World Cup 2014

World Cup 2014 – Team Analysis – Uruguay

Our final look at Group D focuses on the South Americans, Uruguay. Oscar Tabarez’ troops could be prone to early investment given that they kick off their campaign against the underdogs, Costa Rica, on Saturday June 14 at 8pm, before squaring up to England five days later at 8pm and taking on Italy in their final group match on Tuesday June 24 at 5pm:

Road to Qualification

It’s fair to say the Uruguayans struggled to impress during qualifying. After winning three and drawing two of their opening five group fixtures, they subsequently embarked on a poor run of form that saw them finish fifth in the CONMEBOL group, behind Argentina, Colombia, Chile and Ecuador, scoring and conceding 25 goals. They then required a two-legged play-off against Jordan to ensure their progress and after winning the away match 5-0, registered a goalless home draw to clinch qualification.

Most Starts Fernando Muslera, Maxi Pereira, Arevalo Rios, Diego Godin, Luis Suarez, Edinson Cavani (16), Diego Lugano (15), Diego Forlan (11), Martin Caceres, Alvaro Pereira, Diego Perez, Cristian Rodriguez (10)

Most Goals Luis Suarez (11), Edinson Cavani (6), C Rodriguez (3)

The Key Targets

Uruguay’s preparations have been hit hard by a knee injury to Luis Suarez. The Liverpool frontman underwent minor surgery last week after picking up the problem in training and with just under a fortnight remaining until the tournament kicks off, his chances of participating still remain uncertain. In terms of form, Tabarez’ side have played once since clinching qualification – a 1-1 draw in Austria back in March.

In defence, those 25 goals against over the qualifiers hardly instill much confidence, with a mere four clean sheets in 16 group games achieved. The conditions are likely to prove beneficial to the South Americans’ chances, though, and a win in the opener against Costa Rica, combined with an England v Italy stalemate, would allow Uruguay to set up on the counter over their remaining couple of matches.

At the back, right-back Maxi Pereira and centre-half pairing Diego Lugano and Diego Godin look nailed-on. Pereira’s forages down the flank could be key and boosts his prospects of earning attacking points, while the latter duo are likely to appeal in games that reward defensive contributions – those three will set you back 5.7, 5.6 and 5.4 in FantasyiTeam respectively.

Sitting in front of the back-four is Arevalo Rios. A tenacious ball-winner, his battling abilities are fundamental to Tabarez’ counter-attacking approach – a 4-4-2 formation would allow either Diego Perez or Nicolas Lodeiro the chance to start alongside Rios (available for 5.4 in in FantasyiTeam), though a switch to 4-3-3 would diminish both of the latter’s prospects of starts.

Further up the field, Cristian Rodriguez seems to have established himself as a regular over the qualifying rounds. Ousting Diego Forlan from the first XI, Rodriguez featured in the first-team in 10 of the final 13 matches on the left flank and found the net on three occasions. He started just twice for Atletico Madrid in La Liga this term but still looks set to retain his berth in Tabarez’ XI and comes in at 6.2 in FantasyiTeam.

Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani bring a real touch of class up front. Notching 17 times between them over the qualifiers, their ability in and around the box allows Tabarez’ side to sit back and rely on one, or both, snapping up chances – neither are cheap at 10.4 and 10.0 in in FantasyiTeam, and if Suarez fails to make it, there’s no doubt the Uruguayan’s chances will take a significant turn for the worse.

The Long Shots

Espanyol’s Christian Stuani seems to have made the right wing role his own in recent matches. The 27-year-old (coming in at 6.9 in FantasyiTeam) started each of the last three qualifying games and with a couple of sub appearances toward the end of the group phase, chipped in with two goals from just five matches. He was his side’s second top scorer in La Liga last time around, producing six goals in addition to a trio of assists.

Finally, a possible absence for Suarez could well see Diego Forlan return to the first-team fold. The veteran failed to start any of the final five matches across qualifying, suggesting he will mainly be utilised as a substitute towards the latter stages of matches but if the Liverpool striker is ruled out or continues to struggle, Forlan, who is priced at 7.8 in FantasyiTeam could be handed the spot alongside Cavani up top.

Couple of important goals in the CL and he'll be deemed worth it.

Odd that they got rid of Carroll as they didn't want a big centre forward because it didn't suit their style

He isn't a big centre forward anymore. He plays off the front feeding the CF or wing players. He is a cutey player than people give him credit for.

Well, you need a squad to balance Champions League as well as Prem games.

Lambert's FPL value will be gone though once he signs for Liverpool.

