Two games into the season and Chelsea have struggled to make much of an impression. Andre Villas-Boas’ side have dominated both their opening fixtures in terms of possession – 66% at Stoke followed by 67% at home to West Brom on Saturday evening – but it’s already obvious that in order to implement the new manager’s philosophy, more creativity in the key attacking areas is needed.

At present, both full-backs, Ashley Cole and Jose Bosingwa, have carried the game to Chelsea’s opponents more than any Blues player. Re-installed to the first-team this season, Bosingwa showed on Sunday that his attacking tendencies could be a vital component of Villas-Boas’ team over the 2011/12 season and with a Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price of 5.5 in comparison to Cole’s 7.5, will likely rocket in Fantasy ownership if he continues in the same vein.

Both players have picked up the maximum 3 Bonus Points in each of Chelsea’s first two games- Cole in Gameweek 1 and Bosingwa in Gameweek 2- and with that in mind, here’s some analysis on the pair’s respective performances at Stamford Bridge against the Baggies:

Cole and Bosingwa versus West Brom

A look at the Chelsea average position map from the Baggies game highlights just how far forward Cole (3) and Bosingwa (17) played- the pair were almost as high up the pitch in possession as Frank Lampard (8) and Ramires (7) and both saw far more of the ball.

Bosingwa, in particular, was a real stand-out against Roy Hodgson’s side. He made 102 passes, more than any other player this Gameweek and with 68% of his distribution in the opposition half, he carries a significant threat going forward for Chelsea. Cole made 73 passes, a substantial drop in comparison, with 70% coming in the Baggies half.

Lampard and Ramires Passing

Much of this difference in the number of passes each full-back made can be attributed to the midfielders on either side of John Obi Mikel. When the ball went left, Cole had Frank Lampard to contend with for possession whereas on the right, Bosingwa had Ramires. Lampard was far more willing to take on responsibility and make things happen- Cole made 16 passes to Lampard but received 8 in return.

On the other flank, Bosingwa passed to Ramires 13 times and received 11 in return- a far more even ratio. Lampard made a total of 70 passes to Ramires’ 45- clearly, when the ball went right, Bosingwa was far more liable to be the player in possession and as a result, created the assist for Florent Malouda’s winner.

Narrow Baggies
For as much as the Chelsea full-backs were impressive going forward, West Brom’s lack of width was noticeable on Saturday evening and summed up Roy Hodgson’s savvy tactics. A look at the average position map show the two midfield wide men, Chris Brunt (11) and James Morrison (7) stayed narrow and with both central midfielders, Paul Scharner (33) and Youssuf Mulumbu (21) shielding the back-four, Villas-Boas’ side were unable to find a way through from central areas.

Aware of Chelsea’s lack of central cutting edge, Hodgson allowed Villas-Boas’ side the flanks, meaning Cole and Bosingwa bombed forward and left space at the back. When in possession West Brom hit 69 Long Balls for the hard-working front two, Shane Long and Somen Tchoyi , to chase into the space vacated- the ploy clearly worked as John Terry and Alex were troubled with the Baggies strikers’ movement throughout.

Though it’s early days in his stewardship, it’s clear Villas-Boas is still searching for a better balance. There’s something of an air of predictability about the Blues right now and it’s a problem the new boss must solve if he’s to live up to the heady levels of expectancy so typical of the Roman Abramovich regime.

Last night’s news that the club have agreed a fee with Valencia for the services of Juan Mata represents a significant step forward in his rebuilding process. Someone with the ability to beat a man and unlock defences from the middle of the park will not only add a vital component to Chelsea’s play and bring Villas-Boas a step closer to his ideal line-up, it will perhaps prevent the likes of Hodgson setting his team out in such a stolid and stubborn manner.

Been looking at FISO and latest figures

Player Target NTI NTI (Today) NTI Yesterday
    Jarvis 79236 54807 29024 25k
    Silva5 79236 53419 26359 27k
    TaylorR 79236 51869 17699 34k
    Suarez 79236 46336 17378 29k
    Bosingwa79236 46024 24059 22k
    Long 79236 40454 14095 26k

I have read that inital threshold is usually around 30-35k at the start of the season so as none went up last night and Taylor was on 34k, reckon it must be 35k ish , this will mean that all the above will go up tonight or not ;o)

FISO shows the figures purely for today so as R Taylor has total NTI of 51869 and NTI is 17699 then yesterdays total would have been approx 34k

My dilemma is (with 1.5m in reserve):

    Torres > Rooney

OR downgrade Torres to a lesser Forward (I have Suarez and Bent)and upgrade Bent to Rooney when the fixtures turn in his favor. Bent is streaky so I dont mind selling him after the good run of AV fixtures.

I could downgrade Torres to one of the 6.5m type forwards. That gives me 6 million in the bank. Obviously my MF is the weakest, planning to play 4-3-3 most of the time using a rotation of 4 in the mf depending on fixtures. I am not sold on N'Zogbia right now (but I think he will come good). Hoolihan not playing last week was a concern too. I think perhaps stick with Torres for another week and if he doesnt so SFA against Norwich clearly he needs to go. I do think Rooney is going to score against Arsenal though.

