The Digest – Gameweek 8

Southampton’s display at Stamford Bridge serves notice of their potential ahead of some kind upcoming fixtures. Meanwhile, Sergio Aguero and Alexis Sanchez’ simultaneous return to form turns the Fantasy landscape on its head.

The Player

A five-goal blitz in just 20 minutes against Newcastle last Saturday served a telling reminder of Sergio Aguero’s talents as the Argentine cast aside his early-season toils emphatically.

There’s no doubt that Aguero had tested our collective patience. At a time where many mid-price frontman were flourishing, the City striker’s single goal and assist over the first seven Gameweeks were a major concern.

You only had to look at the underlying stats for reassurance, though. Between Gameweek 1-7, he was firing an effort every 19.7 minutes – almost on a par with last year’s 17.9 minutes per shot. Even his frequency of key passes (82.2 minutes compared to 80.1) was more or less identical.

Whereas last term, he netted 17.6% of his efforts on his way to 26 goals and ten assists, Aguero had scored just 4% of his shots before Steve McClaren’s boys paid visit last weekend, spurning all but one of his previous 25 attempts.

There were hints this was coming, though. Three goals and four assists over the previous international break for Argentina. Eight attempts and a late winner in City’s midweek Champions League win in Wolfsburg. Aguero was getting the chances.

In a season that’s proven unpredictable, Saturday’s 50-point armband haul shows just why Aguero is the one real must-have frontman for most Fantasy managers around these parts. With Bournemouth, Norwich and Villa in the next four Gameweeks alone, the bandwagon is in full flow as those who’d braved the Magpies match without him scramble for a belated piece of the action.

The Team

A 3-1 win over Chelsea at the Bridge heaped further pressure on Jose Mourinho as the Saints moved into the top half of the table for the first time this term.

After a slow start, blighted by a number of first-team departures over the summer, Ronald Koeman’s side have finally settled into their groove. The St Mary’s outfit have racked up eight goals in the last three matches, which also includes clashes with Swansea and Man United, and look well-stocked with form options to consider. Impressively, Graziano Pelle has played a part in ten (five goals, five assists) of their 13 goals for the season, whilst Sadio Mane’s two goals and five assists in four starts perhaps gives him the edge over Dusan Tadic in the centre of the park.

At the back, the return of Ryan Bertrand and addition of Virgil van Dijk has helped Koeman’s men rediscover the resilience which saw them concede just 33 times last term. Aside from their 3-2 reverse at home to United in Gameweek 6, Southampton have conceded a combined total of two goals in five of the last six Gameweeks – both came from dead-ball situations, a Gylfi Sigurdsson penalty and Willian free-kick.

Encouragingly, the about-turn in form arrives at a time when the fixtures smile very kindly on the Saints. Over the next eight Gameweeks, Koeman’s side are afforded four eye-catching home clashes (LEI, BOU, STO, AVL) and also travel to Sunderland and Palace. Investment at both ends of the pitch could well pay off, then, as they look build momentum on the back of their Chelsea destruction.

The Talking Point

Aguero’s return to scoring form arrives at a time where Alexis Sanchez has also banished his own barren run to rack up the goals for Arsenal. The Chilean followed up last week’s hat-trick at Leicester with a brace against United to soar up the Fantasy standings after a similarly sluggish start to 2015/16.

Taking the midweek Champions League matches into consideration, the South American duo have scored six times apiece in their last three appearances. Few, if any, top-flight talents can match that explosive potential and it’s fair to say that their recent resurgence has shaken up the Fantasy landscape.

Those who filled their 15-man squads with mid-price and budget form players, thus choosing to ignore one or both of Aguero and Sanchez, now face a major restructuring program if they are to bring the pair on board. Indeed, it’s no real surprise that the duo lead the way for transfers-in this week in the FPL game.

In this most unpredictable of seasons, there’s a reassuring sense of normality settling in once again. Those who have steadfastly held onto both and kept faith in the underlying numbers have been finally rewarded – it’s perhaps no coincidence that this recent turnaround has helped the Fantasy Football Scout leagues climb the leaderboards, an indication of our community’s faith in the big hitters.

Yes, it’s a belated victory for the so-called “template” approach. A triumph that’s been somewhat tainted by those preceding weeks of frustration and uncertainty but we’ll take it anyway. After suffering for the first two months, you could almost say we deserve it.

