World Cup 2014 – Team Analysis – Nigeria

The final team in our Group F analysis is the African representatives, Nigeria. Stephen Keshi’s side kick off their campaign against fellow outsiders Iran on Monday June 16 at 8pm before taking on Bosnia and Herzegovina five days later at 11pm, prior to a showdown with group favourites Argentina on Wednesday June 25 at 5pm:

Road to Qualification

The Nigerians topped a four-team group that also included Malawai, Kenya and Namibia by five clear points. Scoring seven times and conceding just three, they were then drawn against Ethiopia in a two-legged play-off last autumn and cruised through by an aggregate 4-1 scoreline, having emerged victorious both home and away.

Most Starts Vincent Enyeama, Godfrey Oboabona (8), Efe Ambrose (7), Victor Moses, Elderson Echiejile, John Obi Mikel, Ogenyi Onazi (6), Ahmed Musa (5)

Most Goals Emmanuel Emenike (3), Victor Moses (2)

The Key Targets

Since clinching their qualification, Nigeria have won the 2014 African Nations Championship – a tournament predominantly for players plying their trade in their native continent – and drawn a trio of international friendlies. A 2-2 draw against Italy back in November caught the eye, with a goalless stalemate against Mexico preceding last week’s draw with Scotland, where many of the squad’s fringe players were given a chance to impress. The Africans will also be looking to improve upon their performances in last year’s Confederations Cup, where a 6-1 win over Tahiti was followed by back-to-back defeats at the hands of Italy and Uruguay.

Tactically, Keshi’s side are set up in a 4-3-3 formation, with the pace of the wide players in a front three key to their counter attacking ploys. Between the posts, Vincent Enyeama is nailed-on. The Lille stopper arrives on the back of some outstanding domestic displays and racked up clean sheets aplenty in Ligue 1 – available for 4.9 in FantasyiTeam he can expected to be called into action time and again.

Efe Ambrose and Elderson Echiejile (5.0 and 5.1 in FantasyiTeam) are the first-choice full-backs. Ambrose is a regular for Celtic and played 38 times in the league, whereas Echiejile featured just five times for French outfit Monaco after moving during the January transfer window and will perhaps be a little lacking in match sharpness. At the heart of the back-four, Chelsea youngster Kenneth Omeruo looks set to partner Godfrey Oboabona, (4.9 in FantasyiTeam) though Joseph Yobo was recalled to the squad in March and offers a more experienced alternative.

Keshi will have two sitting midfielders in front of his defence, looking to break up the opponents’ attacking forays and quickly distribute the ball to the attacking quartet. Lazio’s Ogenyi Onazi (5.2 in FantasyiTeam) seems odds-on to grab one of the places and with John Obi Mikel (priced at 5.1) fielded in the most advanced role of the midfield trio, the remaining defensive slot could go to Ramon Azeez, who played 30 times in La Liga for Osasuna last term.

Further up the field, the trickery and speed of Victor Moses and Ahmed Musa are pivotal to the Nigerian’s penchant for quick transitions. Despite a lack of game time on loan at Liverpool, Moses is regarded as key for Keshi’s side and is number one spot-kick taker – giving him the edge over CSKA Moscow’s Musa, who scored seven times in the Russian top-flight in 2013/14. Moses is the cheaper of the pair, coming in at 5.3 to his fellow wide man’s 5.4 in FantasyiTeam.

Through the middle, Emmanuel Emenike is a man in form and arrives on the back of a season which saw him produce 12 goals and nine assists in 28 appearances for Turkish side Fenerbahce. Available for 6.8 in FantasyiTeam, he missed all but three of the qualifying matches due to injury, yet still finished top scorer with three strikes to his name.

The Long Shots

Back in the squad after repairing relationships with Keshi following a public row at the start of last year, Peter Odemwingie could offer the Nigerians a number of alternatives. Utilised mainly on the right at Stoke, he finished the season with five goals and a pair of assists in his final nine league appearances – Odemwingie (6.7 in FantasyiTeam) could also be fielded through the middle up front or in “the hole”, if Keshi wishes to drop Mikel into a more defensive-minded role.

If they don't change it as has been pointed out CHellini will be the top scorer. The top goalscorer will get few pts in comparison and everyone playing it will be cheering recovered balls not goals and assists.

This does mean that one of the FFS community will almost certainly win it as we are the ones that know what recovered balls are. But for the average punter the game won't make any sense. Why they will ask is Gary Cahill scoring more than Messi?

        I know right.
And that doesn't make much sense at all, as well. A defender who plays 3 matches and doesn't get a CS scores more points than the top goalscorer? That rule doesn't even make the game a right yardstick for choosing a top manager.

