A couple of Gameweeks into the new season and Sir Alex Ferguson has been tinkering with his up front options already, handing Fantasy managers plenty to consider. For the weekend visit of Fulham, the United boss retained just one of his four attacking players –Shinji Kagawa – from the side that lost to Everton in Gameweek 1; a sign, perhaps, of what may unfold over the campaign.

There’s little doubt Kagawa has settled quickly into his new surroundings. With his manager admitting the idea of starting both Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie for the Fulham match was “too much of a risk” due to fitness issues, the Japanese star was an automatic selection for the role in “the hole” against Martin Jol’s side.

Prior to the match against the Cottagers, Ferguson lavished praise upon Kagawa, indicating he expects a significant attacking contribution from the Japanese star over the course of the current campaign:

I would also include Shinji Kagawa in the [goalscoring] mix because he is very much an attacking player, nominally from midfield but perfectly capable of taking a front role. One thing for sure is that he will add a scoring dimension if he plays central midfield, as he showed last season for Borussia Dortmund. We have been low on goals from midfield in recent seasons. There was a time when Bryan Robson would give you a dozen through the centre of the park and Paul Scholes in his heyday was good for 10 or so but lately we haven’t seen that kind of tally.I believe that Kagawa will put that right, which with the addition of Van Persie to the team, should ensure that we don’t lose any more titles on goal difference.

With Rooney now ruled out for the next few matches with a thigh injury, Kagawa could be set to forge a partnership with Van Persie up front for United – as a result, we take a look at the club’s first two matches to ascertain just where, if any, the difference lay in the respective performances.

Average Positions

Swansea Average Positions Vs QPR 2012
Swansea Average Positions Vs QPR 2012

Looking at the average position map from the two games, the similarity between Kagawa and Rooney at Everton is striking. In the Goodison encounter (left), Kagawa (26) and Rooney (10) were almost in identical positions when in possession – the latter’s propensity to drop back and influence the game from a deeper position dampened the side’s attacking edge. Nani (17) also played a part here, too; starting on the right wing, the Portuguese star continually came inside when on the ball, affording Kagawa little space to dictate matters in “the hole”.

Compared to the Fulham game (right), the difference is obvious. Antonio Valencia (7) hogged the touchline far more than Nani managed at Everton, while Robin Van Persie (20) took up a more advanced position than Rooney in the lone forward role. These two factors combined allowed Kagawa a far greater in the middle of the park and afforded United a superior attacking edge. Indeed, Kagawa’s average position against Fulham is the same as Rooney’s at Everton; a definite sign that the two are perhaps too similar in style to play together as effectively as Kagawa and Van Persie or Rooney and Van Persie.

Kagawa and Rooney

Despite his side having less of the ball against Fulham in comparison to Everton (60.1% v 70% possession), Kagawa managed to register slightly more touches per minute (1.0 to 1.1) against the Cottagers. He also received exactly the same number of passes per minute (1.4) in both games, though his overall totals are obviously affected by the game time in each match –he played the full 90 minutes against the Toffees but made way for Rooney on 67 minutes on Saturday. Regardless of who he plays alongside up front, the Japanese star is likely to see the same amount of the ball, going by the stats so far.

Kagawa (eve)Kagawa (FUL)Rooney (FUL)Van Persie (FUL)Rooney (eve)
Mins/Touch1.11.03.32.21.3
Mins/Pass Rcvd1.11.44.33.31.9

Rooney’s stats, on the other hand, vastly differ over the two games. Against Everton as the lone frontman, he had a touch every 1.3 minutes and received a pass every 1.9 minutes but, coming on as a direct replacement for Kagawa, he failed to impress in “the hole” alongside Van Persie. The game seemed to pass by the United number 10 – with a touch every 3.3 minutes and a pass received every 4.3 minutes, his arrival failed to have the desired effect.

A look at Van Persie’s stats against Fulham highlights the difference in his interpretation of the lone forward role – he had less of a desire to drop back like Rooney against Everton and was resultantly far less involved in the overall play with a touch every 2.2 minutes and a pass received every 3.3 minutes. With more space afforded to Kagawa as a result of Van Persie and Valencia’s presence, the Japanese playmaker managed four shots in the Fulham match, whereas against Everton he failed to register a single attempt.

Nani and Valencia

The battle for the right wing berth is just as pertinent a point. As the respective average position maps highlight, Valencia clearly offers a better balance on the flank and the stats more than back this up. Against Everton, Nani saw the ball once every 1.4 minutes – while that’s not too dissimilar to Valencia’s 1.1 minutes per touch against Fulham, it’s where the likeness ends. Nani made just 28 touches in the Toffees final third over his 78 minutes at Goodison; half Valencia’s 56 in the win over Fulham.