Am I all set with this team?

    Myhill (McCarthy)
    Kolarov Cresswell Dawson (Gomez, Oxford)
Sanchez De Bruyne Payet Mahrez (Sako)
    Aguero Pelle Vardy

One FT. 0.6 in the bank. Thinking of replacing Sako, Oxford, or Gomez.

I'd replace Oxford. He isn't getting any game time and you never know if Gomez might with Klopp.

Starting team looks great but as already said nobody on your bench is risky. Maybe Sako to a cheap playing 5th midfielder to give you some spare funds for next week. I would wait till after the internationals though as nothing pressing.

Bottomed as always, I'm very good at that...

If you had 10.3m to get to defenders to sit alongside Kolarov, Richards and Targett (I know, I know, more pressing matters at hand), who would you go with? I've found a couple of options:

    A) Bertrand and Davies/Walker
    B) Mert and Cedric
    C) Monreal and Martin
    D) Toby and Cedric
    E) Something completely different....

It didn't turn out to be hugely costly points-wise, but it did waster a transfer...

Suppose I could also throw in the signing that landed my with Pedro in the first place. Jumped on to the bandwagon from Payet. It took a fortnight to hurt, but then I missed his brace.

Quite a few candidates here actually, that tell a great story about my excellent season so far. None absolutely disastrous but pretty bad.

      - Selling Alderweireld on gw5 WC (7-6-9)
      - Selling Payet gw4 (3-16-5-8-10)
      - Shaw/Pedro gw6 -> Sakho/Silva (-4)

Taking Wilson out on wildcard wasn't too smart (did a similar thing last year with Costa before his hat trick and brace).

After a couple of years of lurking I have finally taken the plunge and decided to sign up as a member! Having won my main mini league for the last 3 seasons relatively comfortably I am already facing a 75 point deficit and to make matters worse my 12 year old son is 39 points ahead of me! Any changes recommeded to this team, 0 FT and 0.0 ITB?

    Fabianski

    Clyne Wollscheid Kolarov

    De Bruyne Ayew Payet Sanchez

    Martial Bojan Aguero

    Subs: Westwood Richards Targett

Defence is poor but I'm not sure I can justify a -4 with such a big gap to catch up. All feedback appreciated and I will try and do the same for as many other people as possible.

Thanks for your feedback and the welcome. Wollscheid actually came in this week to fund Depay to De Bruyne as I had the exact cash he looks the most cheap nailed defender and Stokes fixtures aren't too bad. I think medium term I will do Clyne to Alderwield and Richards to Dawson.

have you considered taking your son's internet privileges?

failing that, i'd probably wait until later on next week as there may be injuries you need to deal with after the international break, but other than that i think the team looks ok! leicester and soton attack is worth getting a hold on, if injuries force your hand.

As a Sanchez and Aguero owners, which would you prefer to hear?

    A) that they're travelling with their respective national teams for the international matches despite having minor injuries. This could aggravate their injuries.

    B) Or pulling out of the squad like Coutinho and Janmaat. This would prevent them from playing but could also mean that the knocks they're carrying are already a bit serious.

Which scenario gives them a better chance of starting next game week?

I think its good that they're able to travel with the team, but hope the international managers use them sparingly. Sanchez is the bigger worry because of his importance to Chile and having Brazil and Peru.
Aguero could easily warm the bench with the number of forward options available.

Would love to know your views. Thanks.

I'd rather they played for the teams.

Imo if they are fit they definitely start. This is the start of a very tough world cup qualifying cycle for the South Americans which has got much more difficult over the years. Almost no easy games there anymore, possibly apart from Bolivia at home.

I'm not too worried right now, Pellegrini actually came up with some sort of comment in response that said about how Aguero shouldn't get many muscle injuries compared to how he used to due to a 'different preparation' (can't find the quote sorry) which actually made me feel better about himj overall haha! The knock should be no problem. Also Alexis should be fine, he seems to heal like Wolverine!!

Payet & Mane > Wally (in FPL terms)

I have a feeling that Payet may be more consistent over the season as the main man for the Hammers, but Mane looks in great form at the moment and in the short term I think he'll be outscoring Payet.

    Hello lads!

