Last week saw Newcastle make the first major foray into the January transfer market with the purchase of Papiss Demba Cisse from Bundesliga side SC Freiburg on a five-and-a-half year deal. The fee, thought to be in the region of £7.5m, sees Cisse link up with fellow Senegal international Demba Ba on Tyneside and affords Alan Pardew a lethal looking front pairing for the second half of the season…

With both players currently on international duty in the African Cup of Nations, Newcastle fans will have to wait a little longer to see the duo in action on Tyneside. Even if Senegal progress as far as the semi-finals – and the resultant final or third-place play-off- both will be back in time for the gameweek 26 home clash with Wolves at the very latest.

Cisse, having flown back from his country’s training camp in order to complete the deal, admitted the persistence of Alan Pardew played a big part in sealing the deal:

Newcastle have continually shown an interest in me. The time has come for me to show what I can do here now. I met Alan Pardew and I had a very good conversation about the future. I was very impressed by what he said and the plans for the club moving forward. The manager has shown a lot of trust in me by giving me the No 9 shirt here and now my objective is to repay that faith in me. I am very excited about the future.

The Statistics

The twenty-six year old began his career in his homeland with Douanes Dakar, scoring 23 goals in 26 games before catching the eye of French club Metz. Joining the Ligue 1 side in the 2005-06 season, he was quickly loaned out in order to gain more experience. Cisse headed off to AS Cherbourg, where he bagged 11 goals in 26 appearances.

Cisse returned to Metz the following season but, despite 32 games and 12 goals, he failed to convince and was, once again, farmed out to a fellow-French side, this time moving to LB Châteauroux on loan. He managed just 4 goals from 15 appearances before returning to his parent club for the start of the 2008-09 campaign. This time, he remained a first-team fixture for the next two and a half seasons, before SC Freiburg snapped him up halfway through 2009-10, with Cisse’s record for Metz standing at 35 goals from 92 games.

Cisse managed just one full season and a couple of half campaigns in the Bundesliga but was a major success. In total, he grabbed 37 goals from 65 games, a fantastic record despite plying his trade for one of the lesser clubs. Last season, only Mario Gomez scored more times in Germany’s top-flight; the Bayern man netted 28 times to Cisse’s 22. The Senegal international had already scored 9 times in 15 games this term, despite his club nestling in the relegation slots.

The Prospects

Let’s face it; Mike Ashley isn’t going to part with that sort of money for a bench-warmer. The fact that he’s been handed the iconic number 9 jersey sums up Pardew’s faith in Cisse, too; it’s pretty much a given the new boy has been brought in to partner Ba up top, with Pardew’s penchant for 4-4-2 affording him plenty opportunity to impress.

While Ba has proven to be one of the major success stories of the season, it’s obvious there’s an over-reliance on him to produce the goods; the former West Ham man has scored 15 goals, more than the rest of the Newcastle squad combined, with Leon Best’s 4 the second highest goal tally for the Magpies.

Cisse’s introduction should go a long way to remedying that. His pace, power and direct game should fit in with Pardew’s system, as the Magpies boss explained:

Ever since Andy Carroll left, Papiss was my first choice. He is a finisher with an already-established CV in the Bundesliga, where we have monitored him for the best part of two years. He’s a player who plays off the shoulder and wants to go in behind, but he’s got a little bit more to his game than that.

Newcastle have exceeded all expectations so far, sitting sixth in the league, despite scoring just 32 goals; the least of the top six clubs. With (WOL, SUN, NOR) all arriving at the Sports Direct Arena between gameweek 26-29, Cisse has been handed the perfect opportunity to get his career on Tyneside off to a flying start. Yet to be priced by Fantasy Premier League, he should come in around the 7.0 mark and, with his eye for goal, looks set to offer Fantasy managers a viable alternative to Ba up top as the season unfolds.

I don't think he does. He can play Kompany, Evans and rotate Brown, Simpson and Caulker easily enough and if Evans is out his defence is solid enough to cover.

seems we are on the same page Mull... the only caveat, is that United's fixtures are tough, and I fill the quota with two defenders.

I think Aguero is too much Citeh, so I would suggest Adebayor.

As a matter of policy, there is too much money in that midfield, do I would downgrade either Dempsey or Valencia to someone 7.0 or less - I like Etherington. Also, I don't personally like doubling up, and I don't like Swanseas fixtures, so McAuley for Caulker for me, and as you have Lindegard, I would swap in Senderos for Evans.

