Per Mertesacker is set to be sidelined with an ankle injury. John Terry returns to light training for Chelsea. Emmanuel Adebayor praises his new strike partner, Carlos Tevez sounds far from apologetic, and Alan Pardew hints that Ryan Taylor is crucial to Newcastle’s midfield:

Reports suggest Per Mertesacker could be out for more than a month with an ankle injury sustained in Saturday’s win at Sunderland. The German slipped in possession, allowing James McClean to fire the Black Cats ahead, and was subbed off with the problem at the Stadium of Light. His absence looks likely to afford Thomas Vermaelen a return to centre-half, with Kieran Gibbs set to make his first appearance since October.

Chelsea issued an injury update on defensive duo John Terry and Ashley Cole yesterday. Terry –who hasn’t played since Gameweek 22- returned to light training, while Cole is set to be monitored, after picking up bruising of the calf in the weekend loss at Everton.

Carlos Cuellar admitted he is happy to play anywhere for Aston Villa right now. The Spaniard has started Villa’s last three games, stepping in for the injured James Collins, then, upon Collins’ recovery, moving to left-back against City on Sunday, as Alex McLeish shook things up after a poor performance at Newcastle the previous weekend. With Richard Dunne out for up to eight weeks with a fractured collarbone, though, Cuellar is likely to return to centre-half alongside Collins once again.

While Peter Odemwingie earned the plaudits for his hat-trick at Wolves, Roy Hodgson has praised another of his West Brom forwards- Marc-Antoine Fortune. The Frenchman had played no part in the Baggies league season until Gameweek 21, and has since started their last four, even playing in a withdrawn midfield role at Molineux, with Odemwingie the lone striker. Judging by Hodgson’s comments, he looks to have went some way to securing a first-team place:

He looks a different player. He continued to work hard and fight even through the lean moments where he was sometimes not even on the bench. I’ve admired him for that. A little bit of confidence could be the reason for things looking up and his loan spell at Doncaster helped him a little bit as well. All those factors play a part and against Wolves on Sunday I thought he was very good.

Emmanuel Adebayor has talked up his partnership with Louis Saha, after the pair dismantled Newcastle at the weekend. Starting for the first time together as a strike duo, they grabbed 3 goals and 5 assists between them, as both banished their recent poor form in sensational style. Saha hadn’t netted in any of his previous fourteen appearances for Spurs and former club Everton, while Adebayor went into the match with no goals in his last seven. The latter admitted they have struck up an instant understanding, saying:

It was easy because I know him from France and I know how he plays. We talked a lot before the game. I know where he goes on the pitch and we talked a lot on the pitch. That made it easy for us.

The papers are full of the Carlos Tevez Fox Sports interview this morning. While the Argentine heads back to Manchester, with Roberto Mancini expecting an apology in order to consider playing him again, Tevez –as always- was in defiant mood. By the looks of things, Mancini will need to be in a very forgiving mood if he is to turn a blind eye to Tevez’s ranting, with the player – despite insisting he wants to win back the fans’ support- going on to claim:

He’s in the middle of an argument so then he tells me to keep on warming up and treats me like a dog. I was just sitting on the bench and you can see from the footage that I was calm and just talking with Zabaleta. Mancini said some horrible things to me.

Alan Pardew’s call for a swift response to Newcastle’s defeat at Spurs was intriguing for Fantasy managers. While Cheik Tiote and Yohan Cabaye are regarded as crucial to the Magpies’ midfield, Pardew seemed to allude to the loss of Ryan Taylor at the Lane as significant, too, going on to say:

We had three key midfielders missing, and when you play a team as good as Spurs, you need all of your best players. We didn’t have that and we were punished for not having round pegs in round holes.

In Taylor’s absence on Saturday evening, Pardew started with Gabriel Obertan on the right, before introducing Shane Ferguson at half time in a damage-limitation exercise, with his side already four down. Judging by Pardew’s comments’ though, Taylor – the sixth most popular player in the FPL game right now with 35% ownership – seems in the driving seat for that right midfield berth for the game against Wolves, providing he can recover from an ankle injury in time.

