Our World Cup coverage moves onto Group G now as we turn our attentions to Germany. Joachim Low’s side kick off their campaign with a very testing clash against Portugal on Monday June 16 at 5pm before facing a couple of opponents that will surely earn them significant Fantasy investment – a clash with Ghana five days later at 5pm precedes their final group game against USA on Thursday June 26 at 5pm:

Road to Qualification

Germany coasted to qualification by topping a group that also included Sweden, Austria, Republic of Ireland, Kazakhstan and Faroe Islands. Winning nine and drawing one of their 10 fixtures, Low’s side caught the eye going forward and scored 36 times – netting at least three times on nine occasions – but failed to impress defensively. Ten goals conceded and a mere four clean sheets doesn’t instil much confidence, with Sweden, in particular, proving difficult opponents, scoring four and three times over their head-to-heads.

Most Appearances Manuel Neuer, Mesut Ozil, Thomas Muller (10), Philipp Lahm (9), Per Mertesacker, Sami Khedira (8), Jerome Boateng (7), Marco Reus, Miroslav Klose, Marcel Schmelzer, Toni Kroos (6)

Most Goals Mesut Ozil (8), Marco Reus (5), Mario Gotze, Miroslav Klose, Thomas Muller, Andre Schurrle (4)

Most Assists Mesut Ozil, Thomas Muller (4), Philipp Lahm, Marco Reus (3)

The Key Targets

After impressing in the final third during qualifying, Lahm’s side have surprisingly struggled in recent friendlies. A 1-1 draw with Italy preceded back-to-back 1-0 wins over England and Chile before an experimental Germany XI registered a goalless home draw with Poland in the middle of last month. Sunday evening’s 2-2 draw against Cameroon once again underlined their defensive frailties ahead of the tournament.

Despite a move to central midfield for club Bayern Munich, Philipp Lahm will be fielded as a right-back in Low’s familiar 4-2-3-1 set-up. His raids down the flank and delivery from out wide provided a trio of assists during qualifying and will bring Lahm, who is available for 6.4 in FantasyiTeam, onto many radars. Arsenal’s Per Mertesacker and Bayern’s Jerome Boateng are Low’s preferred central defensive partnership – the Gunners defender scored twice during qualifying and also notched the winner against England and comes in at 5.9 in FantasyiTeam to Boateng’s 5.8. At left-back, Erik Durm looks set to get the nod after Borussia Dortmund team-mate Marcel Schmelzer was eliminated from the final 23-man squad on Monday – priced at just 5.4 in FantasyiTeam, he’s the most budget friendly of Lahm’s likely defensive starters.

In central midfield, both Bastian Schweinsteiger and Sami Khedira have been hampered by injuries over the last few months. The latter has only just recovered from months on the sidelines with a knee problem and, whilst he was preferred to Toni Kroos when fully fit, there are surely question marks over his match sharpness right now – Kroos was more productive over the qualifiers, serving up three goals and a pair of assists and, like Schweinsteiger, comes in at 6.4 in FantasyiTeam.

Further up the field, Low’s selection policy over the group stages suggests that only Mesut Ozil and Thomas Muller are guaranteed starters in the four attacking slots. The Arsenal man is also first-choice spot-kick taker and played a part in 12 of his nation’s goals over the qualifiers, courtesy of eight strikes and four assists, whilst Muller mirrored Ozil’s creative endeavours from his role on the right in addition to scoring four times and is slightly more expensive in FantasyiTeam, at 7.5 to 7.4.

The Long Shots

With numerous options for the left wing and lone forward role, Low’s starting line-up is difficult to predict. It seems likely that Mario Gotze, Marco Reus and Andre Schurrle will compete for the role out wide, with Julian Draxler perhaps restricted to sub duties, though the aforementioned trio, along with Miroslav Klose, are all capable of being handed the central striking role, too.

Reus started more qualifiers than any of his rivals and subsequently comes in at 7.6 in FantasyiTeam, though Gotze – available for only 6.5 in FantasyiTeam – has been named in the first XI in four of the last five friendlies and seems to have the edge in the pecking order. Both players started against Cameroon last week, with Reus out wide and Gotze handed the chance to lead the line.

