[sbu_large_image] Season Review

It seems fitting that Robin Van Persie should bring our team of the season review to a close. Having debunked his injury prone tag with an ever-present campaign, the Arsenal skipper emerged as a peerless Fantasy asset.

So often the saviour in Gameweeks of mediocrity, Van Persie made the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) armband his own and, more often than not, justified the faith shown in him.

Just as Van Persie almost single-handedly decided our fortunes, his influence on Arsenal’s season was just as prominent. At times, it was hard to reject the argument that the Gunners were a one-man team.

Now Arsene Wenger faces a fight to retain the services of his most precious commodity, a player who has grown into a world-class talent and the Premier League’s most ruthlessly efficient performer.

The Statistics

Van Persie made such an inauspicious start to the campaign. We saw just a single goal in his first five league outings, and that was buried in the humiliating 8-2 defeat at Old Trafford. By Gameweek 7, Van Persie’s 12.0 price tag seemed excessive and a steady decline in ownership had seen his value drop to 11.9. From that point on, however, Van Persie’s season was to turn and his ownership would explode accordingly.

The shift in fortunes begun with a brace in the 3-0 Emirates win over Bolton – those two goals brought Van Persie the first of an incredible 13 sets of maximum FPL bonus point hauls. A disconcerting blank in a 2-1 defeat at White Hart Lane was to follow, but the Dutchman was to return a flood of goals in five consecutive matches. A total of nine strikes in those five starts finally saw Van Persie justify his heavy-hitter billing and overshadow the efforts of Wayne Rooney and Sergio Aguero, who had started the season so strongly.

The hat-trick at Stamford Bridge in Gameweek 10 was particularly significant: this confirmed Van Persie as a fixture-proof talent and produced a big swing between the haves and have-nots within mini-leagues. At that point, it became obvious he was edging close to essential Fantasy status.

As the nights drew in, Van Persie’s returns began to simmer a little, although the goals kept coming in singles, with six strikes in 10 starts from November to February. A hat-trick in the 7-1 demolition of Blackburn harvested another spurt of seven goals in five starts, before the Arsenal skipper hit a dry spell which returned just one goal in seven, a spot-kick in the 3-0 win at Wolves.

By the time Van Persie returned to scoring ways with three goals over the last three games, the Dutchman had sealed the Premier League golden boot with a tally of 30 goals, contributing 13 assists and a staggering 45 FPL bonus points.

Such tallies meant that Van Persie topped the FPL overall rankings by 39 points but, perhaps his most significant statistic, was that he had successfully completed 38 appearances – the first time that the Dutchman had remained injury free and ever-present since his arrival in North London.

While Fantasy managers lived in fear of rest and rotation, it never really materialised. A lack of options up front for Arsene Wenger, and Van Persie’s brace scored from the bench in 25 minutes against Stoke, ensured that the skipper remained cemented in the Arsenal lineup, despite his manager’s repeated intent to hand him a rest.

When Van Persie was given an uninterrupted stage to perform, he produced. The previous seasons of frustration were banished by a campaign of excellence in which, at times, Van Persie threatened to break Fantasy football.

The Prospects

Uncertainty continues to surround Van Persie’s future at the Emirates. While recent reports re-iterate that the Dutchman is looking for silverware rather than pieces of silver, even Arsenal’s efforts to shatter their wage structure may fall on deaf ears.

Despite inevitable overtures from Man City, Arsene Wenger appears optimistic on his chances of retaining Van Persie….

“I am confident you will see Robin van Persie in the Premier League and I am very confident you will see him in red and white.”

Fantasy managers will need to wait for the dust to clear on the upcoming Euro 2012 campaign before we’re likely to receive our next set of clues for club, manager or player. There can be no doubt that, if he remains on the Premier League player list, many a Fantasy lineup will be built around Van Persie’s talents.

A price rise looks likely but that may not be a factor: even with a 13.0 valuation, few Fantasy managers will overlook the Dutchman with any degree of comfort. Last season proved that, when kept injury free, his rate of returns is unmatched, his overall involvement and ability to score and create goals, unrivaled by any other striker.

With the FPL captain decision eased so considerably by Van Persie profits in 25 of 38 Gameweeks last season, it seems likely that he’ll present “plan A” for most Fantasy managers next term, regardless of price tag. Wenger’s push for new talent could the be factor that begins to undermine such confidence, however.

Already the arrival of Lukas Podolski is a possible cause of disruption. It’s unclear how Wenger will utilise the German’s talents with Van Persie but, with other strikers listed as possible targets, including Montpellier centre-forward Olivier Giroud, it’s clear the Arsenal manager is looking to boost his options and remove the goalscoring burden from the captain. That could have an impact, both on returns and starts, which would be a concern should we also be forced to contend with a significant price hike.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Damn, got called away. Hope you're still there. Slightly concerned by our Vision. Tweet earlier from ENR:

"Some very impressive team vision statements for the Euro's coming in..."

And it is a selection criterion. Maybe we need to put more work into it 🙂 I might have a little think and see if the Committee will accept a revision 🙂

Hey guys so confused with my euro's team so here are a few quick fire questions! bare in mind this is for gw1 only.

    1) is mandz and jelly too much Croatia? Both great value but Irish are decent defensively
    2) which 2 out of 3 poles, piszczek, blasz, lew?
    3) best 2 strikers for gw1 money no object?
    4) best striker for 8m gw1?
    5) best defender from group B or C for gw1? All my def seem to be from groups A and D currently.

Thanks in advance for any opinions.

