Chelsea yesterday announced the signing of Juan Mata from Valencia on a five year contract. The deal is thought to be in the region £23.5m and represents a significant step forward in Andre Villas-Boas’ restructuring of the Blues’ playing style.

It’s also a major coup for the Stamford Bridge club- Mata had been strongly linked with a move to both Arsenal and Spurs but despite Harry Redknapp’s protestations that the move is only about wages, Mata has insisted Chelsea fans should have Fernando Torres to thank for his part in the move.

When [Torres] knew they were interested in signing me, he spoke with me and told me that playing abroad could be a very nice step for me. It’s a new endeavour in my life, to develop personally and professionally. So I think I took the most logical decision.

The Statistics

A prodigious talent, Mata joined the youth ranks of Real Oviedo at the age of twelve, spending three years there before being snapped up by Real Madrid. A successful graduate of the Spanish giants’ youth academy, he played for the Real Madrid B team, scoring 10 goals in 39 games in the 2006-07 campaign, before-in what has subsequently proved a huge error of judgement- being allowed to join Valencia on a free transfer.

It’s at the Mestalla he made his name; four seasons there saw Mata play 129 La Liga matches, scoring 33 goals and making 36 assists- a clear indication he’s as capable of laying on a chance as he is of finding the net. A disciplined player with no history of long-term injury, he picked up just 10 yellow cards and was never sent off in his time at Valencia.

In terms of international football, Mata has played at every level in the Spanish youth system- he debuted for the Under 16s in 2004, scoring 2 goals in 3 games and was called up for the Under 21s at eighteen years of age. Again, his record is impressive- Mata made 43 appearances at all levels between Under 16 and Under 21 and scored 23 goals, while his record for the full international team stands at 4 goals in 11 games.

The Prospects

Chelsea have played 4-3-3 for a number of years now but in order to replicate the success he achieved at Porto, Villas-Boas clearly feels he needs to invest in new personnel. No longer will they be solely reliant on knock-downs from a barnstorming centre forward such as Didier Drogba and the late runs into the box of Frank Lampard. This season, the plan is to play high up the pitch, pressing the opponent, harrying them into making mistakes. The new boss wants Chelsea to play with width, both up front and from the back.

So far, it hasn’t quite worked- Chelsea’s ageing squad perhaps lack the dynamism and energy required to carry out their manager’s gameplan. As of yet, only Ashley Cole and Jose Bosingwa look to have fulfilled the new bosses expectations, offering plenty attacking menace from full-back areas. Mata, therefore, is a crucial piece in the Chelsea puzzle Villas-Boas is looking to solve. The player explained his new manager’s thinking was the clincher in his arrival:

Speaking directly with Villas-Boas was the decisive factor. He explained how his style will be based on 4-3-3 and how important I will be to his plans.

He said he wanted Chelsea to play more attacking football this season, and that I would be a big part of that. The plan is that I can play on either flank or even in the middle playing in between the lines of midfield and attack. I like to keep the ball and use it well, I am an attacking player and above all I like to set up goals and score them also.

In terms of a conventional 4-3-3, then, Mata’s arrival could pose a threat to Florent Malouda on the left. The Frenchman played every league match for Chelsea last season but as far as game time goes, has looked a shaky proposition under Villas-Boas. He was subbed off in the game at Stoke and started last week’s match with West Brom on the bench, only coming on due to an inept performance from Salomon Kalou. Reports in this morning’s press suggested Malouda could be on his way before the transfer window slams shut next week; Juventus general director, Giuseppe Marotta, admitted an interest last week but the Blues boss moved to refute the allegations in this afternoon’s press conference, going as far to say that the club cannot allow the player to be sold on.

On the subject of today’s press conference, Villas-Boas offered an insight into his views on where Mata might play:

He can play right, left and through the middle. He has been tested as well in 4-4-2, not just 4-3-3 so it gives us flexibility in formation as well.

This backs the school of thought that suggests Mata could also play on the right of the 4-3-3; Villas-Boas utilised the left-footed Hulk in a similar vein at Porto last season. Villas-Boas has already shown he is willing to change plans mid-match; the Chelsea boss altered his side’s shape last Saturday, with a diamond replacing the starting formation, before reverting back to 4-3-3- Mata’s adaptability, then, will be key to his in-game thinking.

