Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 26 – Sunday

In today’s Scout Notes, a talented Saints winger receives the scorn of boss Ronald Koeman, Tottenham’s man of the moment continues his exceptional run and Everton’s record signing falls short once more. Elsewhere, Liverpool’s defence holds firm as they chase a top-four berth.

Kane the Spurs saviour

He may have left it uncomfortably late, but Harry Kane was once again on target for Tottenham as they clawed back a 2-0 deficit to secure a draw against West Ham. The 21-year-old striker has now netted 12 times in his last 11 league outings following a last-minute spot-kick at White Hart Lane, with only Sergio Aguero and Diego Costa (17 apiece) boasting a superior output than the English striker’s 14 this term.

With one eye on the Capital One Cup final and the midweek Europa League tie at Fiorentina, Mauricio Pochettino opted to rest Christian Eriksen, switching Erik Lamela to the left flank as Andros Townsend provided width on the right. Mousa Dembele – who’d piqued our interest recently with one goal and two assists in his last three matches – flattered to deceive in the first half and was replaced by the Danish playmaker at the break. Roberto Soldado’s introduction in the final 30 minutes instigated a formation change, with Kane dropping in behind the Spanish marksman in a 4-4-1-1 set-up.

The north Londoners now enter a blank Gameweek 27 before compensating with a double Gameweek in Gameweek 28 (SWA, qpr). Kane and Eriksen remain the frontrunners in terms of viable Tottenham coverage during that period, with no clear candidates emerging for that third berth. Danny Rose’s strike took his tally to two goals and three assists for the season, though, and at 4.8, he looks the value route into the Spurs backline right now. Looking beyond the double, the Lilywhites’ schedule (mun, LEI, bur, AVL, new) sees them match-up against the current bottom-three Premier League outfits, strengthening the long-term investment potential of Tottenham’s attacking contingent.

Kouyate’s scoring streak continues

With three goals in his last five league appearances against high-calibre opposition (tot, MUN, ARS), Cheikhou Kouyate is defying his modest 4.9 price tag. The rangy midfield general demonstrated his finishing prowess with a towering header in the first quarter of the Hammers’ match against Spurs, turning in a cross from full-back Aaron Cresswell. Diafra Sakho supplemented the Senegal international’s strike with one of his own, notching his second goal in four outings for Sam Allardyce’s side.

Fit-again Winston Reid partnered James Tomkins in West Ham’s central defence having returned to full fitness, while James Collins replaced substitute Carlton Cole late on. The Irons’ back line certainly has its hands full in the upcoming weeks, with another three consecutive London derbies (CRY, CHE, ars) on the horizon. With Sunderland, Leicester and Stoke also in the next six, Stewart Downing’s 28% owners will be desperate for a return to form. Fielded on the right of a 4-3-3 yesterday, his blank means he’s now managed just a goal and assist in his last nine.

Lukaku spurns his chances

In the wake of another frustrating afternoon at Goodison Park, Romelu Lukaku has now only mustered one goal in his previous 12 league outings for Everton. A hat-trick in the Toffees’ midweek Europa League tie seemed to augur an upturn in form for the physical Belgian frontman, yet he failed to force a save out of Leicester goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer in any of his nine attempts at goal. The big Belgian still managed to pick up a pair of assists, however, whilst fellow forward Steven Naismith opened the scoring with his second goal in six league matches, but Everton were unable to register their first home win since Gameweek 16.

Elsewhere, Leighton Baines replaced stand-in left-back Bryan Oviedo on his return from injury, while Aaron Lennon was reinstated in the starting line-up having been cup-tied for Everton’s 4-1 victory over BSC Young Boys. Tim Howard turned in a poor display between the posts which may give Roberto Martinez food for thought – the Toffees had registered three successive clean sheets with Joel Robles in goal prior to the US international’s return to the fray in Gameweek 25.

Leicester snap run of defeats

Leicester City exhibited signs of recovery in their closely contested draw with Everton. Nigel Pearson’s side broke a run of four defeats as Serie A veteran Esteban Cambiasso and David Nugent both tallied their third goals of the league campaign. Once again, Pearson kept faith in the new 5-4-1 formation, with Matthew Upson, Wes Morgan and Robert Huth fielded at centre-half, much to the detriment of Marcin Wasilewski’s 5% ownership. With no fixture this weekend and trips to City and Spurs in the upcoming four rounds of fixtures, it’s fair to say that few will be eyeing up the Foxes’ main men for now, though the schedule does take a turn for the better around the Gameweek 31 mark in the lead up to their Gameweek 34 double.

Liverpool’s resolute defence

Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over Southampton in the final fixture of Gameweek 26 marked the Merseyside outfit’s fifth clean sheet in their last six outings. Furthermore, it’s the first time since 1985 that the Reds have recorded five consecutive shut-outs on the road.

