Sergio Aguero could be back in full training by the end of the week and may make City’s bench at Goodison. Vincent Kompany and Edin Dzeko could also be in contention, according to the local press. Theo Walcott is keen to court caution with his fitness, Sadio Mane could yet feature for Senegal in the African Cup of Nations, whilst Stoke strengthen their defence with the acqusition of Leverkusen centre-half Philipp Wollscheid.

AGUERO AHEAD OF SCHEDULE

Reports in the Manchester Evening News suggest that Sergio Aguero could be fit enough to make the bench for his side’s encounter with Everton this weekend, despite initial reports asserting that the Argentine wouldn’t be ready to return until the end of the month.

The Scout Says: It’s the news that we have all been waiting for, but most will still be looking for further confirmation before chasing after the Man City striker. Nonetheless, Aguero has featured as a substitute twice this season, and scored both times, suggesting that even a cameo role on Saturday could deliver the points for those willing to gamble on his fitness. A Goodison comeback would surely see a considerable spike in Wildcards next week, with managers likely to be scrambling to free up the funds to acquire the 12.3-rated forward’s services. With the same newspaper also reporting that Vincent Kompany and Edin Dzeko will be in contention to face the Toffees, Manuel Pellegrini’s squad will potentially be one Ivorian away from full strength – with Arsenal and Chelsea their next two opponents after Saturday, that couldn’t be more timely. The Stevan Jovetic bandwagon, meanwhile, could be derailed already thanks to Aguero and Dzeko’s possible returns; the Montenegrin has already earned over 16,000 new patrons thanks to his 11-point haul on New Year’s Day, but could now be subject to rotation with other strikers available for Pellegrini.

WALCOTT WON’T PUSH HIMSELF

Arsenal’s Theo Walcott has stated that he is happy with a cautious approach to his return to fitness after recently recovering from a groin injury that had kept him sidelined since November:

“I like to work week by week, so I forget about the big picture and the nine months (out). Week by week, hitting the goals and when you have achieved that, you can feel good about hitting something else. You want to come in (to training) and feel like you’re doing something each day. Even though it might be the same things at the start, you benefit when it comes to the end of it.”

The Scout Says: It would seem that Fantasy managers will have to wait a little while longer, then, before they can seriously consider Walcott as a differential option in midfield. If the 8.9-priced winger were fully fit, he’d surely be quick to say, and thus Arsene Wenger will likely remain cautious with his pitch time in the coming weeks. This news only strengthens Alexis Sanchez’s claim as the number one option in the Gunners’ ranks right now, and with three plum home fixtures in his next five (STK, AVL, LEI), the Chilean could be set to bring his two-match points drought to an end with a considerable bang. Santi Cazorla, with four goals and an assist in the last six, though, must also come into consideration, given that only 3% of managers have snapped up his services.

MANE’S AFRICA CUP DREAM STILL ALIVE

Reports yesterday revealed that Saido Mane could yet feature in the Africa Cup of Nations (ACoN) after making a quicker-than-expected recovery from the calf injury he suffered in Southampton’s New Year’s Day victory over Arsenal.

The Scout Says: The Saints originally ruled Mane out for four to six weeks, with Ronald Koeman claiming that the winger would miss the ACoN but, having been selected in the Senegal squad for the tournament, Mane could still feature if he can prove his fitness to their doctors. Should Senegal make it to the final of the competition, the Saints midfielder could now be unavailable until Gameweek 26, leaving Koeman with a hole to fill for five fixtures. With three goals and an assist in his last three league outings, Mane’s presence will undoubtedly be missed by the south coast outfit, though his absence will allow one of Shane Long or new boy Eljero Elia the chance to prove themselves on the flank, potentially putting Mane’s starting role under threat once he returns to domestic action as a result.

WOLLSCHEID JOINS STOKE

Stoke have confirmed the signing of centre-half Philipp Wollscheid on loan from Bayer Leverkusen. After the announcement, Mark Hughes spoke of the German’s prospects:

“Philipp is a player we’ve been aware of and have been tracking for some time and he will add to the competition for places in the centre of our defence. He’s got presence, technically he is good, he has played at a high level and he has gone for big money in the past and to get a German international at relatively young age is a good deal for the club. He’s genuinely excited about the prospect of playing in the Premier League and is confident of making a big impression as a Stoke player.”

