After reviewing 15 of the 16 participants in this month’s Euro 2012 tournament, it’s time to roll out the final contenders. The last team to come under analysis in our series of articles is co-hosts Ukraine:

In the final game of Round 1 matches, Oleg Blokhin’s team kick-start their campaign with a clash against Sweden on Monday June 11 at 7.45pm. Next up is a showdown with France four days later at the earlier time of 5pm on Friday June 15 before the co-hosts square up to England on Tuesday June 19 at 7.45pm.

Group D looks likely to be one of the most open of the four. France are one of the favourites, having topped their qualifying group with six wins and a single defeat in 10 matches, conceding just four goals along the way. England also won their group after finishing ahead of Montenegro by six points – they were undefeated under Fabio Capello and shipped only five goals, while Sweden also qualified automatically, after finishing as best runners-up in a campaign that brought 31 goals in 10 matches.

The Friendlies

Blokhin’s side have played 10 friendlies in their build-up for the Euros since last August and have steadily improved over the last few months. Ukraine lost the first three of those fixtures but were unbeaten in the next six, winning five times and drawing once, before succumbing to a 3-2 loss at the hands of Austria last Friday. They have found the net 21 times over those 10 matches and, after a couple of blanks in the first three games, have demonstrated a strong attacking threat, scoring two or more goals eight times. At the back, though, they have been less impressive, conceding 17 goals and returning just three clean sheets.

Most Appearances: Tymoschuk & Konoplyanka (10), Yarmolenko, Butko & Milevskyi (9), Devic (8)

Top Goalscorers: Yarmolenko & Gusev (5), Konoplyanka (3), Milevskyi (2)

Top Assists: Yarmolenko (5), Devic, Gusev & Aliyev (2)

The Likely Lads

Top for both goals and assists over those last 10 games, Andriy Yarmolenko is an obvious choice. Coming in at 7.0 in the McDonald’s game, the Dynamo Kiev man is the most popular player in the Ukraine squad – a low ownership of just 6% suggests a distinct lack of faith in Blokhin’s squad. With four goals in his last seven and a pair of assists in the defeat to Austria, Yarmolenko’s threat from the flank affords Fantasy managers a strong mid-price option and his contribution will be key if the co-hosts are to progress beyond the group stages.

Oleg Gusev has been another stand-out performer over the friendlies – the Dynamo Kiev man returned five goals in addition to providing a pair of assists over just six appearances. The only problem is that Gusev – classified as a midfielder – is currently fielded as a right-back by Blokhin, though it’s clear his attacking potential has been undiminished. It’s also worth noting that a couple of those goals came from spot-kicks when Andriy Shevchenko was not on the pitch; whether Gusev is ahead of the former Chelsea man in the pecking order is perhaps debatable but, at 6.5 in the McDonald’s game, he’s another midfield alternative who could prosper.

Cheeky Punt

Priced at a mere 5.5, Yevhen Konoplyanka is an intriguing proposition. The winger was one of only two players (along with Anatoliy Tymoshchuk) to feature in all 10 of the previous friendlies and grabbed three goals and an assist for Blokhin’s side. Starts look assured, then, and with a mere 0.9% ownership, he’s a definite differential for those considering alternatives to the likes of Yarmolenko.

Up front, it looks like anyone’s guess. Andriy Voronin and Marko Devic have started both the recent friendlies, with Andriy Shevchenko and Artem Milevskyi climbing off the bench against Estonia and Austria respectively. Ukraine have one final friendly on the horizon – against Turkey tomorrow evening – and Fantasy managers will hopefully be given more of a clue as to Blokhin’s thinking. Certainly, if the former two feature from the kick-off once again, they would surely be favourites to start in the group opener with Sweden the following Monday. Devic is by far the cheapest of the quartet and comes in at just 5.0, while Shevchenko – who has struggled with injury over the last couple of months – is the priciest at 7.0 and has proven to be the most popular, with 2% ownership in the McDonald’s game.

With so much uncertainty over the goalkeeper position and the likes of former Barcelona man Dmytro Chygrynskyi ruled out due to injury, the options are a little muddied at the back. Taras Mykhalyk has started the last three at centre-half, however, and looks an assured first-team pick; priced at 5.0 he is likely to benefit from the recovered ball rule, bearing in mind his side’s defensive frailties. Considering Ukraine play on the final day, though, he’s perhaps a little pricey as a final defensive throw of the dice (there are cheaper options in Sweden’s defence, for example) but we’re talking about punts here and Mykhalyk, with a 0.2% ownership, doesn’t come without a degree of risk.

