As always on a Friday lunchtime, we analyse the PlayON player price list ahead of tomorrow’s 10.45am deadline. Below we offer a couple of picks per position: one essential weekend target and a left-field alternative for your consideration.

This weekend there is a £1,000 Guaranteed Pot on offer at PlayON where you can enter up to three different teams into the game.

Goalkeeper – Steve Harper
Hull’s back-up keeper is set to earn his first start of the campaign after Allan McGregor was ruled out for a month with a shoulder injury. Coming in at only 6.9m, Harper looks a great budget option as the Tigers play Hull host to Crystal Palace tomorrow afternoon, with save points likely to heighten his points potential. West Ham will be hoping for a first clean sheet of the season this weekend at home to Queens Park Rangers. Sam Allardyce’s side have been untypically porous so far and their backline options are subsequently priced on the kind side – Adrian is available for just 7.6m and faces an attack that has scored just once on their travels to date.

Defender – Alberto Moreno
The Liverpool left-back is our defensive punt for the weekend, ahead of a home encounter with West Brom. Rested for the midweek trip to FC Basel, Moreno – who sets you back just 8.1m – is set to return to the Reds’ starting XI and, although his side are still struggling for clean sheets, the Baggies have scored just one away goal this season. Moreno’s raids down the flank could make the investment worthwhile alone, as he goes in search of a second league goal in six appearances. At only 7.1m, Neil Taylor looks an absolute steal for Swansea’s home clash with Newcastle. The home side have conceded just once in front of their own fans, whilst the Magpies have drawn blanks in all three road trips, suggesting a clean sheet could be on the cards. Taylor’s recent assist against Chelsea also underlines his potential at both ends of the pitch.

Midfielder – Will Buckley
Handed his first full 90 minutes for Sunderland last week, the summer signing from Brighton looks set to retain his role after impressing manager Gus Poyet. After scoring 19 in 96 appearances for Brighton, Buckley will be keen to get his first goal in the top flight as the Black Cats entertain Stoke and, at just 7.7m in PlayON this week, the winger also allows funds to be utilised elsewhere in the team. David Silva is our essential midfield pick. The City playmaker reminded us of his ability by serving up a pair of assists at Hull last weekend and with a trip to Villa up next for the champions, the Spaniard – who costs 10.3m – offers an in-form route into Manuel Pellegrini’s side.

Forward – Diafra Sakho
The West Ham striker has now scored in each of his last four starts across all competitions, including recent strikes against Liverpool and Man United. With the Hammers welcoming a QPR side that have conceded 10 times in three away matches this season, Sakho could be amongst the goals yet again for Big Sam’s side and looks excellent value at just 9.4m.Leicester’s home clash with Burnley brings Leonardo Ulloa into contention. The Argentine has netted five times in six appearances for the Championship winners and, crucially, has scored in every home fixture – coming in at 10.5m, he’ll fancy his chances against a backline that shipped four goals to West Brom last Sunday afternoon.

Head over to www.playon.co and get picking ahead of the 10.45am deadline tomorrow morning.

Because he is already a differential with his ownership and there is someone owned by over 60% in better form and with equal chances of scoring imo

I don't think much of it at the moment, just because Costa is a fairly unusual scenario. I'd captain Aguero over any other player.

          In answer to your question:

Because Costa is the league's top performer.
Because Costa has the potential to scold you badly.
Because Aguero is actually owned by a surprisingly low percentage and he's a natural goal-scorer - almost enough of a differential in itself.

            • 15 Years

True although Aguero is a better player than Costa (but Chelsea are playing well and he's their sole striker)

That's debatable. Aguero is a classier player, but Costa is actually a more clinical finisher than Aguero as his stats over the past few seasons prove.

Aguero. If you're not going to captain him in this fixture then you really should've have spent 12m on him. A point someone else brought up earlier.

      - Aston Villa on the decline, especially their defence
      - City's attacking form on the rise
      - Aguero as well, been scoring singles lately...a brace or hat trick will pop up soon
      - Concrete Vlaar out is a major miss for their defence

      - Costa captain is boring.

Good points. My only question is whether Vlaar is definitely out, just that he seems to have gone from being "out" last weekend to a "big doubt" this weekend. Manager mind games?

Nah, I put my sensible hat on and had a bit of a think. If I do it, it'd be for a hit. Lampard is he scores is likely to get a single goal rather than a brace. So that's Lampard goal (-4) vs Siggy Blank. I gain a single point that way and that's only if Siggy blanks. Not worth the risk, unforunately.

I don't get the "what's the point of spending £12m on Aguero if you're not going to captain him this week" argument. There is enough value in the game to accommodate Kun in our teams. Welbeck as the 3rd striker, Siggy as the 4th midfielder along with 3 premiums, Bertrand/Clyne/Chambers to go with a premium Baines/Ivanovic. Aguero is a differential and arguably the 2nd best striker to own and that's enough at the moment.

Aguero will get his time as captain (I've already given him the armband this season), but this week I genuinely feel Costa is the better option.

Poisson estimates of each team keeping a clean sheet.

