After seven Gameweeks of 2016/17 – which included five away fixtures – Liverpool are sitting pretty in the Premier League.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are just two points off the summit, having chalked up wins over Arsenal, Chelsea and Leicester, in addition to a draw on the road at Tottenham.

A Gameweek 2 loss at Burnley – where they produced 26 attempts on goal to their hosts’ three in a 2-0 defeat – has been the one temporary blip for the red half of Merseyside.

It’s fair to say that the Reds’ midfield has been fundamental to their displays – all but one of their 18 goals have arrived from the centre of the park.

From a Fantasy Premier League perspective, though, pinpointing the optimum Liverpool player in any given Gameweek has proven a near-impossible task.

Five of Klopp’s players – James Milner, Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino, Adam Lallana and Sadio Mane – have scored at least three times.

As a result, that quintet are all placed in the top 11 midfielders in FPL, with Milner – despite his stint at left-back – benefitting from spot-kick duties four times already.

With time to pause and assess during the international break, we delve into both the team and player data as Liverpool prepare for a schedule that looks ripe for significant investment.

Following Jonty's post on midfield BPS monsters, here are the top 20 defenders. Bear in mind it may be skewed by injuries, suspensions etc. Maybe it'll help pick out who will collect most BP if there are happen to be any CS:

    1. Blind 178
    2. Koscielny 172
    3. Walker 165
    4. Fuchs 161
    5. Bailly 159
    6. Vertonghen 157
    =7. Monreal 156
    =7. A Smith 156
    9. C Davies 149
    10. Alderweireld 148
    11. van Dijk 147
    12. Jagielka 145
    13. Bellerin 143
    =14. Azpilicueta 138
    =14. Valencia
    16. Gibson 136
    =17. Keane 134
    =17. Barragan 134
    19. Morgan 133
    20. Cedric 131

Few notable factoids in there an amongst the rest of the numbers. Koscielny and Monreal better Bellerin. No City/Liverpool. Boro play quite well even if they don't CS much (just unlucky so far?). Blind is a monster. Williams not monster status yet for Everton.

    Hope that is of use/interest

a more helpful indicator would be baseline bps. the goals/assists etc skew the baps potential of many defenders

Fair enough. I see BPS as a general quality of play indicator, including defense and attack. Just think of those as the defenders who have played the most and, generally speaking, best.

I'm fumbling for worthwhile transfers to make on this team (2FT, 0 itb)

    Foster Pickford
    Walker Williams A.Smith Holebas Amat
    Sanchez Sterling Firmino Antonio Capoue
    Aguero Lukaku Deeney

    Antonio, Williams > Snodgrass, Kos/Bellerin?

I think it is a very nice side.

I might have Lukaku as one of the 2 non Aguero forwards but you cannot really argue with the fixtures of the 2 you have gone for.

Very good article, and main reason I've joined up this website; to glean various insights into the interpretations of the stats.

One point I'd like to make on the stats; people need to differentiate between what statistical signals are feasibly possible to 'revert to mean' short term, medium term and long term.

Zlatan's touches & attempts in the box for example; it's a pretty safe bet that this translates to imminent returns. I'd be very surprised if he plays next three games and doesn't get at least two.

On the opposite side ( and it's not a directly opposite translation of course) , Capoue's seemingly ridiculous goal / shot ratio.... there's no reason that this is going to go into imminent reversal. Someone else touched on this in the comments, whereby Yaya & Ramsey had a season long extension of v high percentage conversion ratio... what also has to be considered of course is the shot quality, and arrival position into box etc.. Anyway it could be 100 games + before you see a stat such as Capoue's shot conversion 'revert to the mean'...

I think that's what this website does. The underlying stats are there, from there its judgement whether you consider them ST/LT/mean reverting surely?

If West Ham don't get a couple of wins in next four games (cpl, SUN, eve, STK), the following four (tot, mun, ARS, liv) will surely see the end of Billic before Xmas. I know they were handy on the road last year, but they seem to be appalling defensively now.

They should have improved the defence in the summer with a big signing. Unlucky with the injury to Cresswell. And then everyone knows they tried to get a number 9 but maybe set their sights too high and ended up missing out. Of course, Ayew injury another slice of bad luck

I am really stumped here. I badly want to get Redmond out for a better midfielder, but with Kun, Lukaku and Costa along with Mane and Sanchez there really isnt much I can do is there?

I like Mane but would swap him to Firmino if need be.

Also, not sure what to do with Shaw, I keep expecting him to be return but he never does.

    I have 0.5ITB

    Foster - Jaku

    Shaw - McAuley - Stones - Amat - Souare

    Sanchez - Mane - Redmond - Snodgrass - Capoue

    Aguero - Costa - Lukaku

I was thinking of Shaw to Holebas, the latter being on free kicks and getting forward often. That would give me 7.4M, I could then change Mane to Firmino and bring in Walcott.

Yep. This is the thing with Chadli's fixtures though he is increasingly looking like the single go-to source of points in his team. But I only got him for a 2-week punt so maybe I should stick to the original plan.

Antonio is a tough one with his form and fixtures being great. It's just with WHU's defensive woes that concern me that Bilic may tinker him

I'm sticking with him. Like you say, I can't see any decent replacements for him. He has the stats while there is great value in midfield. I don't see a rush to get rid of him.