Indeed, the latter was United’s main out ball in the attacking zone against the Cottagers – he received 40 passes and made 29 successful passes in the final third; Nani’s Goodison stats are 16 and 12 respectively, a significant difference.

Mins/TouchFinal 3rd TchPass Rcvd Final 3rdSucc Pass Final 3rdCrossesChances Created
Nani (eve)1.428161280
Valencia (FUL)1.1564029143

The maps below represent the position of origin of each chance created in each of United’s two games so far. The lack of creativity on the right at Everton (left) differs vastly from the Fulham match (right) with Valencia on the flank, with United failing to provide a single scoring opportunity down the right at Goodison. The latter produced 14 crosses against Fulham compared to Nani’s eight at Everton and Valencia also created three goalscoring opportunities in Saturdays’ win – Nani failed to make a single “key pass” against Moyes’ men.

Swansea Average Positions Vs QPR 2012
Swansea Average Positions Vs QPR 2012

Nani’s lack of defensive awareness is another factor here and one which could play a part in Ferguson’s thinking. The Portuguese star’s tendency to drift centrally when on the ball resulted in 14 of Everton’s 18 crosses coming from the Toffees left flank, with the likes of Leighton Baines and Steven Pienaar benefiting from Nani’s wayward positioning. Fulham, on the other hand, were reduced to just five of their 13 crosses from the same wing with Valencia and Rafael limiting the attacking potential of John Arne Riise and Alex Kacaniklic in comparison. Furthermore, when it comes to goalscoring opportunities, Everton created six from the left on Monday, while Fulham managed just two at the weekend, despite having far more of the ball against United than the Toffees.

The stats certainly suggest that right now, on form at least, Valencia is a far more productive option on the right than Nani and with Kagawa’s partnership alongside Van Persie up front looking strong, Rooney’s injury certainly takes one difficult decision out of Ferguson’s hands.

IFfyou have Michu, you have to go Petric. Fulham look good offensively, and I dont think doubling on them is a good idea. They have done well in their opening 2 fixtures but I dont think they will do so well against teams that score first against them.

Cerny not nailed on with Green and possible Cesar.

Briggs only played because of Riise's knock.

      Pog isn't a great pick

Downgrade one of those midfielders and upgrade the highlighted options above

It's difficult to get decent value on those positions if i take out nasri

I accept Cerny won't play and taking the risk of having no sub goalie

            I've swapped briggs for demel

Pog is the best available at 5 mil

Hi vets, I've been away this weekend - just as well by the sounds of it - so correct me if wrong:

Working on the .3 thing, You should have just enough for Hazard a the start of next week (@9.9). That comes with it's own risks, of course.

In that case I guess you'll want to get it done in one transfer. That narrows your choices.

Waiting until the start of GW4 would be prudent, but you'll be giving up at least 0.5 value betweeen the two.

Maverick move - take another hit for a known mid-price riser eg Fellani which could protect your funds and let you have Bale / Hazard / Kag together when gw4 begins (even if he's 10.5)

Long time reader, first time comment.
Could someone explain to me why it is essential to have 'cover' in a team. For example i have no Man U players because feel Baines (7.0) will outscore Vidic (7.0) as he takes pens and Everton will keep around the same CS as Man U. Plus Baines is much more attacking.

I also feel Tevez (9.0 Originally) will score similar point too RVP (13.0) so why spend 4 mil extra unless you want both? leaving a weak defense and mindfield.

The only player i am considering is Kagawa (8.5) but with Hazard being fantasy gold and nailed on whereas Kagawa will be at risk to rotation with Man U's bulging midfield and attack.

DDG (6.0) looks like good value on paper. But with United injury depleted defense, coupled with the fact DDG has already had numerous dodgy moments making him a serious risk to lose his place to Lindergaard soon like last season for a long spell.

Can anyone explain to me why i MUST have United cover then. Am i thinking wrong?

The team is being built around Kagawa and RVP. Kagawa is not a rotation risk and when united sooner or later stuff someone by 5 or 6 goals you dont want to be on the outside looking in.

My worry is when Champions league kicks off, united will rest RVP for them games as they have so many other great strikers to fill in.

