Arsenal miss chances aplenty but still enjoy their day to the seaside, putting three past Blackpool to move seven points off the top with a game in hand. Near the bottom, Aston Villa record a crucial victory in a weekend that saw Gerard Houllier’s side become the only club in the lower half of the table to pick up all three points….Here’s the notes from yesterday afternoon.

Gunners Keep Up the Chase
With the concise passing of Cesc Fabregas cutting apart Blackpool’s flimsy offside trap time and again, Arsenal were granted numerous opportunities to find the net in their visit to Bloomfield Road and it’s indicative of their recent wastefulness that Richard Kingson was beaten on just three occasions. Samir Nasri and Robin Van Persie, in particular, should have put the game beyond their hosts in a manner far more emphatic than the 3-1 scoreline suggests. Van Persie, nevertheless, did notch a goal, an assist and was subsequently awarded the 3 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Bonus Points.

The win takes Arsenal’s unbeaten league run to fourteen games and adds extra impetus to their upcoming double gameweek (LIV & tot), where investment in their players will undoubtedly be high, despite a tricky pair of games.

Jens Between the Sticks
A pre-match knee injury to Manuel Almunia gave Jens Lehmann the chance to make a return to the Arsenal first team and the German came up with one or two crucial saves to maintain the Gunners lead at times. After the game, Arsene Wenger admitted he is unsure whether Almunia will be ready for next Sunday Emirates showdown with Liverpool. Wojciech Szczesny was also described as being “not far away” from his return.

Theo Theory
Wenger clearly has a selection headache with Nasri, Andrey Arshavin and Theo Walcott all vying for roles on the flank in Arsenal’s midfield. Nasri looks his preferred option with Arshavin and Walcott seemingly set to rotate. It was the latter on the bench at Blackpool but he saw action on the hour-mark and provided the pass for Van Persie’s simple third goal. Walcott would now seem well placed to start the Emirates clash with Liverpool on Sunday – if he can impress in that one, he could also seal his starting role for Arsenal’s second fixture of the gameweek at Spurs. Walcott looks a double gameweek gamble then but, at 6.9 in the FPL, one that some may opt to take.

Blackpool Slump Again
The home defeat means Ian Holloway’s side have picked up five points from their last twelve games and the only real positive for Blackpool this weekend is that all the teams below them lost, too. Olly will need all his powers of motivation to rally the troops, with the Seasiders now facing a critical run of three home games in succession (WIG, NEW, STK) which may just determine their chances of survival. At least DJ Campbell has served his suspension and got some game time under his belt yesterday ahead of next weekend’s vital match against Roberto Martinez’s bottom of the table Latics.

Villa Change Tactics
Gerard Houllier switched systems for the home game with Newcastle, reverting to a 4-4-2 that saw Gabby Agbonlahor join Darren Bent up front. Ashley Young, having had a free role behind Bent of late, moved back to the left wing, though swapped flanks with Stewart Downing throughout the game. This allowed Stilian Petrov to join Jean Makoun in the centre of midfield, giving the home side a more robust edge in the middle.

Villa have been defensively poor this season and this was their first clean sheet in ten games and only their second since gameweek ten. The 1-0 win should boost their confidence ahead of a decent run of fixtures that reads (whm, STK, wba, WIG).

Darren Bent
Owners of the forward can count themselves unlucky, as Bent was on the wrong side of two contentious decisions that, on another day, could have seen him walk away with a decent Fantasy haul. The January signing found the net at the tail end of the first half only for it to be harshly ruled out for offside then, in the second forty-five, was fouled inside the Newcastle box and could easily have won a penalty for his side. Rather than returning two goals or one goal and an assist, he finished the match with nothing to show for his efforts and picked up just 2 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points instead.

Pardew Counts The Cost of Absentees
Alan Pardew already had to do without both Kevin Nolan and Cheik Tiote for the trip to Villa Park due to suspension, but the Newcastle boss also had to rule Shola Ameobi out of the proceedings with inflammation of the knee, an injury the forward picked up on Saturday. Speaking after the game, though, Pardew is keeping his fingers crossed the situation isn’t serious. Such was the visitors lack of options, Fabrizio Colocinni played in centre midfield in the 1-0 defeat, though Jose Enrique did return to bolster the back-four.

Pardew fielded a 4-4-2 formation with the unfamiliar partnership of Nile Ranger and Peter Lovenkrands leading the line, though the pair rarely threatened their hosts. St James’ Park may have seen plenty of goals for the home side over the course of this season, but this game was the fourth in the last five away from home that Newcastle have failed to find the net. A home game with Man United is up next, followed by a trip to Blackpool and a chance to address this toothless form on the road.

