With a morale-boosting away win at Fulham leading them into a strong run of home fixtures, Sunderland’s attacking assets take a climb in the Watchlist rankings. Southampton’s main protagonists also rise in our estimations, with three St Mary’s showdowns in the following four, while Marouane Fellaini gets de-railed by suspension, opening the way for Juan Mata and Michu to steal his thunder for this week at least…

Goalkeepers

Once again the goalkeeping situation is troublesome. While Simon Mignolet offers an obvious “Plan A”, the options below him are limited, with injuries and uncertainty rife throughout this position.

Below the Black Cats’ stopper, we still have time for Stoke’s Asmir Begovic, given that Tony Pulis’ side are always likely to rely on a resolute defence to earn results. Immediate home games with Fulham and Newcastle look favourable for the Bosnian.

With the keeper situations at Reading, Southampton and Swansea still in flux, with first-choice options perhaps nearing returns, we’re restricted in the budget and mid-price markets. This is not helped by the fixtures in front of Jussi Jaaskelainen, which continue to dent his prospects, despite recent shut-outs. Ben Foster’s current groin injury is also a real frustration – he has Stoke, West Ham and Norwich to come at home in the next six and rotates well with Mignolet but Steve Clarke has yet to give us an update on his availability.

Those factors afford an opportunity for both John Ruddy. His fixtures may be tough in the short-term, but Chris Hughton’s side are overcoming the odds to return clean sheets and Ruddy appears to be the best route to covering recent form that has seen him concede just a single goal in five league outings.

Defenders

With no clean sheet in seven, it’s getting harder by the week to justify Leighton Baines as the definitive defensive selection – although the lack of viable heavy-hitting alternatives offers little competition. Clearly there is a pull towards a mid-price/budget defensive unit, but we’re still keeping faith with the Everton man on the basis that the potential for attacking returns remains strong.

United’s Rafael is another name suffering from recent defensive lapses: it’s five without a shut-out for him. Fixtures remain in his favour, however, and his partnership with Antonio Valencia continues to offer a vibrant attacking option for Sir Alex Ferguson’s men down the flank. The return to fitness of both Phil Jones and Chris Smalling is a mild concern – certainly it’s a situation worth monitoring but, for now, Rafael looks to have cemented his starting role at right-back.

Carlos Cuellar climbed to third in the rankings last time out and notched an unlikely goal at the Cottage to keep that status this week. His fixtures are outstanding, with a double Gameweek 16 looming to promise that extra pay-off.

There’s little movement immediately below this, although both Javier Garrido, Andre Wisdom and Jose Enrique make climbs off the back of recent form. Enrique is an intriguing option – it’s questionable as to whether the Spaniard will remain in this advanced position but, in the short-term, it’s clear that he presents a handy differential with the potential for strong returns. Wisdom is no less a risk, although his modest price tag makes him an attractive option, particularly once Liverpool’s next two away trips are disposed of.

As for Garrido, his rank takes a slight dent due to the appeal of Ruddy as a coverage option of the Norwich defence but, while the likes of Michael Turner are available in Chris Hughton’s back four, Garrido looks to have some attacking intent down the Norwich left and a good understanding with Anthony Pilkington, which has already brought recent returns.

Southampton’s Nathaniel Clyne has the fixtures and some attacking qualities to deliver value for his price tag in the coming weeks, while Reading’s Nicky Shorey replaces Kaspar Gorkss as our nominated Royals defender off the back of recent performances and his continued supply of crosses from the left.

Both Liam Ridgewell and Ciaran Clark are sneaking back into the rankings as their fixtures show signs of improvement – like so many defenders in our list, potential attacking returns remain central to their appeal.

Midfielders

The midfield is a troubled area right now with Marouane Fellaini toppled by his suspension for this weekend. That’s seen us promote Juan Mata to the top of the rankings, although this morning’s departure of Roberto Di Matteo perhaps puts a question mark over the merits of Chelsea investment right now.

