Marouane Fellaini is handed a role up front as United sweep aside Cambridge at Old Trafford. Sunderland get the better of Fulham but Gus Poyet has worries out wide ahead of the weekend trip to Swansea. Harry Redknapp quits as QPR boss, whilst Garry Monk’s midfield worries grow as Marvin Emnes is ruled out through injury.

UNITED THROUGH ON THE SECOND ATTEMPT

Goals from Juan Mata, Marcus Rojo and James Wilson saw Man United ease past Cambridge 3-0 in their FA Cup fourth round replay last night. Wayne Rooney, Angel Di Maria and Robin van Persie all started against the League Two side, whilst Jonny Evans and Ashley Young marked their return from injury with starting and substitute roles respectively. In a surprising move, Louis van Gaal handed Marouane Fellaini a role up front, and after watching the Belgian contribute to two of United’s goals, the Reds boss explained his decision post-match:

“With Fellaini, we have always also an attacking point through the air. Cambridge have very tall players and we could score also in the air and not only along the floor. That was our game plan and he confirmed that [his aerial prowess] again. I think we could have scored more goals. In the second half, we played a little bit more forward and I believe we created more chances. Robin van Persie had four possibilities so we could have scored more but I am very happy the first chance of the match, for Cambridge, was against the post.”

Van Gaal also explained his decision to sub off Van Persie was pre-planned and cited an increase in fixture schedule as the main factor:

“I said already [to Robin] at half-time, ‘I shall change after 60-70 minutes because I want you to play against West Ham United.’ It’s always difficult to play three matches in a week. I have given rest to five players. I think that when we have won, after the match I can say it was a very good decision. I gave Van Persie a rest during the match and also Di Maria, and I gave Ashley Young minutes to play because he is back again.”

The Scout Says: Having talked up his side’s chances of going all the way in the cup, Van Gaal’s numerous changes were perhaps a sign that the Reds’ boss will be keen to utilise his squad in a season which has deprived them of such opportunities. Yesterday’s shift in tactics was heavily criticised by some pundits, though managers will now be monitoring Fellaini in the hope that he is offered more chances in an attacking role – the 6.3-valued Belgian has notched twice in his last five appearances in the league. Meanwhile, Rooney was shifted to the right of the midfield diamond – with Mata handed the role in “the hole” – and the England skipper blanked once again. The same can be said of Van Persie, who now has just one goal in his previous six outings in all competitions, and with Wilson pushing hard for more pitch time with yesterday’s strike from the bench, it remains to be seen how long Van Gaal keeps faith with his fellow countryman.

BLACK CATS BATTLE BACK AGAINST THE COTTAGERS

Gus Poyet made three changes to his Sunderland XI for last night’s FA Cup replay against Fulham. Ricardo Alvarez, Steven Fletcher and Emanuele Giaccherini were handed call-ups, with the former putting his side in the lead after an own goal had cancelled out Hugo Rodallega’s opener for the hosts, whilst Jordi Gomez sealed the 3-1 victory from the penalty spot late on. Post-match, it was confirmed that a trio of Black Cats players missed out due to injury. Jack Rodwell suffered a knock in training on the day and Connor Wickham picked up a calf problem in the warm-up, though Poyet remained coy over the extent of either player’s complaint. Adam Johnson, meanwhile, was absent after undergoing minor surgery on a thumb problem, but revealed that he should be available for his side’s trip to Swansea at the weekend:

“I just have to get it done, it’s not a serious thing. But I need the wound to heel. It’s the risk of infection that’s keeping me out. It’s the best time to do it with the games coming up though.”

After the win, Poyet talked up Alvarez’ prospects after the on-loan winger turned on the style at the Cottage:

“Hopefully, this is the start of something special for him. You could see from the reaction of his team-mates what it meant to them too. They see him in training every day, and know what he can do because they have to try to get the ball from him.The problem is that we haven’t been able to play him a lot, but I said after the last game, ‘I have to play Ricky’. We needed to find a way to get him into the team and enable him to play, and the circumstances enabled me to play him here. Now, everyone can see why I need him on the pitch – let’s see if we can get him to the pace of English football and find the balance that will help him succeed.”