Former Saints centre-back Dejan Lovren earned his first start of the year as he came in for the injured Mamadou Sakho, who needs a scan to assess the severity of his hip complaint. Jordan Ibe was fielded at right wing-back and Lazar Markovic at left wing-back in Brendan Rodgers’ 3-4-2-1 formation, leaving no room for Alberto Moreno in the starting line-up – the Spaniard was omitted from the XI for the first time since Gameweek 18.

Philippe Coutinho’s superb opener helped the Brazilian to his second double-figure return in the last four, whilst Raheem Sterling’s goal means he has now scored or assisted in five of his last seven league appearances. Elsewhere, Daniel Sturridge was only fit enough for a second-half cameo, having started both of the Reds’ previous two matches over the last eight days, with Rodgers clearly keen not to over-utilise his star forward.

Mane benched for tardiness

According to Saints boss Ronald Koeman, winger Sadio Mane was supposed to start at St Mary’s Stadium but was dropped to the bench as punishment for turning up late to the stadium. In his place, January loan-signing Filip Djuricic made his first start for the Hampshire club. Given that Graziano Pelle extended his goalless streak to nine appearances, having not scored since 20 December at home to Everton, it’s fair to expect that Mane will be reinstated to the first XI as Koeman attempts to address a run which has seen his side score once in the last four Gameweeks.

Elsewhere, the 3.9-priced Matt Targett was handed a start at left-back after recovering from a head knock, while Morgan Schneiderlin clocked 45 second-half minutes as he stepped up his return to action. With Ryan Bertrand now available again, though, after serving out his three-match suspension, Targett looks set to return to bench-warming duties.

City have to play full strength in midweek, Liverpool rest up, away from home, Liverpool in excellent form. I don't see it at all.

I too think Liverpool will manage to win, but away to Besiktas is by no means an easy match. Rodgers won't risk resting too many core players. The only one I can see starting on the bench is Coutinho

I'll be pondering this as the main issue this week. 😛 When we have a starting 11 though, how many times will all of your back 3 actually contribute good point returns. Not very often imo.

Indeed JTG, sorta playing devils advocate tbh......Increasing your chances of a good return i.e. more than a two pointer, with the defensive issues i have and possible options available considering the blank makes this a key decision this week. Esp with the double to follow. is the potential ceiling for good returns higher for a player that plays in the blank or a dgw player for the week after in your opinion ❓

Posted on last page of previous article, would like some more thoughts on whether it's the right time to sell Chelsea defenders (maybe not Ivan though)

Everyone with 2 FTs are focused on selling PVA/Wisdom but finding that there's nothing much at that price bracket. Why not Terry/Azpi/Cahill > Bert/Fonte with one FT, and free up some more cash to fix Wisdom/PVA next week with 2 FTs?

Chelsea have to navigate a blank + 2 tricky fixtures (West Ham and Southampton) without Matic, who we all know is quite key to their defensive shape. Meanwhile SOT have wba, CPL in the next 2. CHE defender could come back in GW30.

But I guess you'd want a Chelsea defender long term so maybe keeping is the conservative/logical strategy? Thoughts?

GW30/31 could be a good re-entry time for them, maybe Terry will drop 0.1 by then who knows? But not fussed about losing 0.3 on Terry...have gained plenty in terms of points from him.

Majority of my rivals will be too conservative to pursue this route - might blow up in my face...but i'll take the risk.

I'm ditching Azpi this week > Bertrand, mainly so I can field a strong defence this GW.
      But keeping Zouma and Hazard.

I think Chelsea are always good for a clean sheet with Mourinho in charge.
Matic out will just mean Ramires and Fab will play holding, both are capable of protecting the back four of Chelsea.

I'm just sticking with him. Seems like a wasted transfer for anyone else at that price range. With Chelsea and Spurs blanking, and City playing Liverpool, the only defenders I "fear" not owning are Southampton assets or Jones.

2 FTs, but have 4 out of favour players: Cahill, Baird, PVA, Albrighton 😯

Currently only have 8 playing in GW 27 assuming Baird, PVA dont play 🙁

    Best moves then ?

A Cahill, Baird to Bertrand, Dawson
B Cahill, Albrighton to Bertrand, Moses/Mane

B seems to have more upside, but am I right that A is better for long term? Playing Moses/Mane for 1 GW seems to be a waste and I might need to take him out in the future for cash reasons (rarely utilized 5th midfielder)

it is very weird, both have 2 games but yet people are adament a dgw player is better

for me spurs players are rotation risks with the fixtures, the only other player of note is austin

that would involve ft/hit on defender to field 11 , which is not the same as having double gw players who play as strikers/midfielders

How would you improve this team?

    Foster
    PVA* | Clyne | Bellerin* | Naughton
    Silva | Cazorla | Walters| Sanchez
    Aguero | Defoe

    Krul | Terry | Kane | Hazard

Liverpool and Man City have plum fixtures in the DGW so looking at losing Caz or Sanchez. I'd probably prefer to keep them than get Erik.

Here's an attempt at showing the general thoughts for this gameweek:

    - I will not sell Kane ahead of GW28, so I must play with 2 strikers
    - I will not sell Hazard, so I must play with 4 midfielders

This is why we are all looking at our defenders and concluding that using a transfer for a 'nailed on' 4.2 defender is likely to be a waste i.e. 2 points max.