I think they have to change it. I'm fairly certain the rules were lost in translation and must mean that there are pts for recovered balls but didn't specificy how many. 1pt for 3-5 recovered balls makes it much better.

With no change they will soon see the error of their ways when after the first round Australia defenders are the top scorers and Ronaldo is near the bottom - even with a hattrick.

But can they change it in the middle of a game?
I mean, since we are playing it, given there is no change, we will get 8-9 top defenders in the 23.
But then, if they decide to change the rules, we will be worst affected, since there aren't any transfers during the group stage.

1 point for every 2 recovered balls is the way to go I think. The top defenders glcan keep up with the top goalscorers and a cdm like busquets gets an extra 3 points per game. Makes everyone on a somewhat level playing field.

Something like that but the CL game gave 1 point for every 5 RBs.

With 1 point per RB, and several players getting 10-15 RBs in every single game, that's like scoring a brace or hat-trick every single game, plus clean sheet and attack points on top. And block points as well, though I don't have any notion of the expected numbers for those.

What are peoples thoughts on Ross Barkley? The fact he scored 6 goals and didn't get a single assist all season to me shows his limitation as a player.

People waxed lyrical about that goal v Newcastle but to me it showed all his failings as a player. There was at least three times when he should have passed it to ensure a better chance of his team getting a goal than him taking it on further.

I can almost guarantee you that the likes of Iniesta, Xavi, Mata, Silva, Cazorla, Oscar, Ozil etc would all have offloaded that ball to long before Ross actually scored and until he either learns when to pass and when to take a player on he will never reach his potential imo.

I think it is a flaw with the British and Irish coaching systems that we constantly produce players like this, it is almost like a player only gets noticed if he is scoring shed loads of goals and doing everything on his own and the guy who could be the next top class no10 like any of those mentioned above is cut from the youth team never to be seen again as he doesn't score enough.

I do think the kid has unbelievable natural talent and if he was brought up in the German or Spanish coaching system he would already be one of the best in the world.

Most definitely as I think RM is probably the best manager alongside Wenger and Rogers (and possibly Pellegrini) to show him where he is making these errors. I expect him to start making better decisions the longer he spends working with RM and I even saw evidence of it as the season wore on even if it didn't lead directly to assists for himself.

The main advantage of Spanish and German leagues are that they have B teams participating in the second division. This ensures that the youngsters get the experience needed in the respective leagues before making it into the first 11.

That's just plain wrong. I can only assume you support a big Premier League club and see short-term benefits for it.

        Number of B team matches played by German squad: Draxler = 0, Ginter = 0, Götze = 0, Kroos = 13, Müller = 36, Özil = 0, Podolski = 2, Reus = 6, Schürrle = 0.

Increasingly players make their way up the German youth system and go straight into the first-team squad of a Bundesliga side.

German teams have been told two months ago that they can withdraw their B teams from the pyramid and quite a few (Leverkusen, E. Frankfurt etc.) have done so as it no longer reflects the way they bring players through.

Reserve teams are instead made up of players who will never make the grade and who instead clog up the German football pyramid with unmotivated, sparsely attended performances. They are universally loathed by lower-league supporters.

To show you how absurd the system is, and how unfair it is on lower-league supporters of real teams, Bayern Munich could have picked Claudio Pizarro at the weekend to help their 'B' team gain promotion to the German third division in a play-off against Fortuna Cologne.

Haha someone definitely needs to, this cockamamey idea of having B teams to increase the production of young talent is ridiculous imo.

You can loan the players out to get first team experience but the problem is they are not being coached well enough at youth level. I think there has been reforms put in place recently so we won't know how much of an impact that will have for another 7/8 years I guess but B teams definitely doesn't seem to be the way to go imo.

England's problem is the amount - and standard - of our coaching:

Number of elite coaches in Spain: 12,700
Number of elite coaches in Germany: 5,500
Number of elite coaches in England: 1,161

68,000 (!) English coaches not officially recognised by FIFA as we follow our own (substandard) coaching pathways.

          +1,000,000 PB.

As per above I reckon this is the single biggest reason our best and most natural talents don't have the basic core skills required to make it at the top when they graduate from the premiership academies.

The ratio of Uefa B, A or Pro badges to person playing football in a country is as follows: Spain, the World Cup holders, has 408,134 players, giving a ratio of 1:17. In Italy, the ratio is 1:48, France it is 1:96, Germany 1:150 and even Greece, the Euro 2004 winners, have only 180,000 registered players for their 1,100 coaches, a ratio of 1:135. In England it is 1:812!!!

