Thomas Vermaelen returns to action for Arsenal and declares himself fit for the weekend game against Chelsea. David Moyes reckons Jack Rodwell is benefitting from Mikel Arteta’s departure, while Roberto Martinez lavishes praise on one of his Wigan wingers. Here’s this morning’s Scribbles, folks:

Last night saw the return of Thomas Vermaelen to first-team action for the first time in two months. The Belgian played in Arsenal’s 2-1 Carling Cup win over Bolton but was withdrawn towards the end of the game and while post-match reports had earlier indicated he had to come off due to a calf problem, Vermaelen confirmed after the game to he was fine:

It was great to be back and to get time on the pitch. I felt fresh, I’m OK and am available for Saturday.

Ju-Young Park scored in only his second game for Arsenal last night as the Gunners came back from one down to send Bolton out of the cup. Arsene Wenger sang the praises of the South Korean and reckons he’s now in the mix for league action:

He showed intelligence in his link play with others, the quality of his movement was exceptional and his finishing was absolutely fantastic. He’s ready to play a league game.

Sir Alex Ferguson named a strong side for Man United’s trip to Aldershot last night. Nemanja Vidic’s return to domestic action saw him partnered with Phil Jones in the heart of the back-four, while the likes of Dimitar Berbatov and Antonio Valencia celebrated rare starts by grabbing a goal each in the 3-0 win.

With a goal and assist in the weekend game at Fulham, Jack Rodwell caught the eye. Speaking yesterday, David Moyes reckons the red card the midfielder received against Liverpool, and its subsequent withdrawal by the FA, has helped improve Rodwell’s game. Moyes also went on to admit Mikel Arteta’s move to Arsenal has had a positive impact on the player:

In a way, I think the backing he has got off everyone after the red card has actually helped him – to see everyone felt it was the right thing to do has shown him his tackle was a good tackle. He’s tackling in training and the way he’s gone about things has improved….I think Jack’s feeling as if he might have to be one of the main men since Mikel left. Before, he was always just ‘the boy’. He has to take on that mantle and he’s just beginning to look as though he might be able to carry it. He’s got the ability to score with both feet and he’s a good striker of the ball. I think he’s beginning to believe a wee bit more.

Owen Hargreaves is injured again. The midfielder is out of tonight’s Carling Cup game with Wolves and is set to miss the weekend’s league match with Mick McCarthy’s side after suffering a knock in training. Hargreaves received a kick on the calf that has prevented him from training for the last few days, though is expected to return to full training with Man City this morning. Coach David Platt described it as nothing more than a niggle.

Aston Villa have suspended Barry Bannan until further notice amid allegations of drink driving. The young Scotsman has made a strong start to the domestic campaign but a club statement announced he will be unavailable for this weekend’s trip to Sunderland. Villa received some good news yesterday, though, with Chris Herd’s red card overturned by the FA after his wrongful dismissal against West Brom last Saturday. Alan Hutton is doubtful for the weekend, however, after picking up a facial injury in the home defeat by the Baggies.

Man City finally found Carlos Tevez guilty at a disciplinary hearing yesterday, after the Argentine’s defiance at Bayern Munich a few weeks back. The bottom line, though, is that he is now available for selection to Roberto Mancini, though it’s doubtful whether the City boss will ever recall his former skipper. Tevez looks set to appeal the decision and reports even suggest he is looking to sue Mancini for defamation of character.

Roberto Martinez reckons the return to fitness of Albert Crusat will be significant to Wigan’s bid to push up the table. The winger has been blighted with an ankle injury since joining the Latics this summer but made his first start in last weekend’s narrow defeat at Newcastle. Martinez said yesterday:

The way Albert plays, the explosive pace he has and the impact he can make, can really kick-start our season. It was great to see him involved at Newcastle and I thought he looked very sharp. As you saw, Albert is a player who will flourish in the Premier League, someone who’ll give us a lot of options in attack. We have to be patient with him while he finds his feet, but, once he does that properly, he’ll be worth the wait.

Newcastle suffered an injury blow yesterday with the announcement that Cheik Tiote is a doubt for Monday night’s trip to Stoke due to a knee problem. The Ivorian has been an ever-present in Alan Pardew’s midfield this season and has been instrumental in their unbeaten start to the campaign. Steven Taylor has a broken nose but is likely to play, though should miss tonight’s Carling Cup match with Blackburn.