Schurrle, along with Klose, is classified as a forward in FantasyiTeam and is the cheaper of the pair at 8.0 to 8.4 – the Chelsea man started the last two qualifiers and notched four times, though has since featured in the XI in one of the last five friendlies, though climbed off the bench to notch against Cameroon last week.

How are your transfers going to play out because you could leave Messi out until his game and save the money on another?

The whole transfer timing is confusing me atm, but yeh I've heard theres a pretty good system for getting the big names in at the right times without taking up all your budget.... do you know if there is anywhere on here that explains it well?

I'll give it a go. If anyone spots a mistake please feel free to correct me:

You get 3 free transfers per GW. As long as you make a transfer at least 10 minutes before the start of a game, you can swap 1 player who has already played for another yet to play. Doing this you get points for both players.

(e.g. If your original XI contains Neymar, after the Brazil v Croatia game you can sub him out for RVP who plays in Spain v Holland the next day (any time before 7:50pm 13th June) and receive points for both. You can then swap RVP out for Messi in the same way. (Doing this means you're essentially getting a team of 14.)

However, this isn't so smooth sailing because Brazil have a DGW in GW1.

So you could start with 3 Brazilians in the squad, don't transfer them out and leave them in for their 2nd GW1 match against Mexico and get their DGW points. (You make no transfers at this point)

As soon as Brazil v Mexico finishes, you can then use the transfers to transfer out the 3 Brazil players for 3 Russian or Korean players (as Russia v Korea play after Brazil v Mexico) meaning you get 17 players (11 original + 3 extra for 2nd Brazil game + 3 Russians). Remember that Brazil don't play in GW2 so you'll need to transfer them out at some point.

At the end of the GW (i.e. after Russia v Korea) you get 3 fresh transfers. So you can either keep the Russians/Koreans in the squad and transfer swap 3 other players, or transfer them out at the beginning and play GW2 with a team of 11.

There are different tactical approaches to this game (e.g. start with a Brazilian - transfer out for another like Messi and then bring back the Brazilian for their second game) but hopefully this clears it up. Mastering the transfers will be the key to doing well)

P.S. (You can also buy a 4th GW transfer if you're into that).

Mentioned by someone on a few pages back, but Liverpool are in talks with Bayern Leverkusen to sign Emre Can

Looks like (as most of us know) it's Mourihno NOT wanting Fabregas

Luke Shaw virtually a done deal to Yoonited

As I didn't really get any response I'm going to try one last time

Any Fox Sports World Fantasy Mini-leagues I could join?

Just created a team there :

    Howard/Courtois

    Koscielny, Kolasinac, Lichtsteiner, Schaar, Jagielka

    Valbuena, Gerrard, Hazard, Willian, Mueller

    Lukaku, Messi, Dzeko

I guess it's decent for a first draft. What do you think?

9 of his 11 pens last year were in the second half of the year showing just how lucky Gerro owners were imo.

Liverpool were no more dangerous post xmas than pre xmas yet they got a lot more pens. To get 10 pens (sturridge also took one) in half a season is unrealistic and very unlikely to ever happen to a team again imo as it would equate to 20 penalties for a whole season when the average for a top team over a whole season is 5-8ish

On average, teams get something like 3-6 penalties in one PL season, always a couple of clubs getting a few more. Tells how lucky Pool was to get 10 in half a season. For comparison, the second most penalties during whole season were Chelsea and City with 7 each, and for example Arsenal only got 3.

there are good stats on penalties here:

                  😆

It seems there's always two at least. He was suspended due to picking a red card in the first match.

Seen that Deschamps has taken that first leg was a negative reference point and that second leg as the positive reference point (that dropped Nasri out of the squad) Koscielny's position in their hierarchy came seriously down in those two matches. He wasn't nailed on before it, he has been omitted from the first XI many times during Deschamps era despite being fit and on bench, and he certainly is not nailed on now.

There is no nailed on player in that defence. If you want a sure shot, it's Lloris.

Do you honestly think France can win World Cup 2014 with Koscielny at back? No matter who they select in their defence, I wouldn't put my money on them winning the tournament.

France, like Belgium and Netherlands, clearly are gathering experience to their young players. Their aim is in 2016 and 2018.

well seeing as you're happy to be pedantic towards others i'll do the same, kos was in fact struggling with injuries in late nov/dec, what i said was true, he missed three games if i recall, nowhere did i say it was the reason he didnt play in that game.

