildcard now. We do not condone or suggest that you activate your Wildcard now. In fact, none of the contributors are activating their Wildcard now. If you chose to do so, you do so at your own risk."

                    My article actually advocates waiting.

Also, I'm not sure a health warning is needed in the same way that when I listen to the Beatles Yellow Submarine I don't immediately go out and buy a submarine and paint it yellow. It's a given really that its up to the reader to do what they want with the information. 😉

Yep - a key mistake some are making is basing their wildcard on January's fixtures. When it comes to February they will be in all sorts of bother as their are some big fixture swings. Gwks 24 to 29 are the key ones I'm looking at.

Think RVP is too expensive. Prefer Bertrand to Zaba due to rotation. Would use the money saved to upgrade downing. Rest looks good.

Your team looks balanced although I think Zabaleta is too expensive for his returns atm, I would think about a cheaper defender like Clyne/Bertrand. Quite like the double WBA defender strategy and lets see how RvP hangs on to his spot but if you´re able to loose Zabaleta and RvP you should be able to buy a respectful midfield.

There are a lot of good things about this team you put together, but I'm not sure I would feel so comfortable with three Swansea players. In particular I'm not sure about Bony. I don't think he's a particularly good player, especially in away games. Setting up your team like this you'll have to play both him and Siggy in basically every game. I like Mr Tim's shout of Giroud much more.

Good format for a set of articles this, I've found myself wondering what to do with my winter wildcard with just a few days left before and this might help stop that.

Cheers...yep the mid price striker is the trickiest role to fill. Giroud makes more sense and the top teams tend to get better post Christmas.

                    Boyd ADM Siggy Fab Sanchez

                    Costa Kane ?? (12 million)

Activated wildcard. Enough money for Sergio to go in after Arsenal game.

Striker for two games? Nothing really jumps out at me, Ings has good fixtures but not sure if I should take a gamble with someone like Falcao/Giroud.

Foster/Panti don't rotate very well (at least not home/away). Maybe Foster/Green (not sure if it's better at all)

For the striker spot i'd go with Falcao.

Wildcard activated, after a bit of reshuffling i came up with this. Defence is a bit punty, but all teams have good fixtures.

                    Foster - Green
                    Debuchy - Bertrand - PVA - Cameron - Wisdom
                    Hazard - Fabs - Sanchez - ADM - Boyd
                    Falcao - Giroud - Kane

*exact $$ to do Falcao -> Aguero when he's back

                      I could also do:

Am also a wee bit curious about Austin - he's in my current draft, but I worry about it drying up for him, they're fixtures get a bit rough too. Gut says Harry will keep his job with Tony Fernandes being understandably distracted

I've already pencilled in Austin > Sahko for after ACON - WHM can score home and away, whereas QPR are just appalling away from home

My draft is smilar to yours (though they're all pretty similar, truth be told) save for Siggi over Boyd

For the 3-way defensive rotation spot, Stoke also compliments the Sunderland + West Brom/Villa duo exceptionally well.

                    Sun/ Wba/ Stoke: Gw21- 38
HUL, lei, BUR, bur, QPR, WBA, HUL, hul, AVL, CPL, QPR, LEI, cpl, SUN, SOT/swa, TOT/new, BUR, LIV

                    Sun/ Avl/ Stoke: Gw21- 38
LEI, lei, BUR, new, QPR, WBA, HUL, WBA, AVL, CPL, NEW, CPL, QPR, SUN, swa, WHU, LEI, BUR

                    Cameron (4.2m) is a steal

*(Gw 37 should be LEI, not BUR in the first rotation)
(Gw21 it's lei away, not LEI at home for the second rotation)

If you fancy H/a rotation vs fixture difficulty, you can opt to play your defender at home to any one of LIV, EVE, TOT or SOT where away games comes up in both rotations

                    Here's my first draft.

                    Green Foster
                    Duff Cameron Hutton Wisdom PVA
                    ADM Hazard Fab Sanchez Boyd
                    Aguero Costa Kane

                    0.1 ITB.

Main thoughts are getting Aguero and ADM into my team.
Will wait until After GW 22/23 for Aguero.

S'a bit weak at the back, no? Fab > Oscar would help, Costa > one of the many cheaper options would be an even better bet IMHO