Tony Pulis received some good news on the defensive front yesterday. Jonathan Woodgate has missed the last three Stoke games due to a calf problem but could feature in tonight’s Carling Cup clash with Liverpool.

My WC team could have -

Cleverley, McAuley, Wilkinson, Simpson & Gabbidon who are all potential risks, is this foolish? I could upgrade all round if I got shot of Silva, I think that's the safer option in the short term. What say you?

      Yes, it is foolish.

Throw in Assou Ekotto for Gabbidon and Shawcross for Simpson and the defence looks a lot stronger.

Any WC team should probably have Silva in it

BAE would come in for Gabbidon & ShawX for Wilkinson. Simpson would go to Santon, if hes playing 90 mins by then. but to do this i'd need to go without Silva VDV Rooney or RVP

I'd say the Premier League is Mancini's priority, so I really can't see him resting Aguero. I may be wrong though.

Wolves gave City a real test last season - 4-3 after being 4-1 down.

I have to disagree. City are 5 points atop in the league - the last three games, Aguero has a total of 1 goal in 100 minutes play time, whereas city have won by a combined score of 14-2. He played 74 Minutes the last game, and their Champs league game is a must win for their group. I can see him playing, but if so his time will be limited. Like I said earlier in the year, it will be hard for him to keep a goal per 35 min average. Suarez took 11 shots last game - 2 at the post and a few great saves from ruddy. Id say hes due for a biggie, if not this week then next week. Will be captaining him for both.

He then missed the next match because of injury ....

Perhaps ... I think he either plays 65 mins or 25 mins .... maybe 25 mins is enough based on:

                  a) His sub appearance vs swansea
                  b) The impact of citys subs vs united

You must have a very similar team to me. It's tough to take any of those three out, but I'm thinking of taking Jones out soon, purely down to the fact that Fergie is likely to rip apart his defense after the 1-6.

    Hi All,

I have been so patient with Suarez, I wanted to change him to RVP three weeks ago. Which has cost me a 60 point lead in my mini league. I am so tempted just to do it now, but please can someone persuade me it is the right thing to hold onto him for just 1-2 weeks more.

Also would the move Bosingwa>Wilkinson Suarez>rRVP be a sensible option to fund the change?

See it this way, the next two GWs are the only easy games LIV have for ages. If there's one time in the season you'd pick Suarez, it would be now. And you already have him. If he doesn't perform now, don't ever pick him again.

I've given him an ultimatum to do something spectacular these two GWs or be forever banned from my team.

I'm thinking of exactly that move btw, snap.

I've had him virtually every GW and it's GW9 now, quite carefully trying to avoid kneejerks and only ditching him for suicidal fixtures. So all in all I'm getting a feel for the kind of points/games the Uruguayan mentalist returns over the medium-long term, ie. not very impressive. Brilliant player but if he doesn't finish what can I do? It's not a slump in form either relative to last season; his points/games weren't that great then either.

Well fair do's, and maybe Ade is a better option. But I still see Suarez getting into lots of scoring, and assisting, positions and that's very encouraging. Liv haven't been playing that great so far so his form may improve with the team, especially with Stevie G back.

Yeah I'm just scared it's a mentality problem - that it's the kind of player he is - skilful and wasteful. I know Stevie G might work well with him. Are you thinking of risking him over this tricky run of fixtures?

Ditto, keeping Sturridge for now but prepared to let go as the fixtures get worse - it is a complicating factor that Arsenal's defence has improved and this GW could be tricky. I guess it helps that Drogba got sent off doesn't it?

I don't think so given he and Torress fighting over central and Studge is battling Anelka, Mata, Kalou. But his form speaks for itself, to me anyway, and I think he's staying in the side for the foreseeable.

I note that your team is just a single point above my own, so I guess neither one of us have made enough good calls. Ce la vie. Best for the rest of 2011/12 Isacki,

By gameweek 4, everybody gave up on RVP - Roouney had 8 goals already and RVP had 1. Now RVP is just two goals from top scorer. Luis Suarez is a hat trick away from being in that same position. and with 2 potential goalscoring games, it could be a real possibility that in 3 weeks time, people are considering keeping him for their 2 difficult fixtures. Suarez is class, hes been just keeping up with 4 single goal games, but he can turn that around on the drop of a dime, and I fully expect him to over the next couple of gameweeks.