& where did i say he was nailed on? another essay you've written for no reason

& who cares if he was injured or suspended? the reason i replied was because it seemed pointless using one game as an example of when he wasnt picked when he wasn't even eligble for the game, regardless of the reason.

Did it hurt that much that I pointed out that you don't actually know the thing you are teaching others about?

If you don't know something, don't try to teach it to others.

Plus, I wasn't being "pedantic", I was making a fecking joke - you know, "Kos is nailed in your dreams" you get it? - but apparently you guys have no sense of humour. Or maybe your wit didn't suffice to recognize the joke.

Kos was _suspended_ at the time, due to red card in the first match against Ukraine. That sure did not rise his stock.

If you haven't followed the team's games, as you apparently haven't in this case, do not claim that you know who's nailed on or otherwise important for the defence.

You are acting an expert on this team, yet you clearly haven't even watched their matches, nor are you aware of the defence being rotated heavily during the whole Deschamps era. Telling him to be assured about Koscielny being nailed on is a bad advice if any.

i didnt mistake it, i just felt it very pedantic & a bit patronising to start linking meanings to obvious words like 'nailed' when it's obvious that the intial 'in your dreams' joke was a really bad one & more than easily interpreted as purely 'you dont know what youre talking about'

you're just back-tracking as usual & the fact youve carried on & on & on in such a defensive manner over tiny little details like missing a rubbish joke or whether someone was injured or suspended for a gamewhen just shows how pedantic you actually are

& i wasnt teaching anything, i was questioning the need to post a link to a team that didnt consist of kos when he wasnt even eligble for the game, the reason i thought he was injured was cos he was injured right around that time... & its something you still havent answered, instead you focus on minor little details like bad jokes & why the person wasnt eligible which as i've already stated is irrelevant to the point.

so again, why link a france game to show that kos isnt always picked when you knew full well he wasnt eligble?

Varane being injured at the moment, Koscielny is the safer pick of those too. Varane will probably make it to the tournament, as his injury doesn't seem serious, but generally it's a wise policy to avoid picking injured players.

Beware that defence, though. There seems to really be no nailed on players there, except for Lloris - but I like that Romero punt of yours, will probably be a differential. Evra likely to be the safest pick because he is an experienced player in an inexperienced squad. But watch him having one shocker, and he's off to bench.

The other question is too difficult. Flip a coin.

I'm playing in a work fantasy game where the goalkeeper gets 5 points for a clean sheet and a defender gets 3. If you could pick any keeper regardless of price, who would you pick to get the most CS's?

I guess it depends on the transfer policy in the league.
If unlimited after groups like most games, then I'd definitely go the Swiss keeper/Lloris or Courtois.

What if Godin and Suarez have scored lots of points?

Will you do the same transfers after they have both played?

I think it's difficult to speculate on transfers in this game as they are more like substitutions...

You'll want to swap out your low performers...

The idea is that you use the transfers as a way to keep the expensive players in rotation. That way you can benefit by having Neymar, Messi, Ronaldo, Suarez etc... without going over budget.

Maybe, instead of getting in the A+ defender in a team, get a B defender who will likely start and benefit from their price rise later to help with the knockout stages.

Hopefully they will vs Costa Rica. Doubt they'll repeat the feat vs Italy and England though...

I see this game as a fluid game of percentages and punts. Take the points and move on...

Valbuena is an assist machine, so will sit well in a 4-4-2. Don't need five at the back long term, and covering Brazil, Germany and Spain with heavy hitters should suffice long term until the quarters at least. Just fancy Godin with his recent form for the first game. Messi is a no brainer. So whatever the Uruguayans do later it shouldn't matter!

3 at the back is the way forward imo.

-1 per goal is nasty. Could easily result in defenders scoring 0.

Although no deductions for yellow cards doesn't make it too bad.

I'd pick 11 players who you think will have decent games. Then use the 3 transfers to get rid of players who

      a) have performed badly
      b) don't have a really easy game in the next round (or 2)

Last pre-season most people were going nuts over Soldado (and got rather lucky with those opening penalties) but a lone voice was talking about how he didn't think Soldado would adjust to the prem.
