Injuries

The Treatment Table – Gameweek 28

With just one match remaining in the Gameweek, we take a look around the grounds to assess the latest batch of injuries sustained over the midweek fixtures.

Arsenal

Nacho Monreal and Wojciech Szczesny were both absent from the Gunners’ matchday squad at Loftus Road. The left-back is nursing a minor back strain, while the out-of-favour goalkeeper was suffering from illness. Meanwhile, Arsene Wenger predicts that Gabriel Paulista – who was subbed off against QPR with a hamstring injury – may well be missing for the next three weeks:

“It’s a hamstring. I don’t know, it’s bad enough to come off. It’s usually 21 days, not years.”

Burnley

Danny Ings was substituted late on against Liverpool because of an injury. The Clarets star pulled up unchallenged and limped off the field to be replaced by Lukas Jutkiewicz.

Chelsea

Nemanja Matic twisted his ankle celebrating the Blues’ Capital One Cup final triumph, but manager Jose Mourinho expects the Serbian international to be fit for their last-16 Champions League clash against Paris Saint-Germain:

“Matic got an injury celebrating the cup. It’s not a big injury, but if today he was not suspended, he wouldn’t play. He twisted his ankle – on the pitch. He put on shinpads, but he didn’t put the tape on. He will play against Paris. On Saturday, Sunday, he will train.”

QPR

Sandro lasted just 55 minutes on his returns to the R’s starting line-up following a lengthy layoff. QPR boss Chris Ramsey insisted it was a precaution and is confident the midfield general will be fit to face Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday:

“I’m hoping he’ll be fit. He came off more from a precaution point of view because he has a history of getting injured. He’s a wholehearted player who will play until he gets injured – and we need him.”

Similarly, Ramsey explained that Nedum Onuoha was removed from the field as a safety measure following his clash of heads with Steven Caulker:

“He has a gash on his eye and we didn’t want to take the risk. It was a blow to the head so we have to take that precaution.”

Stoke

Potters manager Mark Hughes revealed that Philipp Wollscheid tweaked his groin in the warm-up before the Everton clash, explaining why the German centre-back was substituted early on:

“We had to overcome the disappointment of losing Philipp in the opening minutes – he felt his groin in the warm-up. He gave it a go, but he’d lost power in his left leg, and in the end we had to take him off pretty quick. Geoff [Cameron] came in and did well, and we didn’t let that affect what we wanted to do and in the end deserved the victory.”

Swansea

Bafetimbi Gomis was quick to assuage any fears over his health after the Swans’ frontman collapsed on the pitch at White Hart Lane. The France international suffers from a vasovagal condition (low blood pressure) that caused him to faint three times in 2009 when playing for Lyon. Gomis attributed this recent incident to the stress associated with caring for his ill father:

“I wanted to reassure you concerning my health. It actually looks much scarier than it is physically dangerous, and I am feeling well now. I have been under a great deal of stress and fatigue due to my father’s health, which requires me to go back and forth from France.”

West Brom

Callum McManaman – who’s been absent for the Baggies in their last two league ties – is a doubt for West Brom’s FA  Cup quarter-final clash against Aston Villa on Saturday. Manager Tony Pulis said the 23-year-old had done some light training as he prepares for a return to action:

“Callum has done a little bit of work today but we’re not sure if he’ll be fit for Saturday. That’s been a little bit of a set-back for because we certainly need his trickery, especially at the back-end of games. It would have been nice to have brought him on on Tuesday having wrestled the initiative off Villa. We could have done with that little bit of extra quality up front.”

West Ham

Winston Reid pulled up in the 8th minute of West Ham’s London derby against Chelsea. The New Zealand native appeared to hobble off with a calf injury.

Hi Guys - looking for some advice on my GW 29 transfer:

    Krul - Panti
    Bertrand - Jones - Bellerin - PVA - Rose
    Hazard - Sanchez - Eriksen - Silva - Boyd
    Aguero - Kane - Austin

    1FT, 0.6m

    I'm thinking Jones out, so.....

    Jones ----> 5.8m defender.

Any suggestions, I'm mainly looking at Moreno perhaps?

    Pants
    Clyne Bertrand Naughton PVA Dawson

Scholes: "Ozil isn't even trying at Arsenal".

