With just one match remaining in the Gameweek, we take a look around the grounds to assess the latest batch of injuries sustained over the midweek fixtures.

Arsenal

Nacho Monreal and Wojciech Szczesny were both absent from the Gunners’ matchday squad at Loftus Road. The left-back is nursing a minor back strain, while the out-of-favour goalkeeper was suffering from illness. Meanwhile, Arsene Wenger predicts that Gabriel Paulista – who was subbed off against QPR with a hamstring injury – may well be missing for the next three weeks:

“It’s a hamstring. I don’t know, it’s bad enough to come off. It’s usually 21 days, not years.”

Burnley

Danny Ings was substituted late on against Liverpool because of an injury. The Clarets star pulled up unchallenged and limped off the field to be replaced by Lukas Jutkiewicz.

Chelsea

Nemanja Matic twisted his ankle celebrating the Blues’ Capital One Cup final triumph, but manager Jose Mourinho expects the Serbian international to be fit for their last-16 Champions League clash against Paris Saint-Germain:

“Matic got an injury celebrating the cup. It’s not a big injury, but if today he was not suspended, he wouldn’t play. He twisted his ankle – on the pitch. He put on shinpads, but he didn’t put the tape on. He will play against Paris. On Saturday, Sunday, he will train.”

QPR

Sandro lasted just 55 minutes on his returns to the R’s starting line-up following a lengthy layoff. QPR boss Chris Ramsey insisted it was a precaution and is confident the midfield general will be fit to face Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday:

“I’m hoping he’ll be fit. He came off more from a precaution point of view because he has a history of getting injured. He’s a wholehearted player who will play until he gets injured – and we need him.”

Similarly, Ramsey explained that Nedum Onuoha was removed from the field as a safety measure following his clash of heads with Steven Caulker:

“He has a gash on his eye and we didn’t want to take the risk. It was a blow to the head so we have to take that precaution.”

Stoke

Potters manager Mark Hughes revealed that Philipp Wollscheid tweaked his groin in the warm-up before the Everton clash, explaining why the German centre-back was substituted early on:

“We had to overcome the disappointment of losing Philipp in the opening minutes – he felt his groin in the warm-up. He gave it a go, but he’d lost power in his left leg, and in the end we had to take him off pretty quick. Geoff [Cameron] came in and did well, and we didn’t let that affect what we wanted to do and in the end deserved the victory.”

Swansea

Bafetimbi Gomis was quick to assuage any fears over his health after the Swans’ frontman collapsed on the pitch at White Hart Lane. The France international suffers from a vasovagal condition (low blood pressure) that caused him to faint three times in 2009 when playing for Lyon. Gomis attributed this recent incident to the stress associated with caring for his ill father:

“I wanted to reassure you concerning my health. It actually looks much scarier than it is physically dangerous, and I am feeling well now. I have been under a great deal of stress and fatigue due to my father’s health, which requires me to go back and forth from France.”

West Brom

Callum McManaman – who’s been absent for the Baggies in their last two league ties – is a doubt for West Brom’s FA  Cup quarter-final clash against Aston Villa on Saturday. Manager Tony Pulis said the 23-year-old had done some light training as he prepares for a return to action:

“Callum has done a little bit of work today but we’re not sure if he’ll be fit for Saturday. That’s been a little bit of a set-back for because we certainly need his trickery, especially at the back-end of games. It would have been nice to have brought him on on Tuesday having wrestled the initiative off Villa. We could have done with that little bit of extra quality up front.”

West Ham

Winston Reid pulled up in the 8th minute of West Ham’s London derby against Chelsea. The New Zealand native appeared to hobble off with a calf injury.

What would you prioritise out of these two options?

Get rid of Eriksen... Never liked a Spurs double (Kane is too cheap to let go)

    Or

    Get rid of Vertonghen

    And who for?

Did Evans' spit actually hit Cisse? It didn't look like it from the clip I saw but maybe there is another angle or something?

That could have been 'play acting' to get Evans in trouble though, hardly conclusive

you can't "play act" unless you actually see the other person's intent or feel the spit on any part of your body, in this case. different from pretending to be slapped

But Cisse could have seen Evans spit generally in his direction, assumed that it was a missed attempt, retaliated with an attempt of his own and then thought "I'd better pretend I was hit to justify my own retaliation"

I think so, because Evans is saying that he didn't spit *at* Cisse - obviously if it didn't hit him then this would back up his defence. I'm assuming that they are not handing out bans for spitting on the floor these days

He obviously spit at him. You can see that. He might have missed him but the intent is what gets you banned

If he meant to do it then he deserves everything he gets, but I'm not sure he did.

