Tottenham and QPR clashed horns in Gameweek 28’s swansong, as Harry Kane propelled the North London club to within three points of a top four berth. Elsewhere, in the FA Cup, Scott Sinclair bagged his third goal under the stewardship of Tim Sherwood as Villa completed back-to-back wins over West Brom.

Captain Kane leads by example

After drawing a blank in Tottenham’s midweek clash with Swansea, Harry Kane – the overwhelming favourite for captaincy – delivered two goals and maximum bonus at Loftus Road as Spurs secured their second win in four days.

The England U21 international now sits atop the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) forward standings, with his 16 goals bettered only by Sergio Aguero’s and Diego Costa’s 17. Incredibly, Kane’s fourth brace in nine outings means he’s netted more goals in all competitions (26) than Red Devils trio Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao combined (25). Although the Lilywhites face a tough trip to Old Trafford next time out, a run of four favourable fixtures (LEI, bur, AVL, new) after the United tie – which includes three of the current bottom four – looks set to give Kane the platform to go on delivering and remain firmly in our thinking when it comes to the FPL armband.

Spurs Boss Mauricio Pochettino made just one change from the side that lined up against Swans on Wednesday, handing Ben Davies a start over Danny Rose at left-back – that halted a run of eight consecutive league starts for Rose. Christian Eriksen’s owners were left disappointed after the Dane was withdrawn on 87 minutes without any returns to his name – Eriksen has just one assist to his name in his last five league outings. Fellow midfielders Andros Townsend and Ryan Mason complemented their goals at White Hart Lane with an assist apiece against the R’s, earning 15 and 13 points respectively over the double Gameweek.

Few home comforts for the R’s

In light of the fact that QPR have lost all but one of their road matches (a 2-0 victory over Sunderland) this term, it’s clear that their hopes of survival rely upon accruing a decent points tally at home. However, Loftus Road has been far from a fortress in recent Gameweeks, with the 2-1 defeat to Spurs on Saturday marking their fourth home defeat in succession and sixth encounter in Shepherd’s Bush without a win. With four tricky home match-ups left on QPR’s schedule (EVE, CHE, WHU, NEW), manager Chris Ramsey has his work cut out trying to beat the drop.

With regards to the 52-year-old’s team selection, Mauricio Isla and Rio Ferdinand started ahead of Junior Hoilett and the injured Darnell Furlong, with Nedum Onouha shifting over to the vacant right-back berth. Charlie Austin came close on occasion – clattering Hugo Lloris’ crossbar from 10 yards out in the first half – but couldn’t match Kane’s goal scoring exploits on the day and ultimately scored with just one of his 15 attempts over the two fixtures.

Sparkling Sinclair back on the radar

Scott Sinclair recorded his third goal in four appearances for Aston Villa in all competitions as Tim Sherwood’s men progressed into the FA Cup semi-finals. The former Manchester City winger executed a composed finish during a late counter-attack, curling the ball into the corner of Boaz Myhill’s goal. Sinclair was benched for the Villains’ last league match against West Brom but seized the chance to impress in a repeat of the midweek West Midlands derby. Should Sinclair be rewarded with a run of starts in the league off the back of this performance, then the 25-year-old’s modest 5.2 price tag might attract a few managers looking for a budget midfielder to bolster their squad.

Sherwood retained nine of the XI that triumphed over the Baggies on Tuesday, calling up Leandro Bacuna and Sinclair for the suspended Alan Hutton and injured Christian Benteke – the Belgian striker was ruled out with a hip injury. The extent of the setback is not yet clear, with Sherwood remaining vague in his post-match comments…

“With Christian we’re not sure. He will continue to get assessed. We keep picking up these little niggles here and there.”

Benteke will remain a doubt for the Gameweek 29 trip to Sunderland and Sherwood will also be without the option of Jack Grealish on the flank: he was sent off a second bookable offence just 15 minutes into his cameo against the Baggies.

Over in the West Brom camp, Tony Pulis recalled Jonas Olsson to central defence, with Joleon Lescott sliding over to left-back, freeing up Chris Brunt to operate on the left flank. Midfielder Claudio Yacob received a second yellow card for a seemingly innocuous challenge on Bacuna and will miss West Brom’s next home clash against Stoke City and the away trip to Man City – Yacob’s ban is extended as yesterday’s red was the second of the season.

Gameweek 33 Changes To Come

Fantasy managers should be aware that Villa’s progress to the last four of the cup means that their Gameweek 33 home encounter with QPR – initially pencilled in for Monday April 20 – will now need to be rescheduled, as the semi-finals are due to take place over Saturday 18 and Sunday 19.

