Our Watchlist rankings, which offer player recommendations over the next four to six Gameweeks, have been updated over the last 24 hours. Arsenal’s midfield play a major part in our thinking, whilst the suspension-free Diego Costa and Gylfi Sigurdsson are back in the mix after completing three-match bans.

The Defence

West Brom’s Ben Foster rises to the top of the keeper standings. The Baggies have collected three clean sheets in five under Tony Pulis and now face Sunderland, Villa, Stoke and QPR in the next six to maintain their recent resilience. With Andre Wisdom and Chris Baird dropping out of the starting XI in recent weeks, there are fewer clear-cut budget options in the back-four at the Hawthorns.

Sunderland’s Costel Pantilimon drops to second in the keepers bracket, with team-mate Patrick van Aanholt, at 4.3, offering a cheaper route into the Black Cats’ backline. Gus Poyet’s side have three kind home fixtures (WBA, AVL, NEW) and a trip to Hull in the upcoming six and remain in the frame, despite their poor last couple of displays.

Arsenal’s David Ospina settles in third. The South American now looks cemented as Arsene Wenger’s preferred stopper and, at 4.8, has upcoming clashes against Palace, Everton, QPR, West Ham and Newcastle to profit from. With Hector Bellerin’s goal threat and cheaper price (4.6) as an alternative, though, Ospina’s appeal is somewhat dented.

Both Hugo Lloris and Rob Green climb as a double Gameweek option. According to our fixture ticker, QPR are ranked third for clean sheet potential over the next six – in addition to their pair of home clashes with Arsenal and Spurs in Gameweek 28, the R’s are also up against Hull, Palace, Everton and West Brom. Even if he concedes, the 4.5-priced Green is sure to be kept busy – he’s made more saves than any other keeper so far.

In defence, there’s no real movement near the summit. Branislav Ivanovic keeps his top-three spot behind Bellerin and Van Aanholt, with Nathaniel Clyne sitting in fourth. Chelsea and Southampton have now earned 12 clean sheets apiece, whilst Ivanovic has now served up four sets of attacking returns in his last six appearances.

Joleon Lescott climbs into fifth with a lack of competition for secure starts in the Baggies backline. Over the last four Gameweeks, his goal threat is ranked second for defenders.

Villa’s Alan Hutton moves up slightly due to some kind fixtures. Tim Sherwood opens his tenure at the Midlands club with a promising run (STO, new, WBA, sun, SWA), and at 4.4, Hutton has been a secure pick so far. Given that Hutton is just two yellows short of a suspension, team-mate Ron Vlaar (4.3) could be a safer alternative, though much depends on Sherwood’s tactics as to how we asses the pair.

Liverpool’s Alberto Moreno crashes up the rankings in his wing-back role. Granted, the Reds don’t have the best of fixtures but as we pointed out in this week’s Big Numbers article, his attacking potential has been on the up in recent matches.

Leighton Baines is expected to recover from a slight injury in time for the weekend home clash against Leicester. The left-back produced points in four of his last five before picking up a knee problem, and with the Toffees conceding once in their previous four now, there’s reason for optimism bearing in mind that Baines is also set to face Stoke, Newcastle and QPR in the next five.

Further down, Danny Rose is a somewhat reluctant pick. With a double Gameweek to come, though, his 4.8 price tag, allied with a goal and three assists, makes him our favoured Tottenham backline option.

The Midfield

Alexis Sanchez climbs back to second, although he’s struggling to see off the claims from in-form Mesut Ozil, who ousts Santi Cazorla in our Watchlist as the second choice for those opting to double up on Arsenal assets. Theo Walcott may well be a factor in coming weeks as he progresses – for now, though, his lack of guaranteed starts goes against him.

Sadio Mane and David Silva both hold with strong fixtures. The former has netted in four of his last five starts and squares up to West Brom, Palace and Burnley in the next five – at 6.6, he’s our favoured mid-price option right now. With Yaya Toure back on board for City, it remains to be seen whether Silva will remain quite so high in our thinking – the Ivorian netted four times in his last five appearances before heading to the Africa Cup of Nations.

Raheem Sterling falters due to injury concerns, whilst Christian Eriksen’s stock takes a hit given his forthcoming blank – the Spurs man will climb dramatically for the double Gameweek, though.