Coming in at a price of 9.5 and classed as a midfielder this afternoon in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, he’s likely to see significant investment from Fantasy managers, given the likes of Malouda and Frank Lampard are priced at 10.5 and 12.0 respectively. If his impact is anywhere near the same as Rafael Van der Vaart and Luis Suarez in their debut seasons, Mata may prove to be something of a bargain, though it’s early days to say whether he’ll be involved in set-pieces to the extent of Lampard and Malouda.

The next few days should shed more light on the situation. Villas-Boas admitted in this afternoon’s press conference that Chelsea are also looking to snap up Porto’s Alvaro Pereira and with the previous additions of Romelu Lukaku and Oriol Romeu, the club will need to trim down their options ahead of naming a 25-man squad for the season ahead. Plenty more movement can be expected, then, as Villas-Boas starts to sculpt this squad into one of his own making.

curious as to how many of you have ever taken a 4-point hit to bring in an "untested" (and unlikely to start that game week) player because you were worried his price would go up before you could snatch him?

im thinking about swapping out the (potentially seriously) injured riise and ineffective n'zogbia for the cheaper danny simpson and...of course, much-hyped juan mata.

ordinarily i would sit on it and let n'zogbia find his form at home against wolves. problem is, i like wolves this week and, as made obvious earlier, want to get mata into my team sheet asap.

so that makes Mata's price stay the same for the next 8 days as of yesterday, regardless of what happens this weekend.

hmmm, a twist...but if riise is out for 6 months his price could drop.

which would then price me out of the mata sweepstakes.

I can't for the life of me understand why anyone would wildcard this week.

    - There's no double gw advantage
    - Two games isn't enough to judge which players are on form
    - There's a TWO WEEK break after this gw, and international matches always throw out a few significant injuries.
    - There were hardly any injuries in GW2 that'd screw up your team and force your hand to use a wildcard
    - You just had one last week

Really like, it must be the one of the worst possible weeks you could play it.

Unless, of course, you *know* your going to WC during the int'l break - in which case, you might as well use one trade this week > due to your free transfers being reset to 1 after a WC [so you'd effectively 'lose' one free trade if you've saved up].

    Just a request:

If you want to start a new topic, then page down to the bottom and post it there.

Replying to someone else's post with an RMT or XX vs YY just interrupts the flow of the conversation (which is virtually non-existent until about 5:00am to 7:00am BST).

But at least make it easier for someone to notice your post by following the basic rules above.

The new forum format will be much more sophisticated, so unless you can understand how these very basic rules apply here then you're on a one way ticket to planet Lose. 🙂

(Crosses his fingers and hopes this doesn't appear as a reply, in which case you're all forgiven and I love you lots). 🙂

"Villas-Boas offered an insight into his views on where Mata might play:

He can play right, left and through the middle. He has been tested as well in 4-4-2, not just 4-3-3 so it gives us flexibility in formation as well."

How is that possibly an insight? Basically he could be playing absolutely anywhere.

i think AVB was trying to deflect the whole "malouda replacement" thing.

for fantasy owners though, Mata's versatility is def. a plus. seems he's likely to get into the team sheet regardless of supporting cast.

probably a great option just not sure about the rush. unless AVb says something different tomorrow then his hints earlier were mata wont start. yes the fixture is tempting but not everyone is going to do a suarez or aguero and makes 20mins worthwhile

I am in need of reassuring, o wise men of the late nite discussions

I am stuck with Torres. I will be holding for this gameweek.

But then.........two weeks until the next. I will have two transfers, but I think I'll need to sell Torres ASAP to avoid price drop (probably for Bent or Aguero) But that gives 2 entire weeks for Bent or Aguero to become injured. Worth it surely?

Well, you can either wildcard, which I wouldn't advise, or play your transfers after the internationals for his potential replacements (Bent and Aggers in your case) are over and done with.

That's the lower risk and higher reward strategy.

IMO people worry too much about team value...

Sure saving 0.1 or 0.2 is nice, but as Murphy's Law states:
"Anything that can go wrong will go wrong."

So don't be surprised if you run into an Aguero or Bent injury, then waste another transfer to get them out.

      Just my two cents!

          Awesome advice?

Any of your players can get injured at any time.

I have the bitter experience of having captained Zigic in the DGW last season where he knackered his groin during the pre-match warm-up.

Same thing with Zamora (DGW), and Barton also jiffed his back during the warm-up for a game too.

The only thing you can do is to make sure you have a reasonably decent bench. But even then, Sod's Law dictates that one of them will be off with an ingrowing eyelash and another will have developed a sudden interest in eating grit.

