Scout Scribbles – Gunners Slip to Emirates Loss

Arsenal edge close to the Champions League exit door after suffering a 2-0 home loss to Barcelona. Harry Kane is set to play with a protective mask this weekend after breaking his nose against Palace. Cheick Kouyate’s one-match ban is rescinded by the FA, whilst Eliaquim Mangala is available for City’s trip to Kiev.

Gunners fall to Emirates defeat

Arsenal lacked the clinical touch as they succumbed to a 2-0 loss in the home leg of their Champions League match-up against Barcelona. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain started on the right flank but suffered a knock and was replaced at the 50-minute mark by Theo Walcott. Danny Welbeck came on for Olivier Giroud on 72 minutes, whilst both Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez played from start to finish for the hosts.

The Scout Says: The Gunners’ inability to breach Barcelona’s backline reflects their downturn on the attacking front of late. Since Gameweek 22, only three teams have mustered fewer goals (four) than the north Londoners, who posted the second-worst shot-conversion rate (5.5%) behind West Bromwich Albion (4.7%). This deficiency could be brought to the fore over the next trio of Gameweeks, with Spurs and Man United – two teams that chart in the top three for goals conceded – on their agenda. With a possible blank Gameweek 30 also on their agenda (should they overcome the Baggies in an FA Cup replay) those holding the likes of Sanchez (one assist in nine) and Giroud, who has netted in one of the last nine Gameweeks, may well be looking elsewhere.

Kane set to play with protective mask

Harry Kane sustained a broken nose during Tottenham Hotspur’s defeat to Crystal Palace in the FA Cup last weekend. Although the striker will be fitted with a mask so he can play against Swansea City this weekend, there’s a chance that Mauricio Pochettino will manage his minutes against Fiorentina in midweek to avoid further complications.

The Scout Says: Approaching a Gameweek in which the likes of Sergio Aguero and Romelu Lukaku face blanks, Kane’s 41% ownership can breathe a sigh of relief in the knowledge that the league’s joint-second-top scorer won’t miss any domestic action. Although there are question marks regarding his capacity to start in the second leg of Spurs’ Europa League tie, the extra rest would be welcome from a Fantasy perspective. Having notched five goals in as many starts, Kane offers stern competition to Jamie Vardy (four in four, home clash against Norwich City) in the captaincy stakes ahead of the Swans’ visit. The 10.1-priced marksman ranked joint-top among forwards for shots on target (eight) across the past four Gameweeks and is pitted against a side that surrendered the third-most big chances (nine) during that stretch. Spurs embark on a challenging pair of fixtures (whu, ARS) beyond the Swansea encounter, but they enjoy a favourable trip to Aston Villa in a Gameweek 30 pockmarked with blanks, ensuring that Kane remains a premier pick.

Kouyate ban overturned

The red card that Cheikhou Kouyate received during West Ham’s 5-1 win over Blackburn Rovers last weekend has been rescinded by the FA. As such, the Senegalese midfielder will be available for Sunderland’s visit in Gameweek 27.

The Scout Says: Despite already equaling last year’s four-goal haul, Kouyate has been a peripheral figure on the Fantasy scene due to the form of his West Ham team-mates., In light of Manuel Lanzini’s return to action and Victor Moses’ recent form (one goal and assist in two outings), Michail Antonio becomes a serious rotation risk for the Black Cats clash, with Slaven Bilic expected to revert to a 4-2-3-1 system. Couple this with Hammers’ injury-prone stable of forwards, and Dimitri Payet sticks out as their only enticing source of attacking coverage. The France international has discovered his groove over the past week, bagging three goals and two assists in a pair of starts. It’s hardly surprising, then, that he places third among all players for “transfers in” (77,000) before a home clash against a Sunderland outfit that ranks top for away goals conceded (36). Looking past that match-up, two testing head-to-heads (TOT, eve) and a blank in Gameweek 30 discourage further investment, though.