Gylfi Sigurdsson returns to contention after serving out his three-match ban. Now down to 6.4, he looks vital to the Swans’ prospects ahead of some mixed fixtures (MUN, bur, tot, LIV, avl, HUL). Stoke’s Jon Walters and Villa’s Carles Gil are both slight injury concerns but offer budget options in the centre of the park with decent form and fixtures to follow.

The Forwards

The top three hold steady, though Olivier Giroud’s stock took a slight dent after he was rotated in the Gameweek 25 home win over Leicester. The Arsenal frontman may well suffer a drop in the coming weeks as Daniel Sturridge and Diego Costa threaten a reshuffle. The Gameweek 27 blank keeps Costa out of the top three, although it’s also worth bearing in mind that he is just two yellows from a two-match ban.

Saido Berahino and Christian Benteke are the big risers. Certainly, the latter is speculative off the back of an anticipated Villa recovery under Tim Sherwood, with those above-mentioned fixtures in mind. Berahino’s seven goals in eight appearances in all competitions under Tony Pulis underlines his flourishing recent displays – at just 5.5, he is on penalties and is cheaper than strike partner Brown Ideye.

Further down, Charlie Austin and Jermain Defoe simmer in the lower ranks as both head into the weekend with injury concerns hanging over them.

I thought I would take this DZ opportunity to ask you fine folk about STATS.

Obviously as FPLers, we take a lot of stats into consideration, but how heavily do you weight them when casually discussing football?

For example, a friend of mine told me he preferred Carrick in the holding role to Blind (I of course preferred the opposite otherwise this story would end here). He didn't say why so I added that Blind makes more tackles, contests balls (and wins them) in the air more often, and recovers more loose balls. Beyond that he also creates more chances. My friend's only response? "I am not a stat only guy." and no further elaboration..

Obviously there is a big subjective element to football that numbers can't capture, but on the flipside there ARE very definable qualities (such as the ones above) that clear up the gray area and I feel that only fools discount them (in any capacity). By that same token, I would also agree that only fools look ONLY to stats..

When comparing individual players, hardly at all. I like looking at team stats and how many chances they're creating/conceding to get a sense for how a match went if I haven't seen it. But for analyzing individual players I'm not sure we have the right stats to really say which players are better/worse. The Carrick/Blind example you give is an example of that. Most of those stats you list just show that Blind is a more active player, but I'm not sure that makes him a better player than Carrick.

well it also perhaps highlights that Blind is a DM whereas Carrick is simply a deep-lying playmaker

(btw the discussion was about the players in a DM role, hence why I brought those stats in)

Blind is a very solid and quality player and 9 years younger than Carrick. I know you love Carrick and I too think he's the player that gives us balance in midfield but relax a tiny bit 😉

But seriously the overrating of Blind is getting a bit silly now. He's popped up with a couple of goals which is nice but he's looked very ropey and very clumsy.

                ropey?

idk, he dribbles well and passes well..my gripe with him is that he plays VERY safe passes (like Carrick 3-4 years ago; all sideways and backwards), which at times has value but not always when we need to get an attack going quickly

His positioning. He's all over the place. He's supposed to be protecting the back four, FFS. The reason your beloved stats don't show Carrick making as many tackles is because he doesn't have to. He intercepts or turns dangerous attacks away. He's also less athletic than Carrick, which is a very damning statement.

I'll play some of that off to team chemistry, some of it off to regularly changing position in a regularly changing formation..

I do think Carrick is def better, but Carrick is also just out of his prime (maybe somewhat still in) and VERY comfortable with the league and has been at the clubs ages

I would wager that he'll never be a proper DM as defending isn't something players seem to learn late on. You're either a natural defender or you aren't. And he simply isn't. If he had more about him athletically I might be a bit more optimistic but alas that's not the case.

Stats are important when determining the better performer. They should be taken with a pinch of salt if it's only a slight difference 5-10% but if someone's stats are significantly better then that needs to be taken into account for sure.

From an FPL perspective stats are important if you want to win FPL or finish with a very high rank. Then again FPL is also Kent to be fun and some might suggest a reliance on stats might take away some of the fun element. Stats are ultimately boring so I can understand that perspective.