Happy enough with my 65 with 1 coming in from Huth this week, 66 - 4 for (Kolarov OUT Luiz IN, Tevez OUT RVP IN and Zigic OUT Wellbeck IN) is looking good enough right now, but if Kolarov and Tevez bust Liverpool up tonight I won't be so happy, in any event I wanted shot of those 3 players anyway so I am not worried.

    This week I am planning:

Young OUT Walcott IN and for 4, VDV OUT Lampard/Malouda IN for a team of:

    Foster
    Carr/Luiz/Walker
    Nani/Lampard(Malouda)/Nasri/Walcott/Adam
    Rooney/RVP(C)

    Begovic/Coleman/Wellbeck/Huth

    Thoughts?

Although I'm sick of VDV personally you should probably get Nasri out instead as they have both been useless of late and VDV has better fixtures and takes set pieces

You'd be best of throwing another chelsea defender in. Midfielders (other than lamps) and strikers are too inconsistent. throw in Terry. And Chelseas fixtures are much easier than RVP's this week. Make lamps captain

Hey, if there are any Americans on here- could you possibly recommend five places to see on a holiday to the US (I’ll probs be going mid august to early september for three weeks and the places have to be east of the Appalachians)?

Don't often reply but this post gets my interest as a Yank who's lived in UK since 2002. Of course the country is massive so you'd never get to see it all, but here are some thoughts:

      East of Appalachians:
      1) Make sure you get up to Maine. Unique, great in Aug.
      2) although it's HOT then, Charleston, SC is also a cool place, very lovely visually & nice culture.
      3) New York, obviously - give it several days
      4) Boston

West: I know this area less well. But I'd recommend:
      1) Colorado. You should see the Rockies. I lived in Boulder for a couple years and it's an interesting little island to visit.
      2) The NW. I've never been to Seattle but always wanted to go.
      3) Route 1 in Cali. My girlfriend did the drive before we met and still talks about it now.

      Hope that helps.

Fabregas is a tough one. He could have easily had a monster score this week, so the signs are good for his next few weeks, but we've been saying that virtually all season about him. It's an absolutely mystery to me how he isn't scoring much better than he is, but it's been the case all season so there's every chance that this trend will continue.

I bit the bullet and shifted Fabregas this week on the basis that I can't afford TWO massively overpriced players (Lamps) at the same time. This could still bite me but I just can't see the value compared with Walcott for example. Fabs played pretty deep yesterday which rings alarm bells, although he did put that wonderful pass through that Nasri fluffed.

Right, kind folk. Got 2.8 in the bank, and looking at one of two possible moves. Either getting rid of Coleman for Terry, or VDV for Malouda.

Bearing in mind that which ever player I keep this week (Coleman or VDV) I'll have to play, which transfer do we reckon?

Favouring the former, despite already having Luiz. I think that I'd want VDV back in a couple of weeks anyway for there double, and with him presumably still being on set pieces, I can't see him continuing this poor scoring form.

I REALLY want to get Valencia in.....

2.5% ownership and 4,6,11 in his last three.....

Still can't bring myself to sell nani though so I'm thinking of shipping out nasri for him after his double- wise move?

oooh yh Nasri was awful against blackpool! ive been thinking of Valencia too as he is a good diferential to have! its really tight though with Dempsey. If Bobby Z starts then i would say Dempsey is likely to play a midfield role instead of a more forward role! i would say for fulhams DGW i would drop demps in

Not really, why have both Nani and Valencia? Nani is by far the better pick. I agree with losing Nasri after the double but there are better options then Valencia.

Was at the train station when I saw that Maynard had scored at the weekend. Was so excited that I started sprinting down the runway to catch up with my brother to tell him the good news... Tripped over my bags and fell flat on my face, right in front of a train packed with passengers. Terrible scenes.

    Luiz Coleman R Johnson(Kolarov Huth)
    Nasri Lampard(C) Nani Young Bentley
    RVP Gyan (Odem)

That's how I'm looking at lining up for GW 33, been wanting to shift Kolarov & Bentley for a long time (and Odem up till 2 weeks ago but he's staying now!) and don't really want to spend more than 4 points.

Thinking a simple Bentley > Adam and leaving it at that. Just wondering if there we any decent suggestion to improve or good defender to get in for Kolarov?
