As the dust was settling on a hectic, and at times bizarre opening weekend, it was time to pick through the scores, stats and highlights and scout out some more alternative options for this week’s ‘Differentials’. With dozens of new faces amongst the starting line-ups last weekend there were plenty to choose from, but in the end we settled on our final three. After last week’s ‘Differentials’ nearly outscored my entire FPL team, I’m hoping for another bumper week….

Russell Martin

Norwich skipper Russell Martin gets the first slot in this evening’s line-up. Coming in at 4.5 in FPL, he’s pricier than any other Canaries first-team defender and has suffered from investment as a consequence- while 4.0 Ritchie de Laet is owned by 110,223 Fantasy managers at the time of writing, Martin has been snapped up by just 5,553, which equates to 0.002%.

The club’s first home game of the season sees Stoke arrive at Carrow Road this Sunday and while the likes of De Laet and Zak Whitbread are kinder on the budget, Martin offers the greater potential. His raids down the right saw the full-back score 5 goals and picked up 2 assists for Paul Lambert’s side in the Championship last season; even if the home side concede, then, Martin’s attacking tendencies shows more promise at the other end of the pitch than the rest of the Norwich back-four.

Yohan Cabaye

Despite missing most of the pre-season, Yohan Cabaye impressed on his debut against Arsenal last weekend, and looks set to retain his starting spot for Newcastle’s tie against bitter rivals Sunderland. Without last season’s top scorer Kevin Nolan, Newcastle will be looking to Cabaye to provide a creative threat from midfield, and despite a dull game last week, Cabaye showed signs that he could become a key fantasy target over the season.

At Lille, Cabaye played a central playmaker role while also taking free kicks and penalties, and in the 09/10 season, he picked up 15 goals and 10 assists for his efforts. If he can produce anywhere near those sort of returns at Newcastle this season, then he will be excellent value at 6.0m, and his current ownership of just 0.9% will surely shoot up. It will be interesting to see if he takes on the majority of set pieces going forwards – Last weekend he shared free kicks with Joey Barton, so the jury is still out on that one.

Danny Graham

Any striker moving up to the Premier League from the Championship will find it much tougher to score, and as expected, Danny Graham struggled to get involved in Mondays game against Man City. As the central point of Swansea’s 4-2-3-1 system, Graham will get plenty of chances to score in easier fixtures, and he certainly knows how to put them away – he was the Championship’s top scorer last season with 24 goals, and also picked up 11 assists.

At 5.0m, Graham should slot into most fantasy sides very comfortably alongside a couple of big name strikers and with three home games in the next four against Wigan, Sunderland and West Brom, Graham should prove to be great value for the 2.2% of managers that have invested so far.

Going away now, this will be my team.
    Hilario (Vorm)
    Baines Young DeLaet (Simpson, Gabbidon)
    Lampard Sessegnon Taarabt Moses (Ferguson)
    Rooney Suarez Torres(c)

Barring injuries this will be my team next week as well but with Simpson playing instead of DeLaet.
Keeper combo and defense is good for something like four weeks and with two transfers every other week I can probably hold off the WC until GW 8-10.

You do realise that there's an international break after Gw3, so Hilario will probably only get 2 games max.

Apart from that, I like it a lot.

Thanks, no, I hadn't realised, damn. I think I'll still take my chances, the other option would be to go without Villa cover and choose Ruddy+Bosingwa, might go for a late change at the mobile site then.

Depends when you think you need to wildcard, Civan.

It seems like quite a few people on here are planning to use theirs after the end of GW3 to catch the price rises, so you will be fine with Hilario if that's your plan too.

    Re-post for new page.

    Given

    Bosingwa – Kompany – Jagielka

    Silva – Cahill (VC) – N’Zogbia – Sess

    Rooney – Torres (C) – Graham

BENCH: Vorm – Moses – De Laet – Simpson
    BANK: 0.5M

Brought in Jags for Enrique for short term since their fixtures are better. Have a little wiggle room in terms of future moves I’d like to make while taking advantage of some good fixtures. Think I’m pretty happy with it. Should I be?

Cahill is another source of botheration for me. I want him but can't afford him. I opted for Baines though, who may be a better bet in terms of overall points.

I have no idea whether you can shoehorn Baines into that team given you have Jags, but it may be worth considering him as Everton coverage rather than doubling up.

Looks good to me (seven of 15 in my team!)

Wiggle room is interesting. i.e. you've got 0.5 held back. I've got zilch, but think I have one or two players who are going to enjoy price rises fairly quickly, so best to have them now. Just another approach. But appreciate other players could be out of reach from week 2 unless I realise funds from transfers.

Trouble is, the way to free-up 0.5 is Vorm (over Krul) and Swansea don't rotate at all well with Villa

    Young or Warnock in defence?