Depending on the new date, this could possibly lead to a double Gameweek and given that Chelsea and Leicester have a pair of fixtures in Gameweek 34, many will be hoping for a similar scenario for Villa and QPR.

The Premier League could attempt to keep the fixture within Gameweek 33, although this looks set to be hampered by UEFA demands. Villa (away to City) and QPR (at home to West Ham) both play on Saturday 25 in Gameweek 34, their re-arranged clash could be shifted to either the Tuesday 21 or Wednesday 22 beforehand – depending on the date of Villa’s semi-final tie – thus still giving them both at least three days before their next league match. However, with Champions League and Europa League Quarter-Finals set for April 21-23, it seems likely that the Premier League will be pressured to move re-scheduled fixtures to Gameweek 34: UEFA have objections to domestic matches being played out on the evening of European ties. Further double Gameweek fixtures look likely, then, adding to the midweek Gameweek 34 tie involving Leicester and Chelsea.

There will be further changes to the Gameweek 33 schedule as a result of today and Monday’s Quarter-Final ties with one of Man United and Arsenal and, potentially, Liverpool, all having their fixtures re-arranged as a result of progress to the Wembley semi-finals.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Why captain a single gameweek player in a double gameweek?

In seven years of playing Fpl I've never once captained a single gameweek player during a double gameweek.

Yesterday was a good case in point with Kane, Eriksen, Austin and even Chadli all getting more than Aguero, the popular sgwk option.

But I'm not writing this hot topic because the double gameweek captainers were proved right yesterday- instead this is written because double gameweeks are a rare and fun part of the game. To not captain a double gameweek player is missing out on a great part of the game, even if there appear to be good single gameweek players to cast the armband at.

I've had failures in my time during double gameweeks Milner, Carlton Cole (yes really) and successes like Kane, Rooney and way back in the mists of time Vidic. And who can forget Sessegnon's last minute goal. These are excellent memories, both good and bad, that are part of what makes fantasy football interesting and fun.

Exactly. Its moments like that which keep many Fantasy managers going. Equally if Sessegnon had failed I'd have still have remembered that match for years to come.

This wasn't especially written with him in mind...but I did think it was odd when he was talking of Austin as captain and then went for Aguero. Austin was a good option I think....during the match yesterday I was starting to wish I'd captained the QPR man - was so close lots of time.

Several excellent options like Kane, Eriksen & Austin.

Depends what the DGW fixture is. This week, Kane was a bit of a no-brainer as he is bang on form and Spurs had a good pair of fixtures.

But, had the DGW been, say, Aston Villa vs Burnley with these teams being away to Chelsea and City for their other game, I think I might have captained Aguero with one game over any Villa or Burnley player.

Ah, but that's the point I'm making...I will always captain a double gameweek player as its a rare and exciting part of the game. That's the key part for me over fixtures.

As said I've captained Sessegnon, Milner and even Carlton Cole before in a dgwk when there were better single gameweek options. Sometimes it works , sometimes it doesn't - but that's part of it. Watching on during that second game in a double knowing that you haven't captained one of those playing is not an experience I want, for better or worse.

            Agreed.

Besides, I think for most of the lads who made a SGW player their captain, they were aiming to gain ranks by means of a differential choice. So cannot say anything against them really.

But from Jonty's point-of-view, yes, DGW are rare and hence we should enjoy it! 🙂

People will moan about 'hindsight' etc if they captained anyone but Kane. But that's nonsense in this case... all non-Kane captainers were rightly punished for trying to be clever.

I wouldn't say they were trying to be clever. That's a bit harsh but you are right that Kane was by far the obvious captain choice given form, fixtures and the key part - he had two games.

For those looking for differentials Eriksen and Austin were great shouts. I'd have definitely gone for one of them if I was looking to do something different.

For a lot of people (like Granville) it was a bit of a "last roll of the dice" attempt to catch up in their mini league. It's not that they really expected their captain to out score Kane but there was certainly a chance with the likes of Austin or Eriksen.

          • 12 Years
          10 years, 9 months ago

The wrong sort of risk to take, imo. When 90+% of people are captaining Kane, the risk was huge. The chances of Aguero scoring so much more than Kane to make it worthwhile were small. Take risks, but not in such a high risk, low chance of reward situation. I dare say he's plummeted as a result and made his task even harder.

You pick the the guy you think will score the most points, thats usually the player who has the potential to play 180 minutes rather than 90.

99 out of 100 times you would want to cpt a dgw`er.

      Easy.

The reason why it never made sense to captain a sgw over a dgw can be seen below

Assuming - Aguero scored 2 goals in SGW with 3 bonus = 13 points

Assuming - Kane scored 1 goal in DGW with 3 bonus = 11 points

Even with Aguero outscoring Kane difference in points was minimal and Kane had a very good chance of scoring more than 1.

