Many of the Fantasy Football Scout community were looking at a root and branch overhaul of their teams this week, as the shine from last month’s Wildcards quickly began to wear off and the cruel reality of injuries and shifting fixtures began to kick in. We look back on the discussion that ensued, whilst also pondering the player of the season to this point and the likely top target for the remaining Gameweeks of the campaign. As ever, we also find time to catch up on all the ups and downs in our community tournaments.

The Hottest Topics

Strikers were again under the spotlight this week, with Phaze 1 coming out in full support of Robin van Persie, despite his Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price tag of £13.6m. His post entitled “Is RVP Worth It” acknowledges that the United frontman represents poor value financially but, he said, this is outweighed by his captaincy potential. Has today’s strike in the 2-2 draw with Fulham strengthened his case?

The Fantasy Freak was less optimistic about the prospects of City’s strikers. With their tough schedule, involving an FA Cup clash with Chelsea and a Champions League encounter with Barcelona, he predicted rotation up front from Manuel Pellegrini. Instead he urged people to consider Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge or Aston Villa’s Christian Benteke, among others.

Meanwhile, our midfields were the focus of Innsie’s post looking at some key differentials in the centre of the pitch. Chelsea’s Willian and Cardiff’s on loan United winger Wilfried Zaha were among his top picks discussed.

Another of Innsie’s midfield picks was Norwich’s Robert Snodgrass, who also caught the attention of our resident Sky Game expert d1sable. He argued that his underlying attacking stats demand our attention – although Snodgrass will need to return from the knock that saw him sit out the weekend’s draw with City to help d1sable’s case.

Defenders were far from neglected in this week’s chatter as we asked the community for their thoughts on best back lines over the coming Gameweeks. Yome came forward to stress how he’s avoiding Cardiff defenders, despite the Welsh side’s kind fixture run – a shrewd move given the latest showing at Swansea, He favoured the value of Tottenham’s Michael Dawson and Aston Villa’s Nathan Baker – he was certainly spot on with Dawson following today’s shutout. Elsewhere, Yes the Sess! was among those backing the rock-solid Chelsea defence and Southampton’s re-emerging rearguard.

West Ham’s Winston Reid was the only defender who made d1sable’s list of best Fantasy Football assets from now until the season climax. He predicts a particularly great final four months of the season for West Brom’s Chris Brunt and Manchester United’s Juan Mata.

Meanwhile, Captain Shirokov quizzed the community on their favourite player pick of the season. Santi Cazorla was his choice, having notched him four goals in two matches after transferring him in over Mersut Ozil. S.Kuqi opted for Adam Lallana and Deicide has selected Chelsea’s ever-reliable defender John Terry – ever-reliable until this weekend, of course.

We also took time out to canvas opinion on the approaching Gameweek 28 blank – how will you cope with the missing fixtures from City, United, Sunderland and, err…West Brom?

Finally, Jesus Navas – Our Lord rocked up with some superb analysis of Luis Suarez and his flat-track bully statistics. Essential reading for all those pondering the merits of the Uruguayan flavoured armband ahead of the trip to Fulham.

The Community Tournaments

The Uefa Council’s Champions League and Europe League tournaments got underway in Gameweek 24. Following the first set of fixtures ENR, Super Zlatan, Champ, Athletico Timbo, Torres Magic, The Shadow, Billy Ketsu and Giggs Boson topped the Champions League groups. Those in pole position in the Europa League groups were DonTheSpecial One, BBG, The Tinkerman, NEIL, Archie, Rate My Username, SW6, AK, Louis9618, Snake Juice, Home Run Baker and Beavis.

In HeelsOverHead’s Worst to First – 2 Million + Club, for teams with an overall rank below 2,000,000 in the first five Gameweeks, YOLO Toure was leading the way with an overall rank of 11,824. In addition, there were six teams in the top 100,000 following Gameweek 24.

Torres Magic topped his own Last Man Standing league in Gameweek 24 with a score of 77 but waved goodbye to 24 managers. Qubit (The Irregular) leads the After Xmas League and Unbelievable Bentek-kers heads the seeding for both the FPL Open and Elite 64. Full details of his leagues can be found here.

Going into Gameweek 25, that chap Jonty held on to his lead in the FFS Old Farts Club league, the FFS Moderators and Contributors league and the FPL part of the Iron Man competition, for those taking part in multiple games. Gigging Order and In Like Flynn continue to top the Iron Man’s Sky Sports and Metro leagues respectively.

I’m still hanging to my lead in one of In Tommy We Trust’s AllThingsFPL leagues along with Bootsy, Billy Ketsu, Jambo17, Koneheads and Evs.

It is that time of the year when most safe teams are getting the same score, give or take 5-10 points. Captaincy punts and a good differential are becoming harder to find, but also present an opportunity to put 10-20 points on your rivals. Hazard captain last GW was a prime example, for the people with the minerals to do this.

    Some options I'm contemplating:

Eriksen > Adam - Eriksen is far too inconsistent, as are Spurs and he's very frustrating to own. Adam is in form and it's only because people dislike him, and Stoke's reputation for being defensive, that he won't get picked up by more people. Watching him on the weekend he was involved in a lot of set plays, corners and I suspect he has pens when Walters is not on the field.

