The Community Round-Up

Revolution is in the air this week as many in the community are looking to overthrow the Fantasy Premier League’s (FPL) emerging template.

Our Hot Topic posters are full of advice on how to rise up the rankings by being different.

Meanwhile, investing in Leicester City assets looks to be a key way to break the mould according to our community scribes, who also use the animal kingdom to poke fun at some of this month’s January transfer moves.

Elsewhere, taking a punt on Stoke City escaping relegation is among the riskier template-smashing strategies looked at in our latest Members’ tables.

We look back on all of that and finish off with a catch-up with the leaders in our community competitions, the managers currently turning to the template to help them soar away from their rivals.

The Community Articles

Ahead of a strong run of matches for Leicester – starting with Watford’s visit to the King Power Stadium this weekend – FPL Virgin has been delving into the statistics of their chief creator, Riyad Mahrez, for his Members’ community article.

Meanwhile, the ‘crowd’, being tracked by Hutch_James, also backs a strong performance from the Foxes this Gameweek.

Elsewhere, Applebonkers has been taking a tongue in cheek look at some of the more unusual players Premier League managers ought to be considering before the January transfer window slams shut.

Finally, be sure to look out for Top Marx’s latest Hall of Fame analysis on Saturday morning.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

The cold weeks of January have brought a sense of malaise among some in the community about their involvement in Fantasy football, with Jordan asking for help to tackle a bout of FPL fatigue that has recently affected him.

Wild Rover is also fed up, disgruntled in particular that too many managers are opting for the same small pool of players. His template-busting discussion attracted a raft of ideas from the community on how to stay ahead of the herd, and was also the main topic on this week’s Scoutcast.

Targeting Leicester looks to be a good way to break the template in light of their strong set of fixtures.

We also recommend tapping into the prospects at another side with a favourable schedule, Everton, with Jordan Pickford a key option for Ludo. Theo Walcott, who Everton signed from Arsenal this week, could be another template-breaking Toffee, according to JonBones’ hot topic on the winger’s move.

Another way to steal a march on mini-league leaders is to borrow some successful strategies from poker players, said Zeslinguer.

For Limited and mediocre manager, one of the best ways to climb the rankings is to stick with the template and sit back while others take disastrous risks on differentials.

According to our “rough with the smooth” round-up of your Gameweek 23 scores, such maverick moves can indeed be full of danger. Just ask those who handed the armband to Manchester United’s misfiring midfielder Jesse Lingard as he toiled against lowly Stoke City on Monday.

But for those still keen to take a punt on a low-owned player, there are a raft of suggestions in our Hot Topic on Gameweek 24’s best differentials, with Ibe Wisdom adding to the discussion with a specific need to find a new ‘magic bean’ cheap midfielder, after it emerged popular choice Ruben Loftus-Cheek could now be sidelined for months.

Harry Kane looks to be the template’s top captaincy choice this weekend as he travels to a Southampton side that he scored a hat-trick against in Gameweek 23. But Kings of Lyon wonders whether Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero may be a better option.

There was further chat on City’s assets in our discussion on how they compare with the array of attacking talent among Liverpool’s ranks.

Among the template’s prize assets is Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso, who has goals, assists, bonus points and clean sheets in his locker. He looks to be the only Blues player worth considering, according to our Hot Topic on Antonio Conte’s troops.

Eden Hazard is particularly unpopular among the community, after mustering a single goal in his last seven league starts. Rbrd is among those unhappy with their investment in the Belgian, but admitted he still cannot quite bring himself to show him the door due to his kind fixture run, including this weekend’s trip to Brighton.

To view all our discussions please visit our Hot Topics page.

The Members Tables

Stoke present the ultimate form versus fixture conundrum. They prepare to host Huddersfield at home on the back of a woeful run of form that saw their manager Mark Hughes sacked. For those considering their options under the management of new boss Paul Lambert, I’ve created this table looking at their key assets.

Knight Rider has been taking a peak at the key statistics of Leicester defenders, ahead of their strong fixture schedule, while FPL Virgin has been focused on the best Bournemouth options.