It's a rare chance to have Aguero as capt differential. Punt might have worked.

With the same sense of enjoyment yes.

The double gameweek for me shows what Fantasy Football is - a game. Nothing more, nothing less. Like any game, be it a computer game or Monopoly it has key exciting moments, be it unlocking a secret room in Tomb Raider, buying a hotel on Mayfair or captaining a double gameweek player - these are all essential parts of fun during their respective games.

I capt Kane. In my position, it was a no brainier. But it's a horses for courses. If you are chasing and you need something to happen, the double Gw gives you a risky chance to get back in it. No point wasting it by going with the overwhelming majority. You can get the same enjoyment from the other side of the sword. ( hiding behind the couch shouting for Kane to fall over)
Didn't work this time, but it's an understandable tactic for me.

Surely it would be a rare occasion for a single GW player to have more than double the expected output per match than the best double GW prospect. The only caveat is the threat of rotation for congested DGW fixtures. I was worried Kane and Eriksen might not start both. Turns out they did... this time.

Even if Aguero had done really well I'd have still regretted captaining a double gameweek player. As well as it being fun - in the main a player with two matches always has a greater chance of points.

For the first time ever i captained a single gameweeker, and was duly punished. i'm a spurs fan and convinced myself that Kane would not play both matches. I expected aguero to at least score agaibst leicester, so i didn't think it was that big a risk. But i should know better! In any other week Aguero at home to Leicester would have been a runaway captain choice. I don't think many people would have expected him to blank. And I don't think many would have been surprised to see him amass a big haul.

Kane was the safety play. Some, including me, considered that the effects of 4 games in 9 days would reduce Spurs' (and therefore Kane's) effectiveness. That turned out not to be the case.

For me, Kane scored at the top end of what I thought was likely for him and Aguero scored less than anyone would have expected. It would be nice to be able to pick your captain in retrospect but the game doesn't work that way. But I didn't captain Aguero just to be different. I captained him because I thought he was the best choice.

You get (c) fails sometimes. This is just a higher profile one because of the DGW. But I'm not moaning about it.

    16. Zasa
      • 11 Years
      10 years, 9 months ago

Yeah I was one of the Aguero cappers, confident in Aguero's form of late and his performances all around as well. A blip that one, home vs a poor Leicester backline, on paper (like Ruth pointed above) I was sure he's get at last a goal in. City having scored 10 goals in the league matches before this game, I was confident it would have been a resounding high scoring affair for City. Yet Leicester put in a good game and the scoreline was justified. Just looked like Bony was so hungry for his first club goal, hogging all the shots.

Also, I thought this was a good opportunity to rise in rank as Kane was an overwhelming majority in the top10k, was ranked 50k before the the GW started and I genuinely thought the captaincy decision was a sound move.

Anyway, this is my first season and subsequent DGW, and just learned that captaining a DGW player is more enjoyable and in general will have the higher point ceiling.

Fwiw, yeah I moaned about this in the DZ last night, and that was the first and last time I'll moan on here 😮

3rd straight red arrow in row, down to OR160 from OR33. Getting Yaya wasn't the smartest call. What do I do with this team now?
    Pants/Krul
    Clyne Kosc Rose Wolly Wisdom
    Silva Yaya Erik Hazard Boyd
    Defoe Kane Kun

I'd keep Defoe for one more game at least. Not sure if selling Yaya ahead of 2 kinda easy games is smart as well - he's nailed on to start and he might eventually score. Any ideas?

I've put more detail in. There's a chance that matches would remain in Gameweek 33 but I'd say the Premier League will be under pressure to move the fixtures to the following week. There are CL and Europa League fixtures in the midweek between 33 and 34 so it seems that domestic matches won't be schedule for then, shifting them to 34.

      Double Gameweeks likely, then.

Is this the right set up for my team ye think for the week ahead?

    Foster,
    Pieters, Clyne, PVA,
    Eriksen, Hazard, Silva, Sanchez,
    Giroud, Kane, Aguero (c)

    Subs: Myhill, Naughton, Rose, Boyd,

    1.3m in bank. 1ft.

Should I just save the transfer?

    Zouma/ Bellerin on my radar.
Zouma- PVA is an option but PVA has a nice fixture IF he starts!

One of those 'sliding doors' moments this week. I had to choose between selling siggy or cazorla for eriksen. IF i had gone for cazorla, i could have done it without a 4 point hit, i would have had mane in my starting line up (siggy admittedly would have been benched), i would have capitalised on santi's selling value before it dropped 0.1, and i wouldn't have QPRs Yun littering my otherwise beautiful defence.

i sold siggy, and now have some fixing to do.

    Bad week