The Scout Says: The Black Cats may have got themselves back to winning form against Burnley at the weekend, but this new spate of injuries could hinder their chances of building any real momentum. Johnson and Wickham were fielded on the flanks against the Clarets on Saturday but depending on the extent of the problems, we could see the Wearsiders return to a five-man backline set-up at the weekend, with Patrick Van Aanholt and Anthony Reveillere utilised as wing-backs. With that formation in mind, Johnson should slot back in behind a front two if he is indeed available in time for the Swansea encounter, though the 5.7-priced Alvarez certainly staked a claim for inclusion with last night’s strike, which could prove detrimental to the former Man City man’s minutes. Meanwhile, Jermain Defoe’s owners will have been disappointed to see Jordi Gomez on penalty duties against the Cottagers, suggesting that the Spaniard, when on the pitch, is ahead in the pecking order for now.

REDKNAPP STEPS DOWN

Harry Redknapp announced his resignation as QPR manager yesterday, with Les Ferdinand and Chris Ramsey temporarily taking charge of the Hoops.

The Scout Says: Wise move ‘Arry. Yesterday’s shock news raised a whole lot of questions surrounding the exact nature of his resignation, with the veteran manager claiming an imminent knee operation to be the cause of his departure. Either way, without a win on the road this season and currently amidst a three-match losing streak, the R’s are mired in the bottom three and are clearly floundering. Will a change in management reignite things at Loftus Road? From a Fantasy perspective, the main interest will be how the changes affect Charlie Austin, who currently stands as the third most owned forward in the Fantasy Premier League game, and yet he has only managed one goal in his last five. Indeed, the striker has failed to score from open play since Gameweek 17, and his owners will be keen to see a new manager instigate a fresh wave of form from the 6.5-priced man.

EMNES OUT FOR SWANSEA

Marvin Emnes has been ruled out for two to three weeks with the hamstring strain he suffered against Southampton last Sunday.

The Scout Says: With Wayne Routledge still injured and Jefferson Montero currently a doubt heading into the Swans’ weekend clash with Sunderland, Garry Monk may have to place his faith in Mo Barrow and hand the young Gambian, who is expected to recover from Ryan Bertrand’s vicious challenge at St Mary’s, his first league start on the left flank. With Sunderland, West Brom and Burnley in the Swans’ next four, interest in their assets would normally be high right now but, with their current injury and suspension difficulties, only Sunday’s match-winner Jonjo Shelvey looks worthy of our attention, though even he has only managed to attract 900 new owners this week.

dependent on Villa - Leicester in FA Cup.
If Villa wins, most probably Che will have a DGW28.
If Lei wins then no DGW28 for Che.
Not sure what happens if there will be a replay required.

If you still hold you wildcard I guess you want Chelsea to play GW28 but for people like me who threw theirs away in GW3 I'd be happier if their DGW was later in the season.

If Che have a DGW28 then I think not worth bothering with non Che/Spurs players for that week. It's Lei and QPR and they have bad fixtures.
I'll have 3 of them in GW27 and hopefully 2FT GW28 to add extra 2.
If all goes to plan then going to have 3CHE + Erik+Kane for DGW28.
          Manageable without a WC.

Would move Clichy to Terry if possible and also don't love Liverpools next 7 fixtures after this week so consider Silva or Nasri if he returns well

Really hope this isn't true, what a waste it would be:

Reports in Germany suggest that Bayern Munich and former Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola could take over as Qatar's coach for the 2022 World Cup.
The 44-year-old signed a three-year contract with Bayern when he joined in 2013 but has yet to agree a new deal with the Bundesliga leaders. German newspaper Sport Bild dedicated its front page on Wednesday to speculation that he could be tempted by a lucrative deal with the 2022 World Cup hosts.
The 44-year-old spent two seasons at the end of his playing career at Qatar Stars League side Al-Ahli and was part of the 2022 World Cup bid.

