Liverpool made their third signing of the summer transfer window late last week, signing up Oussama Assaidi from Dutch side SC Heerenveen on a long-term contract. The 24-year old arrives at Anfield for a fee in the region of £3m and follows Fabio Borini and Joe Allen to the club as Brendan Rodgers continues his first-team restructuring for the season ahead:

The move for Assaidi was something of a surprise – Liverpool have been linked with a substantial number of players since Rodgers’ installation but the Moroccan’s name was never amongst the potential targets mentioned. He spoke of his delight at joining up on Merseyside upon completion of a medical:

I’m very happy to play for this big club. The first time I spoke to the coach I had a good feeling. I had offers from other big clubs but I’ve been waiting for this moment. The coach gave me a good feeling. It will be a dream to play with these big players and I hope training will help me to be a good player here. When I watch Liverpool it’s always a good atmosphere, the fans are fantastic and I’m happy to be here.

The Statistics

A product of the AZ Alkmaar youth academy, Assaidi’s career has so far been restricted to Holland. He made his debut in the Dutch top division with FC Omniworld back in the 2006-07 season and over the course of his two campaigns at the club, found the net on only three occasions. As a result, he was shipped off to De Graafschap but failed to fire in his first term, with 12 appearances harvesting a single goal as his side were relegated from the Eredivisie.

Assaidi started the 2009-10 campaign with five goals in as many games and resultantly earned himself a transfer back into Holland’s top-flight, when SC Heerenveen snapped him up just prior to the closure of the summer transfer window. Once again, his initial impact in his new surroundings was minimal – the Moroccan managed a single goal and three assists from 20 appearances but the appointment of Ron Jans to the Heerenveen hot seat ahead of the following campaign proved to be the turning point.

Over the past two seasons Assaidi has returned 19 goals and 20 assists in 58 games for the Dutch side, with three goals and three assists in a 6-2 win over FC Twente the particular highlight of his flourishing career. To date, he has represented his country on 22 occasions and found the net once.

The Prospects

Assaidi’s arrival will undoubtedly boost Liverpool’s current options on the flanks. His speed and directness in possession, allied with superb dribbling ability and an eye for goal will surely place considerable doubt over Stewart Downing’s game time for the Reds. Bearing in mind the former Villa man failed to produce any attacking returns whatsoever last season, it’s fair to assume Rodgers has been looking for a more potent wide man in front of goal. The Fantasy potential of the new boy, however, now hinges on the club’s remaining signings over the summer period – if the mooted move for Clint Dempsey comes to fruition, it’s likely Assaidi will struggle for any sort of investment

The Moroccan’s preferred position is on the left as an inverted winger, drifting inside onto his favoured right foot, but is capable of playing on either side of a lone forward in Rodgers’ 4-3-3. We could well see him swapping flanks with Fabio Borini or maybe even see the Italian on the right – Rodgers’ tactics at Swansea was based around a natural right winger, Nathan Dyer, and the right-footed Scott Sinclair on the opposite side.

As to how quickly the new boy will settle – that’s another matter. Rodgers lavished praise on the Moroccan upon his arrival but also took time to suggest Assaidi’s introduction to the Premier League could very well be a gradual one:

We’re delighted with the signing, he’s a young player who has done very well, in particular in the last couple of seasons, in Holland. He fits our style perfectly, he’s an exciting player who is very good in one versus one situations and I think he’s a player that will excite the crowd. We’re not expecting too much too early, he needs time to adapt but we’re delighted he’s chosen to come here over a number of other clubs. As I said, I’ll look forward to helping his development and I hope he’ll become a very good part of this club.

In a sense, it’s an ideal situation for Fantasy managers if Rodgers affords Assaidi sub roles while he gets used to his new surroundings. Despite the fact they have three home games in the next four, Liverpool’s upcoming schedule is hardly enticing – City, Arsenal and United all roll up to Anfield in the next four Gameweeks and with a trip to Sunderland also on the horizon, we’ll be quite happy to allow the new boy time to settle before the Reds have (nor, STO, RDG) from Gameweek 6-8.

Although he’s likely to play the same role as Borini, the new boy has been listed as a midfielder in FPL and the Sky Sports game – coming in at 6.5 and 4.8 respectively, he’s a potential budget-friendly option, then. If he can come close to replicating his Heerenveen form and nails down a regular role, Assaidi is likely to find plenty interest, though with nine days still left of the transfer window the cheque-book is expected to be wielded by Liverpool once again. Only then can we assess his chances with a greater degree of certainty.

