Romelu Lukaku’s late leveller keeps Everton in the FA Cup after a 1-1 home draw with West Ham. Leighton Baines and Andy Carroll head into the weekend as injury doubts after missing out at Goodison. Luke Shaw and Daley Blind could return for United’s clash with Southampton, reports grow of a possible move to City for Wilfried Bony, whilst Wojciech Szczesny looks poised to be re-installed between the sticks for Arsenal this weekend.

LATE LUKAKU STRIKE KEEPS EVERTON’S HOPES ALIVE

Everton boss Roberto Martinez made three changes to his side for their FA Cup meeting with West Ham last night, returning to a flat back-four after recently trialling three in defence. Sylvain Distin, Bryan Oviedo and Romelu Lukaku were brought in, with the latter notching a 92nd-minute leveler to earn his side a replay.

Distin sustained a groin problem and was forced off after 71 minutes of the tie, whist Leighton Baines missed out entirely with a knock, though Martinez confirmed that he expects the left-back to be fit in time for their weekend clash with City:

“Baines picked up a knock in the last game – it’s nothing serious, we’re just making sure he’s fully fit and we’re not taking any risks. Expect him to be available for the weekend.â€

The Scout Says: Despite the late celebrations, there’s no doubt that this is still a troubling time for the Toffees, who have won just once in their last nine domestic matches. To compound matters, the Merseysiders are rated second worst in our ticker for the next five fixtures, which involves encounters with City, Liverpool and Chelsea, suggesting that their toils could well continue. Lukaku will be optimistic that his strike will see him recalled in the league after having had to settle for a bench role in the last two Gameweeks, though he, like Baines, is unlikely to tempt much investment with the Toffees’ schedule and form in mind, with many current owners likely to ditch the duo’s services with their winter Wildcards.

HAMMERS PEGGED BACK

Sam Allardyce opted to make four changes to his West Ham team for last night’s cup clash, with Alex Song, Diafra Sakho, Cheik Kouyate and Andy Carroll those to drop out in favour of Matt Jarvis, Kevin Nolan, Enner Valencia and Mark Noble. James Collins retained his place in the Hammers’ backline, despite the availability of James Tomkins, and netted the opener from a Morgan Amalfitano corner.

Post-match, Big Sam revealed that Carroll missed out with a foot injury sustained in training:

“Andy kicked the floor in training and obviously his foot’s a bit sore so we didn’t bring him with us. We didn’t (want to) risk the fact that if he’d played today it would’ve probably got worse.â€

In better news, however, it has been confirmed that Song will now miss the African Cup of Nation (ACoN) with Cameroon and be available for the Hammers throughout January, after announcing his retirement from international football.

The Scout Says: Is it possible for Carroll to go a couple of months without picking up a fresh injury? His Fantasy owners will be despairingly asking that question, with his role in this weekend’s trip to Swansea now hanging in the balance. With Sakho either injured or jetting off to the ACoN, Allardyce will be desperate to have the big Geordie fit as soon as possible, though a prolonged absence could see Valencia profit; the 6.4-valued forward looks set for a return to the starting XI in the league anyway, though could be the sole focus of the Hammers’ attack if no other striker is available to line up beside him. Big Sam will at least take comfort in Song’s imminent return from Africa, with the Barcelona loanee now set to hand the Londoners a major boost in the middle of the park. Meanwhile, yesterday’s match saw Stewart Downing draw his fourth consecutive blank in all competitions, and with the Hammers’ problems building ahead of him in attack, an exodus of his 25% ownership could be on the cards, bearing in mind his next six (swa, HUL, liv, MNU, sou, tot).

BONY TRANSFER RUMOURS INTENSIFY

A number of reports yesterday revealed that Swansea striker Wilfried Bony is on the verge of a £30 million transfer to Man City after the two clubs entered talks earlier this week.