Michu is the big climber. Now ranked second, ahead of Fellaini for this week at least, the Swansea marksman scored his seventh of the season at Newcastle and now faces up to three home matches in four to offer him the perfect opportunity to boost his goal tally further. Dangling on the suspension tightrope, Michu can still be regarded as hot property with his goalscoring prowess and pivotal role in Michael Laudrup’s side truly confirmed.

Raheem Sterling remains in our top five off the back of his double assist in the win over Wigan on Saturday – if you don’t acquire Luis Suarez up front, the case for Sterling looks strong.

There’s little to choose between the likes of Santi Cazorla, Antonio Valencia and David Silva below him. The three playmakers are similarly priced and look set for profit in the coming weeks – the Arsenal man just sneaks it; his goal and assist returns against Spurs offering recent confirmation of his talent and continued potential.

Southampton’s Jason Puncheon crashes in to replace team-mate Adam Lallana in the rankings following an outstanding showing in the 3-1 win at Loftus Road. His budget price tag appears to offer incredible value if he can maintain his run of starts over the Saints’ three home matches in four. Having previously lost his start thanks to a fickle Nigel Adkins, we do need to stay wary, however.

Sunderland’s Stephane Sessegnon is definitely a punt. He crashed home his first goal of the season in the win at Fulham and undoubtedly has the fixtures to thrive over the next month. Acquisition will take investment and comes at a risk. Arguably, Adam Johnson or Seb Larsson offer cheaper, albeit less explosive alternatives in the Sunderland midfield.

Forwards

He may have drawn a blank at Norwich but Robin Van Persie remains top of the pile with fixtures blossoming in the coming weeks. It’s hard to imagine too many repeats of Saturday’s frustration with home matches with QPR, West Ham and a trip to Reading to come in the next three.

Luis Suarez also holds firm with form that has now seen him return in every one of his last six league outings. While Carlos Tevez and Sergio Aguero both outscored him at the weekend, Suarez remains an untouchable in the Liverpool side, threatened only by an inevitable one-match ban which will come once the next yellow card is fluttered in the Uruguayan’s direction.

The City pairing remain prone to rotation as the schedule nears the busy period and sit mid-table in our rankings, partly due to the increased appeal of David Silva in midfield. His acquisition would allow us to free up spots up front for the likes of Steven Fletcher and Rickie Lambert, who both climb with form and fixtures in their favour – they are strong contenders for the third striker spot for the month ahead.

Both Demba Ba and Olivier Giroud are also making decent cases for a squad place, while Villa’s Christian Benteke is a new name to consider as a differential: he climbs into the lower reaches of the rankings with fixtures begin to arrange themselves nicely for the Belgian.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Also a point for your first blog - people have a shortlist of what 10 players each week? Maybe more sometimes. You remember the ones you didn't get that scored and forget you even considered the ones who got 2 pointers.

It's interesting though that your article was about recognising the 'herd-mentality' of FPL/FFS. Whereas selling Baines is actually the opposite of 'going with the tide'. It's a unique idea to do so because most would be too afraid to break from the pack and thus may not do it.

So I find it hard to understand why you are so sick of the Baines debate. You will use the stats to prove he is a keeper. But you are being entirely conservative by holding that opinion. If your argument was for individuality and logic then why are decrying the lone rangers who want to sell Baines for instance?

I disagree that just a few brave souls are considering dropping him. Earlier in the week there was a significant tide of malcontent. I have seen several posts of "Is anyone keeping Baines after Norwich" with a fairly evenly mixed response.

Depends on the herd I guess. I got the impression that most people had decided by the end of the discussion that Baines out was the best idea. This may well have been because those that thought so were more vocal which in turn was possibly because it was a more interesting point of view to share than the actual consensus.

Well you could also argue that social proof/herd mentality is leading to people holding onto Baines, yes. You could also argue that a separate consensus had/has formed and people were kneejerking him out without really looking into whether his lack of returns was due to bad luck or bad performances or something else. "Baines > Enrique/Wisdom/Garrido" springs to mind.

I am not at all being conservative in holding onto my opinion, I'm just not changing it because no new information has come to light since I last decided I would hold onto him, hence the reason I'm fed up of debates about whether or not to keep Baines. My decision to own him wouldn't change just because he went a few weeks without significant returns, as long as I though future returns would warrant keeping.

