Scout Notes – Gameweek 13 – Monday

Jermain Defoe grabs a late winner for Sunderland at Selhurst Park. Black Cats duo Billy Jones and Costel Pantilimon produce their second double-figure hauls in four appearances as Palace fail to score for the third time in the previous four Gameweeks.

Defoe Wins it for Black Cats

Jermain Defoe’s 80th minute strike granted Sunderland their first road win of the campaign. The 5.2-priced frontman – who was stationed alongside Steven Fletcher in a 3-5-2 set-up – capitalised on some risible defending from Crystal Palace centre-back Scott Dann to record his second goal in as many starts. The Black Cats’ tough schedule (STO, ars, WAT, che, mci, LIV) and his rotation risk ensure that Defoe remains a peripheral concern on the Fantasy scene, whilst his withdrawal due to an ankle problem is also a real concern for Sam Allardyce.

The Wearsiders’ triumph at Selhurst Park also produced their second clean sheet in four outings. Having assisted Defoe for the winner, Billy Jones scooped all three bonus points to bring home an 11-point return – the full-back has racked up 29 points in five appearances under Big Sam but is now set for a one-match ban after earning his fifth caution of the season.

Costel Pantilimon (4.8) tallied 10 points by virtue of two save and bonus points but is unlikely to attract investment when the likes of Boaz Myhill (4.8) and Jack Butland (4.7) are more enticing options in his price bracket. That being said, home ties against Stoke City and Watford in the next three Gameweeks are conducive to shut-outs.

Palace Home Toils Continue

Last night’s late defeat means that Alan Pardew’s side have now lost seven of their previous 11 meetings at Selhurst Park. Moreover, they rank third for shots inside the box conceded in home fixtures (62) and have managed just six goals themselves, illustrating their struggles at both ends of the pitch. As such, those Fantasy managers in possession of Newcastle United assets might be tempted to hold fire on any sales – despite their one goal in four matches – ahead of the Magpies’ trip to south London next Gameweek.

The Eagles will feel aggrieved not to have earned a result against Sunderland, given that they amassed the third most attempts (19) of any team in the Gameweek. Connor Wickham’s return to the starting line-up harvested three shots but zero on target, exposing his inevitable rustiness.

Yohan Cabaye fired off more than double the attempts (five) of any other Palace midfielder but ultimately carded his fourth blank in succession. Considering that the Frenchman has bagged just one goal and assist from open play this term (complementing his three penalties), his 15% ownership may be considering their options once the weekend home encounter with Newcastle has passed.

I have owned 6 weeks at various times during this season and he has averaged 1.83 points per game while I owned him.

He has averaged 6.42 points per game when I didn't own him.

A bit miffed at Coutinho injury. I brought in Barkley as fifth mid in order to play him and bench Mahrez

If anybody can draw a blank out of Leicester it's United and I reasoned 2 million Mahrez owners could be staring at a blank week....

    Oh well....Coutinho > bench.

Did you watch him vs Newcastle? He was electric. Got a feeling he will hurt United a lot. We have always historically struggled against direct running at our back four.

Oh, not disputing his quality...just that their might have been a chance to play the odds against one of the best defences in the league this season.

            He was on about defence.

Those two are the only nailed on ones,

I've gone for DDG as £6.7m is a bit too rich for my blood.

This is the team I plan to have in 3 GWs.

    Butland Hennessey
    Rojo Toby Moreno Dawson Morgan
    Sanchez Coutinho Ayew Mahrez King
    Aguero Kane Lukaku

    0.6 itb.

    Would you change anything?

      Looks good -

Defence maybe a touch light and I would be worried about Rojo's gametime

Also not sold on Ayew, although he has been doing surprisingly well considering Swansea's terrible run

Could maybe use that 0.6 itb on defence, although good to have some flexibility with the midfield

Thanks for the advice. Yes will look at defense. Ayew is producing every time I think it's his last chance. Will eventually go but for now keeping given those home fixtures for Swans.

      Opportunity lost?
For those gone without Kane and opted to bring in Aguero instead, has their judgement been blinded by price increases/past performances, when in fact the obvious pick (non kane owners) was the in form Kane, or can Aguero match him over the next few weeks and turn out to be the better pick?

