Hatem Ben Arfa has yet to convince Alan Pardew he is worthy of a first-team start. Sir Alex Ferguson rues his decision to bench Javier Hernandez at Chelsea, Martin O’Neill vows to be patient with Wayne Bridge, while John Obi Mikel returns to training for Chelsea this morning:

Alan Pardew has admitted Hatem Ben Arfa faces a real battle to establish himself in the Newcastle first XI. The Frenchman found himself dropped for last Sunday’s home game against Villa, with Pardew opting for the work-rate of James Perch in midfield instead. With Papiss Demba Cisse joining Demba Ba up front, Ben Arfa’s preferred role, tucked in behind a lone forward, looks out of the question, given Pardew’s penchant for a 4-4-2. The Magpies boss said:

Hatem still hasn’t quite grasped, in my opinion, this Premier League. He’s got unbelievable talent, but he’s not used to it. He’s got to fight now to get in this team. He could still have a massive impact on this season, but we need to see him at his best. He isn’t out of the picture yet.

Sir Alex Ferguson has hinted that Javier Hernandez may be set for an increase in game time, after his performance at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. The Mexican has fallen behind Danny Welbeck in the pecking order this term and has started just two of United’s last eleven league matches but, having climbed off the bench to grab the equaliser at Chelsea, has given his manager plenty to mull over, as Ferguson admitted:

To be honest, I think I should have played Chicharito from the start. When he came on he had them on toast. He really put pressure on them with his movement and positional play. Danny Welbeck is a terrific player and he is going to be a top player, but when Chicharito came on it was a different game.

This seems to raise questions against Welbeck’s first-team prospects, then. He has started four of United’s last six up front and has been the preferred partner for Wayne Rooney up front, but Hernandez’s display and his manager’s subsequent comments raises question marks over his role over the new few gameweeks.

Martin O’Neill is keen to allow Wayne Bridge time to settle in at Sunderland before handing him a start. With the loan signing some way short of match fitness, the Black Cats boss is prepared to utilise Kieran Richardson at left-back until Bridge is ready to step up. O’Neill alluded to Bridge’s previous loan spell last term as the reason behind his thinking.

He is just settling down. I am mindful he was thrown in at the deep end last year. At West Ham it was thrust upon him. I would like him to see the surroundings a bit more. It was pleasing to get into the Norwich game, that was encouraging enough for him.

John Obi Mikel has returned to training for Chelsea today. The Nigerian has been sidelined since the gameweek 17 draw at Spurs, missing a run of games that have seen Andre Villas-Boas’ side pick up just two wins from seven. With the likes of Ramires injured, Frank Lampard a doubt, and Michael Essien still finding his feet since returning from long-term injury, Mikel -if he proves his fitness- will give the Blues a midfield boost ahead of Saturday’s trip to Everton.

FPL-wise, last night’s goalless draw at Anfield saw Glen Johnson yet again lead the way for bonus points. With Jose Enrique missing out with a hamstring problem, Johnson moved to left-back, with Martin Kelly stepping in on the other flank, and his display once more stood out in the EA SPORTS PPI. Johnson grabbed the maximum 3 for the fourth time this season and has now picked up 14, more than any Liverpool player. Clearly, his displays from full-back are ideal for the bonus system, with a combination of defensive work and crossing proving pivotal in his allocation, as the home side recorded their third clean sheet in the last four.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Right, desperate help needed. Ba is killing me and his price going through the roof with everybody having him Ba me (geddit) and this could change my mini-leagues. I think Ihave to downgrade Sess to McLean but reluctant as Sess is on fire. Went 3-5-2 a few weeks ago, regret it now. Team is below, but who to drop?

    Vorm - Sorensen
    Micah - J Evans - BAE - Simpson - Kelly
    Silva - Dempsey - Bale - Valencia - Sess
    RVP - Aguero - Morison

    A
    Micah - J Evans - BAE - Simpson - Kelly
    Silva - Dempsey - Bale - Valencia - McLean
    RVP - Aguero - Ba

    B
    Micah - J Evans - 4.3M Def (McAuley?) - Simpson - Kelly
    Silva - Dempsey - Bale - Valencia - Sess
    RVP - Aguero - Cisse

Sorry for long post but not getting Ba in could lose me my leagues !