          I replied to your last post btw (defo agree on your Strinic for Abate thing to get Young for Mata in summary)

          People are choosing Affelay on the basis of one game against a youthful Northern Ireland team in a friendly! IMO they're silly and naive as Netherlands will be facing tough opposition in their group and Sneijder will certainly perform better than Affelay in higher pressure games against strong opposition, 100% Sneijder

    ODE ON A GRECIAN URN

    By John Keats

    Thou still unravished bride of quietness,
    Thou foster child of silence and slow time,
    Sylvan historian, who canst thus express
    A flowery tale more sweetly than our rhyme:
    What leaf-fringed legend haunts about thy shape
    Of deities or mortals, or of both,
    In Tempe or the dales of Arcady?
    What men or gods are these? What maidens loath?
    What mad pursuit? What struggle to escape?
    What pipes and timbrels? What wild ecstasy?

    Heard melodies are sweet, but those unheard
    Are sweeter; therefore, ye soft pipes, play on;
    Not to the sensual ear, but, more endeared,
    Pipe to the spirit dities of no tone.
    Fair youth, beneath the trees, thou canst not leave
    Thy song, nor ever can those trees be bare;
    Bold Lover, never, never canst thou kiss,
    Though winning near the goal---yet, do not grieve;
    She cannot fade, though thou hast not thy bliss
    Forever wilt thou love, and she be fair!

    Ah, happy, happy boughs! that cannot shed
    Your leaves, nor ever bid the Spring adieu;
    And, happy melodist, unweari-ed,
    Forever piping songs forever new;
    More happy love! more happy, happy love!
    Forever warm and still to be enjoyed,
    Forever panting, and forever young;
    All breathing human passion far above,
    That leaves a heart high-sorrowful and cloyed,
    A burning forehead, and a parching tongue.

    Who are these coming to the sacrifice?
    To what green altar, O mysterious priest,
    Lead'st thou that heifer lowing at the skies,
    And all her silken flanks with garlands dressed?
    What little town by river or sea shore,
    Or mountain-built with peaceful citadel,
    Is emptied of this folk, this pious morn?
    And, little town, thy streets for evermore
    Will silent be; and not a soul to tell
    Why thou art desolate, can e'er return.

    O Attic shape! Fair attitude! with brede
    Of marble men and maidens overwrought,
    With forest branches and the trodden weed;
    Thou, silent form, dost tease us out of thought
    As doth eternity. Cold Pastoral!
    When old age shall this generation waste,
    Thou shalt remain, in midst of other woe
    Than ours, a friend to man, to whom thou say'st,
    "Beauty is truth, truth beauty"---that is all
    Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know.

    Hi all,

    I have been following this site and comments for the last two years and this is my first post.

    After doing umpteen iterations, I am no wiser to the right combination for GW1. RMT pls:

    Chalkias/ Given

    KPapa/ Kadlec/ Anyukov/ Alba/ Perquis

    Kallstrom/ Yarmo/ Shirokov/ Afellay/ Ozil

    RvP/ Ibra/ Muller

    Zero in bank. Five doubles+ five singles. Is this looking ok if I choose to WC in GW2? Of the teams left out, am avoiding Croatia cover because their performances in friendlies have been meh. France-England looks to be a low scoring draw. And Denmark and Portugal are both likely to get hammered. Is the rationale for the team sounding ok?

        Just one query to any Sweden fans/experts out there. Kallstrom instead of Seb Larsson is a brave move or a foolhardy one?

        Oh EVS, am not a stalker. Just don't have the time/energy during the season to post/follow comments on a regular basis. Hopefully can afford to spend more time during a summer tournament.

      i can sense a goal will be scored by cassano into the spanish net 🙂 although as an Italy fan im really worried that balotelli and barzagli got injured today with the latter not playing any game in the first phase which means a 3-5-2 option wont be so good now .... a 4-3-1-2 will be back meaning the defenders are going to be more familiar with this tactic and hopefully get a CS!