Best save the FT for a DGW that COULD BE far more fruitful.

    Have I got that right?

would you sell a CHE defender if he had a one game suspension + 2 tricky games without a key player for their defensive shape?

Could be swapped for Fonte/Clyne who have wba, CPL, BUR in the next 4. Meanwhile, ADM>Eriksen would give plenty of coin for Wisdom/PVA > CHE defender again. Just some thoughts

            Fair point.

If you have no pressing concerns and you fancy making the change, then go for it.

I think the key for me is not making a transfer that is based on one gameweek. Needs to have greater longevity than that.

            But I'm no expert 🙂

      Depends,
      I've PVA/Wisdom/Marney so I can't field 11 without a hit.
I'm taking a -4 to clear the deadwood and field 11,
Take 1 gw at a time IMO.

My rival has taken each GW at a time, and he potentially faces just 7 starting players this week.

Agree with long term planning but I don't see why guys are ignoring 'potential points' this week, granted a dgw on the horizon Kane/Erik maybe Austin so that's only a -4 for me as things stand but there are still good fixtures this week to concentrate in.

            • 9 Years

What potential points are being ignored?

For me, at worst I am ignoring Southampton away at West Brom. Hardly a nailed on clean sheet.

If you put it like that you could argue that Kane/Eriksen/Rose/Austin are only all potential points too.
Saving that transfer this week may only result in a 4pt return in a dgw. There is no guarantee of points but normally having 11 players help.
All I'm saying if your short this week to get 11 out I wouldn't ignore this and hope to make up ground in the dgw.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    The imperfect ten.

Is it worth taking a hit or even using both transfers if you have two, to field 11 players in Gameweek 27?

Will a cheap defender really get dramatically more than the likes of Wisdom, Baird or Cameron. For the sake of getting maybe 1 pt return is it not better to field 10 players and focus on the double gameweek the next week?

    1. Jaffalicious! #SomosCubanos

If you use a transfer or take a hit to replace someone like Baird it should be for the long term.

I think the answer is no, it's not worth the hit or using your transfers...

BUT - it does depend on your priorities.

For me, my rival has a best case scenario of 8 players playing (without hits), including one up front, so my 10/11 players don't seem so bad.

Focus on dgw , obvious to me . Having Haz and Kane with their tied values(most people as well) , to field 11 this week you need to do transfer on defenders . Clearly saving transfers for mid/strikers are better than for defenders .

      1. Eze Really?
        • 10 Years

Kane I agree. Got him at 4.8 so cannot ditch him for a week anyway.
Hazard a different story. Bought him 10.5 so I will lose .2 and get a decent mid. So I only have to play 3 defenders.

Depends if it's in a position where you can will want a DGWer next week. If it's not then it's spending a transfer or a hit on removing a complete deadweight that could be stinking out your team for weeks to come with minimal downside.

It's a daft argument...To make it simple for folk.

Save an FT and start with 10 this week plus 11 next week and 2 DGW players making 13 starters next week= 23 players over two weeks

Do a transfer this week so 11 start plus just 1 DGW transfer next week. Making 12 starters =23 starters over two weeks.

      It's the same.

Not quite though. The options available this week are quite poor, especially from a defensive POV so it perhaps makes more sense to save the 2nd transfer for the DGW and play with 10.

I have 2 FT, only using one to swap Albrighton for another cheap mid and saving the other. I've PVA plays I will have 11. Feel like I'm in a pretty good spot; and well set up for DGW

points potential is limited for defenders as we all know. If you're a defender down it might actually be better to save the transfer and spend it next week.

Alternatively its probably best to look at the must haves for this week, but other than Arsenal i think its slim pickings this gameweek - low average quite likely.

Bellerin and PVA 'rotation' has really messed things up - one of these may well have to go with 1FT to just get 10 out. Not sure which yet but I have my eye on a decent cheap replacement.

I have serious defensive issue in my team mates with PVA and Cameron.
So very enticed to use my FT, but I'll try to control that urge the best I can.

      DGW is coming ! 🙂

Pellegrini is so backwards tactically it's beyond belief.

Won title in first season while Mourinho finished 3rd..for now Pellegrini is better than Mourinho in PL(entertains audience and competes for the league title too).

      1. Mourinho (by some margin imo)
      2. Wenger
      3. Pulis (not sure how he'd do with a top team, but knows how to survive in the bpl)
      4. Pochettino (still new to the premier league, but very promising)
      5. Rodgers

Here's a big number....Crystal Palace recorded 63 touches in the box against Arsenal at the weekend...That's the highest of any team since Man City recorded 71 on the 1st Jan...

Things continue to be looking up at Palace.

Gutted Puncheon couldn't bag any points. Palace were all over them for long periods

Arsenals performances in the last few have been woeful - they are conceding so much possession. They have had quite a bit of luck imo

Didn't Palace score against Pool in the cup?