So then you're left with a defender whose first name you can't even remember and has decreased in value from 4.0 to around 2.

          It's hard, this game.

pretty much, average position map of the last game suggested rooney was actually slightly ahead of welbeck but during the game he seemed to be everywhere as usual. http://soccernet.espn.go.com/gamecast?id=318207&cc=5739
the amount of chances he set up and got n the end of himself was still promising, plus he seems to finally be a free-kick threat again having notched one after A 7 YEAR DROUGHT last season

Yaya is the 2nd most transferred out player. I find that surprising.... then again I've just put Mata in for him. He's pure class and in that Chelsea team I can't see how he could fail. He'll have trained with the team for 3days and is at home no Norwich. I'm gambling on him starting. Yaya away to Spurs was unlikely to be to valuable this week anyway.

      Torres playing 'with that team'

Norwich is esperanto for "beatable without extra help"

I could be wrong - but I just want to present a counter-point.

BTW, why are people running from City at Tot? Tot look eminently beatable by a team like City, even at home.

We'll see. I'm not using points to make this transfer so all that I'm hoping for is for Mata to outscore Yaya, we'll see. I was going to transfer him out anyway so it's not too much of a problem. Lot's of injury's during the int break would wound me though.

1.) thanks, everyones advice and chat on transfers and team selection is both useful and often interesting.
2.) nearly all the regular contributors seem pretty sound.
3.) this site keeps me sane at work. long live Fantasy Football Scout!!
4.) that dbronaldo guy is a tool. he bites more than a hungry fish and loves the sound of his own voice as it drifts down to everyone from atop his high horse.

    that is all

sage words all. I'm in same position, have decided to read less and try to post more. Might mean I go over ground already covered, which I know irks some, but there are usually 1500+ comments on each thread by the time I get to them, just can't read them all.

#4 has the feel of catharsis about it ... 😀

The trolls can drive me batty, though. And DBR is many things, but no troll.

Nice one John. Join in more mate.
I don't mind dbr but I get your point 😀
I envisage him as a young idealist uni student. I used to be similar, gotten much more pessimistic in my old age.

Donal is a fairly smart guy but directs most of his smarts in the wrong direction on here. He's not a student, according to him.

His major failing is his complete inability to admit that he's sometimes wrong, which shows a deeply ingrained sense of insecurity.

But it's endearing in a way. He's learning about himself in a fairly passive forum.

But Maxi.....I just can't wait for the ignore feature. The guy/gal is a troll, pure and simple.

eventually Arsenal is going to be scoring, right?

and when they do, Ramsey or Wilshere? or someone else?

Don't fancy Willshire to be scoring much in Fantasy terms, think he is excellent player though. Ramsey has more potential in FF, but is still just that at the moment - potential. RVP will be the obvious go-to man when (I believe it is when not if) Arsenal kick in.

If you're an atheist like me, then DunnBaLeivaNgog is quite a good one.

The unfortunate outcome being that apparently there is a god and he's urinating on my team from a great height.

Ah well. You win some, you lose some....

      Scouting for Goals?
Norfolk 'n' Chance (which you've probably heard)
      Multiple Scorgasms?

Just a cople that I remember, not much good really.

I've never bettered my effort from last year: Cesc,Drogs&RocknRoll (the character limit annoyingly makes it look a bit sloppy)

It was even better when I actually had both Cesc and Drogs in my team last year, but I can't think of a better one as yet this year.

Mata has to be a good addition in terms of punning capability though.

Still gutted Young left Villa and they didn't sign Robbie Keane: I genuinely thought when they signed Bent they were going to go for the dream trio....

That would have been fun, Jonny. But obvious.

Mata brings in lots of options in the mid-name area and also at the finish.

I'll masticate on that one a while.... 🙂

Decided to give N'Zog 1 more chance, if he doesn't produce I will bring in Ramsey GW 4, seem like a decent plan?

N'Zog looks on the out for me too, but also waiting till the international break.

I'll see how Arsenal fair this weekend...they have some tasty fixtures starting GW4!

Arsenal do have a good run after the break. RVP is best option, but it is hard to tell who is going to score FF points in midfield. Walcott is infuriating!

I've got Rooney, and refuse to be tempted my RVP.

Rvp still has the most potential in the game imo. Like rooney & suarez but with a complete monopoly on set pieces.