Some may argue both but without dismantling your team and hits this would seem difficult right now, obviously a wild card would help if Kane/Aguero was your preferred choice.

Not sure right now, I suppose I had eliminated Kane from my thoughts due to early season form. Let's see how games go I think Harry will find Chelsea a tougher game and City will hit back after that thrashing.
Kane can't be ignored now nor can Lukaku imo, it's between Aguero and Vardy right now but Vardys value and enablement can't be ignored.
We can't have them all it seems and we all know an Aguero haul is around the corner.

Aye, I'd like to hear their opinion on Vardy too as I've firmly set up base in the "time to sell" camp.

Kane has outscored him over the last five weeks, Lukaku is only a few points off despite having played both United and Arsenal in that time, Aguero is Aguero and Ighalo provides value, form and fixtures. So why keep Vardy now that Leicester's fixtures nosedive?

Considering Arsenal's poor defensive record without Coquelin,is it time to ditch the Arsenal assets which also gives us the chance and funds to double up on United? Or monitor in the next 3 fixtures(nor,SUN,avl)?

What are you taking about? Since breaking into Arsenal team on 28.12.2014 Coquelin only missed two league games. One was 0-0 aginst Sinderland at home and the other was 2-5 win away against Leicester. If these two games are big enough sample for you then ok. Please do a research before posting something isn't backed by any evidence.

          2014-15
0.7 - Arsenal have conceded 0.7 PL goals per game with Francis Coquelin starting compared to 1.2 without him this season. Shield.

Arsenal in the Premier League since 2014/2015:

          With Francis Coquelin:
          P34, W23, D5, L6 Win% 67.6

          Without Francis Coquelin:

      1. Which teams will keep the most CS during the Christmas period?

      2. Out of the those teams (discussed previously), which defender will you be looking at to bring into your team?

What's the deal with Azpilicueta? Is he a rotation risk or should he start from now on?

Chelsea have a nice run coming up but he isn't worth 5.9 (same as Bellerin, more than Coleman/Alderweireld) if he isn't nailed.

Related rough: Azpiliceuta 1 minute cameo costs me 5 points from a rare Morgan CS.

With the good form of forwards like vardy, kane, lukaku, bringing in Aguero clearly stretches our budgets in a way that makes it difficult to have anything but a bench fodder 5th mid. It seems that silva is due back this weekend. Being a proven fantasy asset and priced 3.2 million cheaper than aguero, Would it be smart to consider a KDB+ silva double up instead of bringing in aguero and dismantling team structure? this would allow for a strong midfielder in the 7 million range to help us navigate the christmas schedule and have great city coverage as they can be rampant.
Since city seem utterly useless without kompany at the back, a double up on defense is highly unlikely at any point in the year. With rotation being possible over christmas, it would be very painful to see 13.1+ million on the bench while a sub 5 million bench player takes the field.

Bringing in Smalling for -4 at 11.43am on the Saturday for Skirtel...

I had a terrible Saturday, was on 24 points (the lowest in all my MLs, one having 42 players in it). Was going to the Spurs game on Sunday so captained Kane and also had Alderweireld. Seeing them score about 10 yards away from me within 10 minutes of each other was just beautiful.

On a seperate non-FPL related note, I also went to Millwall v Colchester on Saturday with my grandad (ST Holder), in a game which Millwall won 4-1. I had put a fiver on Suarez first goalscorer for El Clasico at 5/1. Didn't get round to picking up my winnings until I got to WHL on Sunday. Decided to stick a fiver of the winnings on another 4-1 win at 25/1. Drove straight back to Holland after the game, so 150 notes for beer over Christmas when I'm next back in Blighty.

First bit of luck so far. Payet + Pelle > for Lanzini + Kane (C) for free . Would've captained Vardy if I'd not have done it so 7(C)+1+0 =15 vs 13(C) +7+7=40 am now 25 points better off with 4m itb and don't have to worry about Pelle falling off the tightrope this week!

