Everton finally ended their summer-long chase of Steven Pienaar yesterday by snapping up the South African from Spurs on a four-year contract. The 30-year old returns to Goodison Park for a fee of £4.5m and represents a significant coup for David Moyes, after the midfielder’s dazzling performances on loan at the Merseyside club in the second half of last season:

Despite alleged interest from the likes of Sunderland and QPR, Pienaar revealed his heart was set on a move back to the Toffees after failing to establish himself at White Hart Lane. Speaking to the club’s official website upon completion of the move, he admitted:

I am happy to be here. It took a few weeks to sort out but I am delighted to be back and excited to play for Everton. There was no doubt in my mind that I would be back here. At the end of the season I told the manager how I felt and I am happy now it is all done.

The Statistics

Pienaar’s career began as a 17-year old in his native country with Ajax Cape Town. Over the course of a couple of seasons, he scored six times in 24 appearances before he made his way to Europe to sign for Ajax Amsterdam in the 2001/02 campaign. Although he spent five years at the Dutch giants, winning a couple of league titles along the way, Pienaar only managed more than 20+ league appearances in a couple of seasons and, after returning 15 goals and 20 assists in 94 matches, moved on to Borussia Dortmund.

The South African stayed in the Bundesliga for just one disappointing season, managing a single assist from 25 games before joining Everton on loan for the 2007-08 campaign. David Moyes made the deal a permanent one the following year and Pienaar soon became a key member of the Toffees first-team, with his left flank understanding with Leighton Baines proving crucial to his side’s attacking forays. In total, his first stint at Goodison lasted three-and-a-half years, with the midfielder returning 11 goals and 18 assists in 104 appearances before he signed for Spurs midway through the 2010/11 campaign.

At White Hart Lane, however, his career came to a complete standstill. The emergence of Gareth Bale as a Premier League force of nature meant Pienaar made just 10 appearances over his two half-seasons under Harry Redknapp, with only a couple of assists to show for his time in London. The 2011/12 campaign produced two brief sub appearances before Moyes came to the midfielder’s rescue once again and, back on Merseyside, Pienaar’s contribution was significant – four goals and seven assists in just 14 league appearances summed up his potential and will no doubt help him pick up plenty Fantasy investment in the season ahead.

The Prospects

In terms of game time, there is no doubt Pienaar will be a nailed-on first-team starter down the Everton left. During his time on loan last season, he started every one of the 14 league matches he was available for – the only game he missed was against parent club Spurs, just to the conditions of his temporary arrangement. Moyes is notoriously frugal when it comes to player acquisitions, so it’s safe to say the Toffees boss won’t be spending close to £5m for a bench-warmer.

Analysing the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) stats, Pienaar – despite half a dozen bookings –returned 5.7 points per game in 2011/12 at Everton. Aside from those aforementioned four goals and seven assists, his tally was also boosted by six clean sheet points and 12 bonus points, with his style of play clearly suited to the EA SPORTS Player Performance Index scoring system. At 6.5 in FPL, his mid-price potential is considerable, though Everton’s customary slow start to the season may deter suitors. Pienaar also excelled in the Sky Sports game last term – he was one of only five midfielders to be awarded five or more Man of the Match awards, despite just 14 starts – priced at 6.0, he looks a very strong punt here, too, bearing in mind we only have 30 trades over the season.

While many may feel the Toffees’ first six fixtures are far from enticing, Moyes’ side showed towards the end of last season they are more than a match for any side in the top-flight. With Pienaar wreaking havoc on the flank and Nikica Jelavic racking up the goals with consummate ease, they ended the campaign on a nine-match unbeaten run, putting four past United and notching three times against Newcastle – Moyes’ men welcome both sides to Goodison in Gameweeks 1 and 4 respectively and will be far from intimidated. With a home clash against Southampton and trips to (avl, wba, swa) also on their opening agenda, the Toffees clearly have the potential to pick up the points if they can hit the ground running; while their start to recent seasons suggests that’s easier said than done, ignoring their assets entirely may well be a costly oversight.

I'm not taking a chance on Torres -- going with Rooney straight away and hoping Hazard and Cole generate a decent amount of points. Good team, though.

Am I mad considering Szczesny as a keeper option?? he has been mentioned no where in the keepers articles but at 5.5 for a nailed on Arsenal keeper O think its a viable call.

I will no doubt get all the Fantasy rookies pointing towards one season wonders Krul & Vorm but the fact is even with a poor Arsenal season they still conceeded 2 less league goals that both Newcastle & Swansea.

No I agree - I think it's a good shout. Keeps a good amount of clean sheets at home and picked up quite a few bonus points last season which was very rare for a GK.

Arsenal get a bad rep for because when there are defensive errors they are comically bad! It does mean that you can pick up Arsenal defensive assets at a good price, not sure of the opening fixtures though....

Agree - 2 out of the first 4 decent, 3 out of the first 6 tough though - make stats do the talking!

When Sagna is back, he seems to be a better way into the Arsenal defence ... perhaps Koscielny at 5.5m too but I do think Sczez is good value. Would be surprised if I don't have him at some point this season.

I think so too but am surprised by the lack of attention to him. Also factor in a fit Vermalen to the defence and Arsenal will be much tighter that in previous seasons. Even Koscielny looks to be settling a bit so they could be a more solid unit.

Good point. Personally I won't because at some point in the season I know I'll want 3 outfield from them (Verm, RVP, Walcott did me very well for a patch last season) and I don't want to move a keeper to facilitate that. But I agree, he's priced quite kindly.

It has a huge effect clearly - but I still think *at some point* I'll want 3, regardless of whether he stays or not. They do have a history of reinventing themselves when big players go; i.e. Henry, Fabregas... If Cazorla, Podolski, Giroud - could all be good value FPL. Chamberlain, Arteta, Santos..

