Our Sunday delve into the members data arrives once again this evening. We cast an analytical eye over Tottenham’s goalscoring playmaker, Palace’s in-form frontman and the Magpies’ flourishing Frenchman, whilst the worrying form of Villa’s misfiring target man and United’s skipper give cause for concern.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Not wildcarding until next gameweek, but which of these players would you lose? I have put * next to suggested.

    Fabianski*, Pantilimon
    Baines*, Bertrand, Terry*, Wisdom, Hutton
    Sterling*, Sanchez, Hazard, Downing*, Marney*
    Costa, Kane, Austin*

    Bottomed out:

Tinkering with potential WC teams, despite not having necessarily decided to push the button this week.

    Panti - 4mil
    Terry - Fonte - Jones - Bellerin - Wisdom
    Sanchez - Fabregas - Hazard - Cazorla - Boyd
    Aguero - Kane - Austin

    0.6 itb

    Options include:
    A) Upgrading 2nd keeper to Krul or Heaton
    B) Bellerin + Boyd -> Pva + Puncheon (5th mid)

Also still debating the 4th mid position (held by Caz in the above draft)

    Any thoughts/comments/suggestions lads?

          Agreed. Other two more essential.

ADM is a world class player but who knows what team LVG will put out and in what formation? At RM under Mourinho, ADM knew exactly what he was doing. At Utd. under LVG I don't think any of them do to be honest.

On value (Pts/ £1m) the top 10 players after 22 games consist of:

            3 x GKs
            5 x Defenders
            1 x Midfielder
            1 x Striker

The 5 Defenders are all premium ones: Bertrand, Clyne, Terry, Fonte, Ivanovic.

I'd say that if you are looking for bang for your buck it would therefore make sense to have one or two premium defenders. Especially if you already have bought one or more of the above at a cheaper price.

The GKS are (or were) cheaper options: Heaton, Guzan, Forster. This suggests that a cheaper GK and his sub or a cheap rotation offers best value.

The Mid is Downing, a mid-price option. In fact there are no premium mids in the top 30 on value (where you will also find Sigurdsson, Chadli, Henderson and Larsson).

The Forward is Austin and all of the forwards in the top 30 are also cheapies: Berahino, Kane, Ings and Naismith are among them.

Obviously value (pts/£1m) isn't everything, you also need 2 or 3 players you will be happy to captain. For those you are probably looking at players like Sanchez, Costa, Hazard and Aguero because points/game is the issue for potential captains, not points/£1m.

To my mind if you use these two measures as a starting point it gives a different perspective on wildcard squad selection. Of course the trick will be to predict which players/teams will improve on their performances in the first half of the season, which stay the same and which decline. But the balance of the evidence so far this season says that a cheap, cheap, cheap defence isn't necessarily the most effective way to go.

you should add games played when calculating like this. for example, kane better value than austin. panti in goal.

If I wanted to make a case for a specific player then yes.

I was only looking at the balance of investment/value in different categories of player.

You can't expect me to do all your work for you. 😉

Yes but the problem with the analysis, is that it favours defenders, in particularly premium defenders. Explained below.

            2. Carlos Kickaball
              • 11 Years
              10 years, 11 months ago

Be careful Ruth, your analysis here contains a rather large flaw.

That is that it is no surprise that defenders are the best value, they always are, as they are priced cheaper in comparison to other players, and base price defenders are cheaper than base price forwards and midfielders.

You could spend 3.0-3.2m on Ivanović over a cheap playing defender, but it could still be better spent upgrading your front 8, or spent around your team.

It's also worth noting that some of the best value cheap defenders lose out in these calculations, because if they have played consistently like Wisdom they will have risen in price and you will be calculating their value based on their buy price, rather than their selling price, for a sale price of 4.2m on Widom, he is better value than Ivanović, despite not even having played yet this game week, and Ivanović getting 10 points!

If a cheap defender has not played consistently and are returning to the team they are cut price bargains like Van Aanholt, and they completely miss out on your value calculation due to absence.

              1. Carlos Kickaball
                • 11 Years
                10 years, 11 months ago

Oh also you're short changing cheap defenders here, because you fail to consider the positive impact rotation has.

Southampton and Chelsea players will hardly benefit from being rotated with the many cheap options we have.

Add to this that Southampton and Chelsea are teams that you may want multiple players from, so it is an additional cost in losing a slot. If you get Ivanović it could easily block you from owning a different third Chelsea player.

Not for me. Sanchez, Aguero and probably Kane yes... I think they're going to be key players. But I don't think any one defender is essential, you just need a rotation that works. And last week was Costa's first major haul for weeks. I'm starting to take him more seriously but he'll need to keep this form up to be worth his price IMO. Hazard can be a very useful player, I have him myself; but sometimes I question his consistency too.

He's certainly improved a lot in the past couple of games. But we are missing a dependable striker to put away the chances that he and others create. Ayoze is an amazing talent, but he's been used as a lone striker all too often, when that is just not his game.

Unless Cabella himself starts knocking them in, I don't think he's worth it atm, despite good real life form.

He's playing well, but is at an awkward price range - not cheap enough for the amount of risk he currently presents.

So only two places left in my WC team which is for two mid priced midfielders.

12.5 to spend - currently got Siggy @ 6.4 and Downing @ 6.3 so too expensive to retain.

    Options:

    A) Downing with Henderson, Johnson, Puncheon or Elia
    B) Sigurdsson with Henderson, Johnson, Puncheon or Elia
    C) Chadli with Puncheon or Elia
    D) Henderson with Chadli, Johnson, Puncheon or Elia
    E) Johnson with Chadli, Puncheon or Elia
    F) Puncheon with Mirallas or Elia
    G) Mirallas with Elia

Puncheon and Johnson look good to me if you already have Kane, so E).

Elia is a bit of a stab in the dark at the moment, he certainly hasn't been a prolific scorer in his career but he is talented (Dutch international) and maybe Koeman is playing him further forward than has been the case in the past.

Can afford tonight's drop as have 0.9 between bought and sell but fixing after that, he's a creative player but no real striker ahead of him is worrying me

I've been through hell and back with Siggy, but I feel it's finally time to cut lose.
I've kept since Gw1 fwiw, but better players have arisen, and the Swans w/o Bony are dire.
That couples with the donkey that is Gomis, and Ki out, has been detrimental to their season

Good point. I've had him since GW1 too that's why I'm reluctant to sell.

          Sell mate, cut lose.
He'll drop even more if/when he blanks at the Saints
You might be able to buy back at 6.4 even in due time

    On WC, which is better?

    A) Bellerin, Siggy and Costa

    B) Clyne, Fabregas and Austin

Issue with A is Bellerin isn't nailed, though it would be ideal to have Costa

what else should I be looking at?

    Panty - Krul
    Terry - Bertrand - Bellerin - Hutton - Baird
    Sanchez - Hazard - Silva - Elia - Boyd
    Aguero - Costa - Kane

    WC, 0.3m itb

not sure if I'm keeping Elia but was selling Downing anyways and thought I could potentially cash in on some rises

Look at whether or not Baird keeps his place, and more importantly, whether Pulis brings in a left back in the next couple of weeks. Prefer Puncheon to Elia, but it's a solid team structure.

Am looking for thoughts on ADM. How did he look? What was his position. Set piece? Is he worth it/ did he look threatening in the end..

I wild carded him in because I feel he may heat up and also because I like United fixtures but am left feeling disappointed.