Also brunt + hoolahan and keep 1m to be able to swap bent out for torres/aguero later or larsson + hoolahan and keep 0.5 for a rainy day.

Also is it worthwhile assuming cahill will be out the door before august and will end up at a better club with better fixtures? Shall i invest in him despite their poor run of fixtures?

I am close to my v2.0 team. A couple of questions remain but here's how it stands -

    Given (Ruddy)
    Baines, Bosingwa, Brown (DeLaet, Simpson)
    Malouda, Cahill, NZogbia, Dyer (Moses)
    Holt, Rooney(v), Torres(c)

Arteta or Cahill, what do you think?

      Arteta/Brunt vs. Cahill/Moses

      Malouda or Nani/Young?

      Brown or Woodgate?

I would pick Cahill/Moses, Nani, Brown
        Reasons:
        1. Not too sure about Arteta starting/fitness,Brunt is great after this week(6mill is expensive to bench)
Cahill as he poses a threat upfront and they're playing QPR
Moses will be central to all wigan's attack this week.

        2. Didn't lie the look of Malouda last week(cue hattrick or gluttony of points) Nani loves OT and will be there for two weeks.

        3. Brown is at home and i feel sunderland are a good defensive unit with not too bad fixtures coming up.

Do I keep Lamps and have front 8 of : Taarabt, Moses, Surman, Dempsey, Lamps, Suarez, Graham, Rooney,

or downgrade Lamps to Brunt and upgrade Graham to Torres?

            Hello my Gooner friend.

Very happy with the takeover. At least the new owners will spend some money on Prem quality defenders and a holding mid.

There has been a very negative cloud over the club all of the offseason and I reckon that translated to the players too as they love Warnock but weren't sure about his job security.

Now that Bhatia is joint owner (he was the one who bought Warnock to QPR) Neil's job is safe.

All off season our first teamers were crying out for quality new signings. We need some pacy defenders and a holding mid. They should get prem quality players now with the money the new owners are prepared to spend. If they do then I'd say we'd have a very good chance of staying up.

Under FB and BE we would have gone straight back down.

Everton may beat us today although they are a club in turmoil and fans talking of protests at the game, so a result wouldn't be impossible there, but they should beat us. I think 2-1 Everton.

However, after today I think they will bring in good players and from GW3 on this team should be a hell of a lot better.

How you feeling about Arsenal these days?

Richards is a rotation threat and will get injured soon enough anyway.

Kompany is their skipper so will play most every week. At £6m he's a solid starter you can play every week in a team that will give you a chance of a cleanie in every game they play.

My logic is that Baines is too expensive for a defender but this QPR fixture is too good to ignore so will see who hogs set pieces out of the pair.

Everton had a lot of injuries last year so players fit in to get the best out of the situation, everyone is fit now so maybe Arteta will be free to do what he does best and with Coleman out an attacking position has become available.

He has Heitinga, Rodwell, Neville and Felaini who can sit deep, surely Arteta won't be wasted and will take up an attacking spot??

thanks for the input! it's a tricky decision; Wolves had a shaky defence last season, but he could make it stronger this campaign; upside is bonus points (many last year) and potential to score some goals--I have a feeling he will be a defender to start scoring some this year (there seem to sort of be one or two new ones each season)

for now I'm inclined to keep him

my full defence (and keeper situation) is:
Given and Hilario -- planning to start Hilario in short term, Given will over longer range be main keeper though

Kompany, Bosingwa, A. Hughes, D. Simpson, and R. Johnson

do you think this is a balanced and well-chosen defence?

          I don't. No.

Hilario will play a maximum of two games since there's an international break after gameweek 3, so then you will be relying on Given staying fit because you will have no backup goalkeeper.

And Given seems to pick up knocks and strains more often than RVP.

So if you're happy with the idea that after GW3 then you run the risk of having no goalkeeper at all, or happy to transfer out Hilario for someone else at a later stage then you are much less risk averse than I am.

    I've just made a decision.

Unless people have a valid link to their team, or unless I see them helping other people with answers to their questions then I'm not going to help them with their RMT's or "X vs Y" questions.

    Why should I?

    is a best MF of

    Moses,Sessegnon,Sinclair,Yaya Toure

in a 3-4-3 just suicide? Granted the others are top dollar, but can a MF like this be competitive? Previous seasons I'd say no, but this lot and others are pretty decent bets?

        @KarlosII

It's a decent midfield but without knowing the rest of your team then I can't give you much advice.

Your name link doesn't work, maybe because you want to keep your team secret from your mini-league competitors, but IMHO all you need to do is to name your full team and then ask for advice and then DON'T say what changes you will actually make, but just thank the people that reply.