I might be in the minority but I heavily look at stats. The reason I got onto Yaya early before his brief purple patch and Eriksen last year before his crazy run of form around christmas was through monitoring where they were playing on the pitch and how many shots per game were take, where those shots landed and how many key passes were created and completed...amongst other categories. Obviously watching matches and having hunches is a great way to think of players in your own minds but statistics also help in having a final say and having something to fall back on should it not work out "but the number said so" that will comfort you after a disappointment

Some people on this site pick out some next level stats but I don't take them into consideration. I just pick players with form and fixtures. And when taking punts I pick players who are starting to pick up form despite not scoring/assisting for a while.

I had a hot topic on stats early this season. It got +60 upvotes but ultimately it led to a lot of controversy. I posted it whilst drunk (not unusual for me) but it seemed to hit a nerve.

I think this game is played by two types of (serious) players. The on'e that use all the relevant stats and perform well consistently (and often are the very players that have high HOF ratings)
and the one's that don't rely as heavily on stats and prefer to go with the gut.

I am in the latter camp and like to pick players I "like" the look of from simply watching matches. I love picking players like Bolasie and Mahrez simply because when they're in my team I enjoy watching those matches more. More often than not, that means less FPL points as the Stats watchers will have picked an Oscar or a Nasri ( a less favourable player but from a bigger team).

I think what I'm trying to say, is this. My FPL/ HoF record is pretty poor compared to others even though I've been playing for a fair long time. But... I never lose sight of the fun of the game and thus probably sacrifice better finishes. ( I did Giroud -> Gomis last GW 😳 ) for the the thrill of watching games I would never have watched before discovering FPL.

I will always play like that. Good luck to those that don't and rely on stats, all power to them. The only reason I plough on is for the random fun of an Alan Hutton goal that was never highlighted by any stats table in this universe or the next 🙂

I think the opposite is true, that stats junkies would be more likely to pick a Taarabt while those that watch games will spot a Ramsey or Yaya who play deep, don't have too many goal attempts but always get into good positions and are involved in higher quality build up play.

I didn't own Ramsey or Yaya much last season but I don't look at stats either o_O

You are most likely correct 🙂
I never owned Ramsey last season and only got Yaya for that (captain) hat trick around GW 30 ish. I've know idea who I had instead for all those GWs. It was someone or other not performing... but I never went with the stats... much to my detrement.

I reckon stats are almost as important as watching the player actually play, and both are more important than the points history of the player.

If you can actually watch all of the games and look at everybody's form, that's the best option, imo. Though there is some risk of getting biased due to 'flair' rather than fantasy potential.

Stats can be a proxy for actually watching all of the games, but you run the risk of 'overfitting', or seeing the wrong patterns in data. eg. Balotelli when he started was getting tons of shots, but watching the games he would more often than not just run out of ideas and shoot.

But stats are a much better indicator than the points history alone, I reckon. The fact that a player scored 15 last week doesn't in itself make them more likely to do well this week. But if their underlying form/class/stats are good (which is often the reason for the high score), then it does.

I have never been a member of this site and therefore use stats very rarely. However I often see posters on here put up interesting stats and I have based close calls on them. I have a bunch of top 50k finishes but never top 10k. I plan to become a member for next season, fully dive into the stats, and am hoping this will push me on to become a regular top 10k player.

Reading above of course there are examples of fpl players who do well using stats and do well without.

I rely on stats more than I would like as a substitute for not having time to watch every game. No doubt regularly watching a player live gives an edge.

Stats, highlights and 2nd hand reports all work together for me as a substitute.

So what I am saying is unless you are watching 3+ games a week live, you will struggle to get the insight you need without having all 3 of those. The highlights show snippets of the quality of what, the player can do, the stats show how regularly they are getting and creating these opportunities and 2nd hand reports help eliminate your misinterpretations.

Stats simply gives us more insight and a deeper understanding of game/situation, IMO. They are reliable in the sense that we tend to see things as we want, and in general view games subjectively. Statistical analysis at least gives us a chance to take another look at what happened in the game and come up with a better understanding. There are things we miss in game that most aren't capable of keeping track. They don't hinder the game at all, everything should be looked at with relative balance, IMO. People are susceptible to biases and any significant event can be missed, stats simply ease the transition and can either validate your insight or nullify your opinion on said player/situation.

