Our pre-Gameweek members article which focuses on the main captaincy contenders arrives once again this evening. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

Alexis Sanchez is the runaway leader of this week’s poll as Arsenal prepare to host Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon. Selected by 50%, the Chilean has produced returns in eight of his nine home starts this season and served up four double-figure hauls (13, 16, 10, 19) at the Emirates already – Villa have conceded in five of their last six road trips and look up against it here. This was, of course, prior to Arsene Wenger’s admission that the Chilean is a hamstring doubt for the weekend and will be assessed, forcing many to reconsider their selection.

Angel Di Maria (8%) and Wayne Rooney (4%) find a place in the top four for United’s home match with Leicester. Neither player has much form to shout about – the Argentine has just two assists in his last eight league appearances, whilst Rooney has blanked in five of his last six. The latter has, however, been consistent in front of his own fans and earned points in six of his eight Old Trafford appearances.

It’s fair to say that the vast majority – if not all – of Diego Costa’s votes were prior to news over the last day or two. Charged by the FA over his stamping incident with Emre Can, he has subsequently contested the decision and it won’t be until tomorrow before we know the outcome, with a ban still looking likely. Prior to all that, he was the Chelsea player of choice as the league leaders face champions City at the Bridge – over 5% opted for the Spain international, who is in the middle of a purple patch after racking up five goals and a pair of assists in the last five. Just 2% are favouring Eden Hazard after back-to-back blanks, though 3% reckon Sergio Aguero is worthy of our consideration against a defence that’s conceded just once in their last eight at Stamford Bridge.

Palace’s Dwight Gayle is also in contention. Selected by 3%, the budget striker has 24 points in two appearances under Alan Pardew and hosts an Everton side with a single clean sheet in the last 12 outings. Tottenham’s Harry Kane is backed by a similar number ahead of a tricky trip to West Brom – having scored in five of his last six on the road, though, the youngster looks the likeliest to breach the Baggies backline. Olivier Giroud has also been backed by 3% after scoring four times in his last five – if Sanchez is indeed ruled out, his output looks key for the Gunners.

    Not on WC
I think this is what I'll be going with for a few GWs possibly

    Forster
    Cresswell, Bertrand, Ivan
    Sterling, ADM, Fabregas, Silva
    Pelle, Aguero, Giroud

    (Robles, Kelly, Wisdom, Ameobi)

      Looks good. Missing Sanchez/Hazard, though...

I like the forward line, but Pelle may need downgrading to fund Sanchez/Hazard.

        Forster
        Cresswell, Bertrand, Ivan
        Sterling, ADM, Fabregas, Sanchez, Walcott
        Aguero, Giroud

        (Robles, Kelly, Wisdom, Barnes)

        Is this better?

Had same problems before WWC 😀

I've sold Downing during GW22 because I was pissed off by other players and he was just one of the puzzles. Now I don't regret because there are plenty of valuable players to replace him.

I wouldn't also put trust in Moreno and Boyd... Had similar trio in attack before WWC, but now i don't see Austin as an option.

Your defense is wayyyy too expensive.
Your team is lacking Sanchez and Haz and I'm not a big fan of the Panti/Heaton rotation. Heaton will be your starter probably only twice in the next 10, not worth the extra money.

      1. charliekiller
        • 13 Years

        1. As you can see, Giroud & Caz are replacements - in fact, for Sanchez (which I own since GW1 and I'm kinda proud of it, but now - considering to ditch him) and Costa. Before WWC, I've owned Hazard but decided to sell due to low loss (bought him late and lost 0.1 of value).

        2. I've brought Panti for 4.6 and I think it was worth - I've already owned Heaton since GW9.

        @Kuki, Mark K.

OK, I've brought Terry & Kos to spend surplus 😀 there were Cissokho/Cameron/Wisdom instead Wollscheid/Terry/Kos - all caused by surplus after selling Costa 🙂

Strangest damned injury I can remember....Sanchez at well over 90% ownership hardly matters if he scores and hardly matters if he's injured for one match...That alone is a good reason to get shut...he could at least have made it three matches to mix the game up a bit...

Good luck to those who are ditching him.

This gw27/28 needs some thought when doing a WC team
    - how many gw27s can I run with, surely 4 outfield is the limit
    - can I afford any defensive punts like bellarin / Baird if I plan to have 3 benched
    - Do we pick a gk for it?
    - Do we pick all 3 of Kane, Austin, Costa or hang onto kun?

Maybe I'll be lazy and wait for jonty to raise a hot topic on it

Optimal picks is to plan for one DGW keeper for your bench and three outfield DGW for your bench...plus 2 FT's between GW 26/27....

That will allow a full squad for GW26 and at least four DGW players-increasing to six if you choose...

I agree in principle wakey though GKs are over priced (courteous, lloris) or rubbish (green) or uncertain (hamer/schm). May not be worth disrupting a season long rotation

You also need a nailed bench which rules out the likes of Baird and bellarin.

By the time I finalise my WC I will have a target squad for both GWs with the 3/5 outfield as you suggest as we need to ensure we have the funds to sequence it as well.

        It's far from simple

How are people planning for the blank 27, dgw 28?

Obviously kane can be benched for 1 week and used for double
But is it worth getting Vertonghen ahead of it?
Or is it wiser to bring him in week 28 and get someone like Koschelny till then?

Both donkeys, though Pelle could benefit from Swansea's generous defence and their usual difficulties with big physical strilkers.

      Kane's a bargain, keep him.

If Kane and Pelle were the same price, I'd rather have Kane.

Pelle - 12 goal attempts, 1 on target (last four gameweeks)

Love me some Pelle. If I end up wildcarding this week, he's probably going to find his way into my team. Right now can't spare the free transfer for him though.

Costa > Giroud would be an additional -4, the other hit, I'm comfortable with.