United confirm fixture postponement

Manchester United have confirmed that their Gameweek 35 trip to West Ham has been postponed and will require a new date. This is due to the fact that both clubs go head-to-head in the quarter-finals in Gameweek 30, so therefore one of them will make the last four of the cup and with the semi-finals taking place on the weekend of Gameweek 35, their league match needs to be rescheduled

The Scout Says: Given that both sides are also without a Gameweek 30 fixture due to their FA Cup head-to-head, this means that they now will have two blanks and two doubles apiece to follow. Looking at the possibilities, Gameweeks 31, 34, 36 and 37 (i.e. weeks where there are no European matches scheduled to take place) are the likeliest scenarios, though with so many ifs and buts right now, those holding the likes of Dimitri Payet or Chris Smalling are unable to plan with too much certainty until the new dates are finally revealed.

Mangala returns for City

Manuel Pellegrini revealed that Eliaquim Mangala is back in the frame after recovering from a hamstring complaint:

“We have similar squad that we played in the last Premier League game. The only player that has recovered is Mangala.”

The Scout Says: Following Vincent Kompany’s comeback last Gameweek, Mangala will likely be consigned to bench duty for the remainder of the campaign, with Nicolas Otamendi partnering the Sky Blues’ captain in central defence. Manuel Pellegrini’s propensity for rotation at the full-back berths means that Kompany represents our favoured route into a Man City rearguard that’s struggled for consistency this term. Our immediate interest in their backline is limited by an imminent blank and subsequent trip to Liverpool, but a favourable run from Gameweek 29 (AVL, nor, MUN, bou, WBA) and the promise of a double Gameweek somewhere down the line should renew Kompany’s allure.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    GWK 27 plans

Last night on the scoutcast we discussed our GWK 27 moves. Drafting in a Leicester player looks the sensible move given their fixtures and blank avoidance.

But elsewhere moves look tricky - upgrading a fifth mid can cause benching headaches.
Meanwhile, shifting out and then drafting back in Aguero could use up precious transfers.

What are your GWK 27 moves to ensure you have a strong playing XI that also has an eye on longer term fixtures?

For me I've already got Vardy in for Lukaku and also plan to use my second transfer. The best player for my dullard ways looks to be JKing to Sigurdsson - a rare player that avoids blanks, could get something in GWK 27, is benchable in GWK 28 and then has great fixtures thereafter.

Does that basically say that Sigurdsson has a couple of tricky ties in spurs and Arsenal but should do well against Nor, bou, Avl and che?

I'm going a bit with 'gut' v spurs. He does well against them and scored in this fixture last season. He has history with them and Spurs are looking tired recently...too many games I think for them at the moment.

      Evans -> Fuchs.

Selling Kun is the most silly thing to do right now. GW30 fixture and DGW34. I'm looking to change my second keeper to Hart and double up on defence with Kompany. No midfielder appeals to me.

Want 3 city players for 29.

I'm either going for the benching headache and getting Arnie/Shaqiri for Gosling then in two weeks moving him on for Siggy. Your scoutcast has put me off Shaqiri slightly though...

      OR

I'm going to draft in a Stoke defender to avoid missing out on clean sheet points from my goalkeeper situation (Butland/Schmeichel)

What exactly was there that put you off shaqiri if I may ask? I'm in exact same dilemma. Have to replace firmino to get 11 players in. Currently confused between Arnie and Shaq. Other options are Mata, Siggy, Ayew. But most probably would do a stoke mid and currently feeling punty and leaning towards shaq. Need a good reason not to take him!

3 trades done with a view to having Vardy/Mahrez/Fuchs combo and a DGW keeper in the bank:
      - Giroud to Vardy (FT)
      - Schmeichal to Hart (FT)
      - Francis to Fuchs (-4)

Selling Kun seems perfectly logical to me - just the stigma connected with his name makes it nervy. All your replacement (Vardy? Ighalo?) has got to do is score 4 pts or more - the cost of a transfer - and you're quids in. Buy Aguero back for Villa. Simples

Arnie has AVL, NEW. You couldn't really get any better fixtures than that. Also on pens (with no Bojan or Walters) and has a sniff of other set pieces. Makes my benching headache relatively easy after the next two weeks too 🙂

I personally won't be touching Silva unless he shows any signs of a return to form, he's in the worst form of his career since his injury IMO

I have 3 Leicester, 3 Spurs,so pretty much settled for GW30(have 8 players now). have 2FT so decided to make Aguero - Vardy instead of Ighalo - Vardy + another transfer. Simply because of watford playing BOU and I wanted to gove Ighalo last chance to score. Having also kane up front means I will play 3-4-3, so next week I am doing Ighalo - Aguero and Firmino - 5th cheap mid who plays GW30

Not the most exciting for me.

