Sergio Aguero nets City’s consolation as Barcelona grab a 2-1 Champions League first-leg advantage at the Etihad. Nemanja Matic’s suspension is reduced by the FA, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is back in full training for Arsenal, whilst the problems mount up front for United.

City duo shine again

Sergio Aguero and David Silva combined to claw a goal back for Manchester City in their 2-1 home defeat to La Liga giants Barcelona. The Spanish playmaker executed a deft flick into the path of the Sky Blues’ Argentine striker, who then lifted the ball across goal and beyond the reach of German shot-stopper Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

In terms of line-ups, Manuel Pellegrini once again rolled out a 4-4-2 formation, and with Yaya Toure suspended, handed James Milner a central midfield role as Edin Dzeko partnered Aguero up top. New boy Wilfried Bony earned 22 minutes off the bench as a replacement for the Bosnian, with Aguero afforded the full 90 minutes.

Pellegrini’s decision to opt for two up front came in for some criticism but after the match, the City boss cited the dismissal of Gael Clichy as the main reason for his side’s narrow loss and refuted suggestions his tactics handed the visitors an advantage:

“No, I am very happy with the way we played. It was the way we must play against Barcelona. Barcelona will always dominate in some parts of the game like the midfield. With the way we play, I think we can do it (qualify). It is important not to make the same mistakes. We cannot have a player sent off every game against Barcelona. But we have a chance. We must try to do it there. It is important for this team to continue in the Champions League as far as possible.”

The Scout Says: Barcelona dominated the first 45 minutes at the Etihad, cruising into a 2-0 lead courtesy of a Luis Suarez brace. It wasn’t until the second half that the Premier League outfit began to exercise some control, leading to the passage of play that Aguero finished off with aplomb. The former Atletico Madrid frontman – who’s now netted four times in his last three outings in all competitions – showed he can deliver the goods in the most testing of scenarios, illustrating his fixture-proof value ahead of a tough trip to Anfield this weekend. Likewise, Silva’s delightful assist – his third in as as many starts – underlines his sensational form of late, which could encourage a multitude of Fantasy managers to invest in the 9.5-priced midfielder ahead of Chelsea and Tottenham’s blank Gameweek 27.

Matic ban reduced

Nemanja Matic, who was dismissed in Chelsea’s 1-1 draw with Burnley on Saturday due to violent conduct, saw his three-match ban reduced by the FA to two fixtures following an appeal from the London club.

The Scout Says: In the only league match that Matic hasn’t started this campaign, Chelsea fell to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Newcastle United – their first loss of the season. With John Obi Mikel currently injured, Jose Mourinho’s options in defensive midfield look limited and it’s likely he’ll have to install Ramires in the double-pivot alongside Cesc Fabregas for the Capital One cup final and the trip to West Ham United in Gameweek 28.

Oxlade-Chamberlain close to return

Ahead of Arsenal’s Champions League clash against AS Monaco, Arsene Wenger revealed that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has returned to full training, while Jack Wilshire is being rested off the back of a recent heavy training schedule:

“The only uncertainty I have at the moment is Jack Wilshere but everybody else is available. He was rested [at training], because he trained hard until now. No, it’s not a setback but I don’t think [he’ll play against Monaco].”

The Scout Says: The return of Oxlade-Chamberlain (6.2 in FPL) increases the competition for places among an already stacked roster of wingers and playmakers. With Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil and Santi Cazorla looking difficult to even rotate right now, Oxlade-Chamberlain will now add competition to the midfield four which has already seen Theo Walcott and Danny Welbeck alternate in recent matches. Oxlade-Chamberlain’s reinstatement in the matchday squad casts further doubts over Walcott’s ability to secure regular playing time – despite scoring in each of his last two starts, the latter again dropped to the bench and was an unused substitute in last weekend’s tie against Crystal Palace. Walcott has yet to play two consecutive league matches since returning from long-term injury – a clear sign of the strength and depth that looks set to frustrate Fantasy managers once again.

Van Gaal’s depleted strike force

James Wilson picked up a knock playing for Manchester United’s reserves and will be assessed at the Red Devils’ Carrington training complex. Meanwhile, Robin van Persie – who left the Liberty Stadium on crutches last Saturday – is expected to sit out the next home clash against Sunderland.

The Scout Says: Wayne Rooney has primarily been deployed in a midfield three under Louis van Gaal’s stewardship, yet the recent fluctuating fitness of Van Persie and Radamel Falcao has seen the England international occupy a striker berth in the manager’s favoured 4-1-2-1-2 set-up. Rooney looks set to retain that role for the third successive match if his Dutch team-mate doesn’t recuperate in time, and with none of United’s strike force excelling, a dominant display from the 29-year-old against the Black Cats could prolong his spell up front. Although Wilson has played second fiddle to the more eminent forwards in United’s roster, his potential absence would serve to further reduce their attacking options off the bench and possibly persuade Van Gaal to utilise Marouane Fellaini in an advanced role again.

