Thomas Vermaelen returns to action for Arsenal and declares himself fit for the weekend game against Chelsea. David Moyes reckons Jack Rodwell is benefitting from Mikel Arteta’s departure, while Roberto Martinez lavishes praise on one of his Wigan wingers. Here’s this morning’s Scribbles, folks:

Last night saw the return of Thomas Vermaelen to first-team action for the first time in two months. The Belgian played in Arsenal’s 2-1 Carling Cup win over Bolton but was withdrawn towards the end of the game and while post-match reports had earlier indicated he had to come off due to a calf problem, Vermaelen confirmed after the game to he was fine:

It was great to be back and to get time on the pitch. I felt fresh, I’m OK and am available for Saturday.

Ju-Young Park scored in only his second game for Arsenal last night as the Gunners came back from one down to send Bolton out of the cup. Arsene Wenger sang the praises of the South Korean and reckons he’s now in the mix for league action:

He showed intelligence in his link play with others, the quality of his movement was exceptional and his finishing was absolutely fantastic. He’s ready to play a league game.

Sir Alex Ferguson named a strong side for Man United’s trip to Aldershot last night. Nemanja Vidic’s return to domestic action saw him partnered with Phil Jones in the heart of the back-four, while the likes of Dimitar Berbatov and Antonio Valencia celebrated rare starts by grabbing a goal each in the 3-0 win.

With a goal and assist in the weekend game at Fulham, Jack Rodwell caught the eye. Speaking yesterday, David Moyes reckons the red card the midfielder received against Liverpool, and its subsequent withdrawal by the FA, has helped improve Rodwell’s game. Moyes also went on to admit Mikel Arteta’s move to Arsenal has had a positive impact on the player:

In a way, I think the backing he has got off everyone after the red card has actually helped him – to see everyone felt it was the right thing to do has shown him his tackle was a good tackle. He’s tackling in training and the way he’s gone about things has improved….I think Jack’s feeling as if he might have to be one of the main men since Mikel left. Before, he was always just ‘the boy’. He has to take on that mantle and he’s just beginning to look as though he might be able to carry it. He’s got the ability to score with both feet and he’s a good striker of the ball. I think he’s beginning to believe a wee bit more.

Owen Hargreaves is injured again. The midfielder is out of tonight’s Carling Cup game with Wolves and is set to miss the weekend’s league match with Mick McCarthy’s side after suffering a knock in training. Hargreaves received a kick on the calf that has prevented him from training for the last few days, though is expected to return to full training with Man City this morning. Coach David Platt described it as nothing more than a niggle.

Aston Villa have suspended Barry Bannan until further notice amid allegations of drink driving. The young Scotsman has made a strong start to the domestic campaign but a club statement announced he will be unavailable for this weekend’s trip to Sunderland. Villa received some good news yesterday, though, with Chris Herd’s red card overturned by the FA after his wrongful dismissal against West Brom last Saturday. Alan Hutton is doubtful for the weekend, however, after picking up a facial injury in the home defeat by the Baggies.

Man City finally found Carlos Tevez guilty at a disciplinary hearing yesterday, after the Argentine’s defiance at Bayern Munich a few weeks back. The bottom line, though, is that he is now available for selection to Roberto Mancini, though it’s doubtful whether the City boss will ever recall his former skipper. Tevez looks set to appeal the decision and reports even suggest he is looking to sue Mancini for defamation of character.

Roberto Martinez reckons the return to fitness of Albert Crusat will be significant to Wigan’s bid to push up the table. The winger has been blighted with an ankle injury since joining the Latics this summer but made his first start in last weekend’s narrow defeat at Newcastle. Martinez said yesterday:

The way Albert plays, the explosive pace he has and the impact he can make, can really kick-start our season. It was great to see him involved at Newcastle and I thought he looked very sharp. As you saw, Albert is a player who will flourish in the Premier League, someone who’ll give us a lot of options in attack. We have to be patient with him while he finds his feet, but, once he does that properly, he’ll be worth the wait.

Newcastle suffered an injury blow yesterday with the announcement that Cheik Tiote is a doubt for Monday night’s trip to Stoke due to a knee problem. The Ivorian has been an ever-present in Alan Pardew’s midfield this season and has been instrumental in their unbeaten start to the campaign. Steven Taylor has a broken nose but is likely to play, though should miss tonight’s Carling Cup match with Blackburn.

Tony Pulis received some good news on the defensive front yesterday. Jonathan Woodgate has missed the last three Stoke games due to a calf problem but could feature in tonight’s Carling Cup clash with Liverpool.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    ROONEY and Tiote out

    VDV and Balotelli in

Is that dumb for two weeks, then bring Rooney back in and dump Suarez(tough fixtures)

New team would look like this

    Vorm/Given
    Bosingwa/Simpson/Woodgate/Ward/Kompany
    Silva/Dyer/VDV/Ramsey/Moses
    Suarez/Balotelli/RVP

dyer did well away at wolves...unlucky not to get an assist or two. He's a busy bee and at home has a marginally better chance of an assist or goal, particularly since bolton's away form is pretty poor.

Also check out Swansea's home form....its a fortress against such lowly opposition. I've got the same issue and have picked dyer (home) rather than Petrov. If bolton score it's likely to be only one.

