As the dust was settling on a hectic, and at times bizarre opening weekend, it was time to pick through the scores, stats and highlights and scout out some more alternative options for this week’s ‘Differentials’. With dozens of new faces amongst the starting line-ups last weekend there were plenty to choose from, but in the end we settled on our final three. After last week’s ‘Differentials’ nearly outscored my entire FPL team, I’m hoping for another bumper week….

Russell Martin

Norwich skipper Russell Martin gets the first slot in this evening’s line-up. Coming in at 4.5 in FPL, he’s pricier than any other Canaries first-team defender and has suffered from investment as a consequence- while 4.0 Ritchie de Laet is owned by 110,223 Fantasy managers at the time of writing, Martin has been snapped up by just 5,553, which equates to 0.002%.

The club’s first home game of the season sees Stoke arrive at Carrow Road this Sunday and while the likes of De Laet and Zak Whitbread are kinder on the budget, Martin offers the greater potential. His raids down the right saw the full-back score 5 goals and picked up 2 assists for Paul Lambert’s side in the Championship last season; even if the home side concede, then, Martin’s attacking tendencies shows more promise at the other end of the pitch than the rest of the Norwich back-four.

Yohan Cabaye

Despite missing most of the pre-season, Yohan Cabaye impressed on his debut against Arsenal last weekend, and looks set to retain his starting spot for Newcastle’s tie against bitter rivals Sunderland. Without last season’s top scorer Kevin Nolan, Newcastle will be looking to Cabaye to provide a creative threat from midfield, and despite a dull game last week, Cabaye showed signs that he could become a key fantasy target over the season.

At Lille, Cabaye played a central playmaker role while also taking free kicks and penalties, and in the 09/10 season, he picked up 15 goals and 10 assists for his efforts. If he can produce anywhere near those sort of returns at Newcastle this season, then he will be excellent value at 6.0m, and his current ownership of just 0.9% will surely shoot up. It will be interesting to see if he takes on the majority of set pieces going forwards – Last weekend he shared free kicks with Joey Barton, so the jury is still out on that one.

Danny Graham

Any striker moving up to the Premier League from the Championship will find it much tougher to score, and as expected, Danny Graham struggled to get involved in Mondays game against Man City. As the central point of Swansea’s 4-2-3-1 system, Graham will get plenty of chances to score in easier fixtures, and he certainly knows how to put them away – he was the Championship’s top scorer last season with 24 goals, and also picked up 11 assists.

At 5.0m, Graham should slot into most fantasy sides very comfortably alongside a couple of big name strikers and with three home games in the next four against Wigan, Sunderland and West Brom, Graham should prove to be great value for the 2.2% of managers that have invested so far.

I'm going to sound like a broken record, but I think Saha is a greta alternative for Suarez.

Much better fixtures, and the extra 2mil could really help your midfield.

Defense looks excellent - and with Rooney and Torres you know you can bring in any striker who looks like getting red hot with just one transfer.

Sounds like Mata's going to Chelsea, even the likes of Sid Lowe are on it.

If he does move, where do you see him playing, behind the striker or on the left wing?

Maybe cut in to Malouda's appearances?

Either way, the boy's got some skills:

If Sturridge really does become a first-teamer, then he'll be an absolute bargain!

He'll almost never get you a goal or assist, so you are relying on any potential BPs (that are very uncertain right now) and single clean sheet points.

Plus the difficulties hye's facing at the moment with his dad.

I think there are much better players out there for a similar value (Hoolahan, Moses, Jarvis, Brunt, Sinclair,...).

I did Rooney to Bent so hoping I wont regret it - He got me nice points last week and has got the eye of the tiger back, but I'm gonna give Bent a run this week - was think of giving him the armband but its currently on Torres - could change before 1130 like a lot of things though. Probably do a whiskey decision later, captain Given because he's Irish and sleep in until 1pm lol.

he looked very assured mon night. Good pedigree. The only reason i havent kept him is because i am unsure if he is nailed on. WIth Williams, Tate (who also looked good) and club captain Monk i couldn't take the risk). That also influenced my decision to have Vorm n Ruddy!