However, my main pair are Koscielny and Assou-Ekotto, so I'm not good on the possible rotations ...

i'd heavily consider droppin vorm. caulker is great value and should get very similar points to vorm for cheaper plus u won't exactly want to play both too often so that kinda makes one of your defensive rotation spots defunct. with their fixtures i'd reckon one swan dfender is enough. also i'd consider droppin simpson. santon i'd say is as nailed on and a superior player. morison has great points and looks a good cheap attacker although i personally think he's kinda $hite.

So basically its better with two NUFC rather than Swansea, and he rotates better with Lindy. Fair enough. But Lindys position is not so secure, so the rotation argument is not too strong imo. My idea is to play Lindy every week (as United can clean the sheets anywhere), with Vorm as backup. It also costs me 0.4 more to get Krul in, so I am not entirely convinced.

I have been mulling Simpson to Santon also (can do a straight swap). So I guess when Pardew says he has won the spot, he will keep it.

Morison, hehe, his poaching has been excellent though. I have also considered Keano... hah

Cannot possibly know until they've played a few games together. Sometimes two similar strikers works a treat (Alan Shearer & Les Ferdinand), sometimes it doesn't (Trevor Benjamin & Ade Akinbiyi). They dont even play together regularly for Senegal.

Ba isn't on pens to start with. He's going to be behind Shola and possibly even Cabaye, Cisse has a very impressive penalty record too so no guarantees of any one of them being the main taker.

Yeah he is. Why else would he take the penalty against Utd with Cabaye on the pitch. Plus with Cisse's arrival, Shola's gametime is most probably going to disappear.

But Arsenal do not do clean sheets! Surely the main purpose of a defender is to get the clean sheets and the attacking pts are a bonus.

Thus Verm, Koscielny (I know you like him Doos) etc are not worth it IMO.

I agree, Ars are having defensive problems right now as they have no full-back and are thus forced into playing cbs or inexperienced full-backs out there which makes them vulnerable, it happened to United a couple of years when every defender bar Evra was injured and we went to Craven Cottage with a back 3 of Fletcher, Carrick and Evra.

When they get everyone back, Verm could be a good investment

I think the fletcher wagon last week, which is still chugging along this week, has got to be up there with drenthe for ffs boob of the season.

Give me Welbeck, Morrison, zamora or even Graham for a budget striker anyday.

A wolves player just violates any team anyhow imo, so drab

Drenthe was consistently crap in FPL following his bandwagon.
Fletcher has gone one week without scoring since the bandwagon started, it's not a failure yet.

Thoughts on my WC for next week.

    Lindegaard, Vorm

    Richards, Vermaelen, Clichy, Huth, Cahill

    Bale, Silva, Valencia, Dempsey, Sessegnon,

    RVP, Zamora, Helguson

Great fixtures for Zamora & Helguson in the next 6 weeks.

1.2m in the bank for Ba/Cisse on their return from ACON.

No Newcastle coverage at the back but not sure if this is a big deal.

I guess you're rotating Sess, Valencia and Zamora then?
Not a bad team, your weak strike force gives you a great defence and mid, but I can they'll feeling that the great fixtures want necessarily translate to points for both Bobby and Helguson, I'd prefer to spend a little bit more up top for security, but its not a bad team 😉

Newcastle defence is a better idea once Tiote is back, you're alright without for now

Was thinking Ade but I reckon Bale is enough Spurs coverage.

Bent doesn't score enough for Villa and Keane is a cheap alternative.

Man City coverage on the WC is a flipping nightmare.
I think Silva and Kompany are nigh on essential as they are both consistent and near enough nailed on.
Which then leaves picking one from:
Hart - Will get picks but may be better off with rotating keepers.
Richards - Good potential for assists not quite nailed on but plays plenty of games.
Clichy - Possible bargain, plays most games but little attacking output.
Nasri - Flair pick but looks like he's hitting form. Probably too many midfield options right now.
Dzeko - Potential bargain, should play with Mario out - has good points to minutes ratio.
Aguero - Good player, should score over the upcoming fixtures and nailed on.

I think Richards covers the most bases as in my mind he counts as attacking coverage too. Who are other people going for?

I'm thinking Richards Silva Aguero, but have some doubts over the value of aggy.

      Nasri would be flair

Hart is just to expensive IMO, I looked at the idea of playing him or Cech every week and getting a cheap second keeper, but it's still around 1 million more than most of the best rotations.

Richards will play 90% of games, especially now City have no FA Cup, unless he's injured Richards will play. Kompany is nailed on, but is maybe slightly less of an attacking threat than Michah.

Silva. I toyed with the idea of losing him, but he's just too damn consistent and is a must have IMO. Dzeko, will be fairly nailed on whilst Mario is banned, but after that who knows. Aguero is nailed on, capable of delivering big hauls, especially at home, but tends not to perform away and is expensive

IMO it's Silva then 1 or 2 of Komps, Richards and Aguero