The Scout Says: ‘Competition’: the word that strikes fear into Fantasy managers’ hearts. Judging by Hughes’ statement, it seems unlikely that Wollscheid will come straight into his first XI plans, though he will surely put pressure on the starting berth of Marc Muniesa, who has started the last four in the centre of defence alongside Ryan Shawcross. With the Potters conceding just once in their last three league displays and offering a decent schedule from Gameweek 22 onwards (QPR, new, MCI, avl, HUL), interest in their rearguard assets has been on the rise. With Wollscheid now in the mix for pitch time, however, the budget appeal of Muniesa looks to have taken a hit, leaving Geoff Cameron (4.2), Erik Pieters (4.6) and Ryan Shawcross (5.4) as the viable picks in the Potters’ backline.

SANDRO CLOSE TO COMEBACK

QPR’s Sandro is optimistic over making a return to full training in a “couple of weeks” after stepping up his recovery from a knee injury he suffered back in November.

The Scout Says: Unmistakeably a favourite of Harry Redknapp’s, Sandro will be confident of earning minutes once he is fully back in the frame, with his presence in front of a back four likely to prove beneficial to a side who continue to struggle defensively. Nonetheless, it’s worth noting that the Hoops have won just one of the seven games the Brazilian has started this season, suggesting a starting berth may not be so easy to come by, with Karl Henry proving a more reliable partner for Joey Barton in the centre of the park. Leroy Fer, at 5.6, remains the stand-out option in the R’s midfield, having produced three goals and an assist in his last eight appearances.

Downgrade Debuchy to a cheaper defender, upgrade Alde to Bertrand/Clyne.

Other then that looks good, although not too sure about the Spurs double up.

why? chadli has insane PPM and Kane is a template pick.

Not sure about Debuchy, Arsenal are very inconsistent with clean sheets. He doesn't offer much going forward either.

Because Spurs are one of the most inconsistent teams in the BPL, I wouldn't be persuaded by one five goal performance to double up on their attack.

Arsenal tighten up in the second half almost every season. Debuchy's attacking potential aswell makes him an absolute steal for 5.2 imo.

We know they are inconsistent but so what? For every bad game there is a good game or two and these two guys are excellent value.

Agree. I´m bringing in Debuchy on my WC as well, and will probably play him every week, thus riding the inconsistency rollercoaster for some time.

Theres always people that say that, but it is not always true. The main reason why I was telling you to downgrade Debuchy is so you can afford one of Bert/Clyne instead of Alde, as they earn bonus and offer a lot more attacking threat for only 0.7 extra.

There are way too many good budget defenders around for Debuchy to be considered a decent option.

So what? If they have a bad game (like they often do) you will have two players that have blanked as opposed to one.

i dont think it is worth the 0.7 extra. Could be wrong though.

And then when spurs score..they make up for the blank..dont see the issue.

Bonus points, attacking threat and possible OOP (with Bertrand) is well worth the 0.7m.

Spurs scoring say, one or two goals in a match (with no guarantee that both of your spurs players are involved) does not make up for two blanks, no.

              He doesn't, imo.

Not only from watching Arsenal games, but also looking at his attacking returns.

1 assist (when Arsenal were pushing for a winner late on against Palace, with all players scrambling in the box) from a saved shot and 1 goal doesn't convince me.

Hutton and Wisdom are too way better options, imo.

I have watched him mate, and he is no different to the average fullback (attacking wise).

You obviously seem keen on him though, so go for him, I'm just saying that with so many better budget options around downgrading him (to upgrade Alde) makes sense.

Is Hazard essential in every Fantasy game at the moment? My answer would normally and probably is yes..

I'm trying to prepare my Ultimate FPL team for the rest of the season (No transfers after Jan) and have already had Sanchez, Fabregas, Di Maria all season alongside Lamela, Henderson, Siggy, Boyd, Wanyama.. Considering downgrading a striker for Lamela -> Hazard but just wondering if that would be overkill on premium midfielders.. I want/need Hazard but don't like the look of getting rid of any of the other premiums either.

    Any thoughts?

Why would you want to bring in Aguero for Arsenal (h) and Chelsea (a). He is VERY unlikely to outscore other options in those two games. He may well not start against Arsenal and City could easily blank at Stamford Bridge in what is likely to be a low scoring game.

February (GW24) is plenty early enough to bring Aguero in (if you want to).