Also-I can't believe how rude posters can be, if you feel the advice someone has offered is rubbish - then discuss - dont ridicule. This is my second season on this site - last year the advice and support offered helped me win my mini league by 100 points - this year i'm not sure i can be bothered with the rude behavior of some posters spoiling it for others- i used to enjoy the banter - even if i only watched from the sidelines, but now i dare not respond to posts for fear of ridicule or worse - criticised for poor spelling/grammer/punctuation! moan over- who'll RMT now!! 🙂

Half of me feels like saying I wholeheartedly agree and then the other half of me realises I'm probably guilty on occassion of what you're pointing out.

A thinker though. Good on ya.

I'll RMT you. First-time poster. You seem like a fairly inclusive guy so here's me:

      Given
      Huth-J Enrique-Kompany-Hangeland
      Downing-Young-Moses
      Suarez-Rooney-Bent

Got nailed by the site-crash last week. This is the team I would select long-term if I couldn't touch it again for the season. But how would you guys tinker to maximise the coming weeks?

I made the same choice because i don't like man city fixtures and with tevez return, nasri coming, its hard to take a choice between aguero, silva, yaya...
So i took cahill instead of silva or yaya, and took torres over aguero for the fixtures.

It is torturing me, because last week I made a long term team and i just fucked up (41 points) so I am changing everything but I think I ll be in the shit cause I will need to change :

      hilario to given
      cahill to silva/yaya/vdv/young/malouda
      torres to aguero
      baines to cashley/kompany

So I already know i want to make 4 changes as soon as possible. I could let cahill and/or Baines for 4 matchs, torres i would like to change him in 2 matchs, and hilario in 3 or 4.

So next week no change, in 2 weeks torres to aguero and baines or cahill to cashley/kompany or silva/yaya etc.. and in 3 weeks hilario to given, and last but not least i will swap baines or cahill depending on my choice on 3rd week.

Ok then it's possible even if a bad rooney or suarez or a big bargain comes up it will ruin my plans and I ll have to keep cahill or baines who are very expensive if they don't give good returns.

I am sorry as I am not sure to receive an aswer I am answering my qestions and the question above.

Would like not to make a drunk choice tonight.

      Thanks lads

This suggestion of Graham is tempting. Is it worth bringing him in in place of Holt? The additional .5m will also be of use.

next three out of four games at home against weak to average teams means if he doesnt produce in those he probably never will.

The spot the differentials last season quite often found a good player, so I've gone with Graham, as u say the extra 0.5m will help.

Keepers are very weak so might struggle there.
Boswinga and Evans, not sure how long they will be playing for, and I'd stay away from the man u defence anyway.
DO you need both Lampard and Torres, that's a lot of money on two chelsea playes!
And the captain, I would back Lamps over baines.

Actually not bad if you plan on WC GW 4.

I had this starting 11 earlier which would ONLY BE for GW 2 and GW3 and then Wildcard for GW 4. 10 of 11 at home both weeks -

        Hilario (Vorm)

Warnock - Jagielka - Evans (De Laet, Enrique)

Lampard - NZogbia - Moses - Sinclair (Ferguson)

        Bent - Rooney - Torres

I am going for just Baines but Cole too is a decent setup, but a bit limiting from a budget pov.

None. Why Cole when you can have B'swinger?

Baines: unknown with Arteta back on set plays.

if he starts. If i knew he was id go for both arteta and baines. Arteta is a steal at 8m. He would have got over the contract hangover by now

Yep, Baines is a player I'd probably like but his price is a killer at this moment in time when my priority is loading up the front 3.

i had bent, suarez n torress but thought better of bent. Replaced him with a penalty taker and got nzog and saved 1.5m. I am very unsure of attacking capabilities of Villa. Where is bents service going to come from on a regular basis?

I am seriously considering captaining Baines tomorrow. I have never captained a defender. It seems wrong.

Anybody thinking of doing the same?

My concern is that Arteta nicks penalties and some set pieces from him. Otherwise I see him as a good 8.0 midfielder with 4 point s bonus.