Feel for Southampton though, looks like they're going to get picked to pieces now that Poch has gone

    Boruc
    Clyne Fonte ........ Chambers

    Warde-Prowse Davis ......

With about £80m to fill in the gaps.

What about that Aurier chap. Rumour mill has Arsenal favourites for him. In terms of FPL I want to see a nailed on RB for Arsenal. Reason being the LBs are too injury prone and the CBs will be at least 6m, if not 6.5m. Hopefully this will make the RB 5.5m and good source of CS and maybe attacking returns

Aurier had an amazing season, really attacking defender, I think he finisshes with 6 or 7 goal and a couple of assist . Top goalscorer defender

Put this in perspective with the fact that Toulouse play in 532 and their Full back play really forward

Lambert is expendable though, I should imagine (and truly hope) it'll take a lot more to pry their younger and more prized assets away.

That said if they do lose a lot of players I fear for them. Southampton are not really a buying club, they are much better at nurturing talent and bringing it through. It could well turn into a big money mess ala Spurs.

Soton have finished above Villa the last two seasons and have progressed massively while Villa look to be waiting for their turn at relegation. So I don't really get the Championship team bit to be honest.

European football but he's had a shit season so he may well need another good season with a smaller team to encourage someone playing European football to sign him. Spurs would not be a bad shout but I'm not sure how interested they are in him.

Villa have flirted with relegation twice now.

Villa have been in the EPL forever and Southampton have flirted with it from time to time there is no comparison between the clubs. Southamptons team is in the process of being dismantled whereupon they will likely be relegated also.

I just don't see how A) Villa would sell to Southampton and B) why Benteke would go there?

Villa may have flirted with relegation but it was never a serious threat either season and with a small bit of investment they could easily be competing in the top half of the table again imo. They are a much much bigger club than Southampton are or ever can be.

History means little here, it's about team performance. Villa are in real trouble and need huge work despite how "big" a club they may be.

Soton, if they get a good manager, will continue developing strong and as I say Benteke needs another good season with a smaller club to prove he's not a one season wonder.

Southampton were rubbish the year before last and only made three signings and got a good manager (lovren, wanyama and osvaldo). Now they look like they will lose the three signings they made plus the stars they nurtured.

They do not have a club profile that allows them to sign top quality players so how are they going to replace all these players? I think if they do lose these players they are in real trouble next season.

I hope they are not in trouble next season as I have actually liked Southampton since the le tissier days, well run small club with the odd period where they have a decent team. The only way Benteke gets another good season is by pulling up his sleeves and making it happen at Villa I'm afraid.

Yet Villa finished below them even with Benteke on fire. Second of all, no Soton player has left yet, Rickie hasn't even left, While some may it's wrong to assume all will. They need to sort that out definitely but Villa are piss poor at the moment, if they don't sort it out I can see relegation next year.

Villa ain't "piss poor" either. They have some relatively interesting young core starting to take form and have remained patient and if they continue to trust this current project despite their patience certainly having been tried a lot, they should eventually be better next season.

Not saying there was anything amazing there, but direction rather towards climbing a bit further away from relegation than to being relegated.

Of course, they are vulnerable. Take Benteke out for majority of the season and I can see them relegated like that.

See my issue is that I like what they're doing with the younger guys but I think the balance is wrong, it's too young in some respects. To be honest with you, regardless of injury if Benteke doesn't fire next season they could still be in a battle. A couple of good signings is all they need, just a couple of guys with a bit more experience to calm the younger guys. Then they'll be okay but they seem highly reluctant to do that right now.

Obviously, if Benteke has a bad season, that is as bad as if he's injured.

True, the team is maybe too young, too little experienced, and even these youngsters, they ain't exactly future world beaters. They are good young players who will become PL level players, but they ain't new stars. Mostly at least.

They brought in some experience in Grant Holt though. 😆

And that's fair, I think they annoyed me slightly because I dislike seeing a team like them perform as badly 😛

Oh yes Grant, keep forgetting he was there 😆 Kozak has a future I think, he could be a good one! But that's exactly it, I simply think there's TOO much onus on the young players, I like a young team but some experienced players have to be there to help them gel properly.

Dino. So'ton is one of the financially most healthy clubs in England. The money they make on their players they can invest on new players. And if they invest it wisely, they may end up winning in quality. They will make good money with those players now.

They also seem to be able to rely on their academy.

They have been progressing well each season since going down. Now is a potential turning point. The direction they take from here remains to be seen. It can be a mess, again, or if they act wisely, they can step up yet another notch. But it's pretty open right now.

Exactly, they've even said they have no need to sell any of their current crop of players, their financials are all in good order so I have no idea where this came from :/

Of course they don't _have_ to. It's another thing how wise it is to cling to players if they want to leave and good money is offered.

