Mikel Arteta is ruled out for Arsenal’s showdown with Man United. Chris Smalling and Phil Jones are fit for the champions, Roger Johnson looks set to return for Wolves, while Martin O’Neill is in line for a defensive boost ahead of the visit of Swansea:

Arsene Wenger gave a substantial injury update this morning ahead of Arsenal’s match with Man United. The Gunners boss revealed Mikel Arteta is definitely out of Sunday’s showdown and conceded he is far from optimistic on the availability of Thomas Vermaelen, with the Belgian a major doubt. Thierry Henry is due to have a test on a calf problem on Saturday, while Wenger also admitted full-backs Kieren Gibbs and Bacary Sagna are two to three weeks away from a return.

Chris Smalling and Phil Jones will both be available for Man United for the Emirates clash. The defensive duo missed out in last week’s home win over Bolton but Sir Alex Ferguson revealed this morning they are both fully recovered. Anderson suffered a setback in training and is unavailable.

Harry Redknapp is confident that Jermain Defoe can come into the Spurs side against City on Sunday and have a big say in the title race. Defoe is of course more-or-less guaranteed a place in Spurs’ starting XI with loan star Emmanuel Adebayor unable to play against his parent club. However, it seems that owners of Adebayor do not need to worry about the Togolese striker regaining his place in the side against Wigan the following week, Redknapp said:

With Emmanuel Adebayor here, it’s been a case of Manu and who else up front?

West Brom manager Roy Hodgson is confident that midfielder Graham Dorrans can fill the hole left by Paul Scharner’s likely absence against Stoke tomorrow. Scharner is struggling to recover from an Achilles injury and Dorrans, who has only played a bit part role for the Baggies this season, is looking good to replace the Austrian. Hodgson said:

It’s a chance for Graham Dorrans, who has done well in recent games when he has come on. He is also getting better and better with every training session. He is a quality player. You don’t lose that quality but sometimes you get rusty if you are not playing or have had injuries like he has.

Wigan face a midfield headache with Mohamed Diame on international duty and David Jones doubtful with a calf injury. However manager Roberto Martinez has no other fitness worries with Albert Crusat returning successfully from his back injury against Manchester City on Monday.

Wolves are set to welcome back captain Roger Johnson for their vital midlands derby against Aston Villa on Saturday. Johnson, who was a vital part of the Wolves defence that kept Spurs at bay last weekend, has been feeling the effects of the ankle injury he picked up against Birmingham two weeks ago. Wolves are without a clean-sheet since their stalemate against Aston Villa back in August but could break that run in the reverse fixture this weekend.

Everton gaffer David Moyes will once again have to put a together a makeshift defence for the visit of Blackburn with Tony Hibbert and Phil Jagielka still someway off a return. However, Sylvain Distin is making a good recovery from the injury that he sustained against Spurs and will be given every chance to prove his fitness prior to the Rovers game.

Fabian Delph has returned to old club Leeds from Aston Villa. The midfielder joins up at Elland Road on a twenty-eight day emergency loan deal and pre-empts the deal that will see Johnny Howson join up at Norwich. Paul Lambert confirmed this morning he expect the Leeds skipper to have completed his move to Carrow Road by the weekend.

Reports suggest Ryan Shotton and Rory Delap may be sidelined for Stoke’s game with West Brom tomorrow. With Jermaine Pennant currently out of favour, the Potters could be set to turn to Ben Marshall to solve the right wing berth.

Martin O’Neill received some positive injury news ahead of Sunderland’s home game with Swansea. Wes Brown and Titus Bramble are making strong progress from groin and Achilles injuries respectively and may be set to feature, with O’Neill admitting:

Wes is improving and so is Titus. The news on Wes has been good this week and we’ll see how he is today, as we will with Titus. But Wes, perhaps more than Titus, might have a chance for this weekend. They’re certainly looking better than they were at this time last week.

Captian choice.... its a toughy this week, the Captain Poll doesn't really help and both sunday games could go either way... stalemate? or Goalfest?

For some random reason i have the big (C) on Walters with my (VC) on RVP

Other Viable options include: Aguero, Silva, Dempsey, Fletcher, Bale.

    What's everyone else thinking?

I don't think Bale is viable compared to all other options.

The captains poll Top 10 (as at now) is:

      1. RVP (could be goals at both ends, but IMO not a goal fest like the last time)
      2. Sessegnon (Has form along with a nice fixture)
      3. Sturridge (I wouldn't risk with doubts over playing time)
      4. Dempsey (Will play in a more attacking role with Dembele out, could score well)
      5. Aguero (Stong home form, however I expect a low scoring game, 1-0 or 2-0 to City)
      6. Torres (For me, a possible Diamond in the rough this week)
      7. Gerrard (Easy Bolton defense with no Cahill, however be wary of his playing time due to Carling Cup semi against Man City on Wednesday)
      8. Walters (Strong home form, penalties etc)
      9. Rooney (as RVP)
      10. Silva (as Aguero)

I have 1,4,5 & 7 in my team and the armband is on Dempsey if it helps.

