Is it a good idea to make your transfers whilst fighting off a hangover? Probably not, but needs must.
I’m not sure my head is clear enough to maintain a straight line, but by all means follow me while I take a wander for a belated first pre-match preamble of the season…
My morning has so far been spent pondering the merits of bringing Tim Cahill into my Fantasy Premier League lineup. The logic seems fine. He is due to catch fire and this week’s home game with Stoke looks a potential starting point.
My main concern with Cahill however is the international break. He has been named in the Australian squad for their next two matches – a friendly against Holland and a crucial Asian Cup qualifier in Australia against Oman. This fixture falls on Wednesday October 14th – giving Cahill just a couple of days to return to England for Everton’s home game with Wolves. The thought of Cahill missing this potential point earning fixture really worries me. We know that David Moyes has plenty of options; Fellaini is a ready-made replacement for Cahill in the attacking midfield role and he could even switch formation to a 4-4-2 and introduce a Yakubu/Saha partnership.
It’s all ifs and buts but there’s significant doubt in my mind that Cahill will be in the Everton side at home to Wolves in gameweek 9. That’s been enough for me to rethink my transfer strategy this week and consider loading up further on Arsenal’s attacking talent (I already go into the gameweek with Van Persie and Bendtner in my lineup).
A move for Arshavin or Fabregas is open to me, although that would mean turning my back on biringing in Song to my defence – my other planned transfer. Is that a bad thing however. Arsenal have very strong fixtures but can their defence be trusted. The attacking potential of Song, Vermaelen and Gallas is probably needed to offer some insurance but can Song really be relied on to chip in with some attacking points?
Instead, I’m now looking towards Wigan’s Paul Scharner, who should start in the attacking midfield role against Hull this weekend. Scharner looks an attractive option and would give me the cash to swap in one of the big two Arsenal midfielders for the unproductive Ashley Young in midfield. I feel pretty secure in this move – Young faces City, Chelsea and Everton over the next four gameweeks – it’s hard to see him returning too much from those fixtures.
I’m still pondering to be honest. Scharner’s hardly secure in the Wigan lineup and three of their next four fixtures are away from home. There’s a lot to process. In fact, I’m not 100% certain that the Friday night alcohol has cleared enough to allow me to make a sound judgement right now. It has allowed me to share my Saturday morning thoughts however. Feel free to follow suit and open up on your gameweek 8 dilemmas.
