With his top scorer Wilfried Bony off to the Africa Cup of Nations with the Ivory Coast, Garry Monk secured the services of Nelson Oliveira on loan from Benfica until the end of the season. Discussing his decision to acquire the 23-year-old, the Swansea manager admitted Oliveira has been on his radar for some time and will offer an alternative to fellow forward Bafetimbi Gomis in the Welsh side’s default 4-2-3-1 formation:

“I’m very happy to have signed him. He’s a very good player. His name came up in the summer, but for whatever reasons that did not happen, but we are delighted to have him here now. I’ve already said we needed someone with Wilfried going away and Nelson gives us another option. We were talking about diversity and different types of strikers and that is what Nelson gives us. He’s different from Wilfried and Bafi too, just as Bafi is different to Wilfried. He gives us options.â€

The History

A prodigious talent, Oliveira worked his way through the youth ranks at Santa Maria and Braga before making his way to Benfica as a 15-year-old back in 2006. Eventually handed his first-team debut in 2009, Oliveira has failed to make an impact at his parent club and has yet to score in 12 appearances for the Portuguese side.

Over the last few seasons, he’s been farmed out on loan with varying degrees of success. Temporary stints in his native country with Rio Ave (12 appearances, no goals) and Pacos Ferreira (31 appearances, five goals) were followed by a season-long spell in Spain with Deportivo La Coruna, where he served up four goals in 31 outings before returning to Benfica. Last year, however, Oliveira started to suggest that, given the pitch time, he could produce, after delivering eight goals and two assists for French outfit Rennes.

On the international stage, Oliveira racked up 26 goals in 70 appearances for Portugal’s youth sides but has found the step up to the senior side far trickier. Handed his debut in 2012, the six-foot-one frontman has netted only once in 14 outings.

The Prospects

Given that Monk tore up a brief flirtation with a 4-4-2 system in pre-season in order to accommodate Gylfi Sigurdsson in the support role behind a lone striker, it seems that, in Bony’s absence, Oliveira faces a direct battle with Gomis for pitch time. With a single league goal to his name in 526 minutes, the latter has struggled to find his feet in the top flight, though two goals and a pair of assists against Tranmere in the cup last weekend suggests that, with a consistency of minutes, he may deliver.

Indeed, despite reports indicating that Gomis could be subject to interest from elsewhere, his manager has insisted he has a major role to play in light of Bony’s departure.

“I can’t control players been linked with other clubs, but Bafi is a Swansea City player. With Wilfried going he is going to be needed, He is a top, top player. It has been difficult to give him game time with Wilfried playing so well, but Bafi has been great about it. He has not said anything and just wants to get on with things. He’s going to play a big part for us now.â€

Unfortunately for Oliveira, Swansea are now set to face West Ham, Chelsea, Southampton and Sunderland in the next four – pitting the Swans against some of the tightest defences in the Premier League. Even if he manages to find a way past Gomis in the starting XI, there are better options for our three-man frontlines in terms of upcoming fixtures.

However, yesterday’s turn of events have put an entirely different slant on our assessment of Swansea’s strikers. With champions Man City seemingly willing to meet Bony’s £30m release clause, the Ivorian could suddenly be out of the picture on a permanent basis. Not only would this leave spot-kick duties up for grabs, it would allow Oliveira and Gomis the chance to stake a claim in our three-man frontlines once the fixtures turn a little kinder.

If Bony leaves – and at the moment it’s all hypothetical – it remains to be seen if either of his fellow forwards can offer us the same sort of security in terms of goal conversion. Our recent Big Numbers article highlighted the fact that Gomis has netted just 3.8% of his chances and if he, or Oliveira, struggle to approach Bony’s 13.6% goal conversion, it could also have a knock-on effect on Sigurdsson’s assist potential – the playmaker will continue to create but needs someone to stick the chances in the back of the net with a degree of regularity.

Whilst Gomis initially seems likely to be handed the chance to impress, Oliveira’s prospects would certainly be handed a major shot in the arm of City do, indeed, acquire Bony. If the Frenchman continues to flounder in front of goal, the loanee could soon be fast-tracked up the pecking order and fire his way into our Fantasy plans. If Bony stays, though, it’s impossible to look past the Ivorian as the man most likely to make a difference for Monk’s side.

Firstly, if he was falsely accused it is highly unlikely he would've been found guilty. Secondly, he hasn't served his time as he has been released on licence.

He was charged on the basis that the woman was too intoxicated to consent. A strange paradigm where she absolved herself of all responsibility because of alcohol. I'd like to see someone do the same when accused of drink driving.

She couldn't remember whether she gave consent. If she gave consent, why is he responsible?

If someone is so intoxicated that they can't make a rational decision about whether you drive their car, should they really be punished?

It's an interesting question, all I ask for is consistency.

she didn't go drink driving, she was sexually assaulted. what does drink driving have to do with anything at all?

Because this case it about whether the woman was ABLE to give consent, not whether she DID. She testified that she couldn't remember if she gave consent. So the crux of it is the fact that whether intoxicated people are responsible for their actions. A bit like John Lockes drunk man analogy.

So, if it was proven that she did consent, Evans would have still been convicted, which IMO is wrong.

She testified that she couldn't remember anything at all from the preceding hour and a quarter before the assault. The words of the appeal court judge:

".... [the complainant] was in no position to form a capacity to consent to sexual intercourse, and you, when you arrived, must have realised that."

That's the law, right or wrong, and frankly I think it's right.