I don't think these are mutually exclusive.

Ozil has had a number of times where he has looked disinterested and lazy, so I understand Scholes' point. At the same time, I'm sure Scholes would have loved to play with Ozil when he's on his game, he is a really talented guy at the end of the day.

So is that entirely how we judge a player's effort, how far they've ran?

His issue is much more to do with winning the ball back etc. than running. Though I still think he's a phenomenal player.

You need to be lucky with your differentials. For example, if i'd replaced Sanchez by Ozil back in GW24 rather than getting Oscar, i'd probably have 30 more points now.
Another example, I bought Kane back in GW11 and he was a superb differential for quite a long time until everyone got on board.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Best Third Chelsea Player - who isn't Costa.

Ordinarily Diego Costa looks a shoo-in for the Chelsea DGWK to slot alongside a Chelsea defender and most likely Eden Hazard.

But his 8 bookings is a worry. It seems likely that he will pick up two more, or at least one more in the next five gameweeks and then get a two match ban. If this scenario happens who would be your third Chelsea player for the DGWK?

Would you double up on defence? Or is a punt on a differential like Willian a good move? There will be plenty of happy Chadli owners who were glad they drifted from the norm this week.

I brought Oscar in GW24 which was an epic fail. He just isn't nailed on.

I think two defenders Terry and Ivanovich, is the only alternative. Or Fabregas if you want to bank on an upturn in form.

I might be wrong Jonty, but I think Costa has to survive 4 more matches with two bookings, not 5. He is getting booked one in three on average, so i'd be happy to take a risk on him.

I'm considering brining in Ivanovic this week (for Wollscheid) along with Terry and Hazard.

Double Chelsea defence looks a great differential with their fixtures - both of them have good attacking threat too. I'll probably keep those 3 for the DGW, Costa hasn't looked at all the striker he was earlier in the season. Confidence low.

I think getting a double Chelsea defence is better value. Costa usually scores no more than 6 points, so a double defence could give more points to a better value. Chelsea will play tight to win the title

    14. A-VB
      • 9 Years

If Costa is banned, the only option is Terry (Oscar could be one, but rest assured he will certainly not play the full 180 minutes) I think.

Though I don't really enjoy doubling up on any defense, be it Chelsea or Southampton. Also, one of the game is against Arsenal at Emirates and that will be really hard defensively.

To add, I am really uncertain whether Costa will pass through the 12th April (GW32) barrier with 9YC or not. It looks, as if it can go either way and since taking Costa in at exactly GW34 will mean an upgrade of my third striker (N'Doye atm), which will require some planning beforehand to free up cash, this is a massive problem for me really (and probably for many of you as well).

Am I the only man with no Chelsea now lol. Had three not so long ago (Fab/Oscar/Costa) 🙂

Want Costa back as had him from the start to his ban. Might save the FT this week then look at options later with 2 FT's as Austin and Eriksen my Chelsea replacements have ok fixtures.

Kind of hoping he picks up 2 more yellows before GW34 and serves the ban before. Will make the decision a LOT easier.

I'm wondering it Azpi is now worth a punt - can't see Jose rotating too much now and trying to grind this out with his preferred 4. Ivan just out of my price range - maybe Azpi will start getting the BAPS again. Just need to cover the minor chance of potential rotation.

It's kind of odd to have a chance to double up on premier league leaders and we can only think of 3-4 players worth having.

I'm surprised there's no mention of zouma. Yeah, there's a chance he only gets one start, but he's so cheap it hardly matters and in a double game week no one is safe. Maybe that will be the week terry finally gets a rest and zouma gets 180 minutes. I wouldn't bet on it, but again, given his price he's a decent pick.

I currently have Hazard, Ivanovic and Zouma. I won't be trading Zouma out just for a DGW even thought he will likely miss one of the matches, not if I will want him straight back in again. That's two transfers I could use on making sure my squad is fit and in form.

Prior to the double I put down my realistic hopes for the Spurs/QPR players. I think they're the same for the second game:

    Rose to start
    Austin to nick a goal
Eriksen to get at least an assist
    Kane - meh.

Don't know if predicting a Kane 'meh' is foresight or sillysight to be honest, regardless of outcome! Who did you captain?
