As the dust was settling on a hectic, and at times bizarre opening weekend, it was time to pick through the scores, stats and highlights and scout out some more alternative options for this week’s ‘Differentials’. With dozens of new faces amongst the starting line-ups last weekend there were plenty to choose from, but in the end we settled on our final three. After last week’s ‘Differentials’ nearly outscored my entire FPL team, I’m hoping for another bumper week….

Russell Martin

Norwich skipper Russell Martin gets the first slot in this evening’s line-up. Coming in at 4.5 in FPL, he’s pricier than any other Canaries first-team defender and has suffered from investment as a consequence- while 4.0 Ritchie de Laet is owned by 110,223 Fantasy managers at the time of writing, Martin has been snapped up by just 5,553, which equates to 0.002%.

The club’s first home game of the season sees Stoke arrive at Carrow Road this Sunday and while the likes of De Laet and Zak Whitbread are kinder on the budget, Martin offers the greater potential. His raids down the right saw the full-back score 5 goals and picked up 2 assists for Paul Lambert’s side in the Championship last season; even if the home side concede, then, Martin’s attacking tendencies shows more promise at the other end of the pitch than the rest of the Norwich back-four.

Yohan Cabaye

Despite missing most of the pre-season, Yohan Cabaye impressed on his debut against Arsenal last weekend, and looks set to retain his starting spot for Newcastle’s tie against bitter rivals Sunderland. Without last season’s top scorer Kevin Nolan, Newcastle will be looking to Cabaye to provide a creative threat from midfield, and despite a dull game last week, Cabaye showed signs that he could become a key fantasy target over the season.

At Lille, Cabaye played a central playmaker role while also taking free kicks and penalties, and in the 09/10 season, he picked up 15 goals and 10 assists for his efforts. If he can produce anywhere near those sort of returns at Newcastle this season, then he will be excellent value at 6.0m, and his current ownership of just 0.9% will surely shoot up. It will be interesting to see if he takes on the majority of set pieces going forwards – Last weekend he shared free kicks with Joey Barton, so the jury is still out on that one.

Danny Graham

Any striker moving up to the Premier League from the Championship will find it much tougher to score, and as expected, Danny Graham struggled to get involved in Mondays game against Man City. As the central point of Swansea’s 4-2-3-1 system, Graham will get plenty of chances to score in easier fixtures, and he certainly knows how to put them away – he was the Championship’s top scorer last season with 24 goals, and also picked up 11 assists.

At 5.0m, Graham should slot into most fantasy sides very comfortably alongside a couple of big name strikers and with three home games in the next four against Wigan, Sunderland and West Brom, Graham should prove to be great value for the 2.2% of managers that have invested so far.

Hello there! First time I've posted, been an onlooker for a while.

Been having a pop at this old FPL malarky for, well, I suppose this is season number five. Managed to notch a PB of 750 in 2008/09, but then it was touch easier in the days you could glue the armband to Ronaldo & a Pool, Chelsea, Utd defensive combo would reap effortless rewards. Trickier this season, over priced players, dodgy site... however things seem to be settling. Oh, and before you even think about it, do not even contemplate 'rating' the following cause I couldn't give a rats! This is my team & this is why....

    Given (Vorm)
    Brown, Jagielka, Kompany (S.Taylor, Enrique)
    N'Zogbia, Ramsey, Lampard, Moses (Tiote)
    Fletcher, Torres, Rooney

£0.5mil in the bank allows a GW 4 switch from Torres/Rooney to Aguero/Van Persie all things being well with the little argentine & the brittle one.