The Scout Says: Manuel Pellegrini insinuated at the start of the month that City could do business in the January transfer window, and it’s seemingly taken little time for the Chilean to put his money where his mouth is. The Bony news will, however, dishearten many Fantasy managers, with the forward’s potential position in the Sky Blues’ pecking order a major drawback; with Sergio Aguero clearly the number one when fit, the Ivorian will surely be prone to rotation with Stevan Jovetic and Edin Dzeko, thus seriously denting the prospects of an asset who has proven so reliable over the past couple of seasons, scoring nine times already in the current campaign. Back at Swansea, meanwhile, life without Bony will surely be tough, though Bafetimbi Gomis’s prospects at 6.5 could be boosted if Garry Monk doesn’t decide to immediately splash the cash and find a replacement up front – with loanee Nelson Oliveira also in the mix, we could be handed a mid-price option to consider as the Swans’ leading man, should Bony indeed depart.

MAN UNITED HANDED INJURY BOOST

Reports suggest that Luke Shaw and Daley Blind could be in contention to face Southampton on Sunday after recovering from ankle and knee injuries respectively. The latter has been out of action since November but, having trained with United’s first team for the past two weeks, could now be ready to make his return.

The Scout Says: Having played every minute of the season prior to succumbing to injury, it seems fairly certain that Blind will be reinstated in Louis van Gaal’s first XI as soon as he reaches the right level of fitness. Likely to play alongside Michael Carrick in the middle of the park, his return could have a knock-on effect on Wayne Rooney’s position and see the United captain move behind the front two – after blanking for the past two Gameweeks, such a scenario would be welcome news for the 10.8-priced striker’s 22.5% ownership. With Angel Di Maria also in contention to start after a goalscoring substitute appearance against Yeovil Town in the FA Cup, United are beginning to build themselves back to full strength, and now have the fixtures in hand to flourish over their next six (SOU, qpr, LEI, whm, BUR, swa). It’s hard to see how Juan Mata might fit into their set-up now, though, and the Reds’ top scoring midfielder could find that his minutes are far from guaranteed from here on in.

SZCZESNY EYES STOKE START

Wojciech Szczesny is expected to return to Arsenal’s starting XI this weekend, despite off-field problems having supposedly jeopardised his place.

The Scout Says: Recent rumours surrounding the goalkeeper – which suggested he was set to be dropped for an indefinite period after a dressing room fall-out with Arsene Wenger – appear to be unfounded, then, with the 4.8-priced David Ospina now likely to return to the bench after being handed a start in the Gunners’ FA Cup win over Hull. The north London outfit have three great home fixtures in their next five (STK, AVL, LEI) to boost their appeal, though with a little uncertainty still surrounding the situation between the sticks , Mathieu Debuchy (5.2) and Per Metersaker (6.0) are still the most secure and stand-out options in their defensive ranks.

Definitely. Incredible film - quite true to the original Joseph Conrad novel too, albeit set 100 years or so later. That's well worth a read.

I've just started reading The Wheel of Time books so I won't be reading any other book until 2016 I'd say!

I might give it a watch on the weekend, I think I saw the movie length and couldn't be bothered at the time

Watch the documentary about the making of it too. Almost as thrilling as the film.

The Dark Knight Trilogy is the third best trilogy in Cinema history. Tim Burton's Batman are an insult to Batman itself, even as a kid when i started reading Batman comic books i could see how Tim Burton didn't know anything about Batman. He said it himself that he had never read a Batman comic book.

Uhmm...no, actually. The first one is a disaster with no respect for Batman and its characters. The characters development is awful and the writing is terrible. The writing in The Dark Knight Trilogy is derived from literature, the best writing ever seen in any blockbuster film, we're really talking about two completely different things.
Tim Burton's Batmans are like Rihanna. Nolan's are like Dire Straits.

Well, considering what Alan Moore has done with "comic books", i'd say that if you can take something and make it even better, why shouldn't you? Especially if you're actually respecting the source material as well.

And by the way Bruce Wayne actually meets Freud in Gotham by Gaslight.

The Tim Burton ones though were at least fun. While I have reservations about the Dark Knight films they are from the best source material Tim Sale and Jeph Loeb's Long Halloween and Dark Victory comics.

They are my favourite Batman comics- especially the relationship between Gordon, Dent and Batman. I recommend if you haven't already read them.

I like The Long Halloween but i don't love it, i like the noir feel which Nolan kind of translated into Batman Begins and The Dark Knight(although Batman Begins is loosely based on Year One). Dark Victory is pretty decent too but a repetition of The Long Halloween. My favourite Batman novels are Arkham Asylum, Year One and The Return of The Dark Knight.

