With their city rivals making a statement at Carrow Road yesterday, the Sunday Dugout Discussion opens to see if league leaders Manchester United can hold their nerve and restore a five point lead at home to Aston Villa. It’s the only Premier League game taking place today, and the team news for the encounter is in…

Man United XI: De Gea, Rafael, Ferdinand, Evans, Evra, Valencia, Carrick, Scholes, Young, Welbeck, Rooney.

Villa XI: Given, Hutton, Collins, Baker, Lichaj, Bannan, Ireland, Clark, Gardner, Weimann, Agbonlahor.

As expected, Sir Alex Ferguson restores Paul Scholes to his starting line-up in place of Ryan Giggs. There’s also recalls for Rafael and Danny Welbeck, with Phil Jones and Javier Hernandez dropping to the bench.

Alex McCleish is without the injured duo of Stephen Warnock and Chris Herd, so there are starts for both Gary Gardner and Ciaran Clark.

The Dugout Discussion chatroom can be accessed right here, and will remain open the duration of today’s football, including the FA Cup tie between Tottenham and Chelsea.

Yeah, one thing teams can do to stop the opposition embelishing fouls with dives, is to stop fouling them. What was the Villa player doing sticking out his leg with no chance of making a play on the ball?

What disgusts me is that when a player like Young sees that opportunity, he'll dive knowing it's a certain goal to come from a penalty.

That's just abysmal 'football' though, true footballers will carry on when they can and show that they have the skill to still score/assist despite a potentially poor, but not penalty-worthy challenge.

by not going down he bails out a defender for the opposition that fouled him. Why should he do that?

In this case the contact is possibly enough to slow him that he doesn't get to the ball before the other Villa player does. That warrants a penalty. I'd prefer he doesn't dive to embellish it, but then he risks not getting, due to the flawed officiating structure in football in general.

As for diving when there is no contact or foul. I think this should have a severe penalty, maybe 10 match ban. The refs need help to trust when someone has been fouled.

I agree 100% with this. Retrospective punishment should be used in this manner to make footballers think twice about diving. Needs to be stopped.

But was it a foul that would have brought him down if it wasn't for his theatrics?

I don't think it caused enough impact to slow down Young since he was going full speed and decided to fall, he clearly went over the top pretty much belly-flopping the ground like a wild seal.

going full speed, and trying to turn also. Any contact to the front of your legs in that situation completely hinder you and even probably bring him down eventually.