It's the good old policy of clubs that are not the biggest: any player is for sale if a big offer comes in, and if players want to go, it's better to let them than to see their price drop during the time they don't want to play for you.

In other words, if these players want to move on, which they might _not_ want of course, this may be their best time to sell them. The fact they don't _have_ to sell just allows them to pull the prices higher. That most of these players are English allows them to make even more money on them. And it could be possible to replace good half of them with less expensive and just as good (or better) foreign players.

So, that they would be selling almost their whole first XI of course comes from the fact that their players are right now so much wanted by other clubs.

There's huge demand for them definitely. But I can't actually see them losing loads of players, a few will leave no doubt for high money but I think they'll still be a strong squad next season. Of course, I may be wrong, perhaps they'll make disastrous decisions but I think a few of the players are in fact reluctant to leave. Lovren for example I'm pretty sure just came out and said he didn't want to leave.

That's good news for them. He would be difficult to replace, and they will get more money from English and attacking players.

From other important players Schneiderlin hinted towards a departure when asked about not making it to the final 23 player squad of France. He just said that he's been thinking that maybe he'd get more visibility in this regard elsewhere. Or something like that.

And they might face some issues more like that but a good few of them seem less committed to saying they want out. The most that even Lallana has said was he would like to play in the CL "some day", it's hard to gauge currently how many really want to leave.

Financially healthy is great for the Liebhers but katerine wants rid of the club and wants as much money out of it as she can for her family. She does not want to invest anymore and that is the main reason Cortese left and why I assume Pochetino left also. If they manage to sell the club then they might be able to invest some of the money from player sales in the squad but if not then I'm afraid it will be a tough season for saints.

So'ton is, however, in a bit of potential trouble, as they lost the guy behind their success. And I don't mean Poche. That was just the first casualty. Wait for others to follow.

But that's all still hypothetical. It is also possible that they'd build on what Cortese established there.

Possible? yes. Probable? definitely no. The new owner wants to sell and get as much of their family money back out of the club as possible.

But you see, Dino, they would have to make these big mistakes to fall down. Villa already is down. They need many seasons of brilliant work to get up. Southampton just have to avoid errors to stay there.

It is not about making mistakes with saints cnn, the owner has already made them. Cortese is gone, Pochetino is gone and she has said she won't be investing any more money in the team. All she wants is a quick sale or an asset strip and take as much of their family money that was invested back from the club as she can before she manages to offload.

I think their positions are remarkably similar as both have owners that don't want the clubs and don't want to invest in the teams so it will all come down to whoever buys each club this summer. If either or both clubs are still in the hands of the same owners I think both could be in for a tough season but villa not having lost any players would be in better shape than Southampton if they lose theirs without finding adequate replacements.

Newcastle are bigger than Villa but that didn't save them from going down in 2009.

Villa have been flirting with relegation and to be honest with you they could easily end up doing a Fulham, especially if they get a run of bad injuries and some equally bad luck.

It could quite easily happen Nomar, it has happened to city, leeds, man utd and other big teams in the past but that still doesn't take away from the fact that Villa are a bigger club than Southampton and you don't see players leaving bigger clubs for smaller clubs unless they have failed at the bigger club.

I'll grant you Villa has been neglected by it's owners over the last 20 years or so but in the early 90's Villa had a much bigger stadium than Newcastle and of course this lead to much bigger average attendances.

The term sleeping giant is often used in football and while it is a term you can use for Villa it is not one you can use for Southampton.

Ps the last cup Newcastle won was in 1955 and the last league in 1927, since then Villa have won one league title, one CHampions league, one European Super cup, one FA cup and 5 league cups plus a FA Charity shield cup.

You know where you park travel your horse and cart 😉

Quite a debate opened up here about Villa v Southampton.

I agree with Somalion that I'd rather be in Southampton's shoes than Villa's right now, but that can easily change.

This time last year West Londoner's would probably have rather been in Fulham's shoes than QPR's. Probably not the case today, barely a year on.

As commented already, Southampton can go one of two ways now. They could fall apart or they could continue their success with new players and a new manager.

As for Newcastle, I'd class them as having a bigger following than Villa. Villa have had more success but it doesn't mean they are a bigger club. They've just been a more successful .

Got a big enough backyard so the horse and cart can park there.

Between Toon and Villa there is nothing in it imo, Villa have planning permission to build a stadium as big as toons but they need to get some serious investment in the squad. When MON was there Villa park was always full but as with anything when the football on show isn't great and their is not chance of silverware apathy sets in. Villa have as big a potential fanbase as toon if not bigger but it just needs someone with the vision to buy the club and make it happen.