Have a look at this article it shows how there is also failings in the delivery of Uefa coaching courses in the UK with a very low pass rate for the courses.

I agree entirely. If Dyke and his panel had just made this point about coaching, then everyone would have agreed with him. This deficit is acknowledged within the game at all levels from grass roots upwards.

Instead we had this absurd 'B' team argument, with some ridiculously selective usage of statistics (particularly attendances at B team matches in Germany) and a clear 'big team' agenda with minimal benefit for the national team.

Anyone responsible for producing this report shouldn't be involved in sports administration at all. Greg Dyke, Rio Ferdinand, Danny Mills - why on earth are *they* shaping the future of our football?

If we are talking FF, I think he is a good prospect because he goes for goals and plays direct. Hype might dictate a slightly higher fee, i don't know. If he's more than 6m he's not really a consideration unless Martinez nails him on.

If we are talking WC, its too early for him to take up a major role.

If we are talking about him in general, I think he's a fantastic prospect and has a brilliant coach. I have every faith that, as you quite rightly point out, those flaws in his game will be worked on and the polished player will emerge in his early-mid twenties.

While we're at it, just check out this 'little Englander' gibberish that Roy Hodgson has just told the Ecuadorian press ahead of the friendly: "You have to excuse us that we can't have same expertise [on S American football] as you have about English football. The only chance we get to see South American football is when we go to a World Cup."

      1) No, you can have the same expertise, England - you just need to stop being so smug & insular and bother to prepare properly.
      2. No, a World Cup is not the only chance you get to see South American football. Do better. The world doesn't revolve around English football, and hasn't done since the 1920s.

I know there has been a lot of din surrounding the prospects of Candreva in the hole in a 4-3-1-2. But anyway, I haven't seen him around for long in the Italian set-up.

What makes us so sure two strikers will be fielded, especially after the omission of Rossi? It could easily be 4-3-3 will Cerci and Insigne on the wings?

I'm not playing world cup fantasy football but I wouldn't be surprised to see marchisio playing as an attacking mid from a midfield three. Most underrated Italian player imo

Well, he'll be a part of the midfield three, that's what all say.
If I was actually playing 3-4-1-2, I'd play Verratti in the middle three, and Marchisio in the hole.

Would be a shame if the McD points system writes off the importance of strikers. So many good forwards at this World Cup.

Neymar, Mandzukic, RVP, Costa, Martinez, Bony, Suarez, Cavani, Sturridge, Balotelli, Messi, Higuain, Aguero, Dzeko, Ronaldo, Lukaku.

Almost too many to choose from really

It's just a week before the WC, so I thought I'd rather create a team in any of the games.
Chose Fox Australia for its simplicity, and similarity.

      Courtois, Davari,
      Alba, Blind, Debuchy, Aurier, Kozlov,
Muller, de Bruyne, Rodriguez, Valbeuna, Pjanic,
      Neymar, Ronaldo, Lukaku

      Looks decent?

You've chosen the right players, but not the right formation.
Sterling and Lallana will surely play like traditional wingers.

And Ox instead of Sterling, I'm with your team.

I think Sterling has played his best football for Liverpool when he's played centrally behind Suarez and Sturridge. It's possible Lallana might struggle playing so centrally though, possibly Wilshere in his place.

I see no success for any team playing traditional wingers, leaves far too much space in the middle. Much better to use overlapping full-backs and use a DM almost as a third CB imo.

I don't think GJ is good enough going forward or defensively, Lallana doesn't have the legs or the defensive aptitude, and Gerrard has neither the legs, defensive ability or defensive intelligence for that position.

              Hmm not sure I agree,
There is no alternative to GJ. He's as nailed on as it gets imo.
Lallana vs Wilshere I'll agree is a tight debate, I think Roy might go Wilshere because he's a bit better defensively but I'd rather watch Lallana play.
Gerrard has played that role all year and done it better than anyone in the league imo.

On the right back situation, I would rather play Jones. Much better defensively, and GJ doesn't offer anything going forward. Against Peru he was struggling to even control the ball.

Liverpool have played that way, but it took time (that Roy doesn't have) to get the squad playing in their attacking way, and it has left them extremely exposed at the back. Gerard is good on the ball, but he hasn't had to do the De Rossi role filling in between the centre backs because of advanced full backs.

On top of this, we don't have a star player like Suarez to make things happen.

If we played 3 in midfield (whether Lallana or Wilshere), I would much rather 2 wingers and 1 striker than a 2 top diamond.

I won't get into the Rooney debate again, but I would certainly leVe him out. Would prefer Sturridge as a 9, Lallana as a 10.
