As the dust was settling on a hectic, and at times bizarre opening weekend, it was time to pick through the scores, stats and highlights and scout out some more alternative options for this week’s ‘Differentials’. With dozens of new faces amongst the starting line-ups last weekend there were plenty to choose from, but in the end we settled on our final three. After last week’s ‘Differentials’ nearly outscored my entire FPL team, I’m hoping for another bumper week….

Russell Martin

Norwich skipper Russell Martin gets the first slot in this evening’s line-up. Coming in at 4.5 in FPL, he’s pricier than any other Canaries first-team defender and has suffered from investment as a consequence- while 4.0 Ritchie de Laet is owned by 110,223 Fantasy managers at the time of writing, Martin has been snapped up by just 5,553, which equates to 0.002%.

The club’s first home game of the season sees Stoke arrive at Carrow Road this Sunday and while the likes of De Laet and Zak Whitbread are kinder on the budget, Martin offers the greater potential. His raids down the right saw the full-back score 5 goals and picked up 2 assists for Paul Lambert’s side in the Championship last season; even if the home side concede, then, Martin’s attacking tendencies shows more promise at the other end of the pitch than the rest of the Norwich back-four.

Yohan Cabaye

Despite missing most of the pre-season, Yohan Cabaye impressed on his debut against Arsenal last weekend, and looks set to retain his starting spot for Newcastle’s tie against bitter rivals Sunderland. Without last season’s top scorer Kevin Nolan, Newcastle will be looking to Cabaye to provide a creative threat from midfield, and despite a dull game last week, Cabaye showed signs that he could become a key fantasy target over the season.

At Lille, Cabaye played a central playmaker role while also taking free kicks and penalties, and in the 09/10 season, he picked up 15 goals and 10 assists for his efforts. If he can produce anywhere near those sort of returns at Newcastle this season, then he will be excellent value at 6.0m, and his current ownership of just 0.9% will surely shoot up. It will be interesting to see if he takes on the majority of set pieces going forwards – Last weekend he shared free kicks with Joey Barton, so the jury is still out on that one.

Danny Graham

Any striker moving up to the Premier League from the Championship will find it much tougher to score, and as expected, Danny Graham struggled to get involved in Mondays game against Man City. As the central point of Swansea’s 4-2-3-1 system, Graham will get plenty of chances to score in easier fixtures, and he certainly knows how to put them away – he was the Championship’s top scorer last season with 24 goals, and also picked up 11 assists.

At 5.0m, Graham should slot into most fantasy sides very comfortably alongside a couple of big name strikers and with three home games in the next four against Wigan, Sunderland and West Brom, Graham should prove to be great value for the 2.2% of managers that have invested so far.

    A) Nani + Saha + 1.0 in the bank
    B) Sessegnon + Rooney.

My team is set. Captaincy still in debate. I think it has to be Rooney. We know what he's capable of, he's up against a tired Tottenham team without a string of first team players.

Torres is the scout's choice, but against a disciplined West Brom team, and the fact he just didn't look like scoring last week, means he's still too much of a punt for the armband. If he scores this week, then the armband's his against Norwich.

      Any advice here:

        I like Rooney.

Go A. Sessegnon could do great too. If you need the funds though, don't hesitate to go for Sinclair, Brunt or Jarvis at 6.0.

I like Rooney aswell. It's just im not too keen on the 3 big strikers. (Already have Bent and Torres +1m to get Rooney/RVP later) Reason being, when tottenham and Arsenal's fixtures ease up i want an easy Route to VDV or Walcott. Think im going to go with B. Nani and Rooney basically play the same role anyway.

I think Bent being at 10m is easier and better in a way, than if he was 8M for example. With the current Villa fixtures, and comparing it to Liverpool's i fancy Bent to score more than either Carroll or Suarez in the next two games.

After that i can straight swap him out easily for Suarez/Carroll, when it would've been harder if he cost less as i may of needed to use two transfers.

I'm still in doubt between Nani and Young, and I might be tempted to go for Yaya, Moses and Suarez instead of Silva, Jarvis and Zamora. But I think this one is good, when you look at the fixtures. I think that I can bring Aguero and Suarez in later, for Torres and Bent.

      Rooney AND Torres.

If you can't do both then, against the grain of this site perhaps, Rooney.

Trying to do both but I can only do it at the risk of losing A.Cole

Maybe that's the way to go. I don't have Cole or Baines.

Really, though, both strategies are fine.

want to go 3-4-3 so would bench Moses, De Laet and Simpson

could pay well to have both if Swansea have a good day tomorrow

Bout 1.4 millionth. Good I know.

Not sure which way I'm going yet. Pretty worried about not going with Aguero, as he could pretty much tear the backside out of any team when he's on form.

Pretty happy with my team though. Going with a pretty low maintenance side that will be good for the next two weeks as I'm moving next weekend - lock stock down to London - and need a pretty easy team to manage. So it's looking like plenty of Chelsea, Villa, Everton and Utd at the minute.

decided against aguero till next home match. agree with che/vill/eve although not managed to get utd coverage.all my team seem to be nailed on, just a pain when the bench scores more!
            hope the move goes well.

Yet again, the Larsson vs Sessegnon debate rears its ugly head.

On one hand, as everyone is quick to point out, Sessegnon is OOP and in good form. I was wondering though, how OOP actually is he? Did anyone see the game and can comment? His chalkboard for passing looks farly CM. CAM to be fair, but still. And all the while Larsson is banging corners into the box... I'm struggling here.

Bloody hell, my team was set, but now I've started looking at it again I can't decide between Nani, Young and Malouda!

Damn these unlimited transfers; they sap your brain, they sap your time, they sap your bloody will to live!