      1) I think so. Would rather have Mandz/Jelly and Strinic
      2) Piszeck and Lewandowski. You could also get Perquis for 0.5 less
      3) Germany forward and Dutch forward
      4) Ibra or Lewandowski
      5) Avoid Group B imo. Alba of Spain

Maybe strinic and jelly then and upgrade mandz would work. Those are the 2 I have lewa and pis so that's good!

Alba could be a decent shout, had him in an earlier draft!
The problem is which dutch and German strikers? None convince me to be honest, maybe huntelaar and Muller? At least Muller is nailed on and hunt is then a bit of a 50/50 punt!

Yeah Jelly and Strinic combined are 9mil so that is good value giving you extra funds to upgrade

Podolski or Muller are good shouts and Hunt could be a good gamble if he starts

      2) Piszczek + Lewandowski

      4) Lewandowski/Zlatan
      5) van der Wiel, Jordi Alba, Boateng,

The Belgians are alreasy bigging themselves up for WC 2014. Undeniably, they have a really good squad with a lot of talent, but with them having performed so weakly over the years, their draw will be very very tough as they're 3rd or maybe even 4th seed most likely.

Tvoras although he may not be 1st choice, otherwise Lindegaard, as Sorenson is injured, but the Danes have the worst group chances imo

Lindegaard is now nailed on but Denmark face Netherlands, Portugal and Germany so cleanies are unlikely, to say the least.

Not clear yet which Greek keeper is no.1 but two of the contenders are 4.0m and we should know which one before the first game. And the greeks had a good defence in qualifying.

Re this .....Manchester United have made initial enquiries about the availability of Manchester City's 24-year-old winger Adam Johnson.

    Full story: Caught offside

Sunderland manager Martin O'Neill is also keen on Johnson and wants to give him the chance to rekindle his England career.

    Full story: Daily Mirror

If Adam Johnson goes to sunderland and is 6m or below I hearby predict he will be in the team of the season 2012/13, Fantasy gold...if he can ever play 90 mins.

I am very fond of AJ he definitely needs to get out of City, clearly Mancini doesn't likes him even when he was scoring and assisting in one game he scored the game winner as a super sub and in the post match comments Mancini was expressing some critics again. He never praised him. It will be fantasy gold with MON.

He's a bloody awful footballer with a cracking shot. He looks better when he comes on because teams have been run ragged by City for 75 minutes and are therefore much more susceptible to wingers in general. Whenever he starts he fails to impress.

He could be fantasy gold at a lower club I agree but I don't think he'll make the step back up again IRL.

Hello all. Because I'm a rather helpful and resourceful chap, I'd thought I'd share with you all the Guadian's (UK newspaper, for those overseas) excellent feature series on each Euro 2012 team. Written by journalists from each nation, I've read through a few myself already and there are some very interesting and, potentially, insightful, points made about managers, tactics and individual players by those you would expect to know.

Here's a link to the series, which is not yet complete. They're publishing two new ones a day. Enjoy!

Just read the Greece one....and now to transfer K papa out of my team.

"There are a few options for goalkeepers. Michalis Sifakis, Alexander Tzorvas and the veteran Kostas Chalkias are all good choices for the coach. All of them, however, have been out of their first teams at some point this season, either because they have lost their place or because of injuries. Now for the defence. The duo of Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Avraam Papadopoulos (Werder Bremen and Olympiakos) do not only win the competition for longest surnames of any defensive partnership in the world (probably) but are both tall, athletic, intelligent and in good form. Kyriakos Papadopoulos and Vangelis Moras will act as back-ups."

Jonts, I was never terribly tempted by Greek players anyway, I think 2008 (9 behind the ball, hope for a smash 'n' grab goal) tactics are never going to repeat that success. Could finish bottom of GrpA, IMO.

Found this quote about Poland quite funny: 'If he does not play [Lewandowski] we are doomed big time.' 🙂

Pretty much. I've lots of Reds fans moaning that he's not a 'big' enough name, but they tried Kenny and look how that turned out. Rodgers will bring a proper long-term strategy to the club and expect players to fit into it, or buy new ones where they cannot.

I'd be really excited if I were a Red, Rodgers was one of the names that I was looking at to potentially replace Droopy had he got the England gig. Good luck Brendan.

Exactly. Liverpool fans have got to accept that they Liverpool is no longer one of the biggest clubs in England who can attract any manager they would like. A manager that has a history of making poor teams better is all that they need now.

Phew! It's a labour of love, but I have finally worked out a Sky transfer/captains strategy.

I know none of you care cause you're not playing it, but it meant juggling formations, the fact you have only one captain change per day and a limit of 15 transfers during the group phase. (If you want to appreciate my efforts try to stop and think how complicated all that is...)

Gives me a captain in every game of the group stages as follows:

    Kuba
    Kadlec
    Sneijder
    Ronaldo
    Chiellini
    Jelavic
    Benzema
    Ibrahimovic
    Kadlec
    Ignashevich
    Ronaldo
    Sneijder
    Chiellini
    Ramos
    Gusev
    Ibrahimovic
    Kuba
    Dzagoev
    Ozil
    Sneijder
    Chiellini
    Ramos
    Rooney
    Ibrahimovic

Guys, re the auction league. Can anyone confirm that any teams must have 4 defenders from the players list? Somewhere else, it says that any teams must have 2 full back and 2 CBs, but I cant find who is classified as FB or CB...

No just 4 (at least) are required. No such classification is necessary.

Ok fair enough. Bloody confusing, as they mention 2 FBs and 2 CBs on the Pro Euro teamsheet, and ppl start asking why.

Joey Barton use of the English language is fantastic; 'Brendon Rodgers to LFC! Never seen that coming...'