    Given (Vorm)

Bosingwa, Kompany, R. Johnson, Simpson, Enrique

    Silva, N'Zogbia, Moses, Hoolihan, Brunt

    Torres, Bent, Suarez

El-Hadj Diouf can be controversial at the best of times, but does anyone else agree with this?

"Celtic against Rangers is 10 times better than Liverpool against Manchester United or something like that."

He also goes on to say The Old firm is the best in the world....the best.

And note he said "10 times better".

I don't think even he can be as stupid as saying that and referring to quality. He probably meant in some other way.

For me Liverpool vs Manchester United is a lousy rivalry too, as Liverpool have not been much competition for Manchester United in 20 years now, except for that weird season three years ago.

I agree there's a lot more grit and determination in the Old firm, and he does say it's like a war. But, you can't help but think El Classico, recently has been like a war too.

Nah. To each his own shit smells sweet, us against the Mackems was a big derby last week [for us] but not many outside of the North East would give too much of a hoot. Likewise the Liverpool v Everton derby is less hyped up outside of Scouseville than it was in the 1980's.
I honestly think that Scottish football has really lost the public imagination south of Hadrian's wall. The majority don't care any more who wins between Celtic and Rangers, whereas growing up in the 80's most people round my way supported one or the other as a 'second' team.
The media etc will hype the Manchester derby the most now, I think a lot of the hype and interest revolves around two local rivals competing at the top end. History seems to come second to chance of silverware at the moment.

Thinking about it, the idea that the interest in derbies is primarily generated by the sides chance of silverware is born out by the utter indifference to all the midland derbies. Birmingham v Wolves? Zzzzzzzzz

Birmingham is an easily overlooked place and often confused with the Black Country (Wolves, West Brom).

Interesting factoid: West Midlands music acts have sold more albums than acts from either Manchester or Liverpool.

I can't remember the last midlands side though that I liked watching play football. I used to like Steve Bull but for some reason never liked any of their sides, particularly Villa. No particular reason, just a natural aversion.

Actually, when Forest were outstandingly good under Clough (which I'm too young to recall) we were pretty defensive, masters of the 1-0.

The prettier and less successful football came in the late 80s/early 90s.

Yeah that's what I'm saying, it's all local rivalry. But the media/public take an interest in that rivalry its usually because the two teams are predominant in the competition. So not only are they playing a 90min match but they are challenging for the whole league. Sort of.
That's what I mean when I said that the Manchester Derby will suddenly become the most important, whereas it was the Liverpool v Everton derby in the 80's and Liverpool v Man Utd in the 1990's.

        Good post.

I still reckon both Newcastle v Sunderland and Birmingham v Wolves etc are better derbies because they're roughly doing equally well.

Both sides of fans should have a fair chance to believe that their side is genuinely the better one after a win, that's what gets me going.

I know Birmingham went down and all but Wolves have not been up for long either. For me the City v United derbies last season and also the CS showed really promising signs. That derby also has the classic intrigue of the team currently sitting on the throne against the newcomer.

This is a really interesting matter.

    Got this for GW3:
    Vorm (Given)
A.Cole, Kompany, Simpson (Hughes, De Laet)
    Moses, N'Zogbia, Yaya, Tarrabt (Surman)
    Torres, Aguero (V), Suarez (C)

1.5 in bank. Torres is out next week regardless of what happens vs Norwich. So any other changes needed or save for a double of Rooney/RVP/Bent and Brunt/Jarvis in. Moses is deadwood after this week so he can only go if I get Bent. Or do I downgrade N'Zog and get RVP/Rooney for GW4?

yaya > silva. just made that change myself. if not then probably wait and have the double transfer. in terms of who to take you should wait and see how they do this next week. rvp vs swansea looks good but I think arsenal still need at least a couple weeks to pick themselves up. and rvp won't be quite as good without nasri and cesc in midfield supplying him i don't think. up to you in the end though. good luck mate!

I would happily do Yaya-->Silva if Hernandez was fit. I am not sure on Bent even though their fixtures are good and may not be keen on 3villa. RVP was set in stone for Swansea but now not sure for reasons u say. I dont see any long term future for moses in my team so that may lead away from Rooney/RVP

Is it risky to have Downing,Suarez and Enrique.
Or are there better options out there for 8.5 or under.

Quite Liverpool heavy, I would probably go with Suarez and Enrique and look for another midfielder instead of Downing.

Here's to Nasri! May he have a great career at Man City following the big transfer! Just like Craig Bellamy, Santa Cruz, Sean Wright-Phillips, Jerome Boateng, and Shay Given!

I wont put Nasri in that group. Actually he was Ars best player last year. He went for money but he'll play IMO

          De Jong holding
Yaya and Nasri in the centre
Aguero and Silva on the flanks
          Dzeko/Tevez upfront

With Nasri, Silva and Aguero interchanging. It's pretty simple.

No he is because it is a completely different position i.e. not outfield and he is so much better in that position than the other players mentioned are in theirs

There's a difference between Nasri and four of the players you mentioned. He is a Mancini signing. The other obvious difference is Nasri can be world class.