Everton wont keep as many clean sheets as United.
You dont have to have cover for United. Its just a good idea to because United and City (and maybe Chelsea now) are more liable than any other team to have a goalfest on any given week. Next 2 weeks could easily result in 3 or 4 goals for United, so you'd want some points from that. The game isnt about picking the players that will end up in the end of season dream team now, its about taking advantage of fixtures and form of players in the short term and hopefully having the highest scoring players duriing their peaks.

      great first post

"cover" is just some bulls**t that seems to have caught on with some people and spread like wildfire...on this subject you're thinking correctly

but don't make the mistake of underestimating the importance of your captain...Tevez is great value but so is Van Persie because you will lose a lot if you're captaining Tevez in tricky away games while other people have both of them and are captaining Van Persie in easy home games

the ManUtd defenders are getting fit again, Evans and Jones anyway

Sometimes "covering" teams works - Swansea are a case in point so far this season, there've been points all over the shop; and there's probably more sense to the concept in defence given that it's the only area where individuals are rewarded for a team stat. Generally speaking though I agree with the crux of what you're saying.

I think a better example of not needing cover at the moment would be both Arsenal and Spurs. Neither are in form and I would be happy to not have Cazorla or VDV/Bale. United however are a cut above those two teams and with Rooney out for a while rotation shouldn't be an issue for Kagawa or RVP. I avoided getting a United attacker for a while but Rooneys injury has changed things.

"The Technical Area" is one of my favourite category of posts on here. This particular one talks up Kagawa as a great fantasy prospect but I would not double up on the United attack with the upcoming fixtures and I think RVP is THE United attacker to have. RVP is too hard to ignore with Rooney out. He'll be the main man undeniably in attack with direct FKs and spot-kicks to his name. RVP and Tevez also offer that perfect H/A captaincy combination which was much sought after pre-season albeit in the form of Rooney and Aguero.

Why not double up. We're taking man u here not some mino they normally score more than 1 and if rvp scores kagawa has a good chance of getting the assist he does play in the mid after all and in the main assist is what u want from midfielders

My concern about Kagawa is Uniteds tendency to assist from out wide. Valencia and Young/Nani are just as likely if not more likely to assist than kagawa. Its the way United tend to play. This justifies people 'feeling' that Kagawa may assist the assister.

Of course it is equally possible that Kagawa could be the catalyst for United to change their approach this year utilitsing him as a central playmaker. I for one though find it hard to imagine United playing switching to a more central attacking philosophy rather than a more traditional winger attacking philosophy.

Whoa. Just read the last hour's worth of discussion (re discussions). I have to say I still think this site is brilliant for the articles alone. I'm not bothered by lowering of the quality that the newbies bring. Most of them will fade away quick enough.
I find that if you come on this place at a set time during the day or night and stick to that set time then you quickly identify the sensible heads. Ignore the chaff and chat with the wheat.
I do avoid the Dugout Discussions though as it does tend to get nasty in there.

True, I still visit this site regularly as I did a few years ago but I skim through far more comments which are pointless. In the past this site used to be brilliant for general football discussion as well and a lot of good posters barely post any more which is a shame.

Again, true. And when a good football discussion happens, it's hijacked by those who can't see beyond FPL points...eg "Mata was terrible Vs Newcastle"...no he wasn't, he was excellent, he just didn't return FPL points!

Don't get me wrong. Of course new people have every right to post whatever they want. It's just that many of them don't take the time to read the articles and/ or older pages to see if their question has been asked a thousand times before.
I gaurantee we will see 10,000 "RVP or Tevez for captain" before the week is out.

And hopefully in my three years on here I have added something of quality to the discussions. Sometimes 😉

ive read with interest the last hr or two's discussions (including the scouts original reply) and as a long standing lurker and total techophobe ive always struggled immencely with the speed of getting involved in multiple disscussions (hence my lurker status) but this site is just the best thing since sliced bread imo, it satisfys my daily need for fantasy footi input and thought and like ballacks i think said earlier thats the price of popularity.....it is so so so so worth th eprice for the articles on their own but the speed the pages go by at (and my own ability to give sound advice) means i have little option but to remain a lurker and take out of it what i can 😛

cue it being on page 12 by the time i manage to post this 😆

Tough decision time, some help please! Currently got:

    Green / Federici
    A Cole / Rangel / Hangeland / Tomkins / Kaboul
    Bale / Nasri / Michu / Noble / Ramires
    Tevez / Torres / Pog

Need to get rid of Kaboul and Ramires (pref tonight as looks like value going down). Want to do Kaboul > Rafael, but is Rafael going to keep playing? Now for the real dilemma:

A: Ramires > Pienaar then Torres to RVP next week
B: Ramires > Kagawa and keep Torres

Yeah, longterm he is, though much depends on whether Fellaini can keep the Tim Cahill role, if not he's due for a drop in returns if Naismith or Mirallas plays as a second striker and he sits deeper.
I can't see Pienaar getting rotated much, if at all, probably slightly more than Fellaini, but i think his upside is worth it