Also, if Cisse hadn't have retaliated I think Evans would have got the benefit of the doubt ironically

I am just saying I don't know whether he meant to do it - only he will do that. It is certainly not as clear cut as, say, biting someone, as footballers tend to spit as a matter of course

Numb it looks very bad though . It looks like he never took his eyes off Cisse between getting up and spitting on him if that makes sense . Surely he would have turned around or at least away from Cisse if he intended to spit on the ground

Doesn't matter if it hit him or not, He spat AT cisse. They should both be banned, but at least one Cisse isn't pretending he's innocent.

How do you know he spat AT Cisse? Given that it seemed to actually hit the floor, isn't it more likely on balance that he spat AT the floor, allowing for any inaccuracy?

Again, I am not trying to defend him, just saying that no one but Evans can know for sure, and he is saying that he didn't.

Oh come on. Take off your red tinted glasses. They're right next to each other, he's looking right at him and then spits. He was never obviously aiming at him. If he wasn't he would've turned around and spat.

Well, Cisse was getting up from the floor when Evans spat at the floor beside Cisse... to me its like spitting at someone's feet - an incredibly insulting and unacceptable thing to do. Even as a toon fan, neither of their actions are excusable in my opinion, it's one of the most derogatory things a person can do. When I play ball, i generally don't spit within a few inches (and in the direction of) my opponents when they're beside me is what Evans did, irrespective of whether he aimed at the floor or not.

In fact, it looks like it is hitting Cissé, at the very least least, even if the big dollop missed which it may not (you don't see its trajectory continuing after Cissé's face), it comes so close that it is quite hard to imagine that at least part of his spit did not hit Cissé in the face. And all the time Evans is looking straight at Cissé and taking a good aim.

This is really beyond any reasonable doubt.

The very first moment I saw it, it did seem as though he was already spitting without any awareness of Cisse being present. Since then it's been slowed down and zoomed in etc and it looks much worse, but with him not admitting it either I'm more inclined to believe my initial reaction.

I can't imagine it will matter though, he can't deny he's spat and it's hit Cisse so I suspect he'll get in trouble.

I think it's ridiculous how seriously people are taking this thing.
Make them apologize to each other after the game, tempers are bound to flare at some stage during a 38 game season in front of that many people.. get both to issue a public apology to ''send the right message to the kids'' and be done with it to rid the world of all this mindless bickering about ethics and other nonsense.

NO! There must be scandal!! There must be outrage!! We must hold a microscope above every sportsperson and drown them for each and every slight fault they may have. Why can't they just be perfect like the rest of us?
It's not as if any of us take sick days when we are in full health, check FFS on our work computers during working hours or piss with the lid down. Maybe we should be banned from work for a few weeks because somebody from the newspaper decided it was wrong..?
That men playing under that pressure, scrutiny etc to be scolded for every time their behaviour slips below perfect .. it's ridiculous.

spot on gimli. it's always amused me. Never more so than with suarez who's just a brilliant footballer a joy to watch and probably a very decent fella. Boy to people love to judge from their balconies.

Oh ffs, Suarez is another thing altogether. The awful constant cheating, and then he's fecking serial biter! Yes, you get worse injured from some tackles, but tackles are a part of the game, whereas biting has nothing to do with it.

And I don't know if you're a scumbag, but at least I can easily have the moral high ground with Suarez, seen what awful crap he's doing on the field. So just speak for yourself.

Heat of the moment, we'd just clattered into each other, 52,000 people screaming at us from the stands.''

I agree with you Gimli, but we don't get paid millions to work infront of millions of kids who seek to emulate us. (this coming from someone who has today pulled a sickie 🙂 The real shame about all this is that it's received more attention than Gutierrez's comeback from cancer, and that sums up the media really as you so rightly point out is ridiculous.

True this as well. They're not only paid millions of pounds for kicking the ball, because only the players who do it with huge visibility are paid those sums. Truth is, they get paid for being watched, and they should accept the bad side of that as well.

Not true. We can discuss players value in general as well.
Should I own Sánchez or Ozil? Everyone has an opinion on that. If they are predicted to get the same amount of points, it has to be Ozil. In his case, i'd recommend Coutinho for value and I wouldnt want a sub7million midfielder right now with so many budget options at the back and up front

You are correct Aga, but many people also ask the question 'Is X > Y a good transfer?' and many people will reply yes or no, but it's impossible to answer fairly without all the information. There might be a more pressing issue in the team. I guess what Rhinos was getting at, is that it's important to know who Jerne was considering selling in order to get a Liverpool mid

I"d be wary of shipping Eriksen, will have high ownership currently and great fixtures after next week, most will hold. Soz if this further complicates things 😉

Yeah true. Not too fussed about ownership though, I sold Hazard 😀

If I keep Moses for 2 weeks I can switch him to Siggy for his 2 plum home games, looking deeper into it. Hmm

Looks good, but PvA's minutes and Vlaar's availability could leave you short at the back.

Cheers for the feedback, happy to take a punt with PVA as think Poyet will hopefully have realised he needs his attacking runs.