Meanwhile, attacking midfielders come under scrutiny in chief_marc’s latest table.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

Handing the Gameweek 23 armband to Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard proved costly for long time FFScout Moderators and Contributors league leader Az, who has now relinquished top spot to Jack Wain, the latter scoring 99 after captaining Harry Kane.

There’s also a change at the summit of both Red Lightning’s Top 10K Any Season league and PDM’s Top 1k Any Season contest, with Anders Lium taking first place in each.

The form manager among the community is Mei You Shagua, who leads Red Lightning’s January to May league.

Elsewhere, Heroes and Villains retains bragging rights at the top of the FFScout Members league, while Bowstring the Carp is the new leader of the main Fantasy Football Scout league. He is also up to 14th overall and is now the top-ranked manager in Ireland.

In TorresMagic’s Last Man Standing competition, TheTinman hit the top score in Gameweek 23, with 116. There are 791 teams left after 100 were eliminated when the safety score was set at 62.

Hutch_James dropped by to alert Rugby fans among the community that Six Nations Fantasy football is about to get underway, while Speedyboyz was on hand to supply the latest news from the Community Watch tournament.

If you are running a community tournament and would like the latest scores included in future Community Round-Ups, please email us summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spreadsheet or head-to-head competition, at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

    Kun expected to play, right?
He's my captain and I'm a bit worried because he isn't in the scout squad. Should I switch to Sterling?

There isn't. Aguero is a top cap choice this week, they base the team with a budget so can't pick everyone.

If you went with the scout team as your own team every week you're rank wouldn't be great.

Look on the team news tab for predicted starting line ups. They can only have 3 from a team and have a budget but I personally still don't understand why they didn't get him

Scout has Chilwell ahead of Fuchs. Am I missing something?

I know Chilwell has been playing recently but is he still preferred at LB even with being sent off in last game?

Why would you sell Lingard when he scored a brace against Burnley recently and KDB has fixtures but he's not good value. Son has outscored him by 23pts last 9 games

I would sell lingard for sane because i expect sane to outscore lingard over the next two weeks when sane plays newcastle and west brom at home and ligard plays burnley and spurs away.

im just wondering if sane or aguero is a better pick this week

He battered them before. City a good bet too but who scores the goals? So many different players do. Salah a good bet but is coming off sickness. Kane simply the most logical option.

Really want Aguero but the logical side of me says that Newcastle and West Brom at home look like amazing fixtures but both teams will park the bus.

Do we think an angry Pep who's just lost his unbeaten streak will be able to break these defences down?

Really? I was in early but got shot of him this week. I was always a doubter because of the injuries, but he’s now he’s just looked like he’s lost a lot of his mojo. Happy to be rid, despite the fixtures.

Maybe I'm just desperate for a differential.

I think I'll do what I should have done a few days ago and do Morata to Firmino. Dont have to use a hit either which is a bonus over getting aguero

If you can afford both then going Firminio will leave a lot for other upgrades.
Kun does not look like tithe player of old bit of course the fixtures are tempting.

              Chilwel Walcott Lingard
              Or
              Maguire Son Carroll

              Carrol or Chilwell usually benched.
B seems better but Spurs fixture real bad after this week.

How about A with up to 7.5 over Walcott?
Any suggestions could go Arnie I suppose.
And that would leave .5 ITB over nothing ITB with B.

Every year, around this time, we lament the ‘template team’. But a ‘template’ at this point is almost an inevitability. We now have a reliable mass of data & that data dictates a particular team or ‘template’. It creates a convergence. It’s just logic.

Yet, around this time, some managers will feel the need (or be encouraged) to ‘break the template’ in order to achieve success.

But there’s a reason we talk about the template at the same time every year. It’s because it’s a brief & temporary phenomenon.

The randomness & points potential in an FPL season is heavily back-weighted and the ‘template’ will be naturally broken before we know it.

Look at what happens in the second half of the season: The January Transfer Window, CL, FA Cup, EL, CC fixture congestion/postponements = Blanks & DGWs. More injuries, fatigue, Golden Boot/Glove goals etc.., Triple Captains, Bench Boosts, Free Hits etc… There’s no feasible way you can ‘template’ the business-end of the season.

Bottom line; don’t let anyone convince you that a ‘template’ team right now is a bad thing.

A 'template' team might actually be a foundation. Use your transfers to gain an advantage, not just to be different.

