The second leg ties of the last sixteen of Champions League action are now almost upon us. With two of the eight fixtures taking place this evening, European Fantasy managers will be finalising plans ahead of the 7.30pm deadline. Here follows our mini-brief on each of the eight matches…

Arsenal vs AC Milan

With the 4-0 whitewash at the San Siro last time round, this fixture looks set to go either one of two ways. Logic will see most sane men agree that Milan look destined to make the Quarter-Final stage, but it is how Arsenal combat that belief which will decide the tie and our interests in it.

Arsene Wenger has plenty injury problems and, at present, has just two fit central midfielders. The Gunners boss admitted he’s inclined to play four strikers, due to a lack of alternatives, though while unsure on formation, it’s clear Arsenal plan an all-out attack against the Serie A leaders.

For this reason the team talisman, Robin Van Persie, is the man we’ve got our keenest eye on as a short term investment. If the Gunners are to score the four (or more) goals needed to escape the vice grip of Milan, there is no doubt the Dutchman will be on show.

His counterpart Zlatan Ibrahimovic is rolling off a domestic hat-trick and will be looking to put the sword to Arsenal again. With the hosts bombing forward, there will be plenty gaps in the backline for the big Swede to exploit.

One to watch: Robin Van Persie (Arsenal), Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Milan).

Benfica vs Zenit St. Petersburg

If the first leg was anything to go by, we’re in for a treat. Zenit edged a five-goal thriller in Russia, with both sides showing plenty of attacking menace. We’re hoping for more end to end action and, with that in mind, are backing a couple of players with strong recent history on the goal front.

Benfica may have slipped domestically, turning their unbeaten league record into one point from nine, but Oscar Cardozo is still a major threat – he grabbed both goals in the 3-2 defeat to Porto most recently.

The après winter break in Russia has only just kicked in so it’s hard to gauge the form of Zenit quite as clearly. Roman Shirokov bagged a brace in the first leg, as well as a goal for his mother country in the recent international break. He’ll need to be at the races as his side try and keep one up on Benfica tonight and, for that reason, gets a watchful eye from The Scout.

Andrei Arshavin may have left Arsenal to join the Russians on their transfer deadline day, but he is ineligible to play – if you were interested.

Ones to watch: Oscar Cardozo (Benfica), Roman Shirokov (Zenit).

Barcelona vs Bayer Leverkusen

Pep Guardiola’s men head into this fixture a lock for progression. Bayer Leverkusen need to score at least three goals at the Nou Camp, while trying to keep the home side at bay. Despite their recent 2-0 victory over Bayern Munich, one would have to rate the visitors’ chances at even slimmer odds than those of Arsenal.

Lionel Messi is well rested after a weekend out of the La Liga spotlight, while a host of characters around him from Cesc Fabregas to Dani Alves via Pedro could all equally dazzle on the night. We expect the home side to comfortably win but the risk of rotation will definitely be there for all to see. If you have any Leverkusen players, you might want to plan ahead and offload them now.

We’re far from confident on the German side’s chances but, as is the nature of these articles, we feel obliged to represent each team in our tips. Stefan Kießling has scored 3 goals in a run that has seen Leverkusen win all three Bundesliga matches since their first leg defeat to Guardiola’s side- it may be a big if, but if the visitors are to breach the Barca backline, he’s the man most likely.

Ones to watch: Dani Alves (Barcelona), Stefan Kießling (Leverkusen)

FC APOEL vs Lyon

On the evidence put forward in the first fixture we don’t have the making of a multi-goal thriller [his famous last words]. FC APOEL have to score at least one goal -this much we know for sure- but, having failed to net in each of their last three Champions League games, we’re inclined to look at the men keeping guard at the rear, with the home side’s ability to keep Lyon at bay crucial to their chances. Any of their bargain defenders could be on radars for that very reason.

At the other end we’ll pick up a goalkeeper for our considered thoughts. APOEL’s lack of attacking output gives us cause to believe that Lyon stopper – and new captain of France- Hugo Lloris stand a solid chance of chalking up back-to-back clean sheets.

Ones to watch: Paulo Jorge (APOEL), Hugo Lloris (Lyon)

Bayern Munich vs FC Basel

Our first leg preview mentioned how the Bavarian outfit were verging on entering territory that can only be classified as a slump- Jupp Heynckes’ men backed this up by falling to a 1-0 defeat in Switzerland. A few weeks later and Munich are very much entrenched in a “sticky patch” which has seen their chances of regaining the Bundesliga title from the hands of Borussia Dortmund slip further away. A weekend 2-0 defeat by Leverkusen is the latest kink in the road which has seen Bayern fall 7 points short of the leaders.