Took a hit to do Kolarov, O'Shea and Bego to Rojo, Mertesacker and DDG. For a 4 point hit.

Kolarov gets as assist, O'Shea and Bego get clean sheets. Meanwhile the premium United and Arsenal defences both concede.

Did I mention the 4 point hit?

Two free transfers - Pelle and KDB out for Ozil and Aguero - GW gain of 11pts. (14 v 3)

Started Simpson (10pts) and O'Shea (6pts) over Moreno and Dawson.

      Started Barkley (19pts).

      Captained Lukaku (24pts).

      GW total 85pts.

Rough- benched BARKLEY and his 19 points.

Reason- Planned to bench Payet v Spurs before he got injured as I had a strong front 8. So I was going to replace PAYET with bench fodder to make way for KUN this week. But with so many players flagged I replaced Payet with BARKLEY so that I had a strong sub. Played Mane ahead of him after much deliberation.

Smooth- I guess at least I have Barkley ready for the upcoming fix + price rises.

      A bad Gw though, only 46 🙁

Played Mane, Delofeu, Sanchez, Mahrez, Kane, Aguero and Vardy in attack - and benched Barkley = -19

      I've got a rough

I'm convinced I'm the current holder of a fpl record.

No active player who captained Aguero in Gw8 has a lower captain score than me.
Lots of people getting the captain wrong, but out of 3 mill plus.... I hold the record.

      13 weeks. 108pts. (50 from Agureo GW 8)
      The other 12gw = 58 pts.

Would love if any budding script writer out there could confirm my theory.

It might be a sh1t record to have, but I'll take it at this stage. You couldn't get lower than that if you tried 🙁

is there an "ideal" percentage of total points that your captains should produce over the season? 30%? 40%?

It would be interesting to know the avg, etc. for this...

I'm on 174 captain points out of 675 total or about 26%, Avg captain score = 13 per week.

the top ranked players will have a much higher percentage.
Captain score is what separates the top 100,000. Its all about the captain.
My team is doing quite well but my captain sucks. He is only contributing 15.9% of my total.

Took a -4 for Mata & Pelle -> Ozil & Lukaku. Got a bit lucky as I made those moves on the Sunday evening BEFORE the international break, and took my chances with injuries (which paid off) to avoid the price rises.

Result: Captained Lukaku so a net gain of 24 points, and gained 0.7 in value for the two players.

Experiencing the lows of him not starting, the high of him coming on, Phil Jones going off injured thinking I dodged a bullet, only to keep his clean sheets and walk away with 9 points was a massive kick in the teeth after two weeks of no shows.

Smooth: After doing Sánchez to Özil and McCarthy to DDG early in the international break I took two extra hits (-8) to bring in Lukaku and Kane for the injured Bony and out of form Pellè. These four transfers gained me an additional 30 points (22 after hits) which ensured cup wins for both my side and my FIFFSA side as well as a nice green arrow in the OR.

          Özil +6 Vs. Sanchez
          Lukaku +12 Vs. Pelle

Three gameweeks ago, I transfered in Jones over Rojo for some Man U defensive cover after a couple of consecutive starts for Jones. I therefore missed out on two Man U clean sheets and 3 bonus points. This week I decided to take my medicine and transfer Jones out for Rojo. Then, Jones does start, gets subbed off before the end, and pick up 9 points compared to Rojo's measly 2 points! I can only hope now that Rojo keeps his place in the team from here on in.

I also benched Ayew for his 13 point haul. But thankfully there is some smooth: I transfered in Lukaku for Martial and captained him.

So, this week was smooth even though I got a red arrow. I took a 24 point hit which paid off massively, captaining Kane was a huge bonus.

          Players in with scores - Lukaku (12), Özil (8), Lanzini (7), Alli (5), Agüero (6) and Simpson (10) that's 48 points.

Players out with scores (including transfer cost) - Vardy (11), De Bruyne (6), Sissoko (5), Payet (0), Pellè (5) and Dawson (6) that's 33 points.

From taking a 24 point hit I am 15 points better off with a good team set for the long term, sometimes you have to take risks knowing full well you could suffer a huge loss.