Loads of room at villa park for that cart, mind the silverware though 😛

Almost no chance of that at utd, his hands are tied with Holland due to the weak fb's he has at his disposal (thats what I heard anyway) so he has tried a 5-3-2 system but I doubt he will use it in the world cup. His favoured formation will be a form of 4-3-3 or 4-5-1 or 4-2-3-1 whichever you want to call it.

This is a good read on the formation/style he likes to play and the players he likes in each position http://livelifeunited.com/imagining-louis-van-gaal/

Agreed. He has for his whole career preferred 4 at back, so why should he suddenly change his mind? Truth is, Holland lacks quality at back, so he has to make up for that with quantity. And we'll see if he eventually goes to World Cup with 5-3-2 or whether he moves back to his preferred 4-3-3.

We may have to play him next season because no one will buy him on the wages he's on. Harsh on Green whose contract is up now but the fact that we have called him back from his loan spell at Toronto suggests that the club intend to play him.

Just feel for Green who actually was a big part in us coming back up. He was immense against Wigan and Derby in the playoffs.

However, both on big wages so hard to justify keeping both, especially with FFP rules now.

We need to keep as much of our squad together as we can. Mistake we made last time was jettisoning all the players that came up with us. They were the ones that cared.

That said, we have a lot of players out of contract now and we had a few loanees who have gone back to their parent clubs.

You could say that but the mistake was really not getting enough of the right quality of players in. There is no point having players that care like Clint Hill when epl standard players make fools out of them. Harry will see QPR right next season imo

        Then maybe Schmeichel will be.

Let's face it, if he's 4.5m, every man and his dog will have him.

Quite possibly. Imo they need to either rise the price of the cheap gk or bring down the price of the expensive ones (I think they should do this) to make people think about putting in the exp gk's again. It is two easy to just pick the two cheapest gk's and rotate them

Why? A promoted team, and a lack of clean sheets. You could put Courtois in the Leicster goal and he probably wouldn't get many points.

Unless I am severely underestimating the Leicster defence?

There's a nice piece on their defence here: http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2014/05/13/the-promoted-clubs-leicester-city/

3rd best in the league, resilient, and didn't concede in their last 4 games.

Schmeichel's performances in particular were impressive, and he's making quite a name for himself. Should get a nice haul of save points.

And of course there will be casuals picking him purely because of his surname 😉

Bound to get tons of interest. I hope you're right and he's 4.5m though!

Nice one. I jus think, wasn't it Hull with the best defensive record last season? And Their gk was 4.5. I'd personally be surprised if he was 5.0m, despite his reputation. Also, bearing in mind he may have a big name, the team doesn't.

Means **** all in the Prem though.

Cardiff had a good defence for the Championship too but look at them in the Prem, even with one of the best keepers too.

Hard to tell how any promoted team reacts to the Prem until they get there and start playing games.

I quite liked him at West Brom when he played. Kinda like a poor man's Zabaleta at times.

As much as I like Gus I think next season could be just as tough without the right additions to the squad. By offloading some of Di Canio's players they could easily bring in a couple of decent players. Someone like Scott Sinclair that could be gotten cheaply or even Barry for the defensive factor

I reckon they'll continue as they did last season, they need to stay in the PL for a few seasons, they aren't in a position to spend big and would still be relatively vulnerable if they abandoned his system in my view.

The Sun rules aren't bad but the due to the poor design, I can't see it being my main game.

You know how Dream Team points work by now so we’re only making subtle changes for our Brazil extravaganza. Scoring points during the group stages works exactly the same as 2013/14 and Road to Rio, but there’s a twist in the knockout stages. Points will be doubled from the last 16 onwards – except for the Player Rating and Star Man points as we don’t want to inflate our journos’ egos any further! A win bonus will also be introduced after the Group Stages to spice things up.
Our Match Centre lets you keep track of how your team, and also every player that did not make your final cut, are doing in real-time. You can follow all the match action with commentary and tot up your Dream Team points as you go, all the while questioning why you made the team selection you did.
      GROUP STAGES
      All Players

Why are there hardly any players on The Sun game??

Looking at the defenders. Only two listed for USA, three for Switzerland, one for Algeria.

      WTF!!

Why is James McCarthy 5/2 to join Utd?

      Have I missed something?

Haven't really been paying too much attention to the World Cup articles, had playoff final on my mind.

Would this be a decent Sun Dream Team? (haven't signed up yet)

      Karnesis
      Boateng, Azpilicueta, Godin, Coentrao
      Di Maria, Dzagoev, Reus
      Neymar, Costa, Martinez