Vlaar you have a point but happy to play Rose if neccessary. Plan is to upgrade PVA/Vlaar > Aldi the week after with the 2 free transfers.

CHaps. Lunchtime poser for you, any help appreciated:

    Foster / Heaton
    Terry / Clyne / Dawson / Wolly / PvA
    Haz / Alexis / Eriksen / Punch / Boyd
    Aguero / Giroud / Kane

    3.5 itb / 1FT

    I need to bring in Silva. Only one main ML rival, who has now shipped Sanchez. So should I;

    A) Punch & Wolly > Silva & McShane (-4pts, exact money for this currently)

    B) Sanchez > Silva this week, Wolly to Ivanovic next week?

    much obliged

I would keep the free transfer and then reassess after next week.

If you have to transfer I would do PVA to Bellerin.

If you have a spare transfer in next few do Terry to Ivan.

    Foster [Hamer]

    Possible new Team B

With the current controversy surrounding Alexis's current form and his claim for a position in your starting line ups at this crucial point in the season, has his 8 point haul on Wednesday evening convinced the majority he is in the "essential" bracket or is he now heading toward the "non essential" bracket?

My question to everyone is.......If Alexis is not worth his hefty price tag, who is worthy of his replacement, whether it be in midfield or attack and is Costa a better shout if downgrading Sanchez??

    1. Ziegler1988
      • 11 Years
      10 years, 9 months ago

I don't think he's essential but I'll be holding for now. That's the big question, if we want Costa back then either Silva/Eriksen goes down to a budget mid or Sanchez has to go. I'm very undecided as of yet.

      1. TINO TINO GIVE US A WAVE
        • 12 Years

That is the big question. At this stage of the season, everything counts. Having a player worth the guts of £11m under performing is not good. I think Chelsea have slightly the better run in but Chelsea will be involved in champions league and may have the league rapped up well before GW38. The question is, will Costa score more points than Sanchez over the next 10 GW's? Personally i doubt he will especially with the possibility of a two game ban also.

Very true!! Arsenal will have everything to play for until the end of the season, without CL commitments also. I just feel there are far too many negatives surrounding Costa at present to use him as an alternative to Costa. Is Ozil a better option than Sanchez??

Having Ozil I have a dilemma - as the Chile guy looks so dangerous. But I'm actually trying to win the whole thing now (OR13) so I have to try something left-field to get to the leader. May even go Kun to Costa/Sturridge as well. When I'm this close I have to go for it soon...

Im sitting approx. 1600 and need a push in the right direction but will defo not sell Kun in order to catch up. Tempted to run the risk with 2 soton defenders until end of season.

    The Jonny Evans spitting thing:

    A) It's a stupid thing to do and people need to stop defending them
    B) It's been blown out of all proportion. No one was killed or even injured.
    C) How anyone can claim it was unintentional is beyond me. You're honestly telling me that Evans had to spit immediately, coincidentally exactly where Cisse was. The need to empty your mouth of saliva is not a life or death moment of urgency.
    D) Evans should grow up and admit it, just like Cisse did. At the moment, that's the only way he can maintain a shred of dignity.
    E) Spitting is gross.

    I rest my case.

      Agreed on all counts but

      F) Jonny Evans is a troll and having scored 15 points in 2 games had to take immediate action to derail any bandwagon that may be about to ensue

a 6 game back should do it

I'm not sure he'll get back in, Shaw sat out Newcastle as he felt a slight twinge in his hammy. He should be back so Rojo can go back to CB alongside Smalling, or we can even play Blind there and bring Carrick back

I sold Jones for Berty 2 weeks ago anyway

Ah good point! Interesting scenario indeed.

Feeling confident about that 4th spot? It's gotta be you vs Liverpool now?

we have a ridiculous run of games starting with Arsenal in the cup on Monday we have

TOT, liv, AVL, MCI, che, eve

If we're still in the top 4 at the end of that then we have a good chance

Any other Yaya owners feeling horribly futtbucked?

The fixtures are still good, so he may end up delivering but having got him upon his return from ACON I'd hoped for a lot more than this

He's come close to returns when I've watched him... or at least I've perceived it that way.

is it me or is the whole idea behind not having Eriksen because you "don't want 2 Spurs players" almost neutralised by the fact EVERYONE has Kane. a bit like owning Sturridge last year, it didn't matter having 2 Liverpool strikers because everyone had Suarez.

Agreed - also, Tottenham's fixtures are too yummy, plus they are out of Europe and both cups and are fighting for 4th so are going to play their strongest team each week, which includes their most creative midfielder. I don't see a rotation risk at all in the near future which appears to be a lot of people's worry.

With the spitting scenario, will Ayoze Perez become a more reliable source of attacking returns? I've looked at him a couple of times this year already and he is intriguing at the price...

      Too many better attacking options.