Scott Snyder's run on the new Batman is great. I hope they make a film out of Court of Owls - that'd work really well as a film.

Yep, love all of those you mentioned. Another I'd recommend if you can find it is a trade paperback of Strange Apparitions - collects a bunch of Marshall Rogers pencilled 1970s Detective Comics. Really odd.

I never managed to read Strange Apparitions, it's been on Amazon.UK for quite some time but the prices are too high.
Including The Court of Owls in a film would be very interesting, also because it focuses on Batman's detective skills as it should be. Black Mirror is even better.
I also love Morrison's Batman and Robin and Batman and Son.

Completely forgot Black Mirror in that list - yes, that's fantastic. I like the detective ones much more than the biff bang pow plots so really enjoyed that.

Friends of recommended those Morrison ones - will pick up soon. So many comics - so little time.

Re Strange Apparitions - worth checking Ebay for that. I got it there for £10 in really good condition. Comes up rarely but much cheaper than Amazon.

One more - Batman 100. Paul Pope insane look on Gotham in 22nd century gotham where a strange man of legend with a cape stalks the roof tops. Shouldn't work but it does.

I've read Batman 100 like six or seven years ago and didn't like. It wasn't bad objectively speaking but it was way too alternative for me.

I also kind of like Hush, it's stupid, dumb and messy but it's fun and the art is amazing.

Paul Pope is definitley an acquired taste. His Battling Boy is good, like Kick Ass meets Thor meets High Noon.

I'll look out for Hush. Always keen on discovering new Batman reads.

Joel Schumacher's are much worse than Tim Burton's but i have to say that the design and the feel of his Gotham and his production design as well are much superior. Those are the only decent things, though.

I was being sarcastic. They were truly awful, he was trying to combine elements of the 1960’s tv show and Burtons dark theme to make it family friendly.

Liking your input and this post in general though, I consider myself a bit of a batman geek so nice to have my eyes opened up by other like-minded people.

Awesome scene. Bane was a great villain and Tom Hardy's performance was really good (I even liked the voice), unfortunately it was always going to be compared with Heath Ledger as the Joker so he hasn't got the credit that he deserves for the role imo.

Bane was great for sure. I could watch any of those movies over and over again and I'd never get bored. I did think it was a little difficult to ascertain what Bane was saying in one or two scenes, though!

Tough, will think of others later I'm sure but 5 desert island films would be.
          Godfather (both 1 & 2)
          Matrix
          Fight club
          Betty Blue (extended version)
          Unbearable Lightness of being.

oh... Leon & Bladerunner would have to be smuggled in as well 🙂

Timbo, you need to watch the rare 3hour extended version, it's incredibly sad & tragic & true to the book. The Commercial 2 hour version is bordering on soft porn - which doesn't make it a bad film but misses the point of her descent into madness. 😉

          I'll go with directors

          1) Christopher Nolan - Inception, Batman Trilogy, Prestige
          2) Park Chan Wook - Oldboy, Sympathy for Mr/Lady Vengeance, Thirst
          3) Quentin Tarantino - Kill Bill, Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs
          4) Akira Kurosawa - Seven Samurai, Rashomon, Yojimbo, Ran
          5) Hiyao Miyazaki - Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, My Neighbour Totoro

Some good choices in here, although im not a particularly big fan of Nolan's Batman, but The Prestige is excellent. Kurosawa's Ran is a brilliant film, as is pretty much anything from Miyazaki - my fav probably being Nausicaa 🙂

            & almost never disappointed by

            SCORSESE: too many
SPIELBERG: Jaws (!!), ET, Jurassic Park, close encounters, Indy
SERGIO LEONE: Eastwood Trilogy + once upon a time in the west & in america
WES ANDERSON: Life aquatic, Tennenbaums, Mr Fox, Budapest, Moonrise Kingdom..\
JOHN CARPENTER: In the mouth of madness, Big trouble in little China, Escape from NY/LA, The thing, Vampires

& recently have a very good feeling about Denis Villeneuve: Prisoners, Enemy, I hope it keeps on coming.

                Match Point
                Mighty Aphrodite
                Crimes and Misdemeanours (sooo dark)
                Love and Death

                Both pretty mainstream.

Snatch: 55 metacritic rating with 8.6 user score
                LS&2SB: 66 with 8.6 also

Meh, I think Snatch is lacks the freshness and originality of Lock Stock.