That way, any of your competitors won't know whether you have taken the advice or not, so your changes remain secret.

There are far too many posters here who are over-paranoid (I just made up that word) about their competitors knowing what transfers they plan to make.

Even the end of the season when you're within a few points of your arch nemesis then their team is likely to be so different than yours that if they try to copy your team it would involve them taking massive points hits.

If your teams are very similar at that stage then see paragraph 2. 🙂

thanks mate, no not paranoid in the slightest, just can't seem to make it work!

          My team is:

          Hilario
          Baines,Bosingwa,Richards
          Moses,Sessegnon,Sinclair,Yaya Toure
          Aguero,Torres(c),Rooney

          Vorm,Fox,De Laet,Simpson

I just really need to break this annoying addiction I seem to be developing to over tinkering, its not healthy! I have 2 real dilemmas, top heavy (dont rate many high priced MF's over the cheaper options this season) or MF heavy. I feel I'm missing a Lampard or Young in MF but doing that severely weakens the overall team. Any more input really welcomed 🙂

Your team link needs updating then.

Go to "My Team" and click on history, then copy and paste that link into your profile.

It does take a while to work though. A few hours in my case if I remember correctly.

I don't like your GK combo since Hilario will play 2 games maximum, but you know that already.

The rest of it looks good but risky in some respects though. I think Bosingwa is pretty much nailed on for the next few weeks but is that Micah Richards? And Aguero is on my watch list but nowhere near my team yet.

So my advice would be to get a surefire cheap forward instead of Aggers, and upgrade Hilario to, well, anyone better than him (Which gives you plenty of scope), and Richards to Kompany or Lescott if you want Man C coverage.

But it's all about risk/reward. IMO you have too many risks in that team but that's your call.

Graham, Given and VDV? I think its too early for VDV fixtures wise but he was great against Hearts (although a far cry from MUN) - the alternative is to just go for Suarez over Aggers and spend the other mil after getting Given back in upgrading a bencher - perhaps to Enrique.

Cech has done his medial ligaments, I think he could be out far longer. However:

                Given,Vorm (not great rotation)
                Baines,Bosingwa,Simpson,Kompany,Jose Enrique
                Yaya Toure,Fox,Sessegnon,Moses,Sinclair

Aguero would be a massive doubt for me - nobody is immune from Mancini's rotations. I have 11M for a forward and can't settle on one, Torres seemed like an obvious choice but I'm not sure the chances of him starting

I think the doubt lies with his fitness (or lack of).

Plus didn't he come on for De Jong against Swans? It is unthinkable for Mancini not to start with de Jong away at Bolton who were very strong at the Reebok last year.

The way I see it is there is an awful lot of City love on here. Have people forgotten they were humbled by United in the CS and were outdone by Swansea for a large part of the opening game?

There are better options than Aguero in the next two games.

I posted this at silly o'clock last night and didn't get much response so gonna try again.

What do people make of the 'star' players from the Championship this season? Having done my research and got a sneak peak at them last week I'm not impressed.

Last season you could get Nolan & Carroll for 5.5 and Adam for 5 at the start. This year it's Holt/Hoolahan for 5.5, Taraabt for 6.5 & Sinclair for 6. More expensive & IMO not as good.

Newcastle were essentially a Premier League quality team with Championship priced players & Adam was clearly a class act. But I don't think any of the newly promoted teams offer any value (sounding a bit like Wenger now...)

    What do you think?

On the whole, I think you're right.

I'm just making judgements on what I saw last weekend and Monday.

Taraabt looked completely out of his depth. If he gets manmarked (as he will in the PL) then his chances of racking up points are close to zero.

Sinclair looked better, but the same argument applies, I think.

Holt was rubbish. Watching his movement was like watching a scared rabbit occasionally being trapped in the headlights. Surman looked like the real deal though.

Hoolihan was positionally much better which allowed him to score from Al-Habsi's spill, but that won't happen every week.

I do rate DJ Campbell because he has PL pedigree.

As for the rest of the bnch, the only player I have is Vorm, because he looks class, and the Dutch seem to be able to make the switch into the PL without many problems (see VDV).

      Does that help?

Yes it does! I've seen so many RMT's with midfields consisting of Taraabt, Sinclair, Moses, Sessegnon etc & I just can't see where the points are going to come from?

I've gone for a relatively tried and tested team for now:

        Given, (Vorm)
Baines, Kompany, Woodgate, S Taylor (Simpson)
        Nani, Silva, N'Zogbia (Surman, Ferguson)
        Torres, Bent, Saha

Too much dependance on Everton & Villa?

I don't know the rest of your team but those sound like two very wise moves to me.

Graham could be a superstar this season (I should have mentioned him in the post above).