Looked through the seasons games where man city have had both Silva and Aguero on the pitch together and the returns are 10 points per game for Aguero and 6 points per game for Silva.

Silva on the pitch when Aguero is injured is 8.2 points per game.

Aguero on the pitch when Silva is injured is 7.8 points per game

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Is triple Arsenal attack feasible.

Is anyone considering tripling up on Arsenal's attacking assets with Ozil, Walcott, Cazorla, Sanchez and Giroud all looking capable of racking up double digit scores against weak opposition on current form?

Or is that too much risk? Is Sanchez now too expensive as well when Ozil and Cazorla can be drafted in far cheaper. Also what about the strong value of Arsenal's defence? Can we afford to overlook that?

I may do next week, but only because I have Walcott and Sanchez and want Giroud. If I do Bertrand to Naughton, I can do Austin to Giroud, but I'd probably ditch Walcott the following week (unless he looks first choice).

I'm currently writing a short post about Sanchez. The desire to get rid puzzles me. Right now, it's all looking dandy... Ozil, Cazorla and Walcott all scoring. But none of them have the combination of being nailed AND a goal scorer.. unlike dear Alexis (IF fit, granted).

Alexis, Giroud + one, for me.

you only need 3 defenders , chelsea , saints and 3 rotating cheapies is the way to go .. In attack you cant overlook assured returns , so 2 mids and Giru is the way to go . only issue with ozil and theo is their gametime , pretty certain that Santi and Sanchez will start almost every game

I don't think I've ever tripled up on someone's attack. The risk is too great if they blank to have 3 of your forward 7 not deliver. It's fine when they score 5, but if they only score 1 or 2, you'll likely have one or two blanks.

I'm considering ditching Sanchez this week, and then bringing in Theo if he becomes a regular, and adding a defender from Leicester onwards.

Your overall score won't be that great if you have 2 blankers a week. I think you need to be pretty certain to score 3 or 4 most weeks to have a proportionally decent chance of them all returning.

not true. people just tend to get sentimental when having 3 attacers from a one team. eriksen, for example, has blanked 14 times out of 23 and is no. 3 among midfielders. chelsea mostly score 1 or 2 goals but hazard, fabregas & costa are among the top 5 players OVERALL atm in points. they can blank and will blank but it doenst matter. you can check your GW history and see how oftern your midfielders blank regardless of the team they play for.

Too much value in Bellerin for me to ditch him but I'd have no problem owning 3 attackers from Arsenal otherwise - I'm not a big worrier about eggs and baskets.

Its my current wc draft. I dont like it especially this week but im too scared to go without sanchez, cazorla is in the form of his life and giroud is the best option under 9m which helps my overall squad structure.

I think i will do it, maybe up to gw28 when i will get erik back for caz and austin back for giroud

One of the reasons Im having my best season in 12 years playing this infuriating game is because Ive finally realised (Im a bit slow...) that its OK to have 2 attacking players from the same team. Isolate the scoring potential of each player from who they play for and you therefore can easily argue for 3 from one team too.....although Im not in that place just yet!

      Giroud and any 9.5m mid

no. because they wont get pens and score 5 goals every game.

defender + 2 attack not far off essential though

that's probably the way I'll go. Koscielny is my defender of choice and I have Cazorla and Sanchez. For me I think two is plenty because I like their defence too - but I think as with Liverpool last season three is feasible in attack. Last season I had Sturridge and Suarez for a large part of the season and for a bit during that time I also had Gerrard. All did well, assisting each others goals.

The thing I really like about Arsenal midfielders and giroud is the ability to rack up monster scores with assists, goals and bonus. Ozil was overshadowed by Cazorla in FPL terms- but still got 13 pts... Sanchez as well is more than capable of those kind of returns.

No, because if Giroud and Sánchez are nailed on... then Cazorla, Walcott, Özil, Rosický are fighting for two places in the team, and Walcott has good grounds for a starting place on tactical reasons, and Özil does based on his performance against Villa.