"Fletcher is one of only a dozen players to have scored 30 Premier League goals in the past three seasons and one of only three to have done so at a club that has not played in the UEFA Champions League during that period........... Indeed, the only other player to have achieved the feat without playing for a club competing in Europe is Darren Bent. You'll remember him as Sunderland sold him for £24million last year."

Whilst that may be true, Lampard was constantly getting in to the box against Wigan. I don't need to him create chances for others, I need him to score for himself. With players like Hazard and Mata in the Chelsea team, the chances of penalties are even higher.

I have a good feeling about him.

I understand and it is a fair point, I think Lampards reputation has suffered when he was playing under AVB last season as he was dropped now and again, but RDM seems to still have faith in him and as long as he is fit I think he will feature for Chelsea and score well.

Mind you Mata and Hazard are also great options, albeit 0.5 more expensive.

I think he was rather attacking too, but agree with Redunited that he looks better for goals than for assists.

He's an instinctively attacking player, and while Hazard and Mata run around doing their fancy stuff he can go on late runs in the box and score some deflections and rebounds to add to his penalties. Tasty at 9m!

So, I've already done Mata -> Michu to get this lot for GW2:

    De Gea, (Federici)
    Zabaleta, Cuellar, Clyne, (McCartney), (Hughes)
    Bale(c), Lampard, Pienaar, Michu, (Guthrie)
    Torres, Tevez, Podolski
    Bank 3.0m

Reckon it's worth doing Torres -> RVP(c) for a hit? Would give me a decent MUN(c) option, and it means I have a transfer spare to do Lamps -> Nasri/Kagawa/VDV in GW3, and can therefore play 3-4-3 in GW3, rather than playing Cuellar (swa). Thinking this may justify taking a hit.....

Sunderland are out of their goddamn minds. Imagine who else you could get for £15m. Wasn't Ade £5m, with City subsidising his wages?

Yeah £5m. Maybe City are subsidising a substantial portion of his wages though?! I think Fletch will score goals for Sunderland but I'm gonna guess that he's going to cost them about £1m per goal

Who should I transfer Mata out for?

    Bale

    or

    Kagawa

I would think that takes more precedence over transferring Torres since I have Tevez.

So many people on here talking about spending points after 1 week? It's madness, you have to have patience. VDV for example will rip it up this weekend, avb only had him on the bench because they were away from home and VDV had a late preseason. Chill out people

If your initial plan was to do Terry > S. Taylor to rotate with Cuellar (a rotation that I've written down and worked out with the rest of my defence); would you for GW 3 do:

    B) Terry > Baines

If going to transfer Taarabt out, at least wait one game - he was tops in touches, passes, 8 shots - and a very high ICT - any game that QPR win will see him on Maximum bonus with stats like that. - Not to mention for all of you Petric owners, he rotates nicely with him during these opening fixtures.

49ers, saw you guys discussing SAF's reasoning on buying RVP. Posted this earlier. Here's my 2 cents.

Alright so i’m a United fan and i’m going to put some perspective to this move. A lot of it is assumption but this is what i think. Squad depth is the primary reason for this RVP move. And no, that does not mean that Rooney or RVP will be on the bench every week. United have class strikers as back up in Welbeck + Chicharito. After http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9K0S_d3Oq-o SAF’s ego is hurt and he needs to find a solution to challenge for all three trophies (FA cup + EPL + UCL). What i have noticed as a trend in the last 4 seasons or so is that the United players do look very drained when the big cup games and the UCL games come up and when you have a big game against a Liverpool at the weekend followed by lets say a Champions league semi-final against Bayern after that, you need to be able to give a Rooney/RVP a rest so that the other can do the job and can still be very fresh for the next big game. Do not forget, this could be fergie’s last 2-3 years at the helm and while Chicha + Welbs did offer good strength in depth, to seriously challenge on all fronts, Fergie needed a big hitter there somewhere. He did not want to take a chance and wanted a 2nd world class striker there in what could be the last team put together by him.

      Fair point.
I like RVP wearing a Red shirt as I'm a MUFC fan too, just wanted people's opinion.

Would Assaidi's 3 goals and 3 assists in one game as a midfielder be a record points haul for 1 game in fantasy football?

Defoe scored 5 in one game and then didn't score again for about 20 weeks

that was 25 pts. Assaidi would have 29 pts.