So if we accept that intoxicated people are not in a position to be willing rational agents, you cannot convict any person of any crime if done so while intoxicated.

I'll rephrase your quote so you understand how in a different context, people have a different viewpoint, which is irrational.

"The accused was in no position to form a capacity to decide whether to drive under the influence"

I ask for consistency, which nobody has given me.

"So if we accept that intoxicated people are not in a position to be willing rational agents, you cannot convict any person of any crime if done so while intoxicated."

You're starting from a faulty premis. The law doesn't say that intoxicated people cannot give rational decisions, it states that beyond a certain point of intoxication, someone cannot be considered to have given consent for a sexual act. The point of the law is to stop predatory sex offenders from taking advantage of paralytically drunk people, and as such, I can't understand your problem with it.

Consistency has nothing to do with it - we don't blame people who got drunk and then had horrible things happen to them, we do blame people who gut drunk and did horrible things. Achieving 'consistency' as you put it would obviously lead to a demonstrably worse society, why is consistency worth that? The rules are the rules.

Populist nonsense. Admittedly the case is being reviewed and we'll get the conclusions some time in the autumn. But even if they uphold the conviction, the custodial sentence has been served. The only real question about what jobs he can do are ones concerned with whether or not it puts others at risk and certainly not about whether an Oldham Athletic player upholds high moral standards.

I think this answer suits me
This isn't about rehabilitating an offender by allowing them to participate fully in society.
In many cases there should still be some form of punishment post incarceration wether it be limited mobility or reduction in access to wider society.

If this is the case, it should be made clear in the sentencing. That there is an ongoing punishment of ex-offenders is more to do with societal prejudices (with the rather major caveat that it might be justified in many cases given the general failure of prisons to rehabilitate)

It all comes down to a deeper social issue where these is a growing contempt for men in general in society (which to some degree is understandable due to recent high profile sex offenders etc). If this had been any sort of other crime, even a murder, I guarantee there wouldn't be such an outcry. But this was a crime on a man, done to a women, and that is what is causing the furor. No one is in the position to morally quantity crime and decide which ones are ok for someone getting a certain job and some not just because that crime crime goes against the current trend of mob moral outrage.

People seem to be ignoring the fact that convicted people are entitled to all jobs: for example you cannot get a job in a school if you are a sex offender, or be a member of parliament etc. etc. Society says there are some roles that convicted criminals cannot do. My view is that professional footballers serve a particular purpose as significant role models and therefore convicted sex offenders should not be able to play football...

        He can play football.

Whether its Oldham, Sheffield or whoever eventually he will.

I couldn't care less who he plays for.

Did Lee Hughes not kill someone?

Did Marlon King not sexually assault a woman?

Did Stevie Gerrard not kick the shite out of some DJ?

Did Dave Whelan not induldge in a bit of casual racism?

My point is football isn't full of people of the highest morality yet the media lynch mob are covering Chef Evans next club like a dog on heat.

From what I understand a major issue is that he has admitted no wrong doing and is claiming innocence. He says he was wrongfully imprisoned. Can't forgive him if he isn't remorseful

On post WC, would you spend 1m extra (i.e. Dummet to Evans) to rotate with Zaba?

Or is it too wasteful and too much benching dilemma?

Sterling is very hit and mostly miss at the moment. I would have Chadli double up. Also Boyd is banging them in and now has the fixtures. I feel like your midfield is just a catwalk model kind of thing and your strikers aren't strong enough. There are better keeper rotations. Check articles for better rotation.

weak wc team in my opinion.

Could I have some opinions on my wildcard idea please? I'm thinking of using it now, even though I have two full times, because I can't afford any price rises. I need to pick up my form as my lacklustre FPL efforts (I concentrate on Sky, the Mirror and Telegraph) have left me over 40 points behind my increasingly boastful best friend. This is my draft:

    Heaton, Pantilimon,
Terry, Wisdom, Trippier (for Hutton in 4 weeks), Bertrand, Debuchy
    Sig, Sanchez, Hazard, Chadli, Silva,
    Costa, Kane, Berahino -

Then Costa and Silva for Fab and Aguero when Kun is fit.

Squad strength is favoured in readiness for the DGWs.

Oh my I'm tempted to go Sess as my 2 week punt rather than Ings.

I was planning to do Downing -> Sessegnon as well, but then just decided to play Boyd this week.

Been playing 3-5-2 these past weeks so don't have him. Probably the week to start Boyd imo

Bony -> Ings is the obvious choice for me and bench Downing.

        But Sess though.. 😉

One player you'd like to see in your team from your rival club?
For me, it is Christian Eriksen at Arsenal.

Unrelated gaming enquiry.... Bare with me I´m old.

I more or less stopped gaming after the Amiga went out the window. But I did very much enjoy Halo 3 and Bio something on the 360.... So I´m not used to all these buttons just yet, but now I´ve bought:
    Fear 3
    Resistance fall of man.
    Resident evil 6
Assassins creed 3, which seems too complicated but what do I know.

Which do you recommend to start with?

Fall of Man is the only one I've played, but it was good then. Although it's 10 years old now.

Ass creed 3 is one of the worst of the series. Should try from the beginning. The story is worth it.

      FIFA for me 😀

      Last of Us
      Tomb Rider
Dragon Age: Inquisition is a new one

Okidoki, well I´ll try resistance then..... I just hate all the freakin buttons but maybe that is pretty straight forward like aim and fire

How are you going to get Aguero in? Also you're going to have a constant benching headache with those front 8.

      I'd swap Downing for Boyd