True. Andy made a great point on this on the scoutcast, if you have all 11 most popular in top 10k you still gain on the top 10k in theory if they all perform as ownership level of these vary in the til 10k but with the exact template you have them all. This make sense?

I’m in the top 10k and have 5/11 of those. I wish I had more - would have a far higher rank with the likes of Alonso and son on board over the last month.

But as Dufflinks says - the template changes. Son and Lingard will dip out soon and can see at least one lei ssset joining it.

Top 10k as well and have 7/11. Son is the one that I should have got for the double but now thinking of waiting.

There are good options outside of the template, but you can't blame people for picking high scoring players on form (especially as all the above are from the "big" teams)

Plus, it was way worse when the 2nd WC was initially introduced a few years ago as it HAD to be played in January. That was proper template boredom.

There's an 8-9m slot in the template that Mahrez seems to appear in fairly often. Eriksen, Son, Sane the popular ones.

Good points, but it's a game and you don't need to be a sheep either. I enjoy it and the banter on here but like to do my own thinking most of the time. Going template is fine if it happens naturally but many on here never think for themselves it seems!

How many of your starting 11 actually constitutes a 'template' team?

I have Alonso, Otamendi, Jones, Salah, Sterling, Arnuatovic, Son and Kane, who i would constitute as being a part of the 'template' inside the top 10k.

I also own Hennessey, Mahrez and Wilson who i wouldn't constitute as 'template' and more of a 'punt'.

Everyone will have the core 'template' but surely there will be players in your squad that will add or subtract from the weekly average.

I call bullshit on such a thing as a 'template' team.

I lol'd. Picking a template team is not ideal unless you are already leading your ML or pretty close to achieve your goals in terms of OR. Those who are in front of you in OR or ML will must likely have what you call a template team hence their rank and the definition of a template team. If you want to get ahead of them you need some differentials. The more your behind you are the more you have to think outside the box in order to try to beat them. If your only a stone throw away, you can settle for less differentials. If your miles behind, you need to ave more differentials. If you dont you will most likely just stay mediocre or improve insignificantly. Id rather take a risk and increase my OR significantly, than setting up a 100p template team that everyone can agree on and staywill mediocre.

Another point is, three weeks ago Lingard was essential and template. Now people are transfering him out or, hesitating bringing him in. Three weeks ago Pickford wasnt considered a good pick, now he is. Things change!

My point is, there is no one way aproach towards template teams. It all depends on what your currebt rank is, and what your final goal is (both OR and ML).

All that matters is if you were proactive and got the "template" players before they were template or reactive and chasing them points. If the former you'll be doing well, the latter you'll have a great looking team and a shit rank.
Of course there's always also the massive luck factor

                    Surely this...

If your team slowly evolves to the template (without hits) then you must be doing well?

I'm in the top 1K and I have 9/11 players from that list. Most of them I had before they formed a template team and that helped me to climb the ranks in the past few weeks. Now it will be little more difficult, but very soon I will be looking for Mahrez and 1 new defender to try to push up in OR. My predctions are that this template team will start breaking from this GW, first TOT players, and maybe Lingard if he blanks again.

                Morning all,

Would you shift Courtois given the rumored injury? Other keeper is Elliot so if Courtois does miss out I’d be keeperless...5.4m available...

                A) Yes -> Pickford
                B) No

                Courtois
                Alonso, Masuaku, Ogbonna
                Salah, Sterling, Son, Lingard
                Kane, Aguero, Wilson

                Elliot, Dunk, Francis, RLC

I have a sneaky feeling that managers will regret not captaining a City asset this game-week!
They are at home, will have the bit back between their teeth after their defeat, playing Newcastle who are arguably a worse side that Soton! Liverpool away to SWA is no gimme either!

That's absurd. Soton kept the score to 1-1 until injury time as it is and when Lascelles plays Newcastle haven't conceded more than 2. There has to be something behind that

Liverpool away to Swansea is no gimme either - Swansea are in the relegation zone. If any away game could be a gimme, it would be that.

Kane(C) easy choice for you so! I think he's a far better choice than Salah this week. I would captain him only for the fact that I've brought in KDB to captain him for his two plum home games! GL for the gameweek!!