Its appeal is somewhat diminished by the precedence of Lock Stock, but that doesnt make it a worse film as such.

Double Indemnity (1944) - Some credit it as the first example of a film noir. Great dialogue. Keep you on edge suspense. Film buffs should not be disappointed in the least bit with this classic.

My father kept going on about how I had to watch it. So, we sat down one day and gave it a go. Going in, I wasn't sure what to expect. Going out, I was delighted to have given it a go. Really is quite a masterpiece, especially of the genre.

Fabregas has blanked in 6 games out of the 19 he's played.

Is he an essential player to have on the WC for his consistency?

Or do you guys think that he would fade off in the second part of the season like he has in previous years?

I would try to fit him for sure. Look at the bonus points he's been getting alone. Coupled with the assists, he doesn't really need to score goals to boost his points, which is good, because he isn't exactly banging them in at a swift rate.

It's a decent question especially with Ddg out of contract soon, it doesn't seem to be beyond the realms of possibility that it could happen whereas Heskey has long left his best days behind him.

It's really not. Maybe DDG will leave. But if Victor Valdes has anything to do with that LvG needs to go to the old folks' home.

Agree but if Ddg wants to go he will regardless of LVG/United board.
United will have no control over him if his contract runs out and they sure don't want to leave him go on a free?
Personally I hope the young starlet stays and gets rewarded with the contract he deserves, Valdes looks like another backwards step if he is a potential replacement.

Ok that sounds better, it looks like Lloris may either end up at Real or united so long term according to reports, a fine stopper no doubt but I'm really starting to like De Gea now.

Is this team good enough to use this week and hold off on my WC until GW 22 or 23 when I know what's happening with Walcott, ADM and Aguero?

        Foster
        Azpi - Clichy - Hutton
        Silva - Hazard - Fabregas - Sanchez - Downing
        Giroud - Austin

Bench - Guzan, Duff, Bartley, Sakho

They are pretty similar but with Walcott back and Welbeck soont to be back too someone is going to sit on the bench. It might just be Giroud.

        Right, thoughts please lads

I think I will put Yaya as 3rd sub, play Boyd and sell Kolarov, here are my reasons

        a) I want ADM in for Yaya but this week is not a great fixture and he may not start (whilst Boyd has a nice fixture)

        b) Kolarov and Mangala seems like too much City defence given the fixtures

        c) Kolarov may not start, and I'd probably say there's a good chance he won't

        d) To sell both needs a hit

Yaya more likely to drop in price imo. Up to you to decide if that affects your WC.
Yes price changes have been really limited so far but I think the long break plays it's part in that too. Yaya / Bony out will be the most popular non-WC transfers out when we get to Thursday/Friday

        Baines Terry Wisdom
        Sanchez Hazard Yaya Silva
        Costa Kane Austin
        Subs- Hamer Boyd Hutton Bartley

Probably. But I'm a bitter Eriksen owner who received only 2pts for Spurs' 5 goals.

I can understand that's very frustrating but Eriksen is a bit inconsistent. He comes good over a period of time. He usually blanks 2 or 3 GW's after scoring. He surprisingly got only 2 assists all season. But him being on set-pieces and the better player, I really want to go for him over Chadli.

If it were me I'd go Chadli for the cash but the problem I have is the 'Hurrikane Kid' he's exceptional value and involved now in everything but would I want a double up of one if the most inconsistent/unpredictable teams in the league- NO.

On a wildcard and going for Foster over Pants,

But seriously... the PPG of Pantimillion is incredible. What on earth goes on with Sunderland keepers, they always make such a ridiculous amount of saves! Guess it can backfire like in that 8-0 drubbing but still...

Panti is by far and away the best value keeper in the game. Think I'm going Panti/Manonne and just playing panti every week. He'll be in the top 3 scoring keepers in FPL come end of the season imo and he missed the first 9 games.

He's 25 points off the top scoring keeper. I think he'd easily have made that 25 pts and some if played the first 9 games.

I've currently got Terry - Haz - Costa but feel the Terry - Haz - Fab camp is the way to go due to the interchangeable cheaper strikers. Plus if Kun breaks down its a move back to Costa potentially and replace JT or Fab.
