Arsenal’s double Gameweek 23 is set to increase interest in Lukas Podolski as Fantasy managers look to take advantage of the London side’s visit to Chelsea and a home game with West Ham. Priced at 8.2 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Podolski looks a ready-made replacement for Demba Ba, who was snapped up by 228,600 managers ahead of the Blues’ double Gameweek 22. Many of the former Newcastle striker’s owners are already nervous about his long-term value under Chelsea’s rotation-obsessed manager Rafa Benitez, with the suggestion that Fernando Torres will start tonight’s encounter with Southampton. Podolski is a straight swap option in the same price bracket.

Amongst Arsenal’s forwards, Podolski certainly looks the safest option; having cemented a role on the left of an attacking three, he has started all but two of the side’s Premier League matches this season. With 89 points in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game he is Arsenal’s highest ranked forward – only out-of-position midfielder Theo Walcott and Santi Cazorla have produced more points. With six goals scored and six assists this season, Podolski has both threat and creativity in his locker and has attracted 11 FPL bonus points, a tally bettered only by Cazorla and equalled by Walcott. In the Sky Sports game, where he is priced at £8.5m, Podolski also represents good value, having notched 88 points.

While Podolski, who has four double-digit points hauls to his name, is primed for investment ahead of the double gameweek he is not too shabby a purchase for the long term as well. Looking ahead, Arsenal have a kind run of fixtures over the next six game weeks (LIV, STO, sun, AVL, tot, EVE) including four home games and a North London derby with Tottenham, which are often high scoring ties. With Mikel Arteta sidelined due to a calf injury, Podolski looks set to be next in line for spot-kicks, according to his manager – furthering his appeal as a mid-price option.

Those investing in his services can also be assured of a strong pedigree, having scored 44 times in his 106 appearances for the German national side. This includes three goals in the 2006 World Cup and a further three at Euro 2008. Prior to joining Arsenal, on a four year deal this summer, he had just recorded his best top flight club haul for FC Cologne, where he scored 18 times and assisted seven goals in 29 Bundesliga appearances.

There is a slight caveat, though. During tight games Podolski is often sacrificed early on for a more defensive minded player. In Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with Southampton in Gameweek 21 he left the pitch on the 57 minute mark and in the following week against Manchester City at home, he departed before the hour once again; while his starting role is not in doubt, there’s every chance Podolski won’t last the full 90 minutes in either match.

Fantasy managers need to assess whether, over two appearances, he’ll be given opportunity to return scores that will surpass the alternatives up front. While Theo Walcott and Santi Cazorla remain firm favourites for the armband, Podolski appears to offer the next best route for those looking to treble up on attacking assets in Wenger’s lineup or avoid using up two midfield slots, with such riches available in that position elsewhere. The injury to Arteta, bringing spot-kicks into the equation, may just seal the deal for some.

Bit disrespectful to Heynckes all this focus on Guardiola.

Heynckes took Bayern to the UCL final, and are still in this year's competition (unlike Chelsea). Just a day ago Bayern said that Heynckes was the only person they were talking to.

Guardialo took over a Barca team on a plate, but still lost the League.

Spot on - Pep had built relations at Barca within the Youth team and when appointed whilst having a great team, was able to integrate the young lads like Pedro as the entire club play the same style - at Chelsea few months in he would be sacked.

Pep has taken what seems a safe option, with a strong team that already play a certain way, he will be allowed to develop Munich and broaden his experience, therefore probably a good move for him.

Guardiola’s a good coach, but put him in the ever-competitive Premier League and he’d be like a fish out of water. Germany should be an interesting test for him, but again, very high-profile club with very little league opposition. Also with the quality of players he has, it’s not going to be an impossible task for him.

What constitutes a proper fan. Am I a proper fan? Suppoting LFC 32 seasons. I live in Ireland and I've been to Anfield about 35 times and to about 5 away matches. Yet the Scousers still don't regard the Irish fans as "real". I think it's all a bit petty, tbh.

I started supporting spain before they won their first Euros because of the way they play and when Barca came and played my local team in a friendly (which i saw from the 6th row :D) they became my team beacause of their style of play. I hadn't really followed european football before so didn't realize how well they were doing. not to mention, this was a year or two before they won the treble

In what way is the EPL "unpredictable"? One of Man Utd, Man City and Chelsea will win, with Arsenal or Spurs in fourth and fifth. If you're not a consumer of one of these franchises, then the order in which they finish is irrelevant.

It's possible in Germany for VfL Wolfsburg to come from nowhere and win the Bundesliga, and for Hoffenheim to come very close to doing the same. OK, both teams had substantial outside investment, but when was the last time that a team outside the Sky elite genuinely challenged in England?

A very long time, probably going back to the very formation of the PL. Still, a reasonably consistent 3-way shootout with some shuffling in the CL spots is pretty decent.

Having taken a look through recent Bundesliga tables it's closer than I thought, fair play.

It's interesting at the different ways one can look at the upcoming fixtures for a player.

I had been planning going with the 352 in my WC and was telling myself Walcott has great fixtures..
3 home games in 5 after the double against mediocre teams, an away game against the side 14th in the table, and a North London Derby that is usually a goalfest.

But, now that I am considering 343 and going without Walcott, I'm trying to convince myself that the fixtures are not the best after the week..
Home games against Liverpool and Stoke (both good defensively), an away game against a tight Sunderland, an easy home game vs Villa and then a tough away game at Spurs (a top 4 side).

Strange how the same set of fixtures can be interpreted in different ways, depending on what you're looking for.

That's the way that Heynckes and Bayern are selling the situtation to the media.

Internally, Heynckes has been fighting to keep his job for weeks. Unsuccessfully.

Ha, I'd love to see a club come out and say:

Look the guy is old, we must go younger. We are tired of catching him zonking out during matches, the choice was obvious. Hell, last week he showed up at Borussia Monchengladbach and started bossin' players around, The guy is a liability.

It really amazes me how highly rated Guardiola is. He took over the best club in the world, with the best player ever. Not only that, he grew up at Barca, their philosophies were drilled into him. Not saying he's not good, but to have soo many big clubs go after him is a bit premature. It's a shame that Bayern won't provide much of a challenge.

The Bundesliga doesn't get the credit it deserves. I'd say its the best run league in the world, biggest stadiums and attendances. Huge teams in it as well, other than Bayern it seems to vary every few years who else is challenging for the title. I can't see anyone other than Utd, City or Chelsea winning the EPL for the next 10 years.

Wait til Friday for sure. You never know if O'Brien will suddenly be fit. In any event, with WHM you are probably gambling that WHM keep a home CS v. QPR; I suspect Arsenal will score 2 or perhaps 3 in the 2nd game of the DGW. Certainly don't take a hit for a WHM defender.