      I have two free transfers.

I am definitely sold on Stanislas > Delle Alli.

Another I am weighing up is Ward > Wimmer. I get that Wimmer only has a 5 game shelf life and that I will only play him for 3 of those games, and its a transfer spent but it would cost me no points and it could reduce the risk of damage from a Tottenham cs during this 5 game period, as most of my ML rivals have Dier/Alderweireld.

I have brought in Vardy for Lukaku for my FT, like everyone else seems to have!

I've had a bit of an unlucky break with injuries, which has hampered my "no hit" policy - Zouma, Morrison and, perhaps, CBJ have all succumbed, and I've had bigger fish to fry elsewhere in gameweeks (e.g. last week I went with my gut feel, abetted by Doosra's stats, and got Eriksen in for Silva over "fixing" my defensive issues).

I can only play 10 at the moment (assuming CBJ plays) because I have Saylor and Kun with blank.

I can either replace Morrison or Zouma.

I don't like having a strong 5th mid, and I'll play my strong front 7 (Mahrez, Payet, Sanchez, Eriksen | Kane, Aguero, Vardy) on the midweek games, so, yet again, I won't be replacing Morrison

I have been torn over which defender to bring in for a hit - it seems a bit silly to do so, but with the prospect of a 0 if I don't play an XI it doesn't seem too terrible to not make a change (in effect, it's a -2). I'll probably bring in Fuchs for longevity, though I have considered Wolle and VVD.

So that'll give me a ramshackle XI of:

      Butland
      Dann Daniels CBJ Fuchs
      Mahrez Payet Sanchez Eriksen
      Kane Vardy(c)

Which should just about see me through!

I'm getting Eriksen in for Stannis. I like cheap mids, but I need to play the 5th mid in 3 of the next 4. Worth the upgrade imo.

      GW28: Bench Siggy(ars).
GW29: Bench one of Erik/Alli (ARS) or use AOA

Strong front 7 for GW27 and GW30 blanks when benching Kun(27) and Ozil(30) (assuming Arsenal beat Hull)

might have a 1 week punt on a striker, the opposite of what is probably advisable, but while the rest of the field is in a state of gw30 paralysis maybe the unadvisable could pay off

Did Firmino > Payet before Firmino even played last weekend. When I leave things too long I overthink (such as Ozil > Silva three weeks ago only to immediately undo it), and I've been lucky to avoid injuries thus far.

I upgraded my 5th mid (King) to Alli, allowing me to bench Aguero and play 3-5-2

I'm not fussed about benching points after this week, as benching Alli is no different to not owning him and having a non-playing 5th on your bench

      following jonty previous strategy:

gw27 - aguero and firmino out; vardy and mahrez in
      gw28 - hold
gw29 - giruod and ozil out; silva and aguero in
      gw30 - 11 playing

I used my free transfer on Lukaku to Vardy.

If I had one more transfer I would do Firmino to Siggy or Silva as part of long term strategy. Will have to save that for next week.

Also have to get Aguero back at some stage. I did Aguero to Costa in previous GW.

Downside is I don't have a free transfer to draft out Cresswell who has underperformed!

Does anyone remember back in the first part of the season when Arsenal had a really terrible shot conversion rate and couldn't score?

Did that end around the time that Sanchez got injured? Cos now he's back and they can't score for tofee again.

Have I stubble on an insightful point, or is it just coincidence?

Sanchez has been crap in front of goal this season.

I know he's hit the woodwork a fair amount of times, and his number of shots on target are impressive, but for a player of his quality, if he wants to be seen as a Neymar/Messi/Suarez equivalent at Arsenal, he needs more quality in his final touch. I think it's the injury, and he'll be back inevitably as he's a fantastic player, but for now he's not himself..