Hit me with some reflections on Wards performance yesterday guys.
An an owner, I was worried about Kelly, but he started over him.
He did manage to create some chances, one of them dangerous.
Never got to shoot on balls on corner clearances.
However, his link up with his winger/Zaha, was terrible.
And he was not that great in defense. Several guys ran through him, KdB's ginger little brother among them.
Plus any other ref would have given him 2-3 YCs
        So,
A - Zaha is a selfish mofo who can't pass the ball, only good for dribbling and getting pens
        or
B - Ward is in real danger of losing his spot to Kelly, due to (among other things) my reflections above.

Hey all, I have a 5 minute window with people around me in meetings! Panicked and hit the WC button (drunkenly) on Saturday night, already lost Vardy for Aguero which could backfire hugely. Really struggling with cobbling a team together, currently on:

        DDG/Hennessey
        Bellerin/Moreno/Dawson/Ward/Nyom
        Sanchez/Ozil/Mahrez/Lanzini/Alli
        Aguero/Kane/Lukaku

Not convinced by it at all, not sold on Lanzini, and am I holding on too Sanchez for too long? No time to really check stats, any help appreciated.

After a great run that's taken me to 11k, this WC could be a huge mistake...

Hi mate - not sure you needed a WC tbh but I'd be looking at a Liverpool midfielder somewhere there - not sure how you'd afford that though. Without Vardy boosting the funds I'm not sure there's a lot of changes you can make there except maybe Coutinho/Firmino for Sanchez and then upgrade Lanzini. Nawt much else.

I really didn't need a WC, my team looked good, completely panicked with the Aguero goal and price rise. Yeah Sanchez to Firmino was something I was looking at, problem is I can't see anyone I really want to upgrade Lanzini to.

Just leave as is and in a few weeks can downgrade Alexis and upgrade Lanzini if need be. Eriksen, Coutinho/Firmino, Barkley (meh) all look like relatively good options.

Maybe have a play around with a couple of the defenders I would say.

Very similar to mine that I've been contemplating for over two weeks.

Defence looks fine, you've got Bellerin and Moreno most weeks with Ward giving cover, and Nyom switching to Dawson in 3 weeks time. Maybe look at switching out Bellerin after his 3 good fixtures

That midfield is what I've got now, but will probably go with Erikson and one of the Pool boys rather than Sanch and Lanzini

Front line is the same as mine

As a Spurs fan Eriksen is hugely frustrating. He'll ping in a free kick from 25 yards one week and bag an assist the next but the week after can't even beat the first man from a corner. But he can be dangerous when he's on. He looked miles better with Son running beyond at the weekend, which I said he would weeks ago. It depends how Spurs will shape up and who Poch will choose. Lamela will come back in on Sunday but Alli is suspended so Son will probably keep his place.
Eriksen, if you don't have Kane is a good move especially around Christmas time. He's the fittest player In the team and he's guaranteed set pieces.

On the presumption that you check back later:

Defence is good for the xmas period, apart from ward. I'm not convinced that he's nailed. I'm probably going to move him on.

Midfield: not convinced on Lanzini/Alli. Is that the best that you can do? probably, if you've got no more funds. you could downgrade ddg to butland, but that doesn't really help.

          Forwards: Top draw

Either go with Ighalo or take a -4 and downgrade a mid to upgrade Pelle to Lukaku

Is Sanchez and Vardy to Ozil and Kane worth a -8?

I know the initial reaction will be no but I was planning on doing this next week for a -4 and have realised due to price changes this may not be possible, I have the exact money now on more price changes and it will be a -8 next week anyway as a 3rf player will need changing to free funds.

Or am I just panicking due to leaving 25 points on the bench this week and falling down my MLs?

Don't panic just yet. Sanchez is due a haul according to the stats tables. Admittedly Ozil will probably make the assist. But Sanchez is due and when he delivers he usually explodes.

Is there no other transfer you can make to allow for Kane.

            Butland (Hennessey)
            Kola VVD Bellerin (Evans Simpson)
            Sanchez KDB Mahrez Delofeu Lanzini
            Aguero Lukaku Vardy

Not that I can think of?