Shawcross and Naylor must play on home form. The third to play is a trickier situation. NEW at Stoke could end goal less, Liv at WB have a decent record, but I would favour Jones at Everton, on the basis of a big reaction from MU to last week and Eve's poor scoring record so far this season.

    1. When I show loyalty it works brunt and RVP show this.

    3. When Nasri hits form and scores well again if I had sold him I would be seething.

I'm WCing so it's the perfect oppurtunity to clear the deadwood. He's a decent player with decent fixtures. I wouldn't be spending 4 points on getting rid.

For info - If Everton lose to Chelsea tonight both Everton & Spurs will be out of the Carling Cup. With the Quarters to be played W/C 18 Novemebr, there is a potential date in the calander for the match to be replayed. Meaning GW13 would be a double game week and see Everton away to Bolton and Spurs away to WBA before playing each other at WHL.

What do people recon Torres chances of scoring against Arsenal and of scoring a few this season in general? I just bought him and am tempted to captain him as a bit of a punt but its purely based on how sharp he looked in the CL game. I can see that his stats haven't been great for a while. Anyone recon he'll have a good season? Cheers

Short memories...the lot of you. Suarez is a surgeon that's just shooting bad right now. The "he's not a finisher" meme is getting old anyway. What other team in the premiership has changed their midfield and strike-force more than Liverpool since the beginning of the season? Not even Chelsea

Oh I'm a sucker for a price rise... Might have to do Suarez > Aguero today. YES I know 'Pool have fixtures and Suarez has undoubted quality, but from 9 gameweeks he has yet to hit double figures once and has an average score of 4 points per game - not hugely encouraging. Aguero is 1.7 more expensive, but can reap huge rewards, even with the possible rotation.

Will be taking a 4 point hit but I'm on a price sensitive plan. Watch this come back and bite me!

If the DGW disussed above goes ahead. What are people looking to do for coverage? VDV and Ade or just the one? Drenthe too? They look like the usual suspects. Sadly, I can't see Baines featuring much. 0 assists and 1 CS when 2 pens were missed does not bode well, sadly.

Have to disagree. Baines is FPL tried and tested in an Everton team which is starting to look good and have just come to the end of an horrific 4/5 fixtures. He's back in my team soon. Here's to hoping he goes under the radar..

I've been a massive fan of Baines for ages - he's gold. But awkward to fit in your team in this year's game. You're also sacrificing a captaincy choice by having him.

I'm sure I'll have back at some point. Hopefully, I can catch his hauls. This game is so tough. Makes you really consider whether the players you desperately want are definitely worth it.

I have VDV and Ade at the moment, I may think about adding Drenthe just for a little punt for his price i think it might just be worth it knowing he is playing twice! Plus I think he is more likely to play showing that he is on form, Moyes will realise this and make him one of the starting XI

    ******CORRECTION********

If Everton lose to Chelsea tonight both Everton & Spurs will be out of the Carling Cup. With the Quarters to be played W/C 28 Novemebr, there is a potential date in the calander for the match to be replayed. My Idea is to have one captain choice from top 6. Other option would be

VDV, Gerrard, Nani, Ben Arfa, Silva
    Graham, RVP, Sturridge

This is just trding Suarez for Gerrard(currently have both) - So Gerrard and Graham, or Drenthe Suarez. Leaning towards Drenthe Suarez- although with second option team selection is much easier.

Right chaps- I have exactly enough money to do Nani & Sinclair to VDV and Walters. Should I do it? I presume price changes will mean i can't do it after today. I do have Rooney for united attacking coverage and don't like sinclair's fixtures after this GW. Thoughts???

Nani to VDV is good, Sinclair to Walters should be done after this week though or you'll miss out on a big score.

This is true, Walters has already gone up this week, doubt he'll go again so Saturday pm should do.

sinclair to walters only. Nani to VdV is neither here nor there and certainly not worth a hit. Squeeze both in at some point in the future if you can

I am doing the unthinkable and selling Kompany. Ouch.

Anyway, I have Aguero and Silva as City attacking coverage. However, Balotelli is suspended for Europe, I believe? Thinking aloud, I could have all 3 for Wolves at home as I'm on WC. Could be 0-0, could be a goal fest. However, Balotelli would be only a one week punt before I switch him to RVP for WB @ home.

Alternatively, play it safe long term and save the future transfer by having RVP in a week early than planned, at the expense of Balotelli?

I think Balotelli has served his suspension already.

Nope. Balotelli's not suspended anymore. Definitely keep RVP. Can't see any reason why you'd want Balotelli if you have Aguero and Silva. That too at the expense of selling Kompany. Madness imo

If Balo has served his suspension then my decision has been made. Cheers.

I'm thinking definitely Kun up front and probably Balo @ El Madrigal.

Cleverley from next week? Anyone considering him as a good budget mid?

I've got a rule where I would always have the best player from a worse club than an average player from a top club ....

Therefore Pilkington > Cleverly for me ....

I will only pick top club players that I can consider captaining. When choosing your squad, who do you pick if you were to have Pilkington at home to Wigan vs cleverly at home to bolton? you prob go with cleverly although fantasy wise not the best choice.

I can see him going straight back into the team (his absence has somehow coincided with our slide in form) but even when he was playing well and United were playing well his scoring wasnt all that great really.

I can see him in too but can't see SAF pairing him with Anderson yet, though I believe tht is his preferred pairing.