Yeah I think it is partially to do with him not having a full summers rest for quite a long time, he was thrown straight back in after Copa America, got injured which I wouldn't call resting its more rehabilitating and he's straight back in the fray again. I'd have actually rested him against Hull and played Campbell Ozil Ox and Welbz.. Or something like that

Rob Elliott was introduced in the Newcastle starting lineup in Gameweek 9. Krul is out for the season so there is little to no rotation risk. Definitely my pick for budget keeper at 4m and deserves to be on the watch list considering Newcastle are ranked 8th for clean sheets from now till gw38 by the season ticker. Why Fabianski and Boruc are on the list baffles me.

Since GW 9 compared to those on the watch list he is:
    - Joint best for bad touches (0, highest is Lloris 3)
    - Joint worst for clean sheets (4, highest is 8 Butland, Cech, Schmeichel)
    - Only made 1 error leading to a goal or chance (highest is 2, Boruc, Fabianski, Lloris)
    - Worst for goals conceded (31, best is 0 Forster)
    - Worst for penalties faced (4, bes is 0 Forster, Lloris)

    Bonus since GW9:
    Butland 10pts
    Cech 9pts
    Boruc 6pts
    Elliott 6pts
    Lloris 3pts
    Schmeichel 3pts
    Forster 3pts
    Courtois 3pts
    Fabianski 0pts

    Total since GW9:
    Cech 86pts
    Butland 82pts
    Schmeichel 76pts
    Lloris 70pts
    Elliott 57pts
    Boruc 56pts
    Fabianski 51pts
    Courtois 43pts
    Forster 42pts

Comparing to the best players in the watchlist shows you that he is actually not too bad. Got a decent pts haul and has bps potential, couple that with some decent Newcastle home games and he has the potential to do very well for a 4m priced keeper. Depends how far you want to stretch the old budget 😉

    My back line is:

    ______DDG/HENN
    Bellerin Sagna Walker Simspon Fonte

I have no playing keeper for GW30 so Butland in this week looked tempting. Problem with that is I would be left with only 3 playing Defs this week, one being Walker who is easily rotated seemingly.

Therefore I must go Sagna--> Wolly instead and get Hart in for GW 29 (AVL).

Spending an extra transfer to get the Stoke/city combo but seems worth it in case I end up with 10 this week.

I just mean in general..they always tend to give a good account of themselves yet lose, Wenger always comes away saying things like' naive', 'lacked technical quality'. hes the manager, if these things keep cropping up groundhog day fashion whose to blame? arsenal have hit a ceiling with Wenger. They can go any further yet persist in believing it will change next season

Come on. He is entitled to expect his players not to fail in those individual situations in the way they did last night. It really came down to a few moments, in which Arsenal's players always failed, and they're just not that bad. Even if Ox was a completely mediocre finisher, and we know he actually can shoot, he should have converted that chance at least 99% of times.

so we cant look to Wenger for Oxlades failure to develop? Ten years since walcott signed, he should be at the peak of his powers, and started on the bench last night.

Walcott has developed a lot, for sure, despite the long injury. But with players who don't develop, like Wilshere and Ox (well, I'd argue he has developed, just not as much as you'd like him to), you should put blame on their attitude too. There's only so much that the coaches can do, a lot rests on the shoulders of the players themselves. They have certainly been treated very well in the team, given time and chances.

What he says. You cannot accuse Arsenal/Arsene of not nurturing what they've got.

One or two of them need a kick up the jacksy.

Obviously, if Suarez played on his side instead, things could have been very different... but you can't blame him for not trying, he did match the release clause.

Okay, his antics on the pitch are a disgrace, but seriously, just how much more dangerous that Barcelona lineup is with Suarez than it would be with Sanchez? Swap those players around (imagine Arsenal had bought Suarez, Barcelona would probably not have sold Sanchez), and you would have so much more dangerous Arsenal attack and lack that extra something from Barcelona that makes their attack so untenable.