This is based on the teams previous goals for and against performance at home/away.

Note that poisson is reported to overestimate the chances of lower scores when predicting football matches, so be wary of using this for betting purposes.

However it could be useful as a high level guide for comparison purposes.

With this in mind the Swansea estimate does look ridiculously high, this is clearly wrong but its because Swansea have only conceded 1 at home this season and Newcastle have scored none away.

    (Excuse formatting)

    Swansea 85%
    Liverpool 51%
    Leicester 37%
    West Ham 37%
    West Brom 37%
    Stoke 37%
    Man City 37%
    Sunderland 31%
    Southampton 31%
    Man United 26%
    Chelsea 26%
    Tottenham 22%
    Newcastle 22%
    Everton 19%
    Aston Villa 14%
    Crystal Palace 14%
    Arsenal 14%
    Burnley 11%
    Hull 10%
    QPR 10%

    The case for Siggy©

    Pros
    + Newcastle at home
+ Likely to play "in the hole"
+ Has FPL history plus a goal and 4 assists this season
+ No CL game earlier in the week
    + 4th highest owned player

    Cons
    - Has blanked in his last 3
    - Costa and Aguero are considered safer picks
    - Costa owned by practically every active team

I think the main reason why Siggy will be overlooked with the arm band is his form. Also, as the highest owned player, Costa is the safer pick, no question. But taking a closer look at form shows that while Siggy has blanked in his last 3, he has not been helped by circumstances Swansea have found themselves in.

    che - 2 pts
SOU - 2 pts (Bony sent off in the first half)
sun - 3 pts (Rangel sent off)

For me, there are valid reasons why Siggy has gone from returning 29 points in his first 3 games to 7 in his last 3, which do not necessarily suggest a dip in form.

I'm not trying to persuade anyone here. Captain Costa or Aguero, they are very good picks, but up against a woeful Newcastle at home this week, I think Siggy is still a very good option.

I had Costa(c), Sterling(VC) up to Wednesday, then had a total re-think! It's only when you give serious consideration to a player and are not ruled by fear of what a higher owned player may score, you see the possibilities 🙂

    2. Reedy
      • 15 Years
      11 years, 10 months ago

I agree. Generally he might be more likely to provide assists than score himself, but against Newcastle he should be getting plenty of sight on goal.

I've gone for Aguero(vc), if City were at home it'd be different but even with Vlaar out against City I see Siggy as the more enticing option.

      1. Reedy
        • 15 Years
        11 years, 10 months ago

And the amount I paid for Aguero is irrelevant IMO (I've seen that suggested as a reason to captain him). You should always pick the player you think will score the highest, and ignore everything else.

Definitely. Price generally brings more assurances of returns but only when allied with form (Hazard is a case in point).

Interesting if Vlaar is out. I think I want to see Aguero score more than one before I captain him.

I've captained him twice already; last week it worked, GW3 it didn't. If I'd gone for Siggy then (he was my vc) I'd have had a 22pt captain. Lesson learned 😉

Yeah, Stoke at home, right? I brought Aguero in that week and captained Jovetic. 1 point later... 😀

Am waiting for the right time to captain Aguero. Could be this week lol. There are some great choices this week.

😆 😀 I haven't got him though. As mentionted above, I put my sensible hat on and had a bit of a think. If I do it, it'd be for a hit. Lampard is he scores is likely to get a single goal rather than a brace. So that's Lampard goal (-4) vs Siggy Blank. I gain a single point that way and that's only if Siggy blanks. Not worth the risk, unfortunately.

I do have him in my doubles team though. Managed to get him in for a FT 😀

Been a member the past 2 seasons and trying the non-stats approach this year based on watching games.

If anything, I should be more conservative in my approach to get better at this game! Too many punts, particularly with my captain choice 😉

Still not convinced... he delivered last week but was outscored by viable alternatives (Pelle, Aguero). The reason why Suarez needed to be captained is not only was he not blanking but he was very regularly getting braces or at least a goal and an assist...

I have Costa only because everyone has him. I would maybe captain him if he hadnt played 90 mins midweek. Now i wont. And when he scores only once he gets no bonus points so far. Plus he gets a yellow every 2 games. 6 or 5 points for a captain is ok but not outstanding so i ll chase something better than that. We cant compare him to Suarez, he got easily 2 bonus points at least when he scored.

I agree, slightly surprising but I imagine making the move permanent shows both Falcao & the club commitment to each other. Kinda relaxes the pressure on him to have a storming season as a loan-signing to earn a full contract IMO.
...wonder if he's alleged new contract still sees him earning 250k/w

Tough decision for the defence, bench 1 or 2 of these:

    A) Moore (BUR)
    B) Clyne (tot)
    C) PVA (STO)

Who to bench between Welbeck, Dyer or Pelle?

I don't see Welbeck scoring big at the bridge. Dyer could quite easily notch a goal or two against Newcastle. Pelle on form and has arguably better fixture than Welbeck. So I'm thinking Welbeck. Thoughts?

Also, any risk of Mourinho gazumping us by starting Remy instead of Costa?