Was pretty happy to climb to 98.8k thanks to Kun's performance. I need to sort our my defence. I suppose I could take a hit as I don't have any free transfers.

    Defence:

    Butland McCarthy

Kolarov Francis Martin Richards Lovren (don't ask why he's here)

I was thinking of Lovren -> Bertrand or Cedric. Is there any better defenders out there? I have 1.4 itb.

You couldn't bring yourself to write 99k??

Bertrand is a decent shout, longer term. For a hit, though, you need to be pretty sure you're gonna make you 4 points back (i.e. get a clean sheet), and Leicester have been scoring every week.

He tries to score all the time. Silva is far more unselfish. Happier to assist, and often assists the assister.

Silva's gola tally was unusually high last year. He may continue in that vain. I'm gambling that KDB will score more

Wenger is a good manager..not the greatest but he has management skills to the hilt...also makes money for the owners :p

Yeah he may not be a fergie but he is still on another level to rodgers etc. The way mourinho has brainwashed the media and chelsea fans in particular is astonishing

^This. It seems like he thinks his main worry is Wenger, somehow. Would be well-advised to focus on his own team rather than on another team's manager.

Best 9mn max GK rotation to have going forward On WC?

I know Butland + Hennessey is good for even less price but heard Speroni can spoil the party...

    Thoughts on more options??

I'd go Gomes and Butland (I assume you discount Myhill at 4.7m)

        Do they rotate well??

I was keen on Hennessey+Howard...play Hennessey 2 weeks, then Howie all the time

I have Howard+Myhill for the former's great run coming up. But wouldn't rely on Henny as part of any rotation since he may be dropped at any point

What to do with my free transfer, £0 in the bank:

    Begovic Elliot
    Kolarov Cresswell Dawson Williams Nyom
    Sanchez KDB Payet Mahrez Hoolahan
    Aguero Diouf* Berahino

Concerns over Diouf's ability to stay fit and Berahino's chances at playing full 90mins.

Also Cresswell currently not worth his price tag, same with Begovic but wondering whether i should just stick it out.
Otherwise looking at doing Cress > Bertrand or something like that
OR i could do Cresswell + Berahino > Berty + Vardy for a hit

You cant do Diouf to Vardy so maybe Ighalo, and next Berahino to Vardy if no other issues.

Yes, it's a week to late for Diouf to Vardy, could have done it for a 0.2 profit last week.

Was unsure of how long Ighalo fever would last due to his price, maybe he is the best option for now. Thank you!

Perfer to go with form myself, but was tempted by Glenn Murray instead of Vardy, as a Wilson replacement last week.

Just heard the news on Diouf's mother as well so guessing he wont be playing for a while anyway.

What about Bojan instead of Ighalo? They are now the same price

    a) Pedro & Targett -> Mane & Bellerin [-4]
    b) Pedro -> Mane [free] (means playing Richards [che] and Francis [mci]!)
    c) Gomez -> Dawson [free]

I know it may be a little premature, but for the other FFS'ers who like me are planning a GW11 wildcard are you already looking through the different permutations?

Everton and Manchester United have incredible runs from gw11-gw18, so I'm intending on doubling up on each with a defender and a mid/attack from each side.

I think Aguero+ one of De bruyne/Silva/Sterling is essential.

Southampton have a great run gw11-gw13 as do Newcastle so think a wildcard should be reflective of that and have coverage from these teams....I am however wary of doubling up on too many teams as I like having a side that reduces variance.

Does anyone see anything much wrong with this? I'm a little worried about Sanchez's non inclusion, however Arsenal's nice run coincides with a slight dip in the quality of Southampton's fixtures so I will probably at this stage downgrade Kolarov for a 4.5 and bring in Sanchez for Mane.

    Thoughts please!

    De Gea Hennessey

    Kolarov Coleman Janmaat Moreno Nyom

De Bruyne Mata Mane Mahrez Wanyama

Aguero Lukaku Ighalo 0.9 in the bank.

I'd rather Howard and Rojo as a way to fund Sanchez. Or even Jajs instead of Coleman

Best 4.5million defender combos for Next 10 GW?

I can only think of 2
    1) Nyom(WAT) + Francis(BOU)

    2) Cameron(STO) + Hangeland(CPL)

Apart from these any more good ones??