I would like to structure it so that I still have Costa as a place holder for Sturridge. So a WC is needed to do that.

        Save transfer this week then:
        Costa > Aguero
Silva > Hazard or Fab (whichever one you don't have)

No need when Chelsea away is one of the games, IMO. I'd only do so if he was going to rise in price beyond my reach.

Looks good. I'd be tempted, now winter rotation is over, to go Azpi instead of Cahill though.

Also, I'm not keen on Trippier to be honest. I'd prefer a West Brom defender.

Thanks - I had Azpi and got fed up with him missing random matches...Cahill always seems to play and can't quite afford Terry. Trippier is fairly short term with the option to switch to West Brom defender once it's clear whether Wisdom is a certain starter

What are people's thoughts on Rooney? I've had him for a while now and he hasn't disappointed although he does suffer when dropped deep in midfield... and all reports are that he might spend more time there now that Adm is back up and running?

Worth shifting for Agueo eventually consideknf I have Costa or should the Chelsea man get the bump?

I've had him since Costa got suspended and can't wait to get rid of him tbh. Unless he plays in the hole he just doesn't get enough opportunities to justify the price.

I'd keep Costa unless you want to bring in Fab as a Chelski replacement. Rooney will do well over the season, but will lag behind Costa, Aguero, Sturridge and perhaps a couple of the cheaper options. I think he will be a frustrating pick.

I'm wildcarding as late as possible but would like to hear some thoughts on this team I currently have on my mind:

    Heaton/Pantilimon
Terry, Bertrand, Hutton, Wisdom, van Aanholt
Sánchez, Hazard, Di Maria, Eriksen, Sigurdsson
    Agüero, Kane, Naismith

0.5 in the bank, could be used to upgrade Wisdom to Lescott or Eriksen to Sterling (0.4 short of Walcott sadly). Any suggestions?

      • 12 Years
      11 years, 24 days ago

How about Alderweirald instead of Bertrand to afford Walcott?

I'm also not convinced Heaton is worth a spot in there. Burnley have horrible fixtures for a while soon, so that's just money wasted.

      1. caio89
        • 12 Years
        11 years, 24 days ago

Had Alderweireld earlier in the season and he did fine, however doesn't have as much goal threat and doesn't get as many bonus points as Bertrand so I think Bertrand is worth the extra money.

It's a bit like the Whoscored ratings. The top defenders are usually the awful ones as they usually make lots of blocks that are merely them making last ditch challenges as a result of being woefully positioned.

Look at Pantilimon and Heaton's rotation:

QPR, CPL, BUR, WBA, QPR, WBA, SWA, hul, AVL, whm, NEW, CPL, eve, LEI, SOT, hul, LEI, avl

(shamelessly copied from this great piece of writing: http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2014/12/31/january-wildcard-cheap-goalkeepers-rotation/ )

        1. Wilshere Knowledge
          • 12 Years
          11 years, 24 days ago

But after GW24, they have Man U, Chelsea, Swansea, Pool, City, Saints, Spurs, Arsenal, Everton.

Is it really worth spending an extra 0.5, 0.6m for that?

Panti got 4 points against Man City remember.

If, like you say, you are wildcarding late, you will miss Burnley's good fixtures and just be left with those stinkers.

Could I have some opinions on my wildcard idea please? I'm thinking of using it now, even though I have two full times, because I can't afford any price rises. This is my draft:

    Heaton, Pantilimon,
Terry, Wisdom, Trippier (for Hutton in 4 weeks), Bertrand, Debuchy
    Sig, Sanchez, Hazard, Chadli, Silva,
    Costa, Kane, Berahino -

Then Costa and Silva for Fab and Aguero when Kun is fit.

Squad strength is favoured in readiness for the DGWs.

Ward-Prowse seems like the only significant risk but has three scores 6 or over in his last five since returning and only easier fixtures to come...

      The first one, easily.

Silva has lost all appeal when City have an out-an-out striker, United fixtures are very good.

Assuming Wasi will warm the bench most weeks, the first is the obvious option imo.

    Aguero/ Austin/ Kane

Trippier is an iffy one for me. Pieters a better shout?

I am bringing in Costa for the Toon H game

Thing is I must get rid of Azpil due to already having Haz & JT

So it means I hav 5.9 for a defender, i am thinking Jones or Vertongen as a bit of a differential

    Thoughts plz??
