Spot the Differential

As the dust was settling on a hectic, and at times bizarre opening weekend, it was time to pick through the scores, stats and highlights and scout out some more alternative options for this week’s ‘Differentials’. With dozens of new faces amongst the starting line-ups last weekend there were plenty to choose from, but in the end we settled on our final three. After last week’s ‘Differentials’ nearly outscored my entire FPL team, I’m hoping for another bumper week….

Russell Martin

Norwich skipper Russell Martin gets the first slot in this evening’s line-up. Coming in at 4.5 in FPL, he’s pricier than any other Canaries first-team defender and has suffered from investment as a consequence- while 4.0 Ritchie de Laet is owned by 110,223 Fantasy managers at the time of writing, Martin has been snapped up by just 5,553, which equates to 0.002%.

The club’s first home game of the season sees Stoke arrive at Carrow Road this Sunday and while the likes of De Laet and Zak Whitbread are kinder on the budget, Martin offers the greater potential. His raids down the right saw the full-back score 5 goals and picked up 2 assists for Paul Lambert’s side in the Championship last season; even if the home side concede, then, Martin’s attacking tendencies shows more promise at the other end of the pitch than the rest of the Norwich back-four.

Yohan Cabaye

Despite missing most of the pre-season, Yohan Cabaye impressed on his debut against Arsenal last weekend, and looks set to retain his starting spot for Newcastle’s tie against bitter rivals Sunderland. Without last season’s top scorer Kevin Nolan, Newcastle will be looking to Cabaye to provide a creative threat from midfield, and despite a dull game last week, Cabaye showed signs that he could become a key fantasy target over the season.

At Lille, Cabaye played a central playmaker role while also taking free kicks and penalties, and in the 09/10 season, he picked up 15 goals and 10 assists for his efforts. If he can produce anywhere near those sort of returns at Newcastle this season, then he will be excellent value at 6.0m, and his current ownership of just 0.9% will surely shoot up. It will be interesting to see if he takes on the majority of set pieces going forwards – Last weekend he shared free kicks with Joey Barton, so the jury is still out on that one.

Danny Graham

Any striker moving up to the Premier League from the Championship will find it much tougher to score, and as expected, Danny Graham struggled to get involved in Mondays game against Man City. As the central point of Swansea’s 4-2-3-1 system, Graham will get plenty of chances to score in easier fixtures, and he certainly knows how to put them away – he was the Championship’s top scorer last season with 24 goals, and also picked up 11 assists.

At 5.0m, Graham should slot into most fantasy sides very comfortably alongside a couple of big name strikers and with three home games in the next four against Wigan, Sunderland and West Brom, Graham should prove to be great value for the 2.2% of managers that have invested so far.

If you're happy to risk it, you could just upgrade Ferguson to Dyer?

Just .5mil to find - Barton for Sess? Jarvis for Sess? Really not ideal though.

Alternatively, Suarez to Saha is my shout - makes all the problems go away 🙂

          Yeah looks ok.

Personally I'm not so sure that Bolton at home is such a great game for Liverpool. Things will be clearer after this weekend, but even after Bolton, Liverpool have to go to Stoke and then Spurs.

That said, Suarez is clearly mustard, so it's difficult to make the case against.

Ok, any thoughts? I've been playing with this for hours

Baines, S. Taylor, Alex (Orr , De Laet)
    Sinclair, Fellaini, Moses, N'Zog (Taarabt)
    Bent, Torres (c), Rooney (v)

Feel like it's top heavy, but best I've come up with so far.

are you banking on fellani getting bonus points based on a nil nil draw? much lke mikel a la chelsea last week? or are you banking on his offensive prowess? because fellani doesn't score all that much, better off having ramsey even tho he is playing pool...simple based on his goal threat vs fellani's.
also get a 4.5 senderland defender instead of s taylor (new castle away this week**)

The thing that worries me about not having any expensive midfielders, with most likely Yaya being your priciest, is it makes things much more difficult down the line when you feel you have to get in the likes of VDV, Nani, Young, etc once their fixtures get better. So with that in mind I've stayed away from Baines but hopefully I won't regret it! He served me very well last season

Struggling with this (a lot)... but this is what I think...

      1. Arteta will be back to full fitness soon. He should play at least a part tomorrow. I think he'll be involved in both frees and pens - that will take away from Baines overall points tally.

      2. Doubts over Everton's finances at the mo' mean they *may be* under pressure to sell key players (if certain press association rumours are to be believed). In particular, if Jags is on the way to Arsenal, it could affect Baines' clean sheets.

      3. If I was QPR, I'd be *very* sore after last weekend.

      4. 8.0 also gets you Yaya in midfield, 1.5m shy of Suarez, 2/3 the cost of Rooney, 80% the cost of VDV (who is guaranteed to take pens if he avoids injury).

If I could afford Baines and was happy with the rest of my squad I would have him, but right now, trying to fit him in leaves my team very lop sided. I'm in the minority, and I got week 1 very, very wrong so don't rely on what I'm saying... but Baines isn't for me right now. Ask me in a few weeks after I see how Everton are getting on... 🙂

I think Baines will be on pens. Arteta missed his last one. Baines has 100% record I believe

    Torres Bent Suarez

£2mil in the bank to upgrade Bent to Rooney or RVP when I need to.
Midfielders may be cheap but can still all do a good job I feel. Can I go to sleep now then?!

Fulham likely to keep a clean sheet tomorrow? I don't think so.

Might put Senderos on my bench Dyer at home to Wigan or Taarabt away to Everton.

Most likely Dyer but I have Graham up front.

    That sound ok?