Well it seems everyone is now behind the idea but here goes anyway!
                  VORM – RUDDY
                  KOMPANY – R TAYLOR – BARNETT – N TAYLOR – BOSINGWA
                  EAGLES – SILVA – NANI – MURPHY – SINCLAIR

I would love that front 3 at the moment, I think it's the 3 to have over the coming weeks! Nani>VDV seems a no brainer really, Barnett gets forward quite a bit for Norwich so i think he's better than my Tierney.

It's a good team, Eagles is a nice exciting player to have. You might want Nani back in a couple weeks, hopefully one of RVP/Aguero will get injured and the decision will become easier to spread money around haha.

Look to move out Ryan Taylor soon for ShawX, Newcastle have some bad fixtures coming up!

I have a tenner on City to beat Wolves FT, which might be a slight risk. But City's second team is so ridiculously good I can't see them struggling to win.

BTW isn't it cool how Wolves are playing City in the cup 3 days before doing the same in the league? Might give extra Fantasy info.

Yeah true, my one above was more a speculative effort looking for value.

You might get a decent first goalscorer bet in that match depending on who City play in their team.

Given we have like no idea what team Mancini ever plays, I guess for first goalscorer, I'm going to have to bet in-play or just before the match when the teamsheets are announced. I guess Balotelli, Dzeko are shouts. Kolarov seems to get set pieces now so I feel insane I could get greats odds on him.

Yeah, that's the sort of thing I'm going to be looking at.... Kolarov from a free kick could easily come off ... 20/25-1 here we come

Even Adam Johnson you might get decent odds on first goal if he plays and he looked bang in form a couple of weeks ago

Johnson is class, Milner is proving better than I thought, Nasri is lethal, Dzeko has scored four - and they all can't stay in the team. City could field a second Prem team and probably make Europa League lol.

          Boys will be boys!

          My defence would be:

          ShawX - Nailed.
          Simpson - depending I know
McAuley - praised a lot so can't see being replaced yet
Baines - Nailed for you and rightfully so.
Naylor/Brown - Both have fairly decent fixtures

          Consider:

Vidic over Baines - Will start to get some decent game time and I expect to be getting involved again very soon.

Kompany - Not too expensive and a good set piece attacker it seems!

Kyle Walker - If he gets the same amount of game time he seems to push forward nicely!

Friedel/Hart - Could get you some nice points if you're willing to risk it!

How many pens will Baines score this season? 3? 4? 5 MAXIMUM?

Everton won't keep that many clean sheets and the options for defenders in much better teams (Kompany, Richards, Jones, Bosingwa, Enrique) are staggering that it makes absolutely no sense to me to bank on 3-5 goals from the spot. The price is WAY too high.

Sure, he'll lead the league in assists for a defender but that won't be enough to cover the loss $$$$ you could be spending on better players. Ludicrous.

Krul for Given is sound long-term but New fancy some tricky fixtures ahead in the short-term. Since you're clearly rotating with Vorm, check New home fixs and see how tough they really are, I think most of the Barcodes' real toughies are away, so it might still be worth doing now.

Imagine how easy fantasy football would be if there wasn’t a “organise by points option”. I hate that i get players in before they hit form and then they stop being a differential as soon as they have one good week. A player you have one week is then owned by the rest of your mini-league the next. Wish it was more about actually following football rather than just checking up on the FPL site.

You wouldn't get price rises and profit either then. Don't worry, people who bring in your players are likely to suffer from chasing last week's points. Profiting from them just adds to the fun.

    Please can you RMT?

    Vorm (Given)

    Kompany, Simpson, Bosingwa (Ward, Gabbidon)

    Silva, Petrov, VDV, Dyer (Moses)

    Rooney, RVP, Adebayor

I have one free transfer and 0.3m in the bank.

Kings of Lyon! Firstly, thank you very much for your input - truly life-saving!!! 😀

      Now ... Check Vorm's HOME fixtures against Krul's ... 😉
Get Olsson instead of McAuley, and R Taylor instead of Simpson/Santon
      Get Allen/Johnson/Tiote instead of Moses
Have another look at Larsson ...

        Not a problem my friend.

I looked at the Vorm & Krul combo and it's good but not as good as Begovic & i'm willing to pay the extra to double there as Stoke are great at home.

Olsson is one to watch but he is that 0.5 more expensive and if funds are tight they are tight.

I have taken a 0.3 loss on Moses and after watching I think he'l get me this value and some points back.

Larrsson is on my radar tooo but he is only one booking away from a suspension, if i can afford him over Sess i may look into it.

        Thanks for the advice 🙂