Mertesacker > Kompany for 4 GW punt (including the blank of course) - He'll be involved in CSs and has been nodding home some lovely goals on corners. Yes, Mert is a lovely pick in the backline but you can downgrade to Koscielny in a few weeks when their fixtures tidy up.

Giroud > Lambert - i love Lambert and watching him curl that free kick in against Begovic on the weekend was a reminder of his quality. Southampton are a very silky team this year and are a force both home and away. I expect we'll see Lambert in the top 5 strikers by the end of the year.

Puncheon > Ince - yes very sideways and would only do this if i had a FT to burn. Ince was epic against West Brom, he has a natural flair for getting in good positions and is a quality finisher ... he is literally 10-20% better at getting goal-scoring opportunities than anyone else in that team. Expect big things from him, now nailed on and as the relegation battles start to play out he'll be vital for the Eagle's survival.

Also consider Sterling if you don't have SAS, Shane Long for a cheap 3rd mid (i think he'll blossom at Hull) and all the way from left-field is Routledge with the new gaffer at the helm.

      - I think Adam is a decent pick, especially as he has a fixture in GW29.
      - Mert to Komp is pretty sideways IMO as I can see Arsenal getting as many CSs as City over the next 4. Mert has a decent goal threat too.
      - Giroud to Lambert is a good transfer.
      - I'd give Ince a few more weeks but I agree he could turn into a great pick.

      ADAM
Stoke have a great rest of season schedule, and as you mention plays both gw28 and gw29. I think I'm swapping him in for Puncheon this week.

      KOMPANY
I've been thinking the same thing with MC defense, possibly even Joe Hart. Rest of season schedule for MC defense is very good and has at least 1 dgw, so if you can rotate to cover blanks, he'd be a great differential.

nice post, OP, have an upvote.

Hi everyone, so this is my side:
    Mannone
    Olsson Yoshida John
    Silva Lallana Hazard Noone
    RVP Suarez Benteke

    K. Davis, Delph, Bruce, Ward

I've got 4.2 million in the bank right now, the reason its so mental is because on my Jan WC I went all out with RVP, Suarez and Aguero up front, and with Aguero getting injured I was forced to downgrade. Haven't wanted to take a points hit these last few weeks because it would just be for a defender anyway (don't like taking hits for defenders), but with Noone not playing maybe I should splash out on a new fourth mid?

    My current plan is:
    K. Davis ---> Adrian

What are your thoughts on my crazy, crazy team?

The priority here is a new midfielder. If u want to avoid hits, Delph to Mirallas looks the move. If willing to take a hit, I'd prioritise Bruce to Demel over the keeper move.

I'd do -4 or -8 hit right now for a major upgrade at GK (Davis or Mannone out), D x 2 (John and Bruce out) or 4th Mid (Noone out).

See what you can come up with (3 new players)?

Who to ditch Evans for? Thinking Demel. What's the deal with Collins? Any other options?

    Current bankline:

    Bourc cheapie

    Coleman, Mert, Azpi, Chambers, Evans

GW 29 is the trickier gameweek. Just make sure you can save your GW28 one to help fix 29. Still reckon I will end up taking hits. Although I only have one player based in Manchester

I've been thinking a bit more about this...

I wanted to lose Evans this week or next, but now I reckon it's actually better to hold on to him and sell Fabio instead, since Evans (and United) are one of the few teams actually guaranteed a fixture in GW29...

I can easily manage to bench him in GW28 and just hope that he plays in GW29...

Also gives me an extra DGWer for GW31...

This makes more sense to me than selling him, since the Cardiff game in GW29 is rated at +/- 10% chance of being played anyway...

My defense - Cahill Kos Evans Ward Fabio

    Thoughts?

OK so after this week I will know who to sell dzeko for. That's all the info I need really

It is always worth remembering that a team with a blank will inevitably have a double in the future, so if it is a longterm squad member you want to keep, you can just roll with it

People will take massive hits that might not be worth it

Yeah I reckon I might settle for 9/10 players with no hit if that's all I can manage for free...

But we have 4 more FTs between now and then... so worst case scenario, I will have 6 players, but the odds suggest that we could add a couple more teams to the list of those who have a game, I reckon it'll be more like 9/10...

In summary, I'm looking to bring in Olsson, Adam and Snodgrass...

Don't think its worth having a MU defender vs City in a DGW. Might as well look at that as a SGW for Evans. Might even get you - returns based on what we've seen this season. WB away isn't even close to a gimme for a CS either for this man u team so I don't seem much upside to having Evans at all.

I know it is a long way away, but I think the double on gw31 is going to bring a lot of decisions! Aguero (if fit), rvp, Rooney, dzeko, negredo all with doubles. But Liverpool go to Cardiff and a lot of us have money tied up in Suarez (ok all of us!) And sturridge

Choosing the right front 3 is going to be a nightmare!

he should. Nothing will change and he doesn't deserve to be handed hundreds of millions of pounds to work with. I was willing to give him a chance given all the injuries but he's playing the exact same system, or lack thereof, with just Rooney and RVP in there. It's diabolical.

In order of likelihood of getting them:

      1. Will definitely have Aguero.
      2. Currently own Silva and Mata and unlikely to get rid.
      3. RVP/Rooney and Zab/Kompany possibly brought in.
      4. Maybe Evans.