A trifle harsh possibly, a def doesn't have to play well to get a CS after all. He isn't an all time great that's for sure but a 4.3m def who is seemingly nailed on to utd's defence is pretty rare. I think I'll hang on until he gets dropped.

Stay at 3-5-2 its the best possible formation unless you have defenders that are guanteed to keep clean sheets which doesn't seem to be happening at the moment with any of the Premier League teams. The midfields are banging in the goals this year, while only 2 strikers have really stood out for me RVP and Ba. The others started off strong but soon drifted off.

I have thought about dropping Aguero but with City's fixtures that doesn't seem too good. Or do you think downgrade Aguero and upgrade def/GK? I do love that MF, I think there is defo more value in a strong MF this year.

Beware of dropping rvp, I've learned too many times this season that the man is a beast, if you done nothing but capt rvp all year- would your rank be lesser/same/greater, in all honesty I think I definatley would have more points than I have now !

Good enough reason imo. I'd be looking to have a differential in the starting XI for the remainder of the season in order to make up ground. Don't know if that helps or is of any use to you. I think Zamora is a good one for this GW.

yeah I need differentials, it's highly competitive up here. Zamora looks good with QPR's fixtures. Even Sturridge might rise from his slumber, who knows..

Taarabt might be a decent differential if you are thinking of a punt on a QPR player. He was excellent against Wolves and could be further forward playing off Zamora now that Cisse is banned

      Ekotto --> Taiwo/other and Valencia --> Mata?

      Sessegnon & Valencia --> McClean & Mata?

Not sure if you even want Mata but those would be the sorts of things I would consider.

I had Mata for sometime but didn't reap any benefits during that time. He might do a Silva like last season and explode. He is a sleeping beauty who is about to wake up as Chris Glover's article pointed out.

Risky but could pay off. Steven Gerrard has scored a number of times against United in recent memory and with Phil Dowd taking charge of the match, you never know when a penalty pops up. I think he leads in terms of penalty awarded among referees

you might well regret that, stevie loves scoring vs united. that said dempsey has a great fixture. the transfer makes sense, but this season doesnt. could easily see dempsey getting a blank and gerrard a goal+assist

I have Mignolet starting this week. They are capable of shutting them out. Bolton did it last week, Arsenal are not the same side away from the Emirates and it's a Martin O'Neill setup who are the form team in the league!

Unless you've got another WC I'd just get someone you want to keep for basically the rest of the season - there's always sexier transfers to make than your keeper / sub keeper!

Some weeks you'll only get a 2 from your keeper, this would probably be one of those weeks but it wouldn't bother me.

Dzeco rotation is the problem when Balo comes back. Looking at Mata myself also - Chelsea have one of the best runs of games over the next few weeks, especially among contending clubs. Nice to have another WC in one's back pocket. g luck.

I transferred him out with my winter WC for the same reason. Obviously too early with his performances against city and wigan, but I think he will struggle in the upcoming fixtures. He's also not a captain choice except for this week which means the risk is a lot lower.

I really can't get a break this year. 3 BP for G.J. just to annoy me !!!!!!! arhhh Sold him for Kompany.

At the same time I want to apologize to all Komp owners. I jinxed him twice this year. Last time in the same GW when I bought him he got straight red card, now the same GW I am buying him he is getting injured for who knows how much time. Last time when i sold him, City went on a run and he was bringing the points GW by GW.

Sorry lads and I can't put my self together with those G.J 3 BP. He was my ultimate differential. Arhhhhhh 🙁

        just over 3/1

id be wary of newcastle just starting with one upfront tho, if you're backing cisse wait for the lineups i reckon

Not as long as you find somebody else who is scoring points in the same or better way...

Don't know that I would say essential for anyone, but he's one of the players I definitely want in my team. I had him pretty early and rode the points all the way until the ACON. Hard to say whether Cisse will affect his output, but I'm sticking with him.

Best replacement for Brown? Have 4.7 to spend.

Other def are Richards, Santon, Senderos & Huth.

I am, but Brown is definitely out for a couple of months and still holding out hope that Huth's red is rescinded.

Get rid of Huth first, but best replacement would be Taiwo/Rangel/Evans