Benching Sessegnon, Sigurdsson and Evans - none of whom I am particularly comfortable benching.

This might be the time to finally buy Ryan Taylor after all then. As a full back I was not particularly interested and I feel he lucked out a lot but if being a first choice OOP player I might just get him for the massive failure that is Robert Huth

Ahh, Lescott! I hate goal scoring defenders. I wish they'd make all goals worth 4 pts, it would get rid of a massive fluke element to the game.

Who was that defender who played on the left wing for Pompey a few years back? I hated him too!

They kept a fair few cleanies though. I remember them being top of the league after six games and had barely conceded a goal. (I.e. I can't quite remember if they had).

I've been putting people off buying R Taylor for the last 6 weeks or so with Santon first taking his place and them seemingly Ben Arfa / Obertan ready to take his place in RM.

However, this is the first time this season I am seriously considering buying him. Obertan was awful vs Spurs and is far more likely to be used as an impact sub and I don't think Ben Arfa has the discipline to play wide right. R Taylor is exactly the sort of player we will need for the Sunderland match after Wolves and if he's fit, he's a great shot to start vs Wolves too.

Very tempted to do Baines & Graham --> Raylor & Ba this week, if Everton get through to the next round of the FA Cup (long story).

Is Vermaelen set to return to centre back now? I sincerely hope so because he actually bombs forward from CB and scores points, while at left back he seems reluctant to get anywhere near the final third. Not to mention the fact that Verm at CB instead of Mertesacker infinitely improves their clean sheet potential. It would certainly save me another transfer.

Yes? No? What do you reckon?

I guess it depends how much value you would lose on Bale and how much that would impact the rest of your team.

So what was the deal with Richards being benched? Freak occurence? Slight injury? Will he be back in the starting line-up regularly?

Anyone been in a position where they haven’t used one of their 2 frees?

Realise the FA cup games could changes things with injuries, but pretty happy with my team for next GW and can’t see an obvious change…

    Sorensen SWA (H)

    Simpson WOL (H) / Shawcross SWA (H) / Kompany BLA (H) / Taiwo FUL (H)

    Wright-Phillips FUL (H) / Dempsey QPR (A) / Silva BLA (H)

    Aguero BLA (H) / Van Persie TOT (H) / Ba WOL (H)

    Bench: Schwarzer, Bale, Moses, Kelly

Madness to have bale benched away to arsenal?!

Bale out for Wright Phillips. There's something you don't see every day.

always like having a punt on one player in the 11 - brought SWP on winter wc and with good fixtures and some decent strikers in front of him think he can deliver, saying that he would be the one to go for bale...

Balotelli, anyone? Much cheaper than Aguero, will steal his penalties and Dzeko wasn't great in his absence.

With Aguero being a beast at home there's no contest over the next two gameweeks.

And in the long term Balo is just not worth his pricetag for a rotating player IMO

      - If Tevez does get his act together Aguero + Tevez will be frightening!

With the news that Vermaelen should play CB (which is the position he plays best and and where he gets goals/assists/bonus from) would you play him this week at home to Spurs or bench him and play Evans away at Norwich?

Play Vermaelen all day long. Neither of them look good for a clean sheet but Verm has so much more attacking threat than Evans

Apologies as im sure this has been asked a million times but with the CL games over 4 days, does it mean we can change captain / subs each day or the usual once?

Nice one, so essentially you could have had 4 different captains by the end of the GW? Thats very interesting.

    Mclean-Lampard-Silva-Valencia

    Rooney-Aguero-Adebayor

Hi guys would really appreciate some advice on what to do with my team!

    Vorm, Lindegaard
    Richards, Evans, Williamson, Caulker, Shotton
    Dempsey, Silva, Bale, Valencia, Sessegnon
    RVP, Aguero, Ba

I'm working towards Mignolet, McClean and Rooney in for Lindegaard, Sessegnon and Aguero. That will leave me with 6.3m to replace Shotton (either Lescott or Liverpool/Spurs Def).

    cheers!

Looking ok, so I would use your FT to sort out Lindegaard this GW, as other issues will become more pressing in a few weeks time.