To spare you an essay , there's a lot you can do with statistics, and it makes football far more interesting. It's just an objective way in trying to understand the game better than we do now.

I remember a few years back a certain Jonathan Woodgate at his prime. Similar to a Franco Baresi or Matthias Sammer, hardly any tackling or blocking required as he reads the game beautifully and gets to the ball ahead of the opposing attackers.

On the FPL side of things. I've definitely I've found that a mixture of stats and watching matches to be the best.

If I could only use one, I would watch the matches.
Nobody has yet developed a complete model that fully captures all aspects of a player's performance.

As one example of this, currently stats don't account for positions a player is in when they don't touch the ball. Off the ball movement, space creation, and other difficult to quantify metrics are simply a HUGE part of football.

Again, it's not worth arguing with people over, do what makes you happy 🙂

I like stats, use them a lot in my decisions but am aware of the anomalies that can become killers if you ignore them…..such as Yaya and Ramsey last season. This season you have the opposite affect with Pelle, great stats on the surface but a problem once you dig deeper.

They key is a good mix of Stats Vs Feelings.

Stats, used intelligently, are the single best tool available to an FPL player. Nothing else comes close.

The statistics that are remarkably underused and are readily available are player histories. You can get a real sense about a player's probable outcomes over time by looking at his history. Eriksen this year, for instance, was an easy option as was Sigurdsson - simply based on history. I would suggest anyone looking at a transfer for a player, which they expect to be in the side for a while, check that player's prior history.

Well when a club is owned by such, has backed their captain through such and attempted to ruin a referee through the abuse of such it's a rather obvious observation innit.

But it's not the fans we're talking about. It's the club, top to bottom. Do you think Terry would still be captain of Manchester United had he done the same whilst playing for us?

Honestly, unless a given club has demonstrated a track record of getting rid of one of their proven leaders on the basis of such issues, then I think it really remains unknown what they will do.

Always easy to think that your squad will do the right thing.

Clubs have gotten rid of managers and backroom staff for much less so I don't think it's so presumptuous myself. Has another club behaved themselves as Chelsea have? That's the question we should be asking.

Very difficult. If you are content on keeping the 352 then I guess you could just get rid of whichever midfielder you like least for someone different. If not, figure out which striker you want in for Ayoze and downgrade a midfielder accordingly with that in mind.

The real crux of the matter with stats and football is unless you actually watch a match with a knowledge of both teams' levels you have nothing really. There are so many variables from player to player, performance to performance and the ole luck of the draw factor that it's really quite pointless.

Long time indeed! Had a dip in FPL interest, so not been around much, but good form after Jan wild card so now the goal is the avoid relegation from LAWR #1. I'm currently rock bottom, with the form of the 2008 Derby County, but let's see if I can do a 'Arry 'Oudini-esque escape.

Back in Tokyo after two months back home. But yes, I'm still here, but the segregationist mentality is driving me away slowly.

Yourself? What's keeping you here? Family, career, the food, the fun?

Gaz. Yes, I lost interest in FPL after New Year as well. I think it's the schedule over the holidays with so many games in a short time I just felt tired of it once we got into January. The stop-start nature of this time of the season doesn't help either - I enjoy autumn where we have a regular programme and can get into a rhythm.

Well, I like the food, my job ( or parts of it ) and have family but I feel the crackpots are on the march again and it's all going to end badly. When I'm away I barely even think about the place. It's all a bit depressing, isn't it.

Not sure on Sakho tbh, I'd prefer Cisse for Gw27 Zan

I have tried to keep away from this feeling as know karma will bite me and wishing mis fortunate on others is just not me. But. I must admit, it does feel pretty sweet seeing my closest rival with some many yellow flags

Solid player for the price but with competition from Beri and an alternative in Kane has me steered clear

Anyone expecting Yaya to be hitting big this weekend or will I stay put on Caz

May do Defoe + Cazorla > Ideye + Yaya

What's all the noise on Defoe, is he likely out for the weekend?

      A) Sterling and Sanchez (3-5-2)

      B) Sturridge and Ozil (3-4-3)

        B. Sturridge will score plenty against anyone. Sterling's a good choice but Sturridge is far more clinical and will outscore him.

So is this Di Maria injury make believe? I can't see anything on the UTD website and the FPL site has nothing on him?