With over a week to go, and a home game against Hoffenheim at the weekend ahead, performances and optimism could wildly increase before their must-win tie with FC Basel but, as things stand, Munich need a kick in the backside to reverse the tie and get the job done. While Heynckes has a bounty of attacking options to call on, none of them can quite spark like Arjen Robben at his utmost best. Bayern fans will be hoping the Dutchman can replicate his recent brace for Holland in the 3-2 win over England.

With plenty of home-grown talent, Basel offer European Fantasy managers a chance to balance their budgets by buying players at low prices with room for plenty of reward. With the goal advantage, combined with Bayern’s recent form, there’s plenty belief that a place in the next round remains a distinct possibility. Fabian Frei at just 4.7 -having risen from a lower than low 4.0- is an option of many around.

Ones to watch: Arjen Robben (Munich), Fabian Frei (Basel)

Inter Milan vs Marseille

Picking up a mere two points from their last seven domestic games, Claudio Ranieri’s side have been in dismal form in Serie A. Barring a complete collapse from the teams above them, Inter won’t be in the Champions League next season and, with a 1-0 reverse from the first leg, they are on the verge of saying goodbye to this season’s competition, too.

Indeed, their last nine games in all competitions has seen a shameful record (0W, 2D, 7L). Only Gabriel Milito and Diego Forlan have scored over this spell -in the two draws- as Inter have struggled to show any sign of cohesion. We’re almost reluctant to pick a player for the home side due to their recent displays but Forlan stood out in the 2-2 draw against Catania, with a goal, assist and 7 shots- for this reason alone, we’re sticking our necks out for the Uruguayan, though there’s no doubt his acquisition would be a risky one.

For the visitors, Nicolas N’Koulou has stood out for “recovered balls” and is just 5 points off the overall top scoring defender. If Inter fail to fire, his resilience is likely to be a significant factor. The dynamism expected from the likes of Andre Ayew will be useful if your strikeforce needs a cheaper option than the likes of Messi, Ronaldo and company.

One to watch: Diego Forlan (Inter), Nicolas N’Koulou (Marseille)

Real Madrid vs CSKA Moscow

After a 1-1 first leg draw in Russia, Madrid are heavy favourites. Investment in the Russian outfit will be a risky and likely short term endeavour but that’s not to say there isn’t some profit to be had if the cards are played just right.

The visitors need goals, this much they know, and their midfield options are likely to be your best bet in this long shot fixture. Alan Dzagoev is a good all-round figure but Keisuke Honda, just back from injury, has caught the eye of our gambler’s instinct this Matchday.

Unable to avoid the penchant for a risk, we’re not opting to keep an eye on Cristiano Ronaldo, either. Logic says he’s likely to prove pivotal and produce a substantial Fantasy score but the slow return to form of Kaka intrigues us more and, if given the chance, we reckon his resurrection could continue against CSKA.

Ones to watch: Kaka (Real Madrid), Keisuke Honda (CSKA)

Chelsea vs Napoli

Andre Villas-Boas has left the building and Chelsea’s Champions League hopes are now in the hands of Roberto Di Matteo. Regardless of the man in the dugout, it’s the players on the pitch that have to do their job and, as shown down the years, they clearly march to the beat of their own drum.

Following their first leg defeat in Italy, Chelsea now need to recover a two goal deficit against a Napoli side simply oozing confidence. With rumours of player power having a big hand in the departure of Villas-Boas, one of their most influential figures, Frank Lampard, is afforded the platform to produce the goods. If the Blues are to save their European bacon we’d be keeping a close eye on the elder statesman in midfield; if football really was scripted, this is exactly how it would go.

With the Chelsea defence always prone to a back-line gaffe or two, it’s not hard to see Napoli getting more goals. After a measure of restraint kept us from playing the Edinson Cavani panpipes too much in the last Matchday, we can hold out no longer. The Uruguayan striker is good for goals, simple as that.

Ones to watch: Frank Lampard (Chelsea), Edinson Cavani (Napoli)

If you look at your team and you are unhappy with anyone there, replace them. Don't suffer getting bad points out of someone you didn't want. I would wait til Miyaichi gets some attacking points on the board, then I'll be hook line and sinker.