I'm actually want to look into Baines' stats some more to find out if I can work out if there's a reason why he's not converting his chances. If you'd like to help out, be my guest. I want to look at crosses, cross accuracy, crossing positions and through balls.

Well, I'll add one thing to this and that is that when you talk about Baines here it is very much with his assists potential in mind. To me, his lack of assists isn't the problem. 3 assists to me is decent for any attacking defender is decent over 12 games. An assist every 4 games. You'd be asking a lot of him to be continuously assisting goals every game when Everton have so many other creative players in their attack anyway to do this in equal measure.

The biggest concerns for me are these:

Everton's inability to keep goals out
Their inability to keep CS in their run of good fixtures.
Their increasingly obvious preference towards outscoring opponents than keeping them out at the other end.
Their disastrous tendency to concede early in so many games.
Baines also, in being so attacking, leaves them vulnerable at the back!
And finally, from an FPL point of view...the freedom selling Baines would give you in getting other players that are less owned and just as likely to score points like Baines but showing stronger form.

      Nice article lad.

I'm doing allot of work around innovation at the moment and that would be my "academic" background so to speak, so my natural inclination is to question the why's behind the herd mentality. Pretty useful to keep asking questions of the accepted norms and look for problems/opportunities.

Baines I asked questions about last week and put forward an argument of why he may not be everyone's cup of tea, I concluded he is a very good player who may just a touch overpriced now, but if you have the team value keep him as it will be quite difficult to find the additional points for the comparatively small amount of saved money. If you're struggling for team value, you have more to ponder.

After listening to a few, my opinion has slightly changed and now i'm pretty much on the fence. But that is not a problem, taking a silo based approach on topics is poor form and useless.

Now I have more questions about Baines, such as why the KP aren't getting converted? I notice Pienaar is not getting the points either and his game is based on KP down the same side. What kind of chances is Baines creating? A cross and through ball into the box are two very different things imo.

Not sure where this question line will take me, but that is the fun part.

Nice points, I think it's entirely down to circumstances whether you buy or sell a player. Like you said, the value of your team plays a big part. Everyone is not in the same boat or the same ranking so decisions need to be made based on that and not by following the conservative players who are ahead of you and have buckets of spare cash. You may make mistakes but if you give enough thought to them then they hopefully should reap rewards.

The idea that Baines is not sellable is usually based on a lot of factors. So you can't just take one person's word for it. But at the end of the day he is a luxury player who may do well but can also wind up being way too overpriced if it goes badly for Everton over an extended period.

We're discussing Baines again. Damn you! It's my fault really.

You could say any £7m+ defender is a luxury, Baines too if he doesn't have enough actual genuine attacking threat. The jury's out on that one.

I want to look at that too but haven't got round to it. Let me know if you have any ideas and I'll be glad to help. His stats this season and last are similar so we can use last season's data as well and feel comfortable that the sample size is big enough. Obviously his created chances are coming from crosses rather than through balls, but we can't say why he's having less success. Other wingers have success with crosses and his cross accuracy is high. This could be extended to Pie like you say but, without looking, I'd guess Pie gets in the box more and provides more through-balls.

Don't think ill get around to it this week, other commitments, hopefully some fine fellow or the FFS team get a shot at it.

I have a wee feeling it may have something to do with Jelavic and Fellaini, but that is just an intuitive thing rather then any real science behind it. Both have had a lot of shots in the box.

Me and Mark has this out last week. We agreed that he's a good player to own but we couldn't asagree as to whether his status in the top 4 of the watchlist meant he should be started ahead of other players or simply be used as a 5th mid as backup.

He'd certainly be good value, although he's never been a goalscorer despite loving to take the ball forward, more likely to get assist points I'd have thought. Nothing wrong with that though 🙂

Is this right for the coming GW please?