I was, until I took a deeper look at his potential replacements. I decided I could keep him for a little longer as it wouldn't affect my opportunity costs too much, despite a shaky defence.

I would do Antonio to Son. I fear Ramsey will limit Walcott's minutes when he returns, so he may not be a good option long term

Stats are great but it's missing the fact that Firmino's goal threat gets a boost when Sturridge is on the pitch, and Coutinho's take a dive if he has to drop into Lallana's deeper lying midfield position.

If Lallana recovers from his groin strain and Liverpool line up with Firmino as the false 9 with Coutinho and Mane off of him, Coutinho's the one you want (over Firmino, not necessarily Mane).

        Interesting table.
To me, Firmino beats Coutinho over long term hands down.
Mane could match Firmino but Coutinho is safely the 3rd of these 3

Any one of them could score but Firm as a False 9, I love. I agree with you though and sticking with Firm. Was just disproving the first comment of the poster tbh.

Firmino is much more effective when Sturridge is on the pitch as Lvierpool are one of those teams where the centre forward role is there to allow space for midfielders to run forward

Firmino as a false nine is poor. When he's moved to the left he's excellent.

So let's look at this key games -

Liv v Lei - First goal came while Sturridge was on the pitch as a CF. Second goal came after Sturridge had been subbed - but as it towards the end Firmino remained more to the left. It was Mane and Lallana who took turns to bomb forward into that central attacking role.

Swa v Liv - Firmino started as a false 9 but when Lallana went off he was moved to the left - points haul ensues.

The other games where Firmino was a false 9 he did hardly anything Fantasy wise - it was Coutinho, Lallan and Mane that prospered.

But where are those stats from? This season? Or last season? Or overall? Also is he counting games where Firmino played as a false 9 from the start. So for example is he counting Swansea as Firmino false 9 because he started there.

I looked into it via heat maps and stats this season. Not really sure what those stats Parm has posted relate to or what his source is - may be good for him to let us know.

Looks like those stats are based on all games under Klopp so that includes last season with a different set up so not sure I'd count those.

Also they are based on matches rather than actualy minutes in each role - so it does appear they will base that on where he starts - so that would count Swa as a F9 role, when it wasn't.

Most games where Sturridge comes on Firmino's role will change. Definitely taking those stats you posted with a pince of salt.

They're including last season. Nearly all of Firmino's points last season came from when he was playing up top. His best position, and a similar role to what he's played for a few seasons now, including at Hoffenheim when he played in a floating forward line.

Where is your conclusion that Firmino is "poor as a false 9" coming from? Surely you're not largely basing that off the fact that he blanked in that one match when Pool put 5 past 'Ull....

Basing it on this season so far.

Every time he plays on the left there have been points. When he plays as a false 9 he's only managed one assist.

It is possible the dynamic is different this season with Lallana getting forward now and with Mane in the team.

It is also possible that with just eight games in and with him missing one that its a small sample size. But I do know that it is dangerous to compare how one player performed in a certain role with one team or a team with different personnel with another.

Be good to revisit after a few more games. But currently this season the evidence suggests that the CF/F9 role at Liverpool is not a great one for Fantasy points.

But that's not to say Firmino is a poor pick as in any given game as a false 9 Sturridge can come on or as we saw v Swansea an injury can occur elsewhere. Basicaly though Fantasy managers' that own him should rejoice when they see the team sheet with Sturridge starting.

Sorry, work took me away from continuing the discussion on this, but it looks like Jonty has made the points I was going to make, excellently.

I do recall Firmino doing well as the false 9 last year. But this is a new season, and I certainly think Liverpool are setup slightly differently tactically. It's similar to what Koeman tries to achieve with Southampton and Everton; a forward that drops deep with 2 wide players cutting in and running beyond (Mane and Coutinho). Hence the Milner and Clyne overlaps and attacking engagement. I'm not sure that was quite the case tactically last year.

        No worries. 🙂

I think he attempted it last season but with Moreno it failed to work. Also this season he has Mane - a player very much suited to making that work.

Yes, Liverpool certainly have an out ball now which will cause defences to sit deeper and create more space for the likes of Coutinho and Lallana.

I took the 'risk' of captaining Coutinho last week and as soon as Sturridge was brought on for Lallana's injury, I said "oh no" because I knew Firmino would shift to playing in Coutinho's role with Coutinho filling in for Lallana. There were still 60 mins to play but I knew that meant a 2 pt captain.

I think we need a larger sample size, for sure, but we need to be mindful of these tactical tweaks during games when reaching conclusions. If Lallana is out for any length of time, then Coutinho > Firmino will be on the cards. Maybe Can will be given the chance vs United.

    2 free transfers to use.

Saving one and using the other to do Capoue --> Hojberg.

Makes me 0.4 I can use on a double transfer next week.

There are some issues, I have Chadli and Ibra I am not thrilled about, but I am sticking with the Swede and at Chadli's price bracket there aren't many suitable replacements. His last home game he scored 2 and assisted 2 so I suppose I'll just hope he does something.

Spurs is probably the hardest team to break down defensively which is a worry as a Chadli owner. But he is undervalued imo with pens and the chief attacking player in his team. I may grudgingly hold on.