Yeah I think an Oxlade-style season awaits for him next year at Arsenal. I can't wait for him to play, another devastating pacy winger, but one who loves to dribble and beat his man by footwork - Walcott is relies too much on his pace.

whilst grav changes and overweight swedish men are topical i'd like to share my best grav change ever story.
a couple of years ago Si had a grav of keith from the office (the big fat guy who dresses up as ali G).Si was a top 1-5k FPL player season after season who seemed to dish out some pretty wise stuff. anyway comments started to crop up along the lines of "Si, i can't take you seriously whilst you have a pic of some ugly fat guy." this was a glorious era with buggu around too and his mad gravatar of a crazy bo selecta mask making him and his post-event predictions even harder to take seriously.
anyway... Si disappeared for a day or so and reappeared with a brad pitt gravatar. i lolled

I've done that myself, for better or for worse.

      Aguero -> Rooney
      Ba -> Suarez
      Sessegnon -> Pilkington
      Walters -> Drenthe

If you're going to take an 8 point, now is the time I reckon with a DGW for some players to help bridge the lost points.

Need to recount the story of the guy last season who took AT LEAST a 4 point hit every week, (took a 16 one week) and went from outside top 100k to finishing up 23rd or something overall. Stumped me when I saw it.

Yeah it can def pay off. Guy in my mini league recently took a 24pt hit, which while I wouldn't quite go that far, he managed 92 points or something in a gw where the average was around 50.

        Really? Nice.

Obviously this game is about chasing the highest points scorers each week, so if a calculated points hit helps you achieve a team that you think is going to outscore what you previously had by at least the hit amount (but also in future weeks) then I'm all for them. Especially if you want to take some risks in the run in.

Hey guys, great posts recently on the comments.
I am really out of my thoughts for now - I am chasing a 51 point ml leader, who has done 5 transfers for -12 this week, so he can basically have anything in his team. Now should I take hits aswell or use his -12 as an advantage? My team is injury bound and bit out of fashion - I'm afraid that I'm losing it. Huge decisions ahead:

    Vorm Lind
    Senderos Santon Simpson Enrique Richards
    Dempsey Silva Siggy Valencia Bale
    RvP Ba Suarez

Already made my free transfers, sess to siggy and zamora to suarez before rise/fall. 0.0 bank.

    Now should I take hits?
Would like to get rid of Lind.
    Richards to skirtel is tempting.
No idea on Valencia - I decided to keep, but doubting more every day.
    Downgrade Silva is tempting aswell.
Also need to free up funds for Suarez to Rooney.

Now do you have any advice? I see the chance of not losing league position with hits because he is -12. But it could be beneficial for me not to do any more transfers.
So should I try to fix my team or stick?

I could really use some opinions on wc team:

Got green arrow this week and pushed up to 431 overall. (gw1)

I saved my wildcard for now and i think its the right time to use it, as i already did!

My team is linked. The thing is I think Im going brave with this moves, but Im getting Young, Rooney, Pog instead of Demspey, Aguero, Ba. That leaves me with Man Utd overkill with Young, Nani and Roonpig. But according to their form I think iam doing the right thing.

Mid and Att will look like this:

    Siggy Silva Young Nani (McClean)
    Rooney RVP Pogrebnyak

    Thoughts? Thank you.

Anyhow i do think that Young Nani Rooney Pog will outscore Dempsey Nani Aguero Ba. Was thinking even to get Silva out and leave Demspey but his away record is crap and i do think that Pog will get the goals and pens.

I would advice against getting rid of Dempsey for now, especially given your position. One of Young/Nani should be more than enough, that leaves you with a spot for Evans as well.

I'm just gutted for you there's another manager from Macedonia ahead of you. Excellent rank, keep up the good work. As for your WC team, I would advise against losing Dempsey - good fixtures and he's bang in form. Personally I'd drop Silva, Aguero & Ba for Young, Rooney & Suarez (if funds will stretch?)

Was thinking of getting Evans instead one of Nani/Young for 3 playes from man utd coverage. Thou i cant really decide who to leave in team for now 🙁 i think much will be more clear after thursday.

As for Suarez, if i go with back line of Vorm/Ruddy - Jose Enrique, RTaylor, Simpson, Kelly that will leave me with 4.4m for a def. That is if I go with Young. If i go with Nani, it leaves me with 4.0 for a def.