    Bego (FUL)
Cuellar (WBA), Baines (VC) (NOR), Rafael (QPR),
Santi (avl), Silva (che), Nolan (tot), Sterling (swa)
RVP (C) (QPR), Ba (sou), Berba (stk)
Subs: O'Shea (WBA), Nelsen (mun), Kaca (stk)

I think the decision is really who to bench out of O'Shea, Cuellar, Sterling and Nolan? Do I double up on SUN def vs WBA over playing one of Nolan or Sterling...?

QPR and WHM could be trickier than people expect for Man Utd. Hughes desperate for a win, against his old club, probably on his last chance. The last time Allardyce went to Old Trafford he lost 7-1, I know he's a frequent donator of 3 points to Ferguson but he's going to want to keep it tight after that embarassment.

    Probably not though.

there is no guarantee he will bang them in this weekend. first of all newcastle are playing shite especially after europa matches. cabaye is now also injured.

southampton have turned the corner recently. defensively they have improved and will be in good confidence after the qpr match.

and yes i have just sold ba to suarez so im trying to convince myself it was right thing to do lol

You're too humble mate! Are you downgrading Baines to fund Aguero? Go for it regardless. Have a cheap defence too that's going though not as well as you. Strikers are where the pickings are at the moment. Other than Mata, probably Silva and possibly Cazorla, Hazard and Bale the pricey mids not bringing consistent returns. I expect Benitez to make Chelsea's midfield a bit less attacking and some will need to be more pressing and defensive.

It looks phenomenal on paper but there's so much value in the mid-priced strikers. I can't see Aguero outscoring Berbs, Ba or Giroud to the tune of £3-4m. I think it's better to spend that cash elsewhere.

Ben Arfa out for VAlencia OR
    Morrison out for A.Johnson

Im leaning towards B. Morrison out, my thinking behind that is Barfa has been playing well and Newc will turn their form around at some point plus they have the fixtures to do it...im hoping keeping the faith will pay off, What do u guys think?

It's a tricky one. I think if Everton start to sure up at the back then you can count on Baines a lot more. Part of the problem has been the defensive side, as he hasn't had the luck in the last few games but has been doing exactly the se1 thing and getting into attacking positions just as much.

Granville hit the nail on the head when he said he was the only player to have direct access to all points scoring on the game. Interestingly and somewhat ironically, I think Everton struggles at the back have resulted from Fellaini advancing.

It looks like Everton have actually overperformed defensively at home in terms of goals conceded. Looking at the amount of shots they have conceded inside the box

The man is currently on par with the best strikers in the PL in terms of conversion rate. That is a bout 3 shots per goal less than he had last season in spain. I think his form could drop a bit for a while.

This season Newcastle have been the second worst home defense in the league in terms of shots conceded inside the box 🙂 So it was a very good fixture for him.

Not saying its an easy choice, its just hard to keep him in my team when I know he will lose form considerably at some point. Even if he scores a goal or 2 I dont see Swans winning many of the next 6 games id say 2 max, so he is unlikely to see much bonus for his goals.

Have to say, I completely disagree with Fletcher's position on the Watch list. I know he has the home games and a double, but between worrying chances conversion data and Sunderland's attacking woes, it seems more of a speculative punt then anything based in potential/reward with some numbers to back it.

Michu ahead of Bale would be another one, but I can see some logic in that at least.

Sunderlands defense a bit over-hyped, so Cuellar is probably too far up, but that may be nitpicking. If you have him, id hold. Otherwise id not get too excited about that defense.

Fletcher continues to defy the critics. He is on for an 18-20 goal season as things stand. He scored 12 with a relegated Wolves and if there was ever a time to own him I think this run of fixtures is it.

His conversion data is outrageous but he's had his regression run and I think he will prosper over the next 5 because there are so many home games he can get more chances in.

Any advice on improving this backline with no bank?

    Bego (4.8) - Jaask (4.8)
    Baines (7.3) - Clark (4.4) - Cuellar (4.5) - Ridgewell (5.0) - Cameron (4.6)

I'll play Clark at home to Reading in GW14, and then switch to Gorkss/Shorey for the DGW.
If i do Cameron -> Davies as well, i can upgrade Cuellar to 5.4.

Thoughts on keeping Jaaskelainen? Not sure i wanna take the value loss.