    After much tweaking I've found this is the best balanced team I can come up with. Unfortunately I can't fit in some of the players I wanted like Yarmolenko, Srna or Afellay but this should still deliver as a differential team for GW1.

    Pletikosa - 5.0 not the cheapest keeper but needed some Croatian defence, although I'm Irish I still think Croatia might keep a cleanie.
    Akinfeev - 5.5 again, bit pricey but still equally the cheapest route into the Russian defence which is looking strong.

    Jordi Alba - 6.5 expensive but the cheapest route to the Spanish backline and has a good attacking record from last season. If Italy play like they did against Russia, then could be profitable.
    M. Kadlec - 5.5 on penalties and if Russia don't deliver could see him with a nice haul of points as a start to Group A.
    Perquis - 4.5 cheapest route into the Polish backline and looks good for a clean sheet against Greece.
    Maniatis - 4.0 cheapest Greek defender and looked to be playing OOP last game. Simply a backup for the team but turning out to be a good backup.
    M. Olsson - 4.0 cheapest route into the Swedish defence although I don't see them keeping a clean sheet against Ukraine. If any defender will score in that game it'll surely be him.

    Xabi Alonso - 8.0 cheap for a Spaniard and seems very likely to start. Is on many set pieces, including penalties and should prosper from the recovered ball system.
    Błaszczykowski - 7.5 on set pieces and is Poland's highest-scoring player for the qualifiers.
    Shirokov - 6.0 cheap and has had a great few friendlies during the lead-up to the Euros. Very attacking and should get assists or goals easily enough in Group A.
    Mandžukić - 6.0 playing OOP up front if he is picked over Eduardo for the Croatian national squad. Srna could be a safer gamble with set pieces but could be a great differential or aflop if Ireland's defence holds up.
    Schweinsteiger - 9.0 on set pieces for the Germans and offers a good attack threat. Could rake in the points against a recently leaky-defenced Portugal.

    Van Persie - 11.0 after the season he has had, we all know on this site how good VP is. Looks safer to start than Huntelaar and looks set to bang in a few against the Danes. Could be on penalties of Kuyt looses his place in the starting XI.
    Ibrahimović - 8.0 on set pieces for the Swedes and is quite cheap for the Golden Boot winner of Serie A this year. Ukraine have been leaky in defence so expect a goal-fest from both teams.
    T. Müller - 9.5 cheapest German attacker and looks like a safe pick in terms of starting on the wing. Hoping for plenty of assists and occasionally takes some set pieces.

        Pletikosa is really my back-up keeper for if Akinfeev concedes. Hoping it won't come to that.

        Don't have a lot of faith in the Irish defence (hangs head in shame). And Olsson is a great attack threat.

        Xabi is on set pieces but if he turns out to be pants, I'll be using my WC in GW2 and will upgrade him to whoever is performing well on the Spanish team.

    Can I hear some thoughts on my (provisional) team? The idea is that this should be for the first two GW with the wildcard played for the last group games.

    Lloris / Greek GK
    Alba / Boateng / Zhirkov / Strinic / J Olsson
    Iniesta / Sneijder / Young / Yarmolenko / Meireles
    Lewandowski / Kerzhakov / Jelavic

    Captaining Lew for the first day with Sneijder, Iniesta and Yarmolenko as backups. 4 players from Group D teams on the bench and brought on as is necessary.

      I'd get rid of Iniesta - Spain's attacking line is so loaded it's hard to make the wager on who's going to provide the goals. replace him with Young/Nasri. or you could replace him with a diff like Yarm, maybe take a punt on Malouda, and upgrade Andrews.

          You probably carried the lad, now rub it in until he realises he should just do exactly what you tell him.

      he's definitely not nailed on, I think lots of people are being taken by his high ownership on the McDonald's game.

      He won't start for Italy, yet the Tipster section on the McDonalds site recommends him and says he's likely to start every game. But Maggio is 1st choice RB, i don't see their logic..

      No evidence to suggest he starts, although apparently it the assistant mgr misleading people, and then the sheep following the herd.

      However, he has a bit more chance of playing if they switch to 352 I think.

      The high ownership had resulted from a positive feedback cycle initiated by the fact that he's cheap and been a Milan defence starter. He's not an Italy defence starter, though.

    La Gazzetta dello Sport has drafted a Group C preview. Once co-manager Parmtree has checked his mail and approved it the preview will be posted.