My 1st thought was to go with Skrtel JEnrique Rtaylor Simpson Kelly. But Suarez might as well be a good punt hmmm.. Thank u for the advice!

I can see why you think United overkill could be a good thing given form and fixtures, but I think it is rare that Young and Nani will fire big in the same match.

I would be more inclined to swap one of them and then bring in a United defender to spread the cover, and to soften the blow if they were to win by just 1-0 or something.

That would also help when Valencia comes back and rotation could begin.

Good thinking but could easily be 1:1 or 2:1 like in last match with tott so i dont really fancy evans 🙂 As for young nani combo, even if they dont score in the same match ill get the points from 1 of them that went on fire. And could easily transfer young > valencia when he returns.

I notice something here and really dont like it. A lot of people here doesn't watching games at all, just see players fantasy score and than speaking who is great and who is crap.
For example, Ashley Young did great job at Sunday, 2 goals, 1 assist, but....did you watch that game?
Assist was from corner - ok, he does that and every 5-6 games will be some goal from his corner
First goal, he was just on good place after Nani's cros and ball in a crowd
Second goal - great shot from distance while nobody from Tot players was near him
My point, that is all great but how somebody here can talk that he is now a great great player and Nani is a crap. And people buying more him than Nani. But, remember a first few weeks in August, one week Nani was great, next Young, than again Nani....it is just a question who will be The One in which game... So my point is that Young and Nani have 50-50 % chances to brace in next game.
And that is not only example....
    Sorry for my bad english...

No. Players go on form. Wingers even more so than your average bear. It's not 50-50 from game to game. Recently Nani has looked poor at times, average at others with small flashes of brilliance. Young has looked fairly decent and as you have mentioned there is the set play factor coupled with United's excellent record at corners.

Completely agree, Young hasn't actually played well in the last 2 games against the Netherlands and then against Spurs. However, he is one of those players that just gets points, similar to Ryan Taylor who rarely plays very well but will grab an assist and bonus points with ease.

Young is a better FPL player IMO.
Nani far too insconsistent this season and out of form.

I think there is a difference between good player and good fantasy player in some cases. Modric for example is a joy to watch most games, but terrible from a fantasy point of view (as he is invariably the assister of the assister).

Young's problem fantasy wise is the same as when he was with Villa, he scores huge points one week then rarely delivers again for weeks. But, when he scores big he really scores big.

I still rate Nani from a fantasy point of view, he's more selfish than Young and Valencia and more prone to shoot at goal...It looks like he's just being selfish and missing and hopeless...but I see a player creating chances and having more of a chance of a goal (or an assist with Rooney or Hernandez ready to pounce on a rebounded goal effort).

I'd do A, you already have two Pool players. Whilst the same can be said of Utd for you, at least they are spread in terms of position and have great fixtures. Suarez could have a barnstormer, or he could do nothing - which is what he has been doing most of the season so far. At least Roonpig consistently pops up with goals.

What do you guys reckon of the Arsenal - Milan game?

By all accounts it should be a 'dead rubber' after losing 4-0 away without even an away goal. Somehow though Wenger's hype and insistence on playing RVP has just about kept it from becoming one. While this Gooner can't see us going through (a single Milan goal - against an undermanned mid and defence - and it's over) it could be interesting.

The 4-0 1st leg defeat in my view was our worst performance of the season, worse even than losing 8-2 to United, because not only did our defence collapse but we failed to pose a meaningful threat to their goal. Chief to blame for this in my opinion was not even our back four - which was admittedly awful with Verm's positioning suspect - but our central midfield two. There was no protection of the back four; Milan's front three ran directly at them without the slightest hint of screening. The pattern of the game was incredibly repetitive: Arsenal pass too slowly, run out of passing options, lose possession, Milan counterattack through their front three with Boateng, Ibra and Robinho cutting the back four to shreds.

So what's different in this match?

I just hope Arsenal go for 5-0 and if it turns out that they get beaten the other way around, then so be it. Hopefully, Arsene doesn't fear the potential embarrassment of losing 9-0 on aggregate.

It's hard to say. I reckon Arsenal will go all out attack and if they can get an early goal to make Milan doubt themselves a bit it might be a fun game.

Milan, as you say, have added the dimension of counter attacks to their game this season though and the likely scenario for me is that at some point they will get their away goal to kill the game off.

Yeah it's all about the early goal.

If Milan get it, tie over.

If we get it, tie on.

Still agree with you, Milan will get their goal.