I'm downgrading riise - senderos in my WC masterplan, to allow me the money for a switch torres - aguero in the punt doesn't come off. But i only need 1,1 m for that, and i have 1.9 m. What to do with the extra 0.8m?

    Vorm, Lingergaard
    Huth, Shawcross, Haangerland, Senderos, Raylor
    Silva, Bale, Dempsey, Sessegnon, McClean
    RVP, Torres, Best

    I'm thinking maybe:
    1) upgrade McClean - Moses, so i have a 5th midfielder I can probably leave for the rest of the season.
    2) upgrade best? I would get helguson, but i'm pretty sure QPR will buy a striker. I don't expect morrison or graham to score more than best in the 4 games I plan to keep him
    3) bank the money for a rainy day
    4) anything else?

Absolutely. Raylor and Best will become Santon and Ba. Hang on a minute. I was going to have to downgrade a defender as well as part of the Ba plan, but with this extra money, I don't have to. That settles it then. Bank the extra cash for now. BOOM!

I'd argue that "upgrading" your team doesn't necessarily mean spending more. McLean to Moses is not what I would advise. I'd rather McLean over him any day. Mcleans price will rise if he keeps performing so you'll stash will increase too.

Hold out I say. If your desperate then Best out as I can't see Newcastle doing too much up front while Ba is absent.

Smalling and Jones should be more nailed on than Evans, IMO - better players and more flexibility (Smalling can play RB and CB, Jones CB, RB, CM, Evans has played left back but was poor).

I hope the team will be Lindegaard, Smalling, Jones, Ferdinand, Evra - Nani, Carrick, Giggs, Valencia, Rooney, Welbeck - or Rafael, Smalling, Ferdinand, Evra with Jones CM instead of Giggs.

I would say Evans (Fergie's preferred Vidic stand-in), then Smalling (can play RB or CB but probably won't play CB with Ferdinand very often, they're too similar), then Jones (because Fergie won't want him to play too many games as he is only 19).

Any suggestions for my WC team?

    Sorenson (Krul)
Shotton- Cahill- Simpson (JEvans - Senderos)
Dempsey - Velencia- Silva- Bale (Surman)
    Fletcher - Aguero - RVP

Probably captain aguero or dempsey this week

    Cheers

Shotton injury risk, may even play right back so OOP goes out the window.
Cahill - rotation risk and Norwich always score

      Rest looks good.

        Cheers mate.

Accept Cahill is abit risky but i think he'll do well at chelsea and i've got senderos first on the bench if shotton doesn't play. Just hope he gets 60+ if he does!

I wouldn't double up at the back with Stoke/ Newcastle.

Look at Stoke/ Fulham or Fulham/ Newcastle.....I am a fan of the double up (I'm going for Stoke/ Fulham in my WC)

Wouldn't have cahill right now, maybe get in Riise/Kelly to up on fulham, they rotate very nicely with stoke

Talk about desperate times, I'm deciding between

    a) Westwood -> Mignolet, and
    b) Reo-Coker -> Mclean this week

    Who gets your vote?

    Westwood, Ruddy
    BAE, JEvans, Simpson, Caulker, Wilkinson
    Nani, Bale, Dempsey, Ramsey, Reo-Coker
    RVP, Rooney, Adebayor

    Who to captain people?

RVP, Aguero or a crazy armband for Skrtel?

I'm forth in my league and it's very tight so I'm looking for differential.

Other options in my team: Nani, Bale, Silva, Assou-Ekotto, Williams, Taylor R, Dyer.

Think I'm there and settled now:

    Mignolet, Lindegaard,

    Shawcross, Baines*, Kelly, Huth, Senderos

    Silva, Surman, Bale, Dempsey, Sessegnon

    RVP, Aguero, Crouch

    * To be taken out after 1 or 2 weeks, probably for Kompany/Richards.

It's a bit risky, but I think Fulham and Stoke could pull through defensively, particularly in the short/medium term.

Damn that Arsenal team. I feel I need Valencia desperately now as he's against Miquel and Benayoun/Arshavin
Shall I sacrifice Walters until GW 24 or is home to west Brom too good a fixture
Silva v Spurs but then definitely need him for WK 24 too
Dempsey with two homers has to stay?
Bale though Id need him next week for sure
Sessegnon is so in form it cant be him?

Backing against Wigan this week is even more sensible given that lynchpin Diame is away at the ACON/CAN/AfCON for a bit.
It's just a shame that they are away to a QPR side in flux and with limited standout options.

What the best 3 defenders to get in WC team, out of the following five?

    Kelly, Senderos(E), Simpson(E), Shotton, A.Ferdinand(E)

    E = Expensive.