I would hold the WC for later and just go all out on DGW players. Then there'll be only 4 weeks left during which you would be stuck with a lop sided team. Fitting in the top three Chelsea options during that gw is more important I reckon.

I have Özil (and Cazorla) over Sanchez myself but the minute Sanchez gets back in the goals I'll be bringing him back in. You're team looks great. I wouldn't change anything except maybe Punch to Walters / Moses and PvA and Wasi out for other budget options (Yun, a Hull defender, etc.)

Maybe everyone should treat the 2022 World Cup in the same way as the AFCON always gets treated - allow players to go to the tournament but continue with domestic football at the same time. Clubs will just have to cope with missing a few players. Might drag a few clubs down to Newcastle's level for a few weeks if that happened. 😉

          At 2014 WC:

          Chelsea = 17 players
          Man U = 14
          Arsenal = 13
          Liverpool = 12
          Man City = 10
          Newcastle = 5
Burnley and West Ham = 0

By 2022, Newcastle will be owned by a Qatari billionaire and dominating world football though. And Villa will be in League Two that by then will be called League One as the current League One will be the Championship and that will be the Premier League and the Premier League will have been disbanded into a European Super divisions league with 3 tiers of 20 topped by Newcastle, Real Madrid, PSG and Dynamo Putin who will be the new name for Spartak Moscow.

That also presupposes all of the Netherlands, France, Cote D'Ivoire and Senegal would qualify and that those players would be called up. Plus we're playing without most of those already!

A few things. I played my Jan wildcard a week early and lost out on Costas big haul + a few injuries.

Had to sort out a few injuries using transfers (bert, wisdom, dummet) and didnt want to take hits so I missed out on some explosive points (ozil cazorla)

Then lost it and took two -8 hits in a row, missed out on silva points because I took him out.

Injuries were a bit unlucky, but I played my WC too early and got a bit frustrated 🙂 still top of my ML fortunately

Def is currently Clyne, Terry, Was, PVA, Hutton

    2 FTs

What to people think to Terry, Was, PVA > Bertrand, Naughton, Wollscheid for -4?

Can't play 11 unless I take a hit. Bench will be Kane, Austin, Hazard

Keep Terry ( play 10) then you could get Eriksen for DGW and have a lot of options for DGW.

Nah - just do PvA and Was to Dawson and Yun. No need to play 11. It's not as important in the long-term. You'll most probably get 2 from your defenders anyway.

I'm SERIOUSLY worried about this team.
I think it requires me playing my WC, which i suppose i'll do next week. However, it almost looks like it needs it this week. Would REALLY appreciate any advice:

    Krul
    Clichy Hutton PVA Haidara
    ADM Boyd Siggy Sanchez
    Defore Aguero

    Foster Hazard Terry Kane

Save that WC. Your team looks fine!

Maybe bring in someone for PvA unless you plan on buying two DGW players next week.

      Captain Aguero.

Struggling to make a decision. Have Giroud - Defoe - Aguero (I know no Kane don't mention it). I have exactly 0.3 in the bank for Defoe > Kane for the DGW.

However the issue is PVA as I only have 9 playing without him. Do I:

    A) PVA > Dawson meaning I have to take a hit to get Kane for the DGW
    B) Save and play 10 with PVA

    Thoughts would be great.

    Current side:

    Krul
    Jones - Trippier - Wisdom - PvA
    Sanchez - ADM - Mane - AJ
    Aguero - Giroud

    Panti; Kane, Hazard, Terry
    2FT + 0.2ITB

Plan is to do Wisdom > Dawson this week, then Trippier + ADM > Walker + Eriksen next week. Sound like a decent plan or is there something else I should be considering? Cheers 🙂

No idea pal. My rival is a ManU fan(he owns ADM) and (c) Kun last week, so my guess he will go for one of those two. I own Sanchez, while he owns Ozil.

Yeah, but Citeh with Yaya/Silva/Kun/Nasri is a different beast. Kun also better away from home?

Livp 5/6 CS in PL, BUT

2 of those were vs Sun and Villa, who are useless.
The one vs WHAM was when Sakho and Kouyate were missing
They conceded 2 at home vs Spurs(I think Citeh is far better than Spurs)
And face it, South were robbed vs Livp last week.

Add the fact that 20 goals have been scored in the last 5 Livp/Citeh games....

You raise some valid points. Kun is pretty much fixture proof, let's be honest. I will definitely be behind the couch watching livp if i don't captain Kun. I just see it as a rare week where there is no outstanding (c) choice and a possible opportunity to really climb the rankings with a differential (c). I really like Pappis this week.