I've decided to go for Tevez over Aguero... IT has been tough but I am liking the decision... Tevez is good no matter if he starts or from the bench, I see him getting some points...

I don't know if Torres is back to his best but a quick rerun of the Euro 2012 highlights on TV today had me convinced. He looked like the Torres of old at Liverpool. Hungry to plant the ball in the net.

My only real gamble this season is Hazard. He could very well turn out explosive but if he doesn't I would turn to Mata.

I decided against double chelsea defence as I was put off by the recent lack of cleanies from them. I've got cashley in my team ATM which I may swap out for jones come later GWs.

    My team now:
    Friedel---Fred
    Fabio--Clyne--Bardsley--Cashley--Lescott
    Nzog--Hazard--Bale--Yaya--Noble
    Tevez--Torres--Petric

    Worries:
    (1) No United/Arsenal/Pool cover
    (2) Newcastle's Ba and Cisse (interestingly if torres does falter I may switch to Cisse)
    (3) Pienaar - I am so tempted to go for him from the go but Everton are known for being slow starters (cough 6-0 beating by Arsenal cough) BUT (a huge but) they do perform quite well against United. With that said I actually went with Nzog...
    (4) Yaya over Silva (Silva was my fav player over the last year but at 10m he feels really overpriced given the likes of Bale and the talent on chelsea's mid to go around.

Nice team. Lack of MU coverage - would prefer to see Valencia / Kagawa instead of Yaya (depends on £ of course). I assume from your comments that you're not reserving £2 for the Torres to Rooney move - I am also considering that, freeing up cash to upgrade elsewhere.

I think to assume that Rooney would outperform Torres is a longshot although I do think Rooney is a better FPL asset than Torres (at least on paper anyways) but there are always other cheaper targets to count on (Ba and Cisse as I have mentioned or even Darren Bent if one lacks the $ to bring in Rooney).

I don't know about fall apart as the same players are still there but I'd be amazed if they keep anywhere near as many clean sheets.

I think Laudrup has a reputation for very attacking football although I don't have any stats to verify this!

Yeah they've got some decent fixtures, inc 5 home games. Over the course of the season I think they'll struggle a little bit personally though. Would rather have a Spurs / Newcastle / Fulham defender for the price though, although I'd imagine I'm in an overwhelming minority here.

Yeah, just saying that for the money I would rather have a Spurs defender over the first 8 GWs.

Think it's a bit bold to plan an early WC to be honest.

Another day, another tweak. I realised that with 3 Chelsea players in my side I am already setting myself up for 3 potential transfers that I will want to do early on, and that's too much, so got rid of Hazard (who may not play both DGW games anyway)...

    =
    Hazard, Bale, Kagawa, Noble (Obertan)
    =
    Aguero, Torres, Graham

2 mil. in bank ofc for the obvious move gw2. Please dont comment me on Obertan 🙂 since hes the 4.5 mid that iam never going to play maybe but for that $ hes the best offer imho. Cant make decisions now for gw3, but planning on swapping Cole to Rafael or Lescott. Iam pretty satisfied with my GK combo evethou Cerny is bench wormer... This tactic showed kinda good since i finished in the top 100 last year.

This may be true about Nolan, but... he's nailed on, takes pens and is on set pieces. WHU fixtures are pretty decent to start with too. I'd prefer to take all that instead of a punt, while I wait and see what happens with the others in his price bracket.

Yes i so am! I dont want to put him in, but that double gw is just so easy i think.

Noble is the best of the 5.0 mids but that is because that price category is so awful but you have 3 big hitters in midfield rather than 2 big and 2 medium priced so it depends on strategy. When you want to make changes it becomes difficult unless you have money in the bank

Slowly settling down, until the charity shield messes things up

    De Gea - Green

    Ivanovic - Williams - Cuellar - B. Jones - Gorkss

    Bale - McClean - Dyer - Maloney - Noble

    Rooney - Aguero - Torres

Only issue remaining is whether to get one more big hitting mid and DG a striker, but I'd rather have Torres & Dyer to, say, Mata & Graham (to begin with anyway), likewise Rooney and Dyer over Kagawa/Tony V and Bent/Jelavic.

Yeah not really sure on Bent. I'd have money for Kagawa/Tevez which is the most tempting one tbh, don't mind doubling up with Kun.

And I'll keep Torres GW2...he's got a home game he'll play, planning on outing him then is stupid IMO. In GW3 I'll have two transfers and do whatever seems best.

do people think this is a good idea:

If your team don't have a big hitter, that you are pretty sure he will do well, and ur rivals have him. You place a tenner on him for scoring/brace/hat-trick/assist, so either way you win.
If he scores, you win money, If he don't, you win FPL wise.

I think that's a bit dangering and could lead to bit of an addiction so I'm in the "bad idea" camp!

if you can't decide just pick De Gea, with whoever you like best of the 4.5s as backup.

And yes, i'm pondering Tevez from the off, but so long as I have Silva to cover.

as i said,i dont fanc him to do as good once when Balotelli hit the form

i just wanna have City striker for 3 oppening fixures and then get jelavic and Nasri/Silva in as City coverage

AVB is a great manager and will last longer than RDM and he will guide Spurs above Arsenal into 4th. Buggu it Daniel.

    Valencia or Kagawa?

    Money no object.

Currently have Bale and Hazard as big mids, but thinking of leaving Bale out for GW1 and doing Hazard--->Bale/Siggy/VDV for GW2 depending on how spurs line up in GW1. I was going to do Hazard->Utd mid GW2 but changed mind.

After the Euros ended it's been a gravelike silence in the "false 9 camp". But surely there must be someone about. A certain No. 9 wearing Gaz B perhaps?