GKs - Given edged Schwarzer on fixtures, Vorm edged Ruddy on several factors - not prepared to spend more than £9mil, no way Jose!
DFs - Prefer to have a nice rotational mix than a couple of dirt cheap £4.0m's. I think they all have potential for clean sheets, bonus & nodding the odd goal (or in Enrique's case getting Carroll to nod a goal for ya). Why waste a transfer on a defender when better used on a forward? Why have an anonymous, relegation fodder full back covering when your big defender gets injured for six weeks.
MFs - Moses (yes bandwagon n all that jive, but I don't mind jumping on £5.0m bandwagon. Could be Wigan's best player & it didn't do Nzogbia too bad all these years, who himself should be fine as one of only 2 attacking threats at villa, if he aint scoring em then benty will be tapping his assists in. Ramsey - he's just the one player at that price that has the potential to be massive. I know everyone's talking 'Arsenal crisis' but only a fool doubts Wenger. I remember when Fabregas first broke, I'm not saying Ramsey's anywhere near Fabregas but hey he might just do a decent job. Tiote - I don't think you need 15 players, you need one player who is just there in an absolute emergency, who plays every game & touch wood when you have to pick him he grabs you 2 or 3 pts rather than a yellow card! Oh & erm Fat Frank. I will not say much but in world on silvas, youngs, nanis yayas & maloudas I'm quite happy to have fat boy as the differential in my cash league - we will see.
FWs - Fletcher - form/fixtures, Torres - fixtures/decent showing in week one (this guy is my absolute curse over the last 3 years so this is a real leap of faith), Rooney - as much as I hate to say it as Liverpool man - but I'm afraid he's gonna 'be on it like a car bonnet this season'

Ooof, apoligies, rambled on a bit there, but hey it's taken me 5 years to post & I've had a few beers. All the best for season ahead... good luck.

The flaws are 12 million pounds on fat boy & no chelsea defenders. Brown & Taylor injury risks, Tiote breaking a premier league record for yellow cards & Torres, well god alone knows with Torres. I will take my chances & will be saving the wildcard for when absolutely necessary, hopefully March/April when fixtures/injuries go mental.

      Good team structure, good reasoning.

I would argue Bosingwa over Jagielka, Simpson over Taylor, Sessegnon over Ramsey, Yaya over N'Zog, Surman over Tiote, but those are just alternatives at the same price point.

Best of luck, and welcome to FFS.

Good luck sir telesales, you seem to know what you're at anyway. Even though you don't want help, Moses' fixtures stiffen up soon and it'd help to have someone to fill in when he inevitably has shit fixtures. If I were you I'd downgrade Fletcher and upgrade Tiote, but it's up to you.

Nah Tiote's a makeweight, a 38 gamer (minus obligatory suspensions). Will upgrade Moses via Torres, Rooney, Lamps cash - value in key positions will slowly emerge within about 6 weeks and at which point if Moses aint doin it then it shouldn't be to hard to edge someone like a brunt or o'hara in for example.

Both good options - you can't go wrong either way. Looks like you have 21.5 to play with... if you want to take a chance..

Bosingwa (5.5 - should start but not 100% guaranteed)
      Sinclair (6.0)
      Suarez (9.5)

      = 21.0 + 0.5 to spare...

Many here think Bosingwa will start - I've gone for Cole to be sure...

    B: Dyer (Wigan at home)

    C: Taarabt (Everton away)

Don’t think Fulham will keep a clean sheet.

hate these decisions... if its any help, I sometimes end up picking the player I prefer... if you get it wrong, you can transfer out over the next week or two.

In this particular scenario (personally)... Liverpool have tricky enough fixtures. If Villa are going to get it right this season, it really has to be in their first 10 (favourable) fixtures. So I chose Bent for my team. If I'm wrong, I can easily switch back to Suarez (straight trade 10.0 -> 9.5 + any price increase). If I chose Suarez and Bent rips it up, I won't have the funds to 'get Bent' (if you'll pardon the expression...).

I hear ya though - tough call - good luck with whatever you decide...

Man Utd will score in their next few fixtures - they're at home, easier than they look and with the defence weakened they might focus on outscoring the opposition. Rooney is the undisputed main man in attack.

Man City have tough away fixtures with a conservative manager and a shedload of strikers with no definite first choice yet.

    Bosingwa and Bent
    or
    Brown and Torres?

Bosingwa: Rotation risk, nice run of fixtures, good attacking potential
    Bent: Proven goalscorer, good fixtures
Brown: Guaranteed starter, solid performance last week, fixtures not too bad
Torres: Rotation risk?, 2 nice fixtures, showed some form last week but could easily flop, can swap to Aguero if needs be

    Please help

Cole, Lamps and Torres is a bit overkill. Over 30m tied up in one team is too much imo