Yeah, that's the thing. Massive strides can be made, probably much more than next week in the DGW.

Problem is, Im now second in my ML by 6 or so points, thanks to Ozil cleaning up and Alexis going of the boil. To make things worse ML leader bought Rose last week for his 10 pointer!

The case for Ibe. He's come. He's taken a starting berth. He hasn't lost it since. He's playing in a Position where only Markovic, G. Johnson can replace him. Johnson is sh*t and Markovic played on the left vs Soton. He came off at half time and was replaced by Moreno which means that before the game Ibe was ahead of Moreno in the pecking order and at half time he was ahead of Markovic (and probably still Moreno). I think he's pretty nailed in general. My only concern is that he'll play 90 Euroleague mins again and Rodgers might go with a more defensive minder set up vs Man City (picking Johnson or at least Moreno on the left side, which would mean that a fit Markovic - cupTied - could start on the right). EuroLeague seems like the only Problem though and I think, I'm gonna take a punt

But you perfectly describe why you shouldn't get him, he'll be used in the Europa League moreso in my opinion and Liverpool players can wait a week or two before investment.

    3. Davido989
      • 15 Years

He's not ahead of Moreno or Markovic in the pecking order. His chance came through injuries, and he has taken it well. In a way, it's his place to lose, but he's not nailed. With Europa, fa cup, premier league, he'll get his fair share of minutes through the competitions.

Markovic is suspended for tomorrow so you'd expect Ibe to play. But I think Markovic will play on Sunday, then Ibe back in for fa cup.

      The case against Ibe.

With Markovic suspended in Europe, he will likely play most league games.

Secondly, and most importantly imo, is there any need to gamble on Ibe? He's playing RWB and hasn't produced any attacking returns so far so it's not as if he's scoring unbelievably well. Especially given that you won't have many/any subs this week, is there any need to take such an unnecessary gamble? Will he really score any better than Boyd? I don't think so.

Even looking further forward, he'll be on your bench to cover injuries every week, so your main concern is whether he plays. Seems like an unnecessary worry to me.

Talking about 5th defender here, so most important to get someone cheap that plays at least GW27 and then some

So the AFCON in 2022 is being moved to June, in order to accommodate the World Cup in November.

Ironic that the AFCON finally gets the scheduling that all Premier League managers want, only for the WC to completely decimate squads during the same period anyway, and then all the Africans will miss pre-season too.

FIFA delivering a huge 'be careful what you wish for'. Our children and grandchildren will be grateful it's only African FPL options they lose during post-2022 winters.

I really, really hope I'm not still playing it then! But I will probably have a season off and then come back for 2 or 3. It's too hard to stay away from.

Is it really worth Getting in Austin? Especially for a on form striker like Giroud?

Will Austin really get more points over 2 compared to an in form Giroud over 1?

Not necessarily with Austin's fixtures no.

But two chances ARE better than one.

It's not worth a hit, but its a flip of a coin otherwise.

Yea I dont think he is worth it especially for a hit with his fixtures. They are just terrible. He isn't really in form really either.

They are tough games he has, and the run isn't that kind after either. I'm not likely to bother, even when I have Defoe, who has much nicer games.

If Giroud gets benched against QPR, he can easily outscore him 😉

Players will still need to be rested around a busy period of Champions League, League, and FA Cup fixtures though. That's 4 games in the next 10 days for Arsenal, and they have Welbeck, Alexis and Wally who can also play up top. I wouldn't be at all surprised if there were a couple of big casualties for QPR.

          Against Leicester?
Too many fixtures and thats the easiest where he can be rested.

Got 2 FT's and need to get rid of Wisdom to be able to play a full XI this week.

    Who would you suggest?

    Team currently:

    Krul
    Fonte Kompany Bellerin WISDOM
    Sterling Silva Cazorla Boyd
    Agüero Defoe

    Subs: Pantilimon, Terry, Hazard, Kane

    2,3 ITB

Plan next week is to do Defoe => Austin and probably Cazorla to Eriksen (2FTs)

So back to my question: who would you get in for Wisdom?

Money really not an issue but it would feel stupid to spend any more on that defense even if I don't have any plans to use the extra funds next week either.

    Afternoon peeps, some advice please?

    Panti
    Hutton, Fonte, Bruce, Dawson
    Caz, Silva, Sanchez, Lucas
    Aguero, Giroud

    Kane, Haz, Terry

    A) Swap Lucas > Cork (Don't wanna spend anymore ££ on the 5th mid spot) and have 11 players playing
    B) Play with 10 players this GW meaning i have 2FT for DGW

Bear in mind they have the League Cup final to play first so injuries and suspensions could happen (expecially if the match is feisty, which I think is likely). I'm not making any transfers next GW until at least Sunday evening.