I agree that Sanchez seems to be the much more likeable guy, though.

I don't think yesterday was his fault. He set up a great plan which actually worked really well for most of the game and Ox should have put them ahead.

His players were naive enough to allow the first goal to happen when they could have got a yellow when the ball was still in Barca's half.

Then a poor clearance and poor challenge from Flamini.

      Completely the player's faults

sorry but he brought flamini on, hes the one whose supposed to be nurturing young talent like oxe yet he still doestnt have the calmness to finish properly in a big game, probabaly becasue hes only fiinished two 90 min games in his whole arsenal career. we would be singing wengers praises if flamini or wellbeck scored so why not the other way round? the guy gets away with murder year in , year out and is never held accountable. its his fault by the way they keep getting these tough teams in the second round as they dont have the bottle to wing the group stages

Maybe you'd be wrong to sing his praises just because Flamini scored (if he did)? And, there may be a reason that Coq was not fit to play full match so he just haad to bring Flamini on.

And they were never going to win the group anyway, even if they really did fail it with the first two matches, still, Bayern was always going to win the group. Win the PL this season, and then wish to not draw Real from the pot 2, and Arsenal's got the chances to win their group for once.

And, again, there were many easier opponents to draw from the group winners (Zenit, Wolfsburg), but they just drew the most difficult opponent there is,

i just see a litany of excuses made for this guy, injuries, players fault, bad luck , tough groups excuses we would never make for any other top manager except him. while Jose was wrong to say what he said about Wenger in the manner he did the general sentiment was right. he has the safest job in football. the professor is a fitting name for him because he clearly has tenure.

        +1

1st goal: Even without a yellow. It was so deep in Barcelona's half, and Neymar back to goal too, that they could have gotten away with conceding just a free kick. Which is what Barcelona did much of the game.

2nd: I think Mertesacker tried to control the ball, and demonstrated why he should never do that.

.....and they could have indeed very well scored a goal or two before conceding the first. It was a fine tactical performance by Wenger, and almost worked out well.

Currently mulling over a plan for the weeks until GW30- how does this look?

My Current Team with 2FT this week

    Adrian (Fabianski)
    Ivan Kosc Fuchs (Williams Targett)
    Payet Sanchez Mahrez Alli Ayew
    Vardy Ighalo (Aguero)

For this week looking to take -4 and do - Kosc>Daniels Ighalo>Kane Ayew>Alli

    Then in GW28 do Adrian>Butland

    GW29 Sanchez> Siggy

    Leaving me GW30

    Butland
    Daniels Williams Fuchs (Targett Ivan)
    Arnie Siggy Mahrez Alli (Payet)
    Kane Vardy Aguero

Opinions if you've been bothered to read this far!!

I went through my own team yesterday and I went a step further than you and planned for GW34 DGWs too.

A problem with your plan is that if Arsenal beat Hull they will have a DGW in 34 and so unless you plan to WC in GW33 you have lost two DGWers by getting shot of them

Your GW 30 team is almost identical to mine.

Except I will have 2 arsenal boys on the bench and also DDG who will also have DGW34, allowing me to get 10 DGW'ers in gw34

It's likely I'd bring Özil in for either Siggy or Arnie straight away after GW30 and I would take a few hits to put out a full double GWK team

    Gomes (BOU)
Cresswell (SUN), Dawson* (CRY), Bellerin (mun)
Mahrez (NOR), Payet (SUN), Alli (SWA), Sanchez (mun), Stanislas (wat)
    Vardy (NOR), Kane (SWA)

    Hennessey (wba), Simpson**, Moreno, Aguero

    --------

Already did Lukaku > Vardy a while back. 2.3m in the bank and 1 FT remaining. Already have 10 outfield players for GW30.

    A) Save a transfer?
    B) Use opportunity to swap Simpson to Fuchs (the better option) as my team is covered for the blanks.
    C) Currently have no keeper for GW30, so swap one of the Gomes/Hennessey combo as it has been useless lately.
    D) Sell Sanchez and go on a -4/-8 spending spree

    Thanks

THEREFORE, do not order your table by them.