If you take off your FPL goggles, you will realise that Özil and Giroud were the standout players for Arsenal against Villa, if you listen to the guardian podcast you'll realise Cazorla hardly got a mention when they reviewed that game. Though they did mention FPL and how AC Jimbo took walters out of his team ahead of his hat trick. 😳

      TRIPLE Arsenal attack ?
      No..

TWO Arsenal attacker + ONE Arsenal defender = How I find it the best

The attackers : Ozil + Giroud
The defender : Bellerin or Ospina

      Reasons :

      1) I prefer Ozil over Sanchez because of his cheaper price tag, and I think you'll also agree that there is not actually much of a difference between the two's caliber, both in terms of goals and assists.

      2) I prefer Giroud over another midfield option is because he is nailed. More than any of Cazorla, Ozil, Walcott and he is the striker at a price cheaper than Cazorla. So that's something.

      3) I like Bellerin budget-friendliness, but its too much of a headache for me to have a player who can drop into the bench any day, thus I have chosen Ospina, who I think is can safely be considered as Arsenal's No.1. Your view can for sure differ.

Re 1. i vehemently disagree that there's not much of a difference between Ozil and Sanchez, in terms of goals and assists. Ozil has never had 10 goals in a season, Sanchez could end up with 20. Ozil may be better value, may get more assists, but he and Sanchez are very different fantasy (and real) players.

Carver after the Hull game: "He’s knuckled down, he’s got a lot to learn but he has ability. I took him off because he was tired, but he did work hard for the team. He has a future – as long as he is prepared to put in performances like that."

Not nailed but should get minutes most matches.

Thanks greenwindmill. Nice season you having, keep it going 🙂

He has attacking potential, not been nailed obviously a problem and would be frustrating if i needed him wk 27, other weeks my defensive bench could cope. Potentially i only have 4.6m so boyd out of reach.

This would be the 2nd time i would own ameobi this season 😯

    Morning, any advice appreciated -

    Panti (Krul)
Terry / Clyne / Wisdom (Cameron / Hutton)
Hazard / Sanchez / ADM / Chadli (JWP)
    Kane / Giroud / Aguero

    2.6 ITB

This week what would you do? -

    A) ADM > Silva
    B) Cameron > PVA
    C) Save FT
    D) Chadli > Sterling/Cazorla/Walcott
    E) ADM & Chadli > Walcott & Silva (-4)
    F) JWP & Chadli > Ameobi & Silva (-4)
    G) Something else entirely

    Unfortunately 0.3m off Chadli>Silva

Fastest risers on FFF at the moment: Silva, Aguero, Clyne, Cazorla. No surprises there really but none rising fast.

Fastest fallers: Sanchez, Bertrand, Costa, Rooney. Sanchez falling fastest which is a bit surprising maybe considering Bertrand and Costa are definitely out for 3 and 2 games respectively.

As of last week, Sanchez had 80% ownership among the top 1000. Will be interesting to see what it will be on Saturday night. My guess is down to 60% or so.

My two picks for captain with afew pros/cons for each. Very tough choice, who will you going for

    Hazard vs Villa away:
-Costa out so perhaps less assist potential but higher goal potential
-Cuadrado will probably start so it may all be about him
-Whoever starts out of Drogba/Remy will have something to prove so will be looking to score (could be a pro or con)
-Villa in awful form and will almost definitely concede afew goals
-Hazard in decent form but not scored in a while
    -On pens

    Aguero vs Hull at home:
-Hull in poor form, they conceded 3 goals at home against newcastle so they could easily concede 4 or more at the Etihad
-Aguero pretty much back to 100% fitness
-After almost scoring against Chelsea he will be hungry for a goal after a mini-drought
-City in good spirits after a good performance against Chelsea
    -On pens

On wildcard and have 35m to spend on 5 defenders and 2 goalkeepers. Who would you go with?
    I have :
    Forster, Krul,
Bellerin, Terry, Wisdom, Fonts, Van Aanholt.
Problem is all these play away this week except Krul so I could do with some advice.
